Chapter 10: The Daughter Who Was Never Lost

Nathan stared at the photograph on his phone.
His mother's name was written on the hospital card.
EVELYN CARTER.
For several seconds, he couldn't hear anything around him.
Not the officers shouting.
Not Marcus calling his name.
Not even Jada asking whether he was all right.
His mother had been dead for three years.
And according to the message, she had known the truth about Lily from the beginning.
"Nathan?""
Jada touched his shoulder.
He looked at her.
"My mother.""
"What about her?""
"Daniel says she knew everything.""
Jada's expression tightened.
"Then we need to find out what she knew.""
Nathan looked at the photograph again.
The hospital bassinet.
The medical card.
Amara standing beside it.
And a date.
Six years earlier.
He turned toward Marcus.
"Take Daniel into custody. I want every electronic device he has preserved. And find out where my mother kept her private records.""
Marcus nodded.
"What about Victoria?""
Nathan looked toward the officers.
"She needs to answer for what happened today and everything that came before it.""
Jada folded her arms.
"And Lily?""
Nathan's expression softened.
"She's with Amara. I'm going to bring her mother home.""
He looked at Jada.
"And you.""
She frowned.
"What about me?""
"You saved my daughter twice. I won't forget that.""
Jada shook her head.
"Don't make promises. Just make sure she never has to be afraid of your family again.""
Nathan nodded.
For once, he didn't argue.
The Carter family estate stood on a quiet stretch of countryside outside the city.
Nathan hadn't visited since his mother's funeral.
The house was enormous, with tall windows, marble floors, and a grand staircase that curved toward the second floor.
Everything looked expensive.
Everything felt empty.
He entered his mother's old study.
Her favorite books were still arranged on the shelves. A silver picture frame sat beside her desk.
It contained a photograph of Nathan and Daniel as children.
Nathan picked it up.
Daniel had his arm around his younger brother.
Both boys were smiling.
Nathan remembered believing his brother would protect him forever.
He placed the photograph down.
Then he opened the desk drawers.
There were financial records, old letters, insurance documents, and several family photographs.
Nothing about Amara.
Nothing about Lily.
Then he noticed a small wooden box beneath the desk.
It was locked.
Nathan remembered the key.
His mother used to wear it on a thin gold chain around her neck.
He searched the desk again.
Inside a small compartment beneath the drawer was a tiny brass key.
He inserted it.
The box opened.
Inside were three envelopes.
One had Nathan's name.
One had Daniel's.
The third had a handwritten label.
*FOR THE CHILDREN, WHEN THE TRUTH CAN NO LONGER BE HIDDEN.*
Nathan's hands trembled.
He opened his envelope.
The letter began:
My dear Nathan,
If you are reading this, then Daniel's lies have finally caught up with our family.
Nathan sat down.
He continued.
I knew about Amara. I knew she was pregnant. I knew Daniel had arranged for her to disappear. I also knew you were not the biological father of the baby she carried.
Nathan stopped.
His breathing became uneven.
He read the sentence again.
Then he continued.
But there is something Daniel never understood. Biology does not determine who deserves to be a parent.
Nathan lowered the letter.
A memory returned.
His mother had once told him that the greatest mistake a man could make was believing love was something he owned.
He had never understood what she meant.
Now he did.
The letter continued.
The night Lily was born, there were complications. Amara was unconscious. Daniel had arranged for the infant to be moved, but a nurse discovered what he was doing.
Nathan gripped the paper.
That nurse contacted me.
His mother had intervened.
I went to the hospital. I learned that Daniel had falsified records and arranged an exchange involving two newborn girls. His intention was to make Amara believe she had lost her daughter.
Nathan's eyes widened.
Two newborn girls.
He read faster.
The other child belonged to a woman who had died during childbirth. That baby had no surviving family listed on the hospital's initial paperwork. Daniel believed he could use the confusion to conceal Lily's identity.
Nathan covered his mouth.
But the nurse refused to cooperate. She protected both children and documented the truth.
He turned the page.
There was a name.
*NURSE ELENA BROOKS.*
Below it was an address.
And one final paragraph.
*I am sorry I did not tell you sooner. I believed I could stop Daniel without destroying our family. I was wrong.
If you find this letter, speak to Elena. She knows which child Amara brought into the world.*
Nathan stood immediately.
He called Marcus.
"Find Elena Brooks.""
Marcus responded within seconds.
"Already searching.""
Nathan looked down at the letter.
"She may be the only person who can establish what happened at the hospital.""
Marcus paused.
"There's another problem.""
"What?""
"Daniel is refusing to cooperate. And Victoria has requested a lawyer.""
Nathan closed his eyes.
"Let them both get one.""
"There's also a hospital archive connected to your mother's foundation. It was transferred to a private storage facility.""
Nathan looked at the address in the letter.
"Find Elena first.""
He ended the call.
Then he opened the second envelope.
The one addressed to Daniel.
He hesitated.
But he unfolded it.
Daniel,
You have spent your entire life believing that taking something from Nathan would finally make you equal to him.
You are wrong.
Your brother never stole your future. Your jealousy did.
Nathan stared at the words.
The letter ended with a sentence that made his stomach turn.
I know what you did to your father. I know why you needed Amara gone. And I know which child you tried to replace.
Nathan put the letter down.
Daniel hadn't just wanted the company.
He had wanted to rewrite the Carter family.
And his mother had known.
Elena Brooks lived in a modest house on the other side of the city.
She was sixty-eight, with silver hair and careful movements.
When Nathan introduced himself, she immediately closed the door halfway.
"I have nothing to say.""
Nathan held up his mother's letter.
"Please. My mother left this for me.""
Elena stared at the handwriting.
Her face changed.
"Evelyn?""
"She knew what happened at the hospital.""
Elena slowly opened the door.
"Come inside.""
They sat in a small living room.
Nathan placed the photograph of Lily on the coffee table.
"Is this the baby you protected?""
Elena looked at it.
Then she began crying.
"She's grown.""
Nathan leaned forward.
"Tell me everything.""
Elena took a long breath.
"Your brother arrived at the hospital the night Amara delivered. He claimed you had authorized him to make medical decisions.""
"I never did.""
"I know that now.""
"What happened?""
"Amara had a difficult delivery. She lost consciousness shortly after giving birth. Daniel used that opportunity to convince a junior administrator that the baby needed to be transferred.""
Nathan's jaw tightened.
"Transferred where?""
"To another hospital. He said there was a medical emergency.""
"But there wasn't?""
Elena shook her head.
"He was trying to separate the child from her mother.""
Nathan stared.
"And the second baby?""
Elena looked down.
"Another woman had died during delivery that same night. Her little girl had been placed in the nursery. Daniel intended to use the confusion to switch their identification records.""
Nathan felt sick.
"Why?""
"Because he wanted Amara to believe her baby had died. He thought she would leave the country and never come back.""
Nathan's voice cracked.
"Did he succeed?""
"Not completely.""
Elena opened a drawer and removed a small folder.
Inside were original hospital records.
One page contained two newborn identification numbers.
One belonged to Lily.
The other belonged to the second baby.
Elena pointed to the first.
"This was Amara's daughter.""
Nathan stared at the record.
"And the other child?""
Elena hesitated.
"That baby was eventually adopted.""
"By whom?""
Elena looked directly at him.
"Your mother.""
Nathan stopped breathing.
"What?""
"Evelyn adopted the other little girl through a private arrangement after the hospital investigation. She wanted to protect her from becoming another victim of Daniel's actions.""
Nathan stared at the page.
"She adopted her?""
Elena nodded.
"She raised her quietly. She never wanted Daniel to find her.""
Nathan's hands began shaking.
"Where is she now?""
Elena pulled another document from the folder.
It contained an adoption record.
The adoptive mother's name was Evelyn Carter.
The child's name was listed as:
*JADA CARTER.*
Nathan stared.
"No.""
Elena nodded.
"Your mother named her Jada.""
Nathan felt the room tilt.
Jada.
The woman who had rescued Lily.
The woman he had slapped.
The woman who had protected his daughter when everyone else had failed.
His mother had raised her in secret.
And he had never known.
"Where is she?"" Nathan whispered.
Elena gave him a second document.
It listed a date and a medical facility.
"Your mother arranged for her to be placed with a family she trusted after she died. But she never lost contact.""
Nathan looked at the paper.
There was a handwritten note in his mother's writing.
Jada deserves to know who she is. Tell her when the time is right.
Nathan closed his eyes.
The woman who had saved his daughter was also the daughter his mother had hidden.
But there was one more thing he needed to understand.
"Why did Daniel want to switch the babies?""
Elena looked at him.
"Because he knew something about the other child's biological family.""
Nathan leaned forward.
"What?""
Elena hesitated.
"That little girl was born to a woman whose family owned a substantial share of the company your father had helped build. Daniel believed that if he could control her identity, he could eventually control those shares.""
Nathan stared.
The truth was even uglier than he had imagined.
Daniel had been trying to steal an inheritance from a child who couldn't even speak.
And his mother had stopped him.
Nathan stood.
"Thank you.""
Elena reached for his hand.
"Your mother loved both of you. But she was afraid of what Daniel had become.""
Nathan nodded.
"I know.""
As he walked toward the door, Elena called after him.
"Mr. Carter?""
He turned.
"Yes?""
"There's something else.""
She pointed to the final page.
"The original birth records contain the DNA verification. You should have the test completed. Don't rely on the altered paperwork.""
Nathan nodded.
"I will.""
He walked out carrying the documents.
For the first time in six years, the truth was finally becoming clear.
But he still had to face Jada.
Jada was waiting at the hospital when Nathan arrived.
Amara was sitting beside her.
Lily was asleep against her mother's shoulder.
When Nathan entered, Jada stood.
"Did you find anything?""
Nathan looked at her.
"Yes.""
"About Lily?""
"About all of us.""
He placed the documents on the table.
Jada looked at the adoption record.
Then at the name.
Her face went pale.
"What's this?""
Nathan swallowed.
"My mother adopted a little girl six years ago.""
Jada stared.
"Why are you telling me?""
He gently pushed the paper toward her.
The name was unmistakable.
Jada Carter.
She shook her head.
"No.""
Nathan's eyes filled.
"Jada, I think you're that little girl.""
Jada stepped backward.
"That's impossible.""
"I know this is a lot to hear.""
"No. My parents adopted me when I was a baby. They told me everything.""
Nathan nodded.
"They may not have known the entire story.""
Jada looked at the document.
"Why would your mother hide me?""
Nathan explained what Elena had said.
He told her about Daniel.
The hospital.
The attempted baby exchange.
The inheritance.
And the reason Evelyn had secretly adopted the second child.
Jada sank into the chair.
"So your mother knew who I was?""
"Yes.""
"Did she ever try to contact me?""
Nathan looked down.
"She left a note saying you deserved to know.""
Jada wiped her cheek.
"She could have told me.""
"I know.""
"She could have let me meet her.""
Nathan sat across from her.
"I know.""
Jada looked at him.
"Why didn't you know?""
Nathan swallowed.
"Because my family spent years hiding the truth from everyone. And because I never asked the right questions.""
Amara reached for Jada's hand.
"Your mother must have loved you very much.""
Jada looked at her.
"Your mother?""
Amara smiled through her tears.
"Evelyn. She protected two little girls when nobody else would.""
Jada looked down.
For several moments, she said nothing.
Then she whispered:
"She was my mother?""
Nathan nodded.
Jada began crying.
Not quietly.
Not politely.
She covered her face and sobbed.
Nathan remained seated.
He didn't try to hug her.
He didn't tell her everything would be okay.
He simply waited.
When she finally looked up, her eyes were red.
"There's something I need to tell you.""
Nathan leaned forward.
"What?""
Jada touched the small silver necklace around her own neck.
It was a pendant she had worn since childhood.
A tiny heart.
Nathan stared.
The same design.
Jada turned it over.
Two letters were engraved on the back.
E and J.
Nathan's mother had given her the necklace.
He looked at the pendant, then at Jada.
His voice broke.
"She really was your mother.""
Jada nodded.
Then she looked at Lily.
"Does that mean we're family?""
Amara smiled.
"Yes, sweetheart.""
Jada let out a tearful laugh.
Lily woke up.
She rubbed her eyes.
"Jada?""
Jada leaned toward her.
"Hi, little princess.""
Lily reached out.
"Are you still my friend?""
Jada took her hand.
"Always.""
Lily looked at Nathan.
"Is Jada my sister?""
Nathan smiled through his tears.
"Something like that.""
Jada laughed.
"An unexpected sister, apparently.""
For the first time that day, the room felt peaceful.
But the story wasn't finished.
Nathan still had to face Daniel and Victoria.
The legal investigation would expose the financial fraud, the forged documents, the kidnapping, and the attempted murder of his daughter.
The original hospital records and DNA testing would finally establish the truth.
And when the results came back, they confirmed what Amara had always known.
Nathan was Lily's biological father.
Daniel had forged the report.
The birth certificate had been manipulated.
And Victoria had knowingly helped conceal the truth.
The case against them became impossible to ignore.
Daniel was charged for his role in the fraud, kidnapping, and the conspiracy surrounding Nathan's father.
Victoria faced charges related to her actions against Lily, her involvement in the cover-up, and the other crimes investigators uncovered.
Neither wedding nor money could protect them.
Weeks later, Nathan returned to the rooftop terrace.
This time, there were no wedding decorations.
No champagne.
No diamond-covered bride.
Only sunlight, a few simple chairs, and four people who had survived an extraordinary betrayal.
Lily ran toward the parapet, then stopped.
She looked at Nathan.
"Is it okay if I go over there?""
Nathan smiled.
"Stay on this side, princess.""
She giggled and ran toward Jada instead.
Jada was wearing a simple cream dress.
Her cheek had healed.
But Nathan had not forgotten the mark his hand had left.
He approached her.
"Jada.""
She turned.
"Yes?""
"I owe you an apology.""
"You've already apologized.""
"Not enough.""
He looked down.
"I judged you before I knew anything. I hurt you because I believed someone else's lie. And when you needed someone to defend you, I became the person you needed protection from.""
Jada studied him.
"Why are you telling me this now?""
"Because I don't want you to think that being family means you have to forgive me.""
Jada's expression softened.
"You're right. It doesn't.""
Nathan nodded.
She continued.
"But I also don't want to spend the rest of my life letting one terrible afternoon decide who we become.""
Nathan looked up.
"Does that mean—"
"It means we start over. Slowly.""
Nathan smiled.
"That's fair.""
Across the terrace, Amara sat beside Lily.
The little girl was showing her mother a drawing.
Four people stood beneath a bright yellow sun.
There was a little girl.
A woman with long curls.
A man in a black suit.
And another woman wearing a purple dress.
Above them, Lily had written:
*MY FAMILY.*
Nathan approached.
"What's this, princess?""
Lily held up the drawing.
"That's us.""
Nathan pointed to the fourth person.
"Who's that?""
Lily smiled.
"Jada. She's my sister now.""
Jada laughed.
"Apparently, I got promoted.""
Amara kissed Lily's forehead.
"Family isn't always who you expect, sweetheart.""
Lily nodded.
Then she looked at Nathan.
"Daddy?""
"Yes?""
"Are you going to marry Victoria?""
Nathan laughed softly.
"No, princess.""
"Good.""
"Why?""
Lily considered the question.
Then she gave him the simplest answer in the world.
"Because she doesn't love us.""
Nathan knelt and kissed her forehead.
"You're right. And nobody who loves us should ever make us afraid.""
Lily wrapped her arms around his neck.
Jada watched them.
The woman who had once been a frightened little girl without knowing her own history was now standing among people who would never let her feel abandoned again.
Nathan looked at the rooftop parapet.
He remembered the scream.
The fall.
The slap.
The accusation.
And the little girl who had spoken the truth when everyone else wanted her silent.
He took Amara's hand.
Then he looked at Jada.
"Ready to go home?""
Jada smiled.
"Let's go.""
Lily jumped down from the chair.
"Wait for me!""
They walked toward the glass doors together.
Four people.
One family.
And a truth that had taken six years, a hidden necklace, a forged birth certificate, and an attempted murder to finally bring into the light.
Nathan had once believed losing Amara was the worst thing that could happen to him.
He had been wrong.
The worst thing was almost losing Lily without ever knowing she existed.

And the greatest gift was discovering that the woman who saved his daughter had been part of his family all along.
*Because sometimes, the people who are meant to save your family are the very people your family failed to protect.*
