Chapter 4: The Dead Woman's Name

“Claire Carter?””

The man's voice carried through the ballroom, cutting through the whispers and the soft sobbing of wedding guests.

Marcus turned toward the entrance.

Two men stood beneath the golden archway. The taller one wore a charcoal suit, carried a leather briefcase, and held a badge in his left hand. The other, younger and broad-shouldered, had one hand resting near his belt.

The taller man stepped forward.

“I'm Special Agent Daniel Brooks, with the FBI. We need to speak with Claire Elizabeth Carter.””

Marcus felt his fingers tighten around Lily's hand.

“My wife is dead.””

Agent Brooks looked at him carefully.

“Mr. Carter, we have reason to believe that may not be true.””

A woman in the front row gasped.

Somewhere behind Marcus, a guest whispered, “This can't be real.””

Patricia Carter straightened her shoulders and moved between the agents and her family.

“This is a private wedding,” she said.

“Whatever your business is, you can discuss it with our attorneys on Monday.””

“Mrs. Carter,” Agent Brooks replied, “we've been trying to contact you for three days.””

“Then you should have made an appointment.””

“We attempted to reach you through your office, your residence, and your attorney. All three declined to cooperate.””

Patricia's jaw tightened.

Marcus stared at his mother.

“You knew they were coming?””

“Marcus, don't start.””

“Did you know the FBI was looking for Claire?””

Patricia lowered her voice.

“Your grandfather's estate has been under investigation for years. These people will do anything to get what they want.””

Agent Brooks opened his briefcase.

“We're investigating financial fraud, the falsification of medical records, and the disappearance of documents connected to Carter Meridian's original ownership structure.””

He glanced at Vanessa.

“We also have questions about a woman who used the identity of Claire Carter following a fatal automobile accident in October 2020.””

Vanessa grabbed the edge of the bridal table.

“I don't know anything about that.””

Agent Brooks studied her exposed face.

“Then you won't mind answering a few questions.””

“I've just been publicly humiliated at my wedding!””

“I'm sorry about that, ma'am. But three years ago, a confidential source provided us with evidence that a woman matching your description was involved in an identity substitution after the accident.””

Vanessa's lips trembled.

Marcus looked at her.

“Three years?””

The agent nodded.

“The investigation was delayed because the medical records had been altered, the original witnesses had either disappeared or refused to cooperate, and the estate's legal team repeatedly challenged our requests for documents.””

He turned toward Patricia.

“Your attorney has been informed that we intend to execute a search warrant at your residence.””

Patricia's face lost its color.

“You can't search my house.””

“We can, Mrs. Carter.””

She looked toward the two men at the door as if she expected someone to rescue her.

No one moved.

Then Vanessa did something that made Marcus's heart sink.

She reached for the wedding ring on her finger.

“I want a lawyer,” she said.

Agent Brooks nodded.

“You're entitled to legal counsel. But before you make any decisions, I suggest you tell us where Claire is.””

Vanessa's fingers stopped moving.

Marcus stared at her.

“What did he just ask you?””

Vanessa said nothing.

Agent Brooks repeated the question.

“Where is Claire Carter?””

The bride's eyes filled with tears.

“I don't know.””

“You were the last person known to have seen her before the accident.””

“I told you. I saw the crash. I didn't know she survived.””

Agent Brooks exchanged a look with his colleague.

“Then explain why someone using your name contacted a private medical facility in Boston six years ago and paid for a patient to be transferred under a false identity.””

Vanessa staggered backward.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Marcus looked from one woman to the other.

“Boston?””

Agent Brooks removed a photograph from his briefcase.

It showed a small private clinic surrounded by bare trees. The image had been taken from the street. A black car was parked near the entrance.

“On November 3, 2020, a woman was admitted to this facility under the name Elizabeth Morgan. She had severe injuries consistent with a motor vehicle accident. Her medical expenses were paid through an account linked to Carter Meridian.””

Marcus felt cold.

“Who was she?””

“We believe she was Claire.””

Vanessa began shaking her head.

“No. No, she died.””

“Then why did someone continue paying her medical bills for eleven months?””

The room seemed to lose all its air.

Marcus stared at the photograph.

Eleven months.

Someone had kept his wife alive—or had known that she was alive—while he mourned her in a house full of flowers and sympathy cards.

He remembered Lily asking for her mother every night.

He remembered carrying his daughter to bed when she cried herself to sleep.

He remembered telling her that Mommy was in heaven.

A sound escaped his throat, somewhere between a laugh and a sob.

“Who paid the bills?””

Agent Brooks looked at Patricia.

“We're tracing the account.””

Patricia shook her head.

“I had nothing to do with a clinic in Boston.””

Evelyn's voice rose.

“Liar!””

She reached for Patricia's arm, but the older woman pulled away.

“You knew Claire was alive,” Evelyn cried.

“You told me she had died! You made me believe both my sisters were gone!””

Patricia's face twisted.

“I did what I had to do.””

“For whom?””

“For all of you!””

Marcus stepped toward her.

“Don't you dare use that excuse again.””

Patricia stared at him.

“You have no idea what your grandfather was capable of. He would have destroyed every one of us if those documents had reached the police.””

“And what did you destroy instead?””

She didn't answer.

Marcus felt Lily squeeze his hand.

“Daddy?””

He crouched beside her.

“I'm here, sweetheart.””

“Does this mean Mommy might still be alive?””

He looked into his daughter's tearful eyes.

For six years, he had told her the truth as he understood it. Now every memory had become a question.

“I don't know,” he whispered.

“But I'm going to find out.””

Lily nodded, then leaned against him.

Vanessa watched them.

Something changed in her face.

For a moment, she looked almost human beneath the expensive makeup and the ruined wedding dress.

“Marcus,” she whispered.

He stood without looking at her.

“Don't.””

“Please. You have to understand what happened.””

“I understand that you lied to me about your name, your family, and your past. I understand that you let my daughter believe her mother was dead while you stood in her place.””

“I didn't choose all of this!””

“You chose to marry me.””

Vanessa flinched.

“I loved you.””

“You loved the life you thought I could give you.””

“That isn't true.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

Vanessa looked toward the agents.

Then she looked at Patricia.

The older woman shook her head almost imperceptibly.

It was a warning.

A final attempt to control the story.

Vanessa swallowed.

“The clinic was real,” she admitted.

“I visited it.””

Marcus felt his pulse pounding in his ears.

“When?””

“Six years ago.””

“Was Claire there?””

Vanessa began to cry.

“Yes.””

The single word struck Marcus harder than any confession before it.

He gripped the back of a chair.

“What did you do to her?””

“I didn't hurt her!””

“Then why didn't you tell me?””

Vanessa looked at him helplessly.

“Because she didn't want you to know where she was.””

“That makes no sense.””

“She was afraid of you.””

Marcus recoiled.

“Afraid of me?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She told me that if you found her, you would take Lily away from her forever.””

For several seconds, Marcus couldn't speak.

Then he shook his head.

“You're lying again.””

“I swear I'm not.””

“Why would Claire be afraid of me?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Before she could answer, Agent Brooks stepped between them.

“That's enough for now. Mrs. Reed, you'll accompany us for questioning.

Mrs. Carter, we need you to come with us as well.””

Patricia raised her chin.

“I won't go anywhere without my attorney.””

“You're not under arrest at this time,” Brooks said.

“But you will need to cooperate with the investigation.””

Evelyn moved closer to Marcus.

“There's something you need to know about Claire's fear,” she whispered.

Marcus turned toward her.

“What?””

Evelyn looked at Lily.

Then she lowered her voice.

“Claire didn't leave because she was afraid of losing her daughter.””

Marcus felt his chest tighten.

“Then why did she leave?””

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

“Because she discovered what your family had done before she married you.””

She reached into her coat and removed a folded letter.

The paper was creased, its edges softened by years of handling.

On the front, written in familiar handwriting, was Marcus's name.

He recognized it instantly.

Claire's handwriting.

His hands began to shake.

“Where did you get this?””

“It was delivered to me three weeks ago by someone who refused to give me a name. I was going to bring it to you privately, but I never expected to find you standing here with Vanessa.””

Marcus unfolded the letter.

There were only a few lines.

Marcus, if you're reading this, it means the truth has finally reached you.

I'm sorry I let you believe I was gone.

But before you look for me, you must find out what happened to our daughter.

Do not trust Patricia.

And whatever you do, do not let Lily see the original birth certificate.

Marcus read the final line twice.

Then he looked at his daughter.

“Why would Claire say that?””

Evelyn's face crumpled.

“Because Lily's birth certificate was changed.””

Across the ballroom, Patricia suddenly lunged toward the letter.

“Give me that!””

Marcus pulled it away.

Agent Brooks caught Patricia by the arm.

“Mrs. Carter, step back.””

She struggled against his grip, her face twisted with fury.

“You don't understand! If that document gets out, everything is finished!””

Marcus stared at her.

“What document?””

Patricia stopped struggling.

Her eyes shifted toward Lily.

May you like

Then, in a voice so quiet that only the people nearest her could hear, she whispered:

“The one that proves Lily isn't who you think she is.””
