Chapter 6: The Girl Who Had Been Stolen Twice

Marcus stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.

The toddler in the picture was Lily.

There was no question.

The same dark eyes. The same dimple in her left cheek. The same tiny birthmark near her wrist that Marcus had kissed a thousand times when she was small.

But the woman holding her was not Claire.

It was Margaret Bell.

The woman who had supposedly taken the missing baby.

The woman who had died eight months earlier.

Marcus looked at Agent Brooks.

“Why does Margaret have a photograph of my daughter?””

Brooks studied the screen.

“Because we believe this image was taken during the period when someone was trying to establish the child's identity.””

“Establish her identity?””

“Mr. Carter, the original hospital records indicate that two infants were delivered that night. One was registered as Lily Carter. The other was recorded as an unnamed female infant who died shortly after birth.””

Marcus swallowed.

“And you're saying the second baby was alive.””

“We believe so. But there's something unusual about the records.””

Brooks enlarged the photograph.

“Look at the bracelet.””

Marcus leaned closer.

The tiny white band around the toddler's wrist had a handwritten number.

Not a name.

A number.

Beneath it was a small red stamp from St. Catherine's Hospital.

Marcus recognized the hospital.

It was the same facility where Lily had been born.

He turned toward Patricia.

“You said the second baby was given to Margaret.””

Patricia nodded faintly.

“That's what I was told.””

“Then why is Margaret holding Lily?””

Patricia stared at the screen.

“I don't know.””

For the first time, Marcus believed her.

Not because she had become trustworthy, but because her fear had changed. The cold confidence she had carried throughout the wedding was gone.

She looked genuinely lost.

Evelyn stepped closer to the photograph.

“That's not possible.””

Marcus turned toward her.

“What isn't?””

Evelyn pointed at the toddler's left hand.

“Look at the fingers.””

He frowned.

“What about them?””

“The child has a small scar between the thumb and forefinger.””

Marcus zoomed in.

There it was.

A faint pale line.

He looked down at Lily.

Her left hand was wrapped around the silver photograph frame.

He gently took it and turned her palm upward.

A tiny scar marked the same place.

Lily looked at him.

“What are you doing, Daddy?””

He couldn't speak.

Evelyn began to cry.

“That's the child in the photograph,” she whispered.

“But it doesn't explain why Margaret had her.””

Agent Brooks closed the image.

“There's another issue. The photograph wasn't found among Margaret's belongings. It was submitted anonymously to our office last week.””

Marcus's head snapped up.

“By whom?””

“We don't know. The sender included a short note.””

Brooks removed a folded piece of paper from his pocket.

He read it aloud.

You have been looking for the wrong child. The daughter who was taken is still alive, but she is not the girl you think she is.

Marcus felt his stomach twist.

He looked at Lily.

The little girl had gone completely still.

“What does that mean?”” she whispered.

Marcus pulled her close.

“I don't know yet.””

Vanessa suddenly began laughing.

It was a small, broken sound that made everyone turn toward her.

“You're all looking at the wrong thing,” she said.

Marcus stared at her.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa looked at Lily.

Then at the photograph.

Then at Patricia.

“You keep asking who the missing baby was,” she said.

“But none of you have asked the question that matters.””

Evelyn stepped toward her.

“What question?””

Vanessa's smile vanished.

“Which baby did they actually take?””

The words landed with devastating force.

Marcus felt Lily's fingers tighten around his.

Brooks stared at Vanessa.

“Explain.””

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

“When Claire gave birth, there were two girls. One was healthy. The other had breathing problems. The doctors told us that the second baby might not survive the night.””

Marcus shook his head.

“That's not what the records say.””

“Because the records were changed.””

Vanessa looked at Patricia.

“Tell him.””

Patricia pressed her hands together.

“Vanessa, please.””

“Tell him what Thomas ordered.””

Patricia's eyes filled with tears.

“The babies were placed in separate rooms while the doctors worked.””

Marcus felt cold.

“Why?””

“Your grandfather had already learned about the trust,” Patricia whispered.

“He believed that if both girls survived, the family would face a legal battle over the shares.””

“So he ordered one baby to be hidden?””

“He ordered the weaker baby to be transferred to a private facility. He said she would receive better treatment there.””

“And the other baby?””

Patricia looked toward Lily.

“She stayed with Claire.””

Marcus's voice trembled.

“Which one stayed?””

Patricia shook her head.

“I don't know.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Yes, you do.””

Patricia looked at her.

Vanessa's eyes were blazing.

“You told me that the child who stayed with Claire was the healthy one. You told me that the other baby died. You made me believe there was nothing left to look for.””

Patricia's lips trembled.

“That's what Thomas told me.””

“And you never questioned him?””

“He was my father!””

“And Claire was your family!””

The words echoed through the ballroom.

For a moment, Patricia looked as if she might collapse.

Then she whispered, “The child who was transferred had a small medical bracelet. It carried the number 27.””

Marcus looked at Agent Brooks.

“The photograph.””

Brooks nodded slowly.

“The bracelet in the photograph appears to carry that number.””

Marcus stared at Lily.

“If the child in the photograph was the transferred baby, then why does she look exactly like Lily?””

Vanessa's voice softened.

“Because they were identical twins.””

Marcus felt the room spin.

He had known that Claire had a twin sister.

He had never imagined that his own daughter might have a twin, too.

He looked down at Lily.

She was staring at him, her face pale.

“Daddy,” she whispered, “am I the baby who was sick?””

Marcus knelt and took her hands.

“No one is going to call you sick, sweetheart. And no matter what these papers say, you are safe with me.””

“But do I have a twin?””

He looked at her tearful eyes.

“I think you might.””

Lily's mouth trembled.

“Where is she?””

No one answered.

Agent Brooks stepped away to make another call.

Evelyn sat heavily in a chair, her hands covering her face.

Vanessa stood motionless beside the ruined wedding table.

And Patricia stared at the photograph as if she were seeing a ghost.

Marcus rose slowly.

He had one question left.

“Why did you let me believe Claire was dead?””

Patricia looked at him.

“Because she came to me after the accident.””

Marcus stopped breathing.

“What?””

“Claire survived the crash,” Patricia whispered.

“She was badly injured, but she survived.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Evelyn stood abruptly.

“You told me she was dead!””

Patricia began to cry.

“I thought she would die. The doctors said she might never wake up. And when she did, she refused to tell anyone where the missing baby was.””

Marcus stared at his mother.

“You knew Claire was alive.””

“For eleven months.””

The answer was barely audible.

Marcus stepped backward.

Eleven months.

The same period during which someone had paid the private clinic's bills.

The same eleven months in which he had visited Claire's grave, brought flowers, and told Lily stories about her mother.

He had been mourning a woman who was alive.

A woman who had asked for him.

A woman who had been kept away from her own child.

“Where was she?”” he demanded.

Patricia shook her head.

“I don't know where she went after the clinic.””

“You said she refused to tell anyone where the baby was.””

“She was afraid.””

“Of whom?””

Patricia looked toward Vanessa.

“Of her sister.””

Vanessa recoiled.

“That's a lie!””

“Claire believed you had caused the accident.””

“I didn't!””

“She believed you wanted her dead.””

Vanessa's face crumpled.

“I was trying to save her!””

Marcus stared at her.

“You followed her on the night of the crash. You watched her car burn. You helped Patricia conceal the truth. And now you want me to believe you were trying to save her?””

Vanessa shook her head desperately.

“I went back to the car!””

“After what?””

“After she crashed!””

“Why didn't you call for help?””

“I did!””

The shout silenced the room.

Vanessa's shoulders shook.

“I called the emergency number. I tried to pull her out. I burned my hands on the door. Then Patricia arrived, and she told me to leave.””

Marcus stared at her.

“You left Claire there?””

“I thought the ambulance was coming!””

“And you never told me?””

Vanessa looked at him through her tears.

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That if you knew I was there, you'd never forgive me.””

Marcus let out a bitter laugh.

“You were right.””

Vanessa bowed her head.

For a moment, the only sound in the ballroom was the rain striking the tall windows.

Then Agent Brooks returned.

“We've identified the sender of the photograph.””

Marcus turned toward him.

“Who?””

Brooks looked at the screen of his phone.

“The message came through a private account. But the image was uploaded from a device registered to a woman named Eleanor Price.””

Evelyn gasped.

Marcus looked at her.

“Do you know her?””

Evelyn nodded slowly.

“She was Claire's nurse at the Boston clinic.””

Brooks continued.

“We contacted the facility. The nurse left the clinic six years ago. She now works at a rehabilitation center in upstate New York.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Does she know where Claire is?””

“She refused to answer that question over the phone.””

“Then we're going there.””

Brooks raised a hand.

“Mr. Carter, we need to proceed carefully.””

“I've spent six years doing nothing because my mother told me my wife was dead. I'm done waiting.””

He turned toward Lily.

“Sweetheart, we're going to find out what happened.””

Lily nodded, wiping her cheeks.

“Will we find Mommy?””

Marcus looked at the photograph one more time.

“I hope so.””

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“Don't go to the clinic.””

Everyone turned.

Marcus stared at her.

“Why?””

Vanessa's eyes darted toward the entrance.

“Because Eleanor isn't the only person who knows where Claire is.””

Agent Brooks stepped closer.

“Who else knows?””

Vanessa swallowed.

Then she looked at Marcus and said the words that made him feel as though the floor had disappeared beneath him.

“The person who took the second baby.””

Marcus's heart pounded.

“Margaret Bell is dead.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Margaret didn't take the baby.””

Patricia closed her eyes.

Evelyn whispered, “Then who did?””

Vanessa looked at the two agents.

Then at Marcus.

And finally at Lily.

“Claire did.””

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Marcus felt as if he had been struck.

“My wife took her own child?””

Vanessa nodded, tears streaming down her face.

“She escaped from the clinic. She found out where the baby had been sent, and she took her before Patricia could move her again.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Why would she leave Lily behind?””

Vanessa's voice broke.

“She didn't.””

Lily lifted her head.

“What?””

Vanessa stared at the child.

“Claire took one baby with her. The other baby stayed with the family.””

Marcus felt his chest tighten.

“Which baby did she take?””

Vanessa's lips trembled.

“The one who wasn't supposed to survive.””

Agent Brooks slowly turned toward Lily.

Then he looked at the photograph again.

The toddler in Margaret's arms.

The bracelet marked with the number 27.

The tiny scar between the thumb and forefinger.

Marcus felt a terrible realization beginning to form.

He looked down at his daughter.

For six years, he had believed Lily was the child Claire had carried home from the hospital.

But if Claire had taken the other baby, and if the records had been switched, then the child Marcus had raised might not be the daughter he thought he had lost.

He knelt in front of Lily.

She was crying silently now, her small shoulders trembling.

“Daddy,” she whispered, “what if Mommy doesn't know where I am?””

Marcus pulled her into his arms.

“Then we'll find her,” he said.

“And what if she doesn't know me?””

He closed his eyes.

“Then I'll tell her everything.””

Lily clung to him.

Across the room, Vanessa watched them with a strange expression—part grief, part guilt, and something else Marcus couldn't name.

Agent Brooks received another message.

He read it once.

Then again.

His face changed.

“Mr. Carter,” he said quietly, “we've just received confirmation from the rehabilitation center.””

Marcus stood.

“About Eleanor?””

Brooks nodded.

“She agreed to meet us. But she insisted on one condition.””

“What condition?””

“She wants to speak to the child first.””

Marcus felt Lily's hand tighten around his.

“Why?””

Brooks looked at the photograph one last time.

“Because she says she knows which twin you're raising.””

May you like

Then he lowered his voice.

“And she says the other one has been living with your wife for six years.””
