Chapter 5: The Woman Who Knew His Father

Armando stepped between the door and Nico.

"Nobody is taking this child anywhere," he said.

The handle stopped moving.

A moment later, a man in a gray suit appeared in the doorway. He was tall, clean-shaven, and carried a leather folder beneath one arm.

Armando recognized him from the photograph David had sent earlier.

The private investigator.

"Mr. Reyes," the man said, straightening his tie.

"I didn't expect to find you here.""

"That makes two of us.""

The investigator glanced toward Elena.

"My name is Victor Hale. I'm conducting an inquiry into a matter involving this woman.""

"At whose request?""

Victor hesitated.

"Your cousin, Teresa.""

Armando's expression hardened.

"Get out.""

"Sir, you should hear what I have to say.""

"I said get out.""

Victor opened his folder.

"Your father left behind documents that may have been improperly withheld from the estate. Ms. Alvarez worked in your family's household at the time. She may have information relevant to the case.""

Elena clutched the blanket.

"I told you I have nothing.""

Victor looked at her.

"You have a great deal, Mrs. Alvarez. You simply haven't been willing to admit it.""

Nico moved closer to his mother.

"Leave her alone!""

Victor glanced down at him.

"Young man, this is an adult matter.""

"She's my mother.""

"And I have a job to do.""

Armando took one step forward.

"Your job is over. Leave before I call the police.""

Victor closed the folder.

"Of course, sir.""

He turned toward the door, but stopped before stepping into the corridor.

"One last thing. Teresa asked me to remind you that your father's estate contains a provision that has never been fully resolved.""

Armando's eyes narrowed.

"What provision?""

Victor gave him a thin smile.

"Ask Elena.""

Then he walked away.

The door closed.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Nico turned toward his mother.

"Mama, what does he mean? What happened fifteen years ago?""

Elena closed her eyes.

Armando waited.

He could see the struggle in her face. Whatever she had carried for years, she had never intended to share it with him.

Finally, she pushed the blanket aside and reached for the photograph on the table.

It showed her standing beside a younger version of Armando's father, Rafael Reyes, outside a large white house.

Rafael had one arm around her shoulders.

In his other hand, he held a little boy.

Armando stared at the picture.

"Where was this taken?""

"At the old Reyes estate," Elena said.

"Why were you standing with my father like that?""

She looked at Nico.

"Because he was helping me.""

"Helping you with what?""

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

"Your father saved my life.""

Armando sat down slowly.

He remembered Rafael as a stern but generous man who believed that money created responsibilities. His father had funded scholarships, helped struggling employees, and quietly paid hospital bills for people who could never repay him.

But he had also been secretive.

There were parts of Rafael's life that Armando had never understood.

"What happened?"" he asked.

Elena drew a trembling breath.

"Fifteen years ago, I was working at the estate as a housekeeper. My husband had died in an accident, and I had a little boy. I was behind on rent, and the hospital was threatening to stop treatment for my child.""

She swallowed.

"I asked the estate manager for an advance on my wages. He refused. I thought I would lose everything.""

Armando listened without interrupting.

"Your father found me crying in the laundry room. He asked what was wrong. I told him the truth.""

"And he helped you?""

"He paid the hospital directly. He arranged for me to keep my job, and he made sure I had somewhere safe to live.""

Elena looked down at the photograph.

"He told me that no mother should have to choose between feeding her child and keeping him alive.""

Armando felt his chest tighten.

That sounded exactly like Rafael.

"But why did Victor say you had information about the estate?""

Elena's hands began to shake.

"Because your father asked me to keep something safe.""

"What?""

"A sealed envelope.""

Armando leaned forward.

"Where is it?""

"I don't know anymore.""

"How can you not know?""

"Because I gave it back.""

"To whom?""

Elena stared at him.

"To Teresa.""

Armando went completely still.

For a moment, the only sound in the apartment was the hum of the old refrigerator.

"Why would you give my father's documents to Teresa?""

"Because she told me your father had asked her to collect them.""

"Did you see him tell her that?""

"No.""

"Did you speak to him afterward?""

Elena shook her head.

"Your father died before I could ask him.""

Armando stood so abruptly that the chair scraped against the floor.

"Then Teresa has been hiding documents from my family for fifteen years?""

"I don't know what was inside the envelope," Elena said.

"I never opened it.""

"Why didn't you tell anyone?""

"Because Teresa threatened to have me arrested for stealing from the estate.""

Armando stared at her.

"Did you steal anything?""

"No!""

Her voice rose with a sudden force that startled Nico.

"I never took anything that wasn't mine. I worked for your family for six years. I cleaned your rooms, cooked your meals, and cared for your father when he was ill. I loved him like a member of my own family.""

She covered her mouth.

"I'm sorry.""

Armando's anger began to shift.

Not disappear.

Shift.

He could see the fear that had kept Elena silent. He could see the shame she had carried even though she had done nothing wrong.

He had spent years trusting Teresa because she was family.

He had never considered that the people who worked for his father might have known him better than the relatives who inherited his money.

"Nico," Elena whispered, "please take Mrs. Flores into the kitchen for a moment.""

The boy hesitated.

"Mama?""

"Please, sweetheart.""

Nico followed Mrs. Flores into the adjoining room, leaving the door partly open.

Elena waited until they were out of sight.

"There is something else you should know.""

Armando returned to his chair.

"Go on.""

"Your father didn't just help me because I was a struggling employee. He knew something about my family.""

"What?""

Elena looked at him with frightened eyes.

"He told me that my son might one day need to know who his real father was.""

Armando stared at her.

"Your husband was dead. Are you saying Rafael was involved with you?""

"No."" Elena shook her head sharply.

"No, Mr. Reyes. Rafael was a good man. He never dishonored his marriage.""

"Then who was your son's father?""

Elena's lips trembled.

"I don't know what he knew. He never told me everything.""

"Elena, I need a straight answer.""

She looked toward the kitchen, where Nico was helping Mrs. Flores carry the plates.

Then she reached beneath her pillow and pulled out a small envelope.

The paper had yellowed with age. The edges were worn, and a faint red seal remained across the flap.

"I kept this because I was afraid Teresa would come back for it," Elena said.

Armando took it carefully.

On the front, in his father's unmistakable handwriting, were six words.

*For Armando, when the time is right.*

His fingers went cold.

"Why didn't you give this to me?""

"Because Teresa told me the letter would destroy your family.""

Armando turned the envelope over.

The seal had been broken and carefully pressed back into place.

Someone had already read it.

He looked at Elena.

"Did you?""

"No. I swear.""

He slipped a finger beneath the flap and removed a single folded sheet.

The handwriting was faint, but unmistakable.

My son, if you are reading this, then the truth has remained hidden longer than I intended. There is a reason I asked Elena to protect these documents. It concerns the future of our family, the company, and a child who deserves to know the truth.

Armando stopped reading.

His eyes moved to the next line.

The boy is not the person Teresa believes him to be.

He looked up.

"Elena, what does this mean?""

She began to cry.

"I was hoping I would never have to tell you.""

Armando gripped the letter.

"Tell me what?""

Elena looked toward the kitchen again.

Then she whispered the words that made the room feel suddenly airless.

"Your father believed Nico was the rightful heir to a part of the Reyes fortune.""

Armando's mouth fell open.

"My father died eight years ago. Nico is ten. The dates don't—"

"He knew Nico's mother before he knew me," Elena said quietly.

"He knew things about the family that I didn't understand. He told me that if anything happened to him, I had to protect my son until the time came to tell the truth.""

Armando looked at the photograph.

The little boy in Rafael's arms.

The resemblance was subtle, but now that he knew what to look for, he could see it.

The same dark eyes.

The same shape of the mouth.

The same small crease between the eyebrows.

Armando looked toward the kitchen door.

Nico was laughing softly at something Mrs. Flores had said.

Ten years old.

Poor.

Hungry.

And possibly connected to the very fortune Armando had used to test his honesty.

Before Armando could ask another question, his phone rang.

Teresa's name flashed across the screen.

He answered.

"What did you do?"" he demanded.

Her voice was icy.

"I should be asking you that, Armando. You have no right to interfere with my investigation.""

"Your investigator threatened a sick woman.""

"That woman stole from our family.""

"She says you took my father's documents.""

Teresa fell silent.

Then she laughed softly.

"Be careful, cousin. You don't know what you're getting yourself into.""

"I know enough to demand answers.""

"No. You know what a frightened woman has told you. That's very different.""

"Then explain the letter.""

The silence on the other end lasted too long.

When Teresa finally spoke, her voice had lost its warmth.

"If you've read that letter, then you have made a terrible mistake.""

Armando tightened his grip on the phone.

"Why?""

"Because Rafael wasn't protecting Nico.""

She paused.

"He was protecting you from what Nico's existence would mean.""

The call ended.

Armando stood motionless, staring at the dead screen.

Behind him, Elena whispered a prayer.

May you like

And in the kitchen, Nico was asking Mrs. Flores whether his mother might finally be able to afford her medicine.

Neither of them knew that the money Nico had returned was only the beginning of a family secret worth millions.
