Chapter 2: The Documents Nobody Was Supposed to See

The ballroom looked like something from a magazine.

Thousands of white flowers decorated the entrance. Crystal chandeliers hung above round tables covered in ivory linen. A string quartet played softly near the grand staircase, while hotel staff hurried between guests carrying trays of champagne.

My wedding planner, Eleanor Hayes, approached me with a clipboard.

"Claire, everything is on schedule. The ceremony begins in forty minutes.""

"Wonderful.""

She smiled.

"Daniel has already arrived. He's in the groom's suite with his father.""

I nodded.

"Is his father staying for the reception?""

Eleanor checked her clipboard.

"That's what I was told.""

"Interesting.""

She looked up.

"Is something wrong?""

"Nothing at all. Just checking.""

I continued toward the bridal holding room, where Vanessa and the other bridesmaids were waiting.

Chloe was sitting on a velvet sofa, scrolling through her phone. Madison was eating strawberries from a silver tray.

Vanessa stood beside the window, speaking to someone.

When she saw me, she immediately ended the call.

"There she is!"" she announced.

"Our beautiful bride!""

Chloe stood.

"Claire, you look amazing.""

"Thank you.""

Madison smiled.

"Daniel is going to cry when he sees you.""

I placed my bouquet on the table.

"I hope he does.""

Vanessa laughed.

"Not too much, though. We don't want him ruining those expensive photographs.""

Everyone laughed.

I did too.

But I was watching Vanessa's phone.

The screen briefly lit up before she turned it facedown.

A notification appeared.

*D.W.: Make sure she signs before the reception.*

I recognized the initials.

Daniel Whitmore.

My future husband.

Vanessa noticed me looking.

"Just a message from the florist," she said casually.

"Really?""

"Yes. She's asking about the arrangements.""

I nodded.

"That's convenient. The florist has your number now?""

Vanessa blinked.

"Of course. I've been coordinating everything.""

"How thoughtful.""

She smiled tightly.

"Anything for you, sweetheart.""

A moment later, Eleanor entered.

"Claire, your mother is here.""

My mother's name was Margaret Bennett. She had flown in from Boston two days earlier and had spent the entire morning telling everyone how proud she was of me.

I stepped toward the doorway.

"Where is she?""

"In the private lounge.""

I turned to Vanessa.

"Would you mind coming with me?""

Her expression changed.

"Now?""

"Just for a moment.""

Vanessa glanced at Chloe and Madison.

"Can't one of them come?""

"No. I need you.""

For a fraction of a second, irritation crossed her face.

Then she smiled.

"Of course.""

We walked down the corridor together.

As soon as we were out of sight of the others, I stopped beside a tall arrangement of white orchids.

"Vanessa, I need to ask you something.""

She sighed.

"Claire, if this is about the seating chart, I promise I handled it.""

"It's about Daniel.""

Her smile faded.

"What about him?""

"Have you ever known him to lie?""

She stared at me.

"What kind of question is that?""

"A simple one.""

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"He's your fiancé. Surely you know him better than I do.""

"That's not an answer.""

She gave a small laugh.

"You're nervous. That's all. The wedding is a big deal.""

I watched her carefully.

"Did Daniel ever ask you to sign anything on my behalf?""

Her face went completely still.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

"Absolutely not," she answered.

"Good.""

I started walking again.

Vanessa hurried after me.

"Claire, what's going on?""

"Nothing.""

"You've been acting strange all morning.""

I turned.

"Have I?""

"Yes. First you're taking off your engagement ring, then you're asking weird questions about Daniel.""

I tilted my head.

"Maybe I'm finally paying attention.""

She frowned.

Before she could respond, my mother appeared at the end of the hallway.

"Claire!""

I walked toward her and embraced her.

"Mom.""

She held me at arm's length.

"Oh, honey. You're beautiful.""

"Thank you.""

Her eyes moved toward Vanessa.

"Everything all right?""

Vanessa smiled.

"Perfect. I'm just making sure our bride doesn't get overwhelmed.""

My mother nodded politely.

Then she leaned closer to me.

"Can I speak with you alone?""

I glanced at Vanessa.

"Of course.""

Vanessa stepped back.

"I'll be with the girls.""

She walked away, her heels clicking against the marble.

My mother watched until she disappeared.

Then her expression changed.

"Claire, I need to tell you something.""

My stomach tightened.

"What?""

She reached into her handbag and pulled out a folded envelope.

"I found this in your father's old desk.""

My father had died five years earlier. He had been a cautious businessman who believed that every important promise should be documented.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten note.

Claire, if you're reading this, someone has probably convinced you that trust is more important than verification. Never sign anything without understanding who benefits.

My throat tightened.

"What is this?""

My mother took my hand.

"Your father was investigating Daniel's company before he died.""

I stared at her.

"Daniel?""

"Yes.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"I didn't have enough proof. And after your father died, Daniel's company offered to help settle some outstanding matters connected to his estate.""

My blood ran cold.

"Daniel helped with Dad's estate?""

"Not directly. His attorney did.""

I looked at the note again.

At the bottom, my father had written a name.

*Martin Cole.*

I recognized it.

Martin was my father's former accountant.

"Mom, where is Martin?""

"He called me yesterday.""

"What did he say?""

"That your father left something for you. Something he couldn't safely give you until today.""

I looked toward the corridor where Vanessa had disappeared.

"Where is it?""

My mother lowered her voice.

"With a private attorney downtown.""

I took a slow breath.

"Mom, did you know Daniel wanted me to sign a new agreement?""

Her eyes widened.

"What agreement?""

I showed her the photograph on my phone.

She stared at it for several seconds.

Then she whispered, "Oh, Claire.""

The room seemed to tilt.

"What?""

She gripped my arm.

"Your father warned me about this.""

I looked at her.

"About what?""

"About a document that would transfer control of your inheritance after your marriage.""

I swallowed.

"My inheritance?""

My father had left me a trust containing commercial properties, investment accounts, and a controlling interest in Bennett Holdings.

I'd always believed those assets were protected by an independent trustee.

My mother shook her head.

"Your father said someone might try to make you believe the trust needed restructuring before the wedding.""

I felt my pulse quicken.

"Did Daniel know about it?""

"I don't know.""

A sudden voice interrupted us.

"Claire?""

Daniel stood at the entrance.

He wore a perfectly tailored black tuxedo, a white rose pinned to his lapel, and the confident smile I'd once found irresistible.

He approached us.

"There's my beautiful bride.""

He kissed my forehead.

"Are you hiding from me?""

I smiled.

"Just talking to Mom.""

Daniel looked at the envelope in my hand.

"What's that?""

"Something from my father.""

His expression changed almost imperceptibly.

Then he reached for it.

"Let me see.""

I pulled it closer to my chest.

"It's personal.""

He gave a soft laugh.

"Of course. I didn't mean anything.""

My mother stepped forward.

"Daniel, do you know Martin Cole?""

For the first time, his smile disappeared completely.

"Why?""

"Claire found a note.""

Daniel looked at me.

"What note?""

I held his gaze.

"One that suggests my father didn't trust everyone around me.""

He stared at me for several seconds.

Then he smiled again.

"Claire, your father was a wonderful man, but he was always suspicious of businesspeople.""

"Was he suspicious of you?""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"That's ridiculous.""

"Then you won't mind if I speak to Martin.""

Daniel glanced toward the ballroom.

"Not today. We have a wedding to finish.""

I almost laughed.

A wedding to finish.

As if my life were a business transaction.

He reached for my hand.

"Come on. The ceremony is waiting.""

I let him take it.

But I didn't squeeze back.

As we approached the ballroom, I noticed Vanessa standing near the entrance.

She was watching us.

When Daniel caught her eye, she nodded.

He nodded back.

A tiny exchange.

Barely noticeable.

But now I understood.

They weren't simply friends.

They were coordinating.

And whatever they were planning, they were getting nervous.

The ceremony began twenty minutes later.

I stood behind the closed double doors, bouquet in hand, while the string quartet played the opening notes.

Eleanor approached me.

"Ready, Claire?""

I nodded.

Then my phone vibrated.

A new message appeared.

*Attorney has reviewed the forged agreement. There's something else. Call immediately.*

I stepped away from the doors.

My mother noticed.

"Claire?""

I showed her the message.

She read it, then looked at me.

"Don't go out there until you know.""

I pressed the call button.

A man's voice answered.

"Claire Bennett?""

"Yes.""

"This is Martin Cole.""

My knees almost gave way.

"Martin. What did you find?""

He paused.

Then he said something that made me grip the phone with both hands.

"Your father didn't just leave you a trust, Claire. He left you the controlling shares of Whitmore Financial.""

I stared at the floor.

"Whitmore Financial?""

"Yes. The company Daniel has been claiming he owns.""

My breath caught.

"That's impossible.""

"Your father acquired it through a holding company years ago. Daniel has been managing it, but he never owned the controlling interest.""

I looked toward the ballroom doors.

Beyond them, my fiancé was waiting at the altar.

And suddenly, I understood why he needed me to sign those papers.

Martin continued.

"There's one more thing you need to know.""

"What?""

"Daniel isn't the only person involved. The forged agreement was prepared by someone who has had access to your family's legal records for years.""

I closed my eyes.

"Who?""

Martin lowered his voice.

"Your maid of honour, Claire. Vanessa Reed.""

The music swelled.

The doors began to open.

May you like

And as the guests rose to their feet, I realized the woman waiting to walk me down the aisle was the same woman who had been helping steal my future.

But I still didn't know how much she'd taken.
