Chapter 6: The Heir No One Wanted

Armando did not sleep that night.

At two in the morning, he sat alone in his study with Rafael's letter spread across the desk. Outside, rain streaked the windows, turning the city lights into blurred ribbons of gold.

He had read the letter fourteen times.

Each time, he found another reason to distrust Teresa.

Each time, he found another reason to fear what his father had intended to reveal.

At three fifteen, he called David.

"I need every document connected to my father's estate. Wills, trust agreements, property records, correspondence, everything.""

David sounded half asleep.

"All of it, sir?""

"All of it. And I need a discreet attorney who wasn't involved in the original settlement.""

"Is there a problem with the estate?""

Armando looked at the letter.

"There may be a problem with my entire family.""

By seven, David had arrived with two boxes of documents and the contact information for an attorney named Margaret Collins, a specialist in inheritance disputes.

At eight thirty, Margaret joined Armando in the study.

She was in her early sixties, with silver-framed glasses and a habit of reading every page before offering an opinion. She had represented several major estates and had no patience for family members who confused wealth with immunity.

Armando handed her the letter.

"Tell me what this means.""

Margaret read it silently.

Then she placed it on the desk.

"This isn't enough to establish anyone's legal rights, but it gives us a reason to investigate. Do you have the original will?""

"Yes.""

"Any later amendments?""

"Not that I know of.""

She opened the first box.

"Then we'll start there.""

For nearly two hours, they worked through the papers.

There were property deeds, business agreements, tax records, and a series of trust documents bearing Rafael's signature.

Then Margaret stopped.

"Mr. Reyes, look at this.""

She turned a page toward him.

The document was dated eleven years earlier, when Rafael was still alive. It established a private family trust containing several commercial properties, investment accounts, and shares in Reyes Global.

The beneficiary was listed as a minor child.

*Nicolás Alvarez.*

Armando stared at the page.

"That's impossible.""

"Why?""

"My father never mentioned this trust.""

Margaret examined the signature.

"It appears to be his. We'll need an independent verification, but the document is properly witnessed and notarized.""

She turned another page.

The trust's estimated value had been recorded at approximately eight million dollars when it was created.

Armando felt the room tilt.

"Eight million?""

"Possibly more today, depending on the assets and subsequent management.""

"Who was the trustee?""

Margaret scanned the document.

"Your father initially appointed himself. After his death, the successor trustee was to be selected by an independent board.""

"Who selected the successor?""

She looked at the next page.

"Teresa Reyes.""

Armando rose.

"She had no right.""

"That depends on the trust's provisions and the circumstances of the appointment.""

"She concealed the trust from me.""

"That may be significant, but let's not jump ahead. We need the full record.""

Margaret reached into the box and removed another document.

"This one concerns distributions.""

She read it carefully.

"According to this schedule, Nico was entitled to receive payments for medical care, education, housing, and general support. There was also a provision for the trust to transfer control to him when he reached adulthood.""

Armando's face hardened.

"Has he received any of it?""

Margaret checked the account statements.

"Not according to these records.""

"How much has the trust earned over the last eight years?""

"That's what we'll need to establish.""

She closed the folder.

"If the trust has been improperly administered, the consequences could be serious. But we need bank records, tax filings, and the trustee's accounting.""

Armando looked toward the window.

Teresa had spent years telling him that family loyalty meant keeping private matters private. He had believed her.

Now he wondered how many of those private matters had been designed to protect her rather than the family.

At nine thirty, he drove to Nico's apartment.

Elena was sitting upright in bed when he arrived. Her color was better, though she still looked exhausted. Nico sat at the small table, eating oatmeal from a chipped bowl.

He jumped up when Armando entered.

"Mr. Reyes!""

"Good morning, Nico.""

"Did you talk to the doctor?""

"I did. We're arranging an appointment for your mother.""

Nico's face brightened.

"Thank you!""

Armando placed a folder on the table.

"But there's something else we need to discuss.""

Elena's smile faded.

"What is it?""

Armando looked at her carefully.

"Did Rafael establish a trust for Nico?""

Elena closed her eyes.

"I thought Teresa had destroyed the documents.""

"She didn't.""

"Then you know?""

"I know enough to ask questions.""

Nico looked between them.

"What's a trust?""

Armando pulled out a chair.

"It's an arrangement where money or property is held for someone, often until they're old enough to manage it themselves.""

"Like a savings account?""

"Something like that, but it can be much larger.""

Nico considered this.

"Do I have one?""

Armando hesitated.

"It appears that your grandfather created one for you.""

Nico frowned.

"My grandfather?""

Elena began to cry quietly.

Armando looked at her.

"Nico's grandfather was Rafael Reyes?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

The boy stood frozen.

"But my grandfather died before I was born.""

"Yes," Elena whispered.

"Then how could he make me a trust?""

"Because he knew about you.""

Nico's expression changed.

He looked suddenly younger than ten.

"Did he know me?""

Elena reached for him.

"He knew about you, sweetheart. He wanted you to have a future.""

Nico sat beside her.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"I wanted to. But I was afraid.""

"Afraid of what?""

Elena struggled to answer.

Armando pulled the chair closer.

"Your mother was threatened. Someone made her believe that telling the truth would put you in danger.""

Nico's eyes filled with tears.

"Who?""

Armando did not answer immediately.

He did not want to place the weight of an adult betrayal on a child's shoulders.

But Nico deserved honesty.

"My cousin Teresa.""

The boy stared at him.

"The lady who wanted the wallet?""

Armando blinked.

"What?""

Nico reached into his shoeshine bag and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

"I found this when I was looking for your address. It was stuck inside the wallet.""

Armando took the paper.

It was a small receipt from a private security company, dated that morning. Someone had slipped it into his wallet without his noticing.

The printed note read:

*Subject: Nicolás Alvarez. Maintain surveillance. Confirm location of Elena Alvarez. Report all contact with Armando Reyes.*

At the bottom was a handwritten instruction.

*Do not allow the boy to speak publicly about the estate.*

Armando's blood ran cold.

He looked at Nico.

"Did you show this to anyone?""

"No, sir.""

"Did anyone follow you today?""

Nico nodded.

"There was a black car near the bus stop yesterday. I saw it again outside the building last night.""

Elena covered her mouth.

Armando immediately called David.

"Send security to Elena's apartment. Quietly. I want the investigator's identity, the company records, and every payment Teresa has made to them.""

He ended the call and turned toward Nico.

"Listen to me. Nobody is going to take you away from your mother. I won't allow it.""

Nico swallowed.

"Why does she hate us?""

Armando looked at the boy's frightened face.

"I don't know yet.""

But he was beginning to understand.

Teresa had not merely hidden a trust. She had hidden a child who stood to inherit a fortune, and she had spent years making sure that child remained invisible.

If the trust was legitimate, her motives were no longer difficult to guess.

Armando reached for his phone again.

This time, he called Teresa directly.

She answered on the second ring.

"Armando. I assume you've had an interesting morning.""

"Did you establish a trust for Nico's benefit?""

Silence.

Then Teresa laughed.

"So you've found the paperwork.""

"You knew about it.""

"Of course I knew about it.""

"Where is the money?""

"That's an interesting question.""

"Answer me.""

"Your father was not always the wise man you remember. He made promises to people without thinking about the consequences.""

"Eight million dollars is not a casual promise.""

"Nor is a child's existence a reason to dismantle an entire family.""

Armando's voice dropped.

"Did you divert the trust's assets?""

Teresa sighed.

"You always did enjoy dramatic accusations.""

"Then prove me wrong. Give the attorney the complete accounting.""

"I don't answer to your attorney.""

"If the trust was properly administered, you have nothing to fear.""

"And if I refuse?""

"Then we'll obtain the records through the courts.""

Teresa's voice hardened.

"You think this is about Nico? You think you've discovered a poor little boy who deserves a fortune?""

"I think he deserves whatever my father legally left him.""

"Your father left you a company, Armando. He left you a responsibility. He never intended for some child born outside the family to take what belongs to you.""

Armando felt a wave of disgust.

"So that's what this is about.""

"Don't pretend you're above it. You've spent your life protecting the Reyes name.""

"Not by stealing from a child.""

Teresa's voice dropped to a whisper.

"Be very careful. If you open this case, you'll discover things about your father that you may wish had stayed buried.""

Armando ended the call.

For several seconds, he stared at the phone.

Then he turned to Margaret, who had arrived with a second set of documents.

"Can she be removed as trustee?""

"If we establish misconduct, potentially. We can also petition the court to appoint an independent trustee and freeze disputed assets while the accounting is reviewed.""

"Then do it.""

Margaret nodded.

"I'll begin preparing the necessary filings.""

Nico looked up from the table.

"Mr. Reyes?""

"Yes?""

"Does this mean my mother won't have to worry about medicine anymore?""

Armando knelt beside him.

"We're going to make sure she gets the care she needs.""

"And the money?""

"If the trust is yours, we'll make sure it's protected.""

Nico was quiet for a moment.

Then he asked the question that broke Armando's heart.

"Will we still have to move out of our apartment?""

Armando looked around the tiny room, at the unpaid bills, the old furniture, and the medicine bottles lined up beside the bed.

"No, son. Not because of this.""

Nico nodded slowly.

He didn't celebrate.

He didn't ask how rich he might become.

He simply returned to his oatmeal, as though the most important thing in the world was making sure his mother could finish hers.

Armando stood.

His phone buzzed with a message from Margaret.

She had just received the first bank statement associated with the trust.

He opened it.

Then he read the amount twice.

Of the original eight million dollars, only a fraction remained.

Millions had been transferred to accounts associated with a company owned by Teresa.

And the last transaction, dated just three days earlier, carried a reference that made Armando's stomach turn.

*FINAL DISTRIBUTION — PENDING APPROVAL.*

Beneath it was a handwritten note.

*Once the child is declared legally ineligible, release the remaining assets.*

Armando looked up at Nico.

The boy who had returned ten thousand dollars because it wasn't his had unknowingly spent his entire childhood being robbed of a fortune that was.

And Teresa was preparing to take the last of it.

Armando slipped the statement into his folder.

May you like

This time, he would not wait for the truth to find its way to him.

He would bring it into the light himself.
