Chapter 8: The Recording That Destroyed Everything

Nathan arrived at the private rehabilitation center shortly before sunset.
The building stood behind a row of tall trees, surrounded by a high security fence.
Marcus had arranged for two trusted officers to accompany them.
Nathan had refused to bring Victoria.
He had also refused Daniel's demand to come alone.
He was finished following instructions from people who had destroyed his family.
At the reception desk, Nathan showed the photograph of Amara.
A middle-aged administrator studied it carefully.
"Where did you get this?""
"Someone sent it to me. Is she here?""
The woman hesitated.
"I can't disclose patient information without authorization.""
Nathan placed Amara's old letter on the counter.
"Her name is Amara Hayes. She disappeared six years ago. I believe she's been held under another name.""
The administrator looked at the letter.
Then at Nathan.
"Please wait.""
She disappeared through a door.
Marcus approached Nathan.
"Are you certain this is the right place?""
"No.""
Nathan looked through the glass entrance.
"But it's the only lead we have.""
A few minutes later, the administrator returned with a thin folder.
"There is a patient here who matches the photograph.""
Nathan's breath caught.
"Can I see her?""
"She has been receiving long-term care. She sometimes has difficulty remembering dates and names.""
Nathan swallowed.
"Is she conscious?""
"Yes.""
"Please.""
The administrator studied him.
"What's your relationship to her?""
Nathan's eyes filled.
"I'm the man she was trying to come home to.""
The woman softened.
"Come with me.""
They walked down a quiet hallway.
Nathan's shoes echoed against the polished floor.
At the end was a small room with a window overlooking a garden.
A woman sat beside the bed.
Her hair was shorter than he remembered.
Her face was thinner.
But the moment she turned, Nathan knew.
"Amara.""
She stared.
For several seconds, there was no recognition.
Then her lips parted.
"Nathan?""
He rushed toward her.
She stood slowly.
He stopped just before reaching her, afraid that touching her might make the moment disappear.
"Amara.""
Her eyes filled.
"You're alive.""
Nathan let out a broken laugh.
"So are you.""
She covered her mouth.
Then he pulled her into his arms.
Amara began crying against his chest.
"I thought you never wanted us.""
Nathan held her tighter.
"I never stopped looking for you.""
She pulled back.
"Daniel told me you had rejected the baby.""
"He lied.""
"He showed me letters.""
Nathan closed his eyes.
"Those weren't from me.""
Amara began trembling.
"He said you had married someone else. He said you didn't want Lily.""
Nathan cupped her face.
"Amara, listen to me. Lily is alive. She's safe. She's waiting for you.""
Amara's knees weakened.
"Lily?""
Nathan nodded.
"She's six years old now.""
Amara began sobbing.
"My baby.""
"She's with Jada. A brave woman who saved her today.""
Amara touched Nathan's cheek.
"Did she find you?""
"Yes.""
"Does she know?""
"She knows you're her mother.""
Amara closed her eyes.
"Thank God.""
Nathan sat beside her.
He told her about the rooftop.
About Victoria.
About the necklace.
And about Daniel's phone call.
Amara listened silently.
When he finished, she looked frightened.
"Daniel knows you found me.""
Nathan nodded.
"He knows.""
"Then we need to leave.""
"Why?""
Amara gripped his hand.
"Because he doesn't want the company anymore.""
Nathan frowned.
"What do you mean?""
Amara looked toward the window.
"He wants something your father hid.""
Nathan thought about the missing ownership agreement.
"What's that?""
"Proof.""
"Proof of what?""
Amara lowered her voice.
"Your father discovered that Daniel had been stealing money from the company. Millions of dollars. He planned to report him.""
Nathan stared.
"Father never told me that.""
"He wanted to protect you.""
"How did you find out?""
Amara looked down.
"I worked in the accounting department for a short time. I found irregular transfers. Daniel discovered that I knew.""
Nathan's expression hardened.
"And he threatened you?""
"Yes.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"I tried. He intercepted every message. He even made me believe you were helping him.""
Nathan leaned forward.
"Where is the evidence?""
Amara looked at him.
"In the memory card.""
Nathan froze.
"The one inside Lily's necklace?""
She nodded.
"Your father gave it to me before I disappeared. He told me to keep it safe.""
Nathan reached into his pocket.
He removed the tiny card.
Amara stared at it.
"Did you open it?""
"No.""
"Don't.""
Nathan frowned.
"Why?""
"Because Daniel has been looking for it for six years.""
She took a shaky breath.
"The recording on that card doesn't just prove the financial fraud.""
"What else?""
Amara looked directly at him.
"It proves Daniel arranged the accident that killed your father.""
Nathan stood.
His face drained of color.
"My father died of a heart attack.""
Amara shook her head.
"That's what the report said.""
Nathan stared.
"What are you telling me?""
"Your father discovered Daniel had been moving money into secret accounts. He confronted him. Two days later, he was dead.""
Nathan felt sick.
"And Victoria?""
"She knew.""
"How?""
Amara closed her eyes.
"Because she was there.""
Nathan stared at her.
"At the accident?""
Amara nodded.
"She helped Daniel.""
Nathan stepped away.
Everything was connected.
The missing records.
The fake DNA report.
The threats.
The rooftop camera.
Victoria hadn't merely been trying to marry into his family.
She had been helping Daniel take control of it.
A knock interrupted them.
Marcus appeared in the doorway.
"Nathan, we need to leave.""
Nathan turned.
"Why?""
Marcus held up his phone.
"Someone accessed the facility's security system. They know we're here.""
Amara immediately grabbed Nathan's hand.
"Daniel.""
Marcus nodded.
"We've already alerted the officers.""
Nathan looked toward the hallway.
A distant alarm sounded.
The administrator hurried past the doorway.
"Everyone needs to move to the main lobby!""
Nathan helped Amara stand.
She clutched his arm.
"Where's Lily?""
"She's safe.""
"Promise me.""
"I promise.""
They hurried toward the exit.
But when they reached the reception area, Nathan's phone rang.
It was Jada.
He answered immediately.
"Jada?""
Her voice was trembling.
"Nathan, you need to listen to me.""
"What happened?""
"Victoria's gone.""
Nathan stopped walking.
"What?""
"She was left in the security room. When Marcus's assistant checked, she wasn't there.""
Nathan looked at Marcus.
Marcus immediately began making calls.
Jada continued.
"She left something behind.""
"What?""
"A note.""
Nathan's chest tightened.
"Read it.""
Jada took a breath.
"It says, 'If you want to see the girl again, bring me the memory card.''"
Nathan closed his eyes.
"Where's Lily?""
"She's with me. We're in the private lounge. Marcus told me to stay there.""
"Don't move.""
"Nathan...""
"What?""
Jada's voice broke.
"There's something else.""
Nathan gripped the phone.
"What?""
"I heard someone outside the room.""
A heavy sound came through the call.
Then a man's voice.
"Give me the child.""
Jada screamed.
Nathan started running.
"JADA!""
The call went silent.
He reached the exit as Marcus shouted behind him.
"Car! Now!""
Nathan jumped into the vehicle.
Amara climbed in beside him.
He called Jada again.
No answer.
Then his phone received a video.
He opened it.
Lily was sitting on a chair, crying.
Jada stood in front of her with both arms extended protectively.
A man in a dark jacket stood near the door.
His face was hidden.
Then a voice spoke.
"Bring me the necklace, Nathan.""
The video ended.
Nathan stared at the screen.
Amara began crying.
"That's Daniel.""
Nathan looked at her.
"How do you know?""
She covered her mouth.
"Because that's the voice I heard the night he took me.""
Nathan looked toward Marcus.
"Drive.""
The car accelerated.
His phone vibrated again.
Another message.
You have ten minutes.
Nathan looked at the memory card in his palm.
For six years, he had been searching for the truth.
Now the truth was demanding the life of his daughter.
He closed his fist.
And made a decision.
May you like
Daniel was going to get the memory card.
But he wasn't going to get Lily.
