Chapter 4: The Secret Inside Her Father’s Will

The older man in the gray suit walked toward the stage, carrying a leather folder that looked as though it had survived years of dust, rain, and secrets.

Maya stared at him.

She recognized his face, but it took her several seconds to remember where she had seen it before.

“Mr. Bennett?”” she whispered.

The man nodded.

“I’m sorry, Maya. I had hoped we could have this conversation somewhere more private.””

Vanessa let out a sharp laugh.

“Private? There is nothing private about this. That girl has spent years pretending she deserves things that were never hers.””

Mr. Bennett stopped at the foot of the stage.

“Mrs. Sterling, I would advise you to choose your next words carefully.””

Vanessa lifted her chin.

“Who exactly do you think you are?””

“Richard Bennett. I was your late husband’s attorney for twenty-three years.””

The ballroom erupted in whispers.

Maya felt the floor shift beneath her feet.

Richard Bennett had been a frequent visitor at her father's house when she was younger. He used to bring Daniel thick folders and leave with a pocket full of peppermint candies Maya had sneaked from the kitchen.

After her father's funeral, she had seen him only once.

Vanessa had told her he was retiring and that all the family's legal affairs had been settled.

Apparently, that had been another lie.

Richard climbed the stage and placed his folder on the judges' table.

“Before we discuss the will, I want to make one thing clear. Maya's father was very specific about his intentions.””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Daniel was ill when he made those decisions. He wasn't thinking clearly.””

Richard looked at her.

“He was perfectly lucid. Two independent physicians confirmed that before the document was signed.””

“Then why have I never heard about this mysterious will?””

“Because you were not named as its primary beneficiary.””

Vanessa's face tightened.

Chloe looked from her mother to the attorney.

“What does that mean?””

Richard opened the folder.

“It means Daniel made provisions for his daughter that were entirely separate from the assets he left his wife.””

Maya stepped closer.

“What provisions?””

Richard removed a sealed envelope.

The paper was yellowed at the edges. Her name was written across the front in her father's unmistakable handwriting.

*For Maya, when she is ready to stand on her own wings.*

Maya's hand flew to her mouth.

It was the same phrase he had written inside her black notebook.

She reached for the envelope, but Richard gently held it back.

“There's something you need to understand first. Your father asked me to deliver this letter when you turned twenty-one or when you entered a recognized design competition, whichever happened first.””

Maya swallowed.

“Why tonight?””

“Because your father also left instructions regarding your workshop, your designs, and the money intended to help you build your career.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“This is absurd. Daniel never owned anything that belonged exclusively to Maya. Everything was part of the family estate.””

Richard turned a page.

“Actually, the original workshop was purchased through a trust established in Maya's name when she was twelve. The property was never transferred to the marital estate.””

The room became so quiet that Maya could hear the soft hum of the stage lights.

“What?”” she whispered.

Richard nodded.

“Your father wanted you to have a place where you could create without anyone controlling your work. He also established an educational fund and a separate account for the commercial use of your original designs.””

Maya stared at him.

“How much?””

“Enough to cover your education, equipment, and the initial costs of establishing an independent studio. The current balance, including accumulated investment returns, is approximately four hundred and eighty thousand dollars.””

Maya's knees nearly buckled.

Four hundred and eighty thousand dollars.

For years, she had repaired broken sewing machines, sold handmade accessories online, and saved every dollar she could. She had worked through holidays and skipped meals to afford materials.

Meanwhile, the money her father had intended for her future had been sitting in an account she didn't know existed.

Vanessa's face turned crimson.

“That money was supposed to support the household!””

“No,” Richard replied.

“It was intended to support Maya's education and professional development.””

“I raised her!””

“And Daniel acknowledged your role as her stepmother. That did not give you ownership of her trust.””

Vanessa slammed her palm against the table.

“You have no idea what I sacrificed for this family!””

Richard didn't flinch.

“I know enough to understand why Daniel added a clause requiring an independent review of the trust if anyone attempted to use Maya's inheritance for personal benefit.””

Maya looked at Vanessa.

For the first time, she saw genuine fear in her stepmother's eyes.

Not embarrassment.

Not anger.

Fear.

Chloe whispered, “Mom, what did you do?””

Vanessa ignored her.

“Richard, we can discuss this privately. Surely you understand that a public misunderstanding could damage everyone involved.””

“There is no misunderstanding.””

“Think about Daniel's reputation!””

“I am thinking about it. That's why I'm honoring his written instructions.””

Vanessa's voice dropped.

“If you proceed with this, I'll sue.””

Richard closed the folder.

“You are welcome to consult your own attorney.””

Then he turned toward Maya.

“Your father also left you a personal letter. Would you like to read it?””

Maya nodded, tears already gathering in her eyes.

Richard handed her the envelope.

Her fingers trembled as she opened it.

Inside was a single sheet of paper, folded neatly in half.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

My beautiful Maya,

If you are reading this, then you have reached a moment when you must decide whether to keep waiting for someone else's permission to become who you are.

I hope you have already learned that talent is not a gift that someone else can take away. It is a responsibility. You must nurture it, protect it, and use it to build something meaningful.

There may be people who love you only when you are small enough to control. Do not confuse their approval with love.

Your wings will never be mine to give you, because they have always belonged to you.

Fly anyway.

Love, Dad.

Maya pressed the letter against her chest.

A sob escaped her before she could stop it.

For two years, she had carried the weight of believing that her father had left her alone in a house where she was barely tolerated.

Now she understood.

He hadn't abandoned her.

He had prepared a way forward, trusting her to discover it when she was strong enough to claim it.

Richard waited until she had composed herself.

“There is one more matter,” he said.

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“No. Absolutely not.””

Richard looked at her.

“I haven't said what it is.””

“You don't need to.””

He removed several photocopies from the folder.

“These are records of withdrawals and transfers made from the trust's administrative account over the past eighteen months. Some transactions appear to have been authorized using credentials associated with your household.””

Maya's tears stopped.

“What does that mean?””

“It means an independent forensic accountant will need to determine whether any of your father's funds were improperly transferred.””

Vanessa backed away from the table.

“This is a witch hunt!””

Richard's expression remained calm.

“Then the records should clear your name.””

Chloe stared at her mother.

“Mom, did you take Maya's money?””

Vanessa rounded on her.

“Don't you dare question me in front of these people!””

Chloe flinched.

The reaction was so familiar that Maya felt something twist inside her chest. She had seen that expression on Chloe's face countless times growing up: the fear of displeasing Vanessa, the instinct to apologize before being accused.

But tonight, Chloe didn't lower her eyes.

“You told me Maya had nothing,” she said.

“You told me she was living here because you were being generous.””

“I was generous!””

“Then why did you take her money?””

Vanessa grabbed Chloe's arm.

“You ungrateful little girl!””

“Let go of me!””

Chloe pulled free.

The movement sent Vanessa's purse tumbling to the floor. A lipstick, a compact mirror, and a small silver key scattered across the carpet.

Maya recognized the key immediately.

It belonged to the old workshop.

The workshop Daniel had supposedly sold before his death.

She stared at it.

“Why do you have that?””

Vanessa quickly bent to retrieve it.

“It's none of your business.””

Richard stepped between them.

“Mrs. Sterling, I suggest you leave the key where it is.””

Vanessa froze.

Security officers approached from either side of the stage.

The head judge looked deeply troubled.

“Mr. Bennett, are we still able to complete the competition?””

Richard glanced at Maya.

“That depends on Maya. Her father intended for her to pursue her own future, not spend her life fighting his widow.””

Maya looked at the crown waiting on its velvet cushion.

Then she looked at Vanessa, who was standing beneath the ballroom lights with her perfect red gown and carefully arranged hair.

For years, Maya had imagined defeating her stepmother.

She had imagined Vanessa apologizing, admitting she was wrong, and finally treating her like family.

But standing there now, Maya realized that none of those things would give her back the years she had lost.

She didn't need Vanessa's confession to know the truth.

She needed the freedom to leave.

Maya turned to Richard.

“I want the trust investigated. Every transaction. Every account.””

Richard nodded.

“I'll arrange it.””

“And I want my workshop returned to me.””

“If the records confirm your ownership, it will be.””

Maya looked directly at Vanessa.

“You said I had nothing.””

Vanessa's lips parted.

Maya continued.

“You made me feel like I was a guest in my own life. You told me I owed you for every meal, every room, every opportunity. You made me believe that asking for something I had earned was selfish.””

Her voice trembled, but she didn't stop.

“I spent years trying to become the kind of daughter you might finally respect.””

She glanced at Chloe.

“And I spent years pretending I didn't see what you were doing to her, because I was too busy trying to survive you.””

Chloe's eyes filled with tears.

Vanessa shook her head.

“You're making a terrible mistake, Maya. You have no idea how cruel the world can be without me protecting you.””

Maya smiled sadly.

“No, Vanessa. I think I finally understand how cruel the world can be when someone convinces you they're the only person who can protect you.””

Then she turned away.

The audience remained silent.

Richard gently touched her shoulder.

“Your father would be proud.””

Maya wiped her cheeks.

“I hope so.””

The announcer cleared his throat.

“Ladies and gentlemen, we apologize for the interruption. The judges have completed their evaluation, and the results remain valid. We are ready to announce the Halloween Queen.””

Maya returned to the center of the stage.

The golden envelope lay open on the table.

The head judge stood.

“Tonight, we witnessed extraordinary craftsmanship, elegance, and originality. But we also witnessed something that cannot be taught in any design school: the ability to transform adversity into art.””

He turned toward Maya.

“Our winner is Maya Sterling, for her original creation, The Fallen Star!”

The ballroom erupted.

Maya stood frozen as applause thundered around her.

Then Evelyn Hart approached with the crown.

It was black and gold, decorated with tiny crystal stars.

“Maya,” Evelyn said, smiling, “you earned this.””

She placed the crown on Maya's head.

Maya closed her eyes.

For a moment, she could almost hear her father's voice.

Fly anyway.

But as the audience rose to its feet, a security officer hurried onto the stage and whispered something to Richard Bennett.

The attorney's smile vanished.

He turned toward Maya.

“There's a problem,” he said quietly.

Maya's heart sank.

“What kind of problem?””

May you like

Richard glanced at Vanessa, who had suddenly stopped struggling against the security officers.

“Your father's workshop may not be the only thing she took.””
