Chapter 9: The Woman Who Never Died
For several seconds, nobody moved.
I could hear the refrigerator humming in the kitchen.
A police siren faded somewhere in the distance.
My father stood in the center of the room, still holding the phone.
I stared at him.
“Say that again.””
He looked at me.
“I don't know what to believe.””
“You said she survived.””
“The caller said she survived.””
“You believed him.””
“I don't know.””
I stepped closer.
“Dad.””
He closed his eyes.
“Jordan, your mother died eleven years ago.””
“But you just said—”
“I know what I said.””
Maya stood beside me.
“Dad, who was the caller?””
He looked at her.
“I don't know.””
Ryan suddenly sat down.
His face had gone gray.
My father turned toward him.
“You know something.””
Ryan shook his head.
“No.””
“You've known this entire time.””
“No.””
“You told us Jordan's mother was investigating you.””
Ryan wiped his mouth.
“She was.””
“And now someone says she's alive.””
“I don't know anything about that.””
Claire suddenly whispered,
“She is.””
My father turned.
“What?””
Claire was staring at the floor.
“She is alive.””
The room exploded.
My father crossed the room in two strides.
“Where?””
Claire backed away.
“Marcus…”
“WHERE?””
“I don't know where she is now.””
“How long have you known?””
“Years.””
My father looked as if he'd been struck.
“How many?””
“Eight.””
My stomach twisted.
“Eight years?””
Claire nodded.
I stared at her.
“You knew my mother was alive for eight years?””
“I didn't know she was alive at first.””
“When did you find out?””
“Three years after the accident.””
My father gripped the back of a chair.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because she asked me not to.””
“Why?””
“Because she said you were in danger.””
My father laughed once.
A broken sound.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“She gave me proof.””
“What proof?””
Claire walked toward the stairs.
“I need the old phone.””
“What old phone?””
“The one your mother left.””
My father stared at her.
“Where is it?””
“In Maya's room.””
Maya looked confused.
“Mine?””
Claire nodded.
“I hid it there years ago.””
Maya ran upstairs.
I followed.
She opened her closet and pulled down a small storage box.
Inside were old photographs, childhood drawings, and a dusty black phone.
Maya handed it to me.
I stared at it.
“This belonged to Mom?””
Claire nodded from the doorway.
“She gave it to me.””
I pressed the power button.
Nothing happened.
“It's dead.””
“There should be a charger.””
Maya searched the box.
She found one.
We plugged it in.
The screen remained black.
Then, after several seconds, it lit up.
One notification appeared.
*1 NEW VOICEMAIL*
Dated eight years earlier.
My hands shook.
“Dad.””
He came upstairs.
I pressed play.
Static.
Then a woman's voice.
My mother's voice.
I knew it instantly.
I hadn't heard it since I was eleven.
“Marcus, if you're hearing this, something has gone wrong.””
My knees weakened.
My father grabbed the banister.
Her voice continued.
“I need you to listen carefully.””
A pause.
“Do not trust Ryan.””
Ryan's face appeared at the bottom of the stairs.
He stopped breathing.
The recording continued.
“He isn't working alone.””
My father looked at him.
“There's someone inside the company.””
Static crackled.
“Someone you trust.””
My mother took a breath.
“Claire knows about it.””
Claire covered her mouth.
I stared at her.
The recording continued.
“She thinks she's protecting Jordan, but she doesn't understand what they've planned.””
My father whispered,
“No…”
My mother's voice softened.
“If anything happens to me, Jordan's trust must remain untouched.””
I looked at my father.
“What trust?””
He shook his head.
The recording continued.
“Gideon is only the middleman.””
My blood ran cold.
“He has been taking instructions from someone above him.””
A pause.
“I don't know the name yet.””
Then my mother's voice became urgent.
“But I found the connection.””
The recording crackled.
“Marcus, the person behind this is—”
The audio cut out.
Maya stared at the phone.
“That's it?””
I pressed the recording again.
Same ending.
I tried another file.
Nothing.
Another.
Nothing.
Claire whispered,
“There was more.””
I turned toward her.
“How much?””
“Three minutes.””
“Where is it?””
“I don't know.””
My father looked at her.
“You destroyed it.””
“No.””
“Then where?””
“I gave the phone to Ryan.””
Ryan shook his head.
“I never had it.””
Claire stared at him.
“You did.””
“I didn't.””
Maya suddenly spoke.
“Mom.””
Claire looked at her.
“You said the phone was hidden in my room.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I thought nobody would look there.””
Maya frowned.
“Then how did Ryan know about it?””
Claire froze.
I looked at Ryan.
He was staring at the phone.
Not at us.
At the voicemail.
I noticed his hand trembling.
“Ryan.””
He looked up.
“What?””
“You know who she's talking about.””
“No.””
“You do.””
“No.””
My father stepped toward him.
“Ryan.””
Ryan's eyes filled with tears.
“I didn't know she was alive.””
“That isn't what I asked.””
Ryan looked at me.
Then finally said,
“She was right.””
My heart pounded.
“About what?””
“You were never the target.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“Your father was.””
My father stared at him.
“Then why use Jordan?””
“Because they couldn't reach you directly.””
“Who couldn't?””
Ryan looked toward Claire.
She whispered,
“His business partner.””
My father went still.
“My business partner?””
Ryan nodded.
“The one who helped you build the company.””
My father shook his head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“That's impossible.””
Ryan's voice broke.
“He's been taking money for years.””
My father backed away.
“Who?””
Ryan said the name.
“Daniel Mercer.””
My father's face changed.
I knew that name.
Everyone did.
Daniel Mercer was my father's closest business partner.
He had been at my childhood birthday parties.
He'd taken me to baseball games.
He'd helped pay for my college books.
He'd been the man my father trusted more than anyone.
Maya whispered,
“That's why Mom was investigating.””
Ryan nodded.
“She found out Daniel had been moving company money into shell accounts.””
My father stared at the wall.
“Why would he need Jordan's information?””
Ryan looked at me.
“Because your father's will.””
I frowned.
“What about it?””
Ryan answered,
“Your father named you as the controlling beneficiary.””
My father looked at me.
“I did.””
I stared at him.
“When?””
“Years ago.””
“How much?””
He hesitated.
“Enough.””
Ryan said quietly,
“Enough to destroy Daniel if Marcus died.””
My blood ran cold.
“So they needed me?””
“They needed control of you.””
My father finally understood.
“They've been building a case.””
Ryan nodded.
“Exactly.””
“The assault accusation.””
“Part of it.””
“The fake account.””
“Part of it.””
“The photographs.””
“Part of it.””
My father stared at me.
“They wanted me to look unstable.””
Ryan nodded.
“And Jordan to look criminal.””
Claire began crying.
“I didn't know all of that.””
My father turned toward her.
“You knew enough.””
“I was trying to protect Jordan.””
“You accused him.””
“I panicked.””
Maya stepped between them.
“Mom, stop saying you protected him.””
Claire looked at her daughter.
“You didn't.””
Maya's voice shook.
“You made him feel like he was guilty for being alive.””
Claire broke down.
“I know.””
“No.””
Maya wiped her tears.
“You don't.””
I looked at the phone again.
The voicemail was the key.
My mother had discovered the person behind everything.
Daniel.
But the recording had cut out before she said his name.
We needed the missing three minutes.
Then I remembered the folder.
The old documents.
The photograph.
The handwritten notes.
I ran downstairs.
I opened the black folder again.
Behind the photographs was a thin plastic sleeve.
Inside was a receipt.
*Digital Transfer — Audio Archive*
Date: eight years earlier.
I stared at it.
There was a handwritten note beneath it.
*Backup sent before meeting.*
I looked at Claire.
“Where did she go that night?””
Claire's face went white.
“Jordan…”
“Where?””
“I don't know.””
Ryan whispered,
“I do.””
Everyone turned.
“She was meeting Daniel.””
My father stepped forward.
“Where?””
Ryan swallowed.
“The old courthouse.””
I grabbed my jacket.
My father stopped me.
“You're not going anywhere.””
“My mother may be alive.””
“We don't know that.””
“But someone does.””
My phone buzzed.
A new message.
This time, there was an audio file.
No number.
No name.
Just one line:
*You wanted the rest of the recording.*
I pressed play.
My mother's voice filled the room.
“Marcus, if you're hearing this, I didn't die.””
My father covered his mouth.
The recording continued.
“I disappeared because Daniel found out I knew the truth.””
I looked at my father.
My mother's voice trembled.
“He told me that if I stayed, Jordan would be next.””
I couldn't breathe.
“So I made a choice.””
A long silence.
“I'm sorry, Jordan.””
My eyes filled with tears.
“I left to keep you alive.””
Then came the words that shattered everything I'd believed for eleven years.
“I have been watching you from a distance.””
The recording crackled.
“I know where you go to school.””
I froze.
“I know about your roommate.””
My father grabbed my shoulder.
My mother's voice continued.
“And I know that the people who came after me have finally found you.””
The audio stopped.
Then another file appeared.
*PLAY ME ALONE.*
My father reached for the phone.
I pulled it away.
“Wait.””
The screen displayed a final message.
*Jordan, if you are hearing this, trust no one in that house.*
I looked around.
My father.
Maya.
Claire.
Ryan.
Then the phone buzzed one last time.
A photograph appeared.
It showed my mother.
Older.
Alive.
Standing outside a small roadside motel.
And beside her stood a man I recognized immediately.
Daniel Mercer.
But Daniel wasn't looking at the camera.
He was looking directly at the person taking the photograph.
The timestamp was from *yesterday*.
My father stared at the image.
Then he whispered,
“She's been alive this whole time.””
And behind us, Claire suddenly screamed.
“NO!””
We turned.
She was staring at the photograph.
Not at my mother.
At Daniel.
Because beneath his face was a second person.
Someone standing half-hidden in the motel doorway.
Someone none of us had expected to see.
Maya whispered,
“Mom…”
Claire's face turned completely white.
“That isn't Daniel's partner.””
She looked at me.
“That's the man who killed your mother.””
My father's voice cracked.
“Who?””
Claire pointed at the photograph.
May you like
Then she said his name.
And I realized we'd been searching for the wrong villain all along.
