Chapter 4: The Man at the Door

Nobody breathed.

Ryan's voice came through the front door again.

“Marcus, open the door.””

My father didn't move.

Maya's fingers tightened around his sleeve.

“Dad, please.””

He looked at her.

“What is he going to do?””

“I don't know.””

Claire suddenly whispered, “Don't open it.””

My father turned toward her.

“You've been telling me not to do a lot of things tonight.””

She lowered her eyes.

“Marcus, I'm serious.””

“So am I.””

He walked toward the door.

I followed.

Maya stayed behind us.

My father unlocked the deadbolt but didn't open it.

“Ryan.””

“Yeah?””

“Why are you here?””

A pause.

“Because you deserve the whole story.””

My father looked through the peephole.

Ryan stood on the porch with both hands visible.

No weapon.

No bag.

Just a pale face and a dark jacket.

My father opened the door halfway.

Ryan looked past him.

His eyes landed on me.

Then Maya.

Then Claire.

He immediately understood.

“She told you.””

My father stepped outside and shut the door behind him.

“What did she tell me?””

Ryan swallowed.

“That I took the money.””

“You did.””

“I did.””

The admission was so casual that I felt my stomach turn.

My father stared at him.

“You stole twenty-seven thousand dollars from me.””

Ryan rubbed his forehead.

“Yes.””

“And you threatened Maya.””

“I never wanted to hurt her.””

“You threatened her.””

“I scared her.””

My father stepped closer.

“Why?””

Ryan looked down.

“Because I was desperate.””

“That doesn't answer the question.””

“I owed people money.””

“What people?””

Ryan's jaw tightened.

“People I shouldn't have borrowed from.””

My father stared at him.

“You could have come to me.””

“I was ashamed.””

“So you stole from me?””

“I was going to pay it back.””

“When?””

“I don't know.””

My father's laugh was bitter.

“You don't know?””

Ryan shook his head.

“I made one bad decision after another.””

“Then you made another.””

Ryan looked toward the house.

“I never told Claire to accuse Jordan.””

Claire opened the door.

“Yes, you did.””

Ryan looked at her.

“I told you to scare him.””

“You told me to make Marcus think Jordan was dangerous.””

“I said make it look like something happened.””

“You knew exactly what you were asking me to do.””

Ryan's expression hardened.

“Claire, you were the one who took the money.””

My father looked at his wife.

Claire went still.

Ryan continued.

“You told me where Marcus kept the emergency account.””

My father's voice was barely audible.

“Claire.””

She didn't answer.

“Did you give him access?””

Silence.

Ryan nodded.

“She did.””

Claire turned on him.

“You promised me you'd fix this.””

“I tried.””

“You said nobody would find out.””

“I didn't expect Maya to find the footage.””

My father looked toward the house.

“Maya.””

She stepped onto the porch.

Her face was wet with tears.

Ryan stared at her.

“You shouldn't have done that.””

Maya froze.

My father moved between them.

“Don't talk to her.””

Ryan raised both hands.

“I'm not going to hurt her.””

“You've done enough.””

Maya's voice trembled.

“Why did you tell Mom to blame Jordan?””

Ryan looked at her.

“Because I needed someone people would believe.””

My chest tightened.

“Someone people would believe?””

Ryan nodded.

“You were always the responsible one, Jordan. Good grades. Two jobs.

No trouble. If something went wrong around you, people would assume you finally snapped.””

I stared at him.

“You knew me.””

“That's why it would work.””

My father's face went cold.

“You planned this.””

Ryan didn't answer.

“Answer me.””

“Yes.””

The word landed like a gunshot.

Maya covered her mouth.

Claire began crying.

My father looked at his brother as if he'd become a stranger.

“You planned to destroy my son to cover your theft.””

Ryan's eyes dropped.

“Yes.””

I stepped onto the porch.

“Then why come here?””

Ryan looked at me.

“Because there's something else.””

My father shook his head.

“No more games.””

“This isn't a game.””

Ryan reached into his jacket.

My father immediately stepped forward.

“What are you doing?””

Ryan pulled out his phone.

“I recorded everything.””

He unlocked it.

“Every conversation I had with Claire.””

Claire's face went white.

Ryan held the phone out.

“She knows where the money went.””

My father took it.

He pressed play.

Claire's voice came through the speaker.

“I can't replace it, Ryan.””

Ryan's recorded voice answered.

“Then use Jordan.””

The recording stopped.

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Claire.

“Use me for what?””

She closed her eyes.

Ryan answered.

“To make Marcus think you're unstable.””

My father's head snapped toward him.

“What?””

Ryan continued.

“Claire was going to tell you Jordan had been acting strangely. She wanted you to believe he was dangerous.””

Claire shook her head.

“That wasn't the plan.””

“What was the plan?””

She couldn't answer.

My father stepped closer.

“Claire.””

She whispered, “I didn't want him arrested.””

“Then what did you want?””

“I wanted him gone.””

The words barely left her mouth.

My father stared at her.

“Gone where?””

“Out of the house.””

“Why?””

Claire looked at me.

“Because Ryan told me once Jordan was out, we'd have time to fix everything.””

“Everything?””

“The money. The account. The debts.””

I felt numb.

“You were going to throw me out so you could cover your tracks.””

Claire began crying harder.

“I was scared.””

I shook my head.

“You weren't scared when you threw my clothes onto the concrete.””

She looked away.

“You weren't scared when you broke my phone.””

“I didn't mean—”

“You weren't scared when you called me a liar.””

She said nothing.

My father took a slow breath.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“It's the bank.””

Ryan stiffened.

My father answered.

“Hello?””

He listened.

“What?””

His face went pale.

“Freeze everything.””

A pause.

“Now.””

He hung up.

I stared at him.

“What happened?””

He looked at Claire.

Then Ryan.

“The account is empty.””

Claire covered her mouth.

My father turned toward me.

“And someone transferred the remaining money thirty minutes ago.””

Ryan whispered, “That's impossible.””

My father's phone buzzed.

He looked at the notification.

His eyes widened.

“Jordan.””

“What?””

He turned the screen toward me.

A transaction receipt was displayed.

The money had been transferred to an account in my name.

I stared at it.

“I didn't do that.””

“I know.””

Ryan backed away.

“No.””

My father looked at him.

“What?””

Ryan's face had gone completely white.

“That account…”

He swallowed.

“That account was never supposed to exist.””

My father stared at the screen.

“Why?””

Ryan looked at Claire.

“Because only one person had the information to open it.””

Claire began shaking.

Maya whispered,

“Mom?””

Claire looked at her daughter.

Then at me.

May you like

And finally, she said the words none of us expected.

“I didn't open that account.””
