Chapter 1: The Whispers Behind the Door

“Just make sure she signs everything before the ceremony. Once she says ‘I do,’ there’s no going back.””

The voice came from the hallway.

And the woman speaking it was supposed to be the happiest person standing beside me on my wedding day.

I froze beside the vanity, one hand resting on the pearl buttons of my dusty-rose satin robe. My makeup artist had just stepped out to collect another set of lashes, leaving me alone in the luxurious bridal preparation suite of the Hawthorne Grand Hotel.

Sunlight poured through enormous windows overlooking the manicured gardens. White roses filled crystal vases. Champagne chilled in silver buckets. My wedding dress hung from a brass garment rack, its long train carefully arranged beneath the soft glow of a chandelier.

Everything looked perfect.

Everything except the voices outside.

I recognized Vanessa Reed immediately.

My maid of honour. My best friend of twelve years. The woman who had stood beside me when my father died, held my hand through my divorce scare with a previous boyfriend, and promised she would never let anyone hurt me.

She was wearing the ruby-red bridesmaid dress I'd personally chosen for her.

Beside her stood Chloe in sapphire blue and Madison in champagne gold.

Their voices dropped into whispers.

Then came the laughter.

I moved toward the open doorway, careful not to let my heels make a sound against the marble floor.

Vanessa was holding a champagne flute. She leaned against the wall, her ruby-red dress catching the light.

Chloe glanced toward my suite.

"Do you really think she'll notice?"" Chloe asked.

Vanessa laughed.

"Notice what? She's been too busy playing princess to notice anything for months.""

Madison covered her mouth.

"Vanessa, don't say that so loudly.""

"Oh, please. She's getting married in three hours. What exactly is she going to do?""

My fingers tightened around the doorframe.

Then Chloe said something that made the room seem suddenly colder.

"What about the money?""

Vanessa lowered her glass.

"After the ceremony, Daniel will take care of that. The paperwork is already prepared.""

Madison hesitated.

"And if she refuses to sign?""

Vanessa smiled.

"She won't. Daniel knows exactly how to handle her.""

I stepped backward.

My heart was beating so hard I could feel it in my throat.

Daniel.

My fiancé.

The man I'd spent the last two years believing was different from everyone who had disappointed me.

I returned to the vanity and stared at my reflection.

My hair was pinned in loose Hollywood waves. My makeup was flawless. A delicate diamond necklace rested against my collarbone.

I looked like a woman about to marry the love of her life.

I felt like a woman standing in the middle of a trap.

My phone vibrated.

I glanced down.

A message appeared from an unsaved number.

*Second safe secured. On it.*

I read it once.

Then again.

My stomach tightened.

For a moment, I couldn't understand what I was looking at. Then I remembered the conversation I'd had three weeks earlier, the one I'd almost convinced myself had been unnecessary.

I quickly checked the hallway.

Vanessa was still there.

She was showing Chloe something on her phone. Madison leaned closer, and all three women burst into laughter.

I pressed my phone against my ear.

"Is it done?"" I whispered.

A familiar voice answered.

"Yes. The second safe is secured. The first one is still untouched.""

"Did you get the documents?""

"Every page.""

I closed my eyes.

"Are you absolutely certain?""

"Claire, I wouldn't call you on your wedding morning if I weren't.""

My name is Claire Bennett.

And until that moment, I had planned to walk down the aisle believing I was about to become Mrs. Daniel Whitmore.

I opened my eyes.

"Good," I whispered.

"Then proceed exactly as we discussed.""

There was a pause.

"Are you sure you want to do this today?""

I looked toward the hallway.

Vanessa was now adjusting Chloe's necklace, smiling like a proud sister.

"Especially today," I replied.

I ended the call.

My reflection had changed.

The trembling in my fingers had stopped. My shoulders straightened. The frightened expression slowly disappeared, replaced by a faint smile.

I removed the engagement ring from my finger.

Not because I intended to surrender it.

Because I wanted to examine it.

The enormous diamond glittered beneath the chandelier. Daniel had presented it to me at a private dinner overlooking the Manhattan skyline. He'd told me it was a symbol of his commitment.

Now I wondered what else he'd purchased with the money he had supposedly earned himself.

I slipped the ring into a small velvet pouch and placed it inside my handbag.

Then I picked up my wedding dress's matching silk shoes.

A knock sounded.

"Claire?"" Vanessa called sweetly.

"Are you ready, sweetheart?""

I looked at the closed jewelry box.

"Almost!""

The door opened before I could move.

Vanessa entered without waiting for permission.

"Girl, you look incredible!""

She approached me with both arms extended, then stopped when she noticed my bare ring finger.

Her smile faltered.

"Where's your ring?""

I glanced down.

"Oh, I took it off while getting my hands done.""

Vanessa's eyes moved toward my handbag.

"Don't lose that thing. Daniel would have a heart attack.""

I smiled.

"Wouldn't want that.""

She laughed, but her eyes remained fixed on me.

"Anyway, we have to get moving. The photographer wants pictures of us together before the ceremony.""

"Of course.""

Vanessa stepped closer and adjusted a loose strand of my hair.

"You know, Claire, I've dreamed about this day for you.""

I met her eyes through the mirror.

"Have you?""

"Absolutely. You've always deserved a fairy tale.""

For one brief second, I almost laughed.

Instead, I reached for her hand.

"Vanessa?""

"Yes, darling?""

"Do you think people ever pretend to love someone because they want something from them?""

Her fingers went still.

"What a strange question.""

"Just something I was thinking about.""

Vanessa recovered quickly.

"Don't let wedding nerves get to you. Everyone loves you.""

She kissed my cheek.

Then she walked out.

I waited until her footsteps disappeared.

My phone vibrated again.

This time, the message contained a photograph.

It showed a black leather document folder sitting inside a steel safe.

On top of the folder was a handwritten label.

*CLAIRE BENNETT — ORIGINALS.*

Below it was another message.

*You were right about Daniel. But you need to see what's inside before you make your decision.*

I stared at the screen.

Then I noticed something in the photograph.

A second folder was visible behind the first.

Its label contained two words.

*WEDDING AGREEMENT.*

I zoomed in.

The document had my signature on it.

A signature I had never written.

And suddenly, I understood that the people waiting for me at the altar weren't simply planning to steal my money.

They had already begun forging my future.

I slipped my phone into my handbag, picked up my bouquet, and walked toward the door.

Vanessa and the other bridesmaids were waiting in the hallway.

They turned toward me with matching smiles.

"Ready, beautiful?"" Vanessa asked.

I looked at all three women.

"More than ready.""

May you like

And for the first time that morning, I meant it.

Because the wedding they had planned was about to become something none of them could control.
