Chapter 3: The Golden Envelope
Backstage, Maya sat before a tall mirror surrounded by warm bulbs.
A makeup artist dabbed a small amount of powder beneath her eyes, trying to hide the redness caused by the intense stage lights.
Maya barely noticed.
She was staring at the damaged wing resting across her lap.
One of the lower feathers had torn loose, leaving a small gap in the carefully arranged layers. The black thread was still tangled around its metal support.
Rebecca, the backstage coordinator, crouched beside her.
“Let me see that.””
Maya handed her the feather.
Rebecca examined the thread, then looked toward the entrance.
“That's not part of your costume.””
“I know.””
“Someone attached it to the runway.””
Maya nodded.
Rebecca's expression tightened.
“Do you know who?””
Maya didn't answer immediately.
She could still hear Chloe's voice.
She was supposed to fall.
It would have been easy to storm into the ballroom and accuse her stepmother in front of everyone.
But Maya had learned that Vanessa could turn almost any situation around. She could cry on command, twist words until they became weapons, and make Maya appear unreasonable even when the truth was standing directly in front of her.
Maya wanted something stronger than another argument.
“I think the security cameras might know,” she said.
Rebecca rose.
“Stay here. I'll get the technical director.””
As she left, Maya opened the small black notebook she kept inside her bag.
Her father's handwriting filled the first page.
Never let anyone convince you that your light belongs to them.
She ran her thumb across the words.
For years, Vanessa had treated Maya's talent like an inconvenience. When Maya won a school art competition at seventeen, Vanessa had told relatives the prize money came from a generous teacher. When a local theater asked Maya to design costumes, Vanessa had insisted she couldn't possibly handle a real job. When Maya saved enough money to buy professional sewing equipment, Vanessa had demanded that she contribute to household expenses until the money disappeared.
And every time Maya tried to defend herself, Vanessa reminded her that she was lucky to have a roof over her head.
Maya closed the notebook.
She was tired of being grateful for the bare minimum.
A knock sounded on the door.
Evelyn Hart entered, followed by the technical director, a broad-shouldered man wearing a black suit and an event badge.
“Maya?”” Evelyn asked.
“Yes.””
“I'm Evelyn Hart. I've been judging this competition for twelve years. I've seen extraordinary designs, and I've seen contestants sabotage themselves under pressure.””
She glanced at the damaged wing.
“What happened out there?””
Maya hesitated.
“I believe someone deliberately placed a thread across the runway.””
The technical director held up a clear evidence bag.
Inside was a small metal hook.
“We found this near the aisle,” he said.
“It appears to have been attached to a black thread.””
Maya looked at the hook.
“That's what caught my wing.””
“Did you see who placed it?””
“No. But I saw my stepmother working near that spot before the show.””
Evelyn exchanged a glance with the technical director.
“We'll review the footage,” she said.
“In the meantime, I want you to know that your performance was exceptional. The way you incorporated the accident into the design showed remarkable composure.””
Maya swallowed.
“Thank you.””
Evelyn smiled gently.
“You didn't just recover from a mistake. You created a moment the audience will remember.””
After they left, Maya leaned back in the chair and closed her eyes.
For the first time that evening, she allowed herself to feel the exhaustion.
Her fingers ached. Her shoulders hurt from carrying the wings. Her heart still raced whenever she remembered the thread tightening against the support.
But she had not fallen.
And she would not apologize for surviving.
Across the ballroom, Vanessa was doing everything possible to prevent the truth from emerging.
She found the event manager beside the judges' table.
“I'm sorry to bother you,” she said, placing one manicured hand against her chest.
“I believe there may have been a misunderstanding involving my daughter.””
The manager, Mr. Collins, glanced up from his tablet.
“Which daughter?””
“Maya. She's been under considerable emotional stress. I worry she may have misinterpreted something that happened backstage.””
Mr. Collins frowned.
“Misinterpreted what?””
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“She has always been convinced that people are trying to undermine her. It's been difficult for the family.””
Chloe stood beside her, clutching the torn edge of her white sleeve.
“Mom,” she whispered, “maybe we should just leave.””
Vanessa turned sharply.
“Not now.””
Mr. Collins set down his tablet.
“Mrs. Sterling, are you suggesting the runway incident was imaginary?””
“Not at all. I simply think everyone should be careful before making accusations.””
“That's reasonable,” he replied.
“Which is why we're reviewing the security footage.””
Vanessa's face changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“The security footage?”” she repeated.
“Yes. We have cameras covering the runway and backstage entrance.””
Vanessa forced a laugh.
“Of course. I'm sure everything will be cleared up.””
Mr. Collins studied her.
“Then you won't mind waiting while we review it.””
For the first time, Vanessa had no immediate answer.
Chloe looked at her mother, panic spreading across her face.
“Mom, you said there weren't any cameras near the aisle.””
Vanessa grabbed her daughter's wrist so quickly that Chloe winced.
“I said nothing of the sort.””
“You told me—”
“Enough.””
Mr. Collins looked between them.
“Is there something I should know?””
Vanessa released Chloe and straightened her gown.
“My daughter is exhausted. The entire evening has been stressful.””
“Then perhaps you should sit down,” he replied.
Vanessa walked away without answering.
Chloe followed, her eyes filling with tears.
They reached a secluded corner near the ballroom's emergency exit.
“Mom, what are we going to do?”” Chloe demanded.
“If they see the footage, they'll know everything.””
Vanessa pulled out her phone.
“Then we make sure the footage never becomes a problem.””
Chloe stared at her.
“You can't be serious.””
“Do you have any idea what it would mean if I were publicly accused of sabotaging Maya? People would destroy me. Your father spent years building this family name.””
“My father is dead,” Chloe snapped.
“And Maya is still his daughter.””
Vanessa went still.
The words seemed to strike something deep inside her.
Then she leaned toward Chloe.
“Be very careful.””
Chloe's eyes filled with tears.
“You told me Maya didn't deserve anything because her father left her behind. But she made those wings herself. She worked every night, and you destroyed her materials. You told me she was selfish for wanting one thing that belonged to her.””
Vanessa's expression hardened.
“Everything I did was for you.””
“No,” Chloe whispered.
“It was for you.””
Vanessa raised her hand.
For a moment, Chloe flinched, expecting a slap.
But Vanessa lowered it slowly.
“You have no idea what I've sacrificed to give you the life you have.””
Chloe shook her head.
“I don't want this life if I have to hurt someone to keep it.””
Vanessa stared at her daughter as if she had become a stranger.
Then her phone buzzed.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
*Security has the footage. Do not approach the control room.*
Vanessa's fingers went numb.
She looked toward the technical booth above the stage.
A security officer stood at the entrance.
Another was speaking to the event manager.
And Evelyn Hart was walking toward the judges' table with a serious expression.
Vanessa turned to Chloe.
“Listen to me carefully. If anyone asks, you saw nothing.””
Chloe pulled her arm away.
“I won't lie for you.””
Vanessa's mouth tightened.
“Then you will lose everything.””
Chloe looked toward the stage, where Maya had just reappeared in a simple black robe, her damaged wings carefully secured behind her.
“No,” Chloe whispered.
“Maybe I'll finally stop losing myself.””
Vanessa stared at her.
Then the ballroom lights dimmed.
The announcer returned to the stage.
“Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for your patience. The judges have completed their deliberations.””
The crowd quieted.
Maya stood beside the backstage curtain, her hands folded in front of her.
Evelyn Hart approached her one final time.
“Maya, regardless of the result tonight, I want you to know that several designers have already asked about your work.””
Maya blinked.
“They have?””
“Yes. One of them runs a major costume studio in New York. She watched your entire performance.””
Maya felt a strange warmth spread through her chest.
“That's incredible.””
Evelyn smiled.
“And there's something else. The judges reviewed the incident. We have reason to believe the damage to your wing was deliberate.””
Maya's smile faded.
“Do you know who did it?””
“Not yet. The security team is verifying the footage before making any public statement.””
Maya nodded.
“Thank you for taking it seriously.””
Evelyn touched her arm.
“You earned that stage, Maya. Don't let anyone convince you otherwise.””
Then she returned to the judges' table.
The announcer lifted a large golden envelope.
“Tonight, one contestant will receive the Halloween Queen crown, a professional modeling contract, and a design fellowship worth fifty thousand dollars.””
The crowd erupted in applause.
Maya's breath caught.
Fifty thousand dollars.
Enough to rent a small studio. Buy professional equipment. Build a business that belonged to her.
Enough to leave Vanessa's house for good.
The announcer continued.
“Our judges faced an extraordinarily difficult decision. Both finalists demonstrated remarkable creativity, but one performance stood out for its originality, craftsmanship, and unforgettable stage presence.””
Vanessa clasped her hands tightly.
Chloe stared at the floor.
Maya looked at the golden envelope.
She had dreamed about this moment for months. She had imagined hearing her name, lifting the crown, and calling her father to tell him she had done it.
Then she remembered he would never answer.
For one brief second, her confidence cracked.
What if she lost?
What if the judges valued Chloe's polished presentation over Maya's handmade wings? What if all her work, all her sacrifices, and all her courage still weren't enough?
Then she remembered the feather floating beneath the spotlight.
She remembered standing on one knee while hundreds of people watched.
She remembered refusing to fall.
Maybe winning wasn't the only way to prove she belonged.
The announcer opened the envelope.
Vanessa leaned forward.
Chloe clasped her hands over her mouth.
The entire ballroom fell silent.
The announcer unfolded the card and stared at it.
Then his expression changed.
He looked toward Maya.
And instead of announcing the winner immediately, he turned toward the technical booth.
“Before we reveal the Halloween Queen,” he said, “the judges have requested that we address an incident that occurred during the final runway presentation.””
A ripple of confusion moved through the audience.
Vanessa rose from her chair.
“This is ridiculous,” she called.
“The competition is over. Just announce the winner!””
Mr. Collins stepped into the aisle.
“Mrs. Sterling, please remain seated.””
“You cannot silence me!””
“I am not silencing you. I'm asking you to respect the proceedings.””
Vanessa pointed toward Maya.
“She has been manipulating everyone since she arrived!””
Maya stood perfectly still.
“I haven't said a word about you,” she replied.
“Because you know what you've done!””
The audience began whispering.
Evelyn Hart rose from the judges' table.
“Mrs. Sterling, we have reviewed the relevant footage. I strongly recommend that you stop speaking before you make this situation worse.””
Vanessa's face drained of color.
Chloe slowly turned toward her mother.
“Mom,” she whispered.
“Please.””
The announcer held the golden envelope in one hand and a second sheet of paper in the other.
“We have two announcements tonight. First, the winner of the Halloween Queen competition.””
He paused.
Maya could hear her own heartbeat.
“Second, the identity of the person responsible for the deliberate interference with a contestant's costume.””
A security officer stepped onto the stage carrying a tablet.
Vanessa took a step backward.
The announcer looked down at the card.
Then he raised his eyes.
“The Halloween Queen is…”
He stopped as the security officer whispered something in his ear.
The announcer's expression turned grave.
“I'm sorry,” he said into the microphone.
“We need to show the audience something first.””
The giant screen behind the judges flickered.
A video appeared.
It showed the empty runway before the competition.
Then a woman in a blood-red gown entered from the left side.
She knelt beside the carpet.
And carefully attached a thin black thread to the edge of the runway.
The ballroom erupted in gasps.
Vanessa stopped breathing.
On the screen, the woman stood, adjusted her gown, and looked directly toward the camera.
Her face was unmistakable.
It was Vanessa.
But the video didn't end there.
The image shifted to a second camera angle, revealing Chloe standing nearby, holding a small metal hook.
The audience fell silent.
Chloe covered her mouth with both hands.
Vanessa looked toward the exit.
A security officer moved to block her path.
Then Evelyn Hart stepped toward the microphone.
“The judges have reached a decision,” she announced.
“And in light of what we've just witnessed, we will not allow tonight's winner to be determined by intimidation, manipulation, or sabotage.””
She turned toward Maya.
“Maya Sterling, please come to the stage.””
Maya walked forward, her black wings rising behind her like a shadow.
The golden envelope remained unopened in the announcer's hand.
And as Maya reached the first step, Vanessa shouted the words that made every person in the ballroom turn.
“You can't give her that crown! Daniel's will says she doesn't even own the wings she's wearing!””
Maya froze.
Evelyn's expression changed.
The announcer lowered the envelope.
May you like
And somewhere near the back of the ballroom, an older man in a gray suit stood up, clutching a leather folder against his chest.
“I believe,” he said quietly, “it's time everyone heard what Daniel Sterling actually left his daughter.””
