Chapter 5: The Woman at the Front Door
When Darius pulled into the mansion's driveway, Brittany's silver SUV was parked beside the front steps.
He slammed the car door and hurried inside.
The first thing he heard was Kayla crying.
The second was Brittany's voice.
“I'm trying to explain that this is for your own good!””
Darius rushed into the living room.
Brittany stood beside the fireplace holding a leather folder. Evelyn was positioned between her and the staircase, while Kayla sat on the bottom step in her pink star-covered hat.
The moment Kayla saw her father, she ran to him.
“Daddy!””
He scooped her up.
“What happened?””
Kayla buried her face against his neck.
“Aunt Brittany says I have to go away.””
Darius looked over his daughter's shoulder.
Brittany's expression hardened.
“I did not say that.””
“You told me I needed special treatment,” Kayla sobbed.
“You said Daddy couldn't take care of me anymore.””
Darius felt a cold rage spread through him.
He handed Kayla gently to Evelyn.
“Take her upstairs, Mom.””
Brittany stepped forward.
“No. She needs to hear this.””
Darius blocked her path.
“She doesn't need to hear another word from you.””
“I'm her stepmother!””
“And you've abused the trust I gave you.””
Brittany laughed bitterly.
“You're making me sound like some kind of monster because of one haircut.””
“One haircut?””
He pointed toward the staircase.
“She is afraid to look in a mirror because of what you did.””
“She'll get over it!””
The words escaped her before she could stop them.
Evelyn stared at her in disgust.
Darius's voice dropped.
“Get out.””
Brittany blinked.
“What?””
“You heard me. Leave my house.””
She looked down at the folder in her hand, then back at him.
“You can't throw me out without hearing what I found.””
“I'm listening.””
She opened the folder and removed a copy of the hospital photograph.
Darius recognized it immediately.
His stomach tightened.
“Where did you get that?””
“Your father's study.””
“You went through his private documents?””
“I had every right to understand what was happening in this family.””
“You had no right to go near Kayla's records.””
Brittany slapped the photograph onto the coffee table.
“Look at it, Darius. Really look at it.””
He did.
Two newborn girls.
Two bracelets.
Two names.
The same photograph Rebecca had shown him that morning.
Brittany tapped the image.
“Do you know what this means?””
“It means the hospital made an identification error.””
“No. It means your father knew there was a problem and paid to make it disappear.””
Darius's eyes narrowed.
“How do you know that?””
“Because I found the payment records.””
She removed another document.
A transfer from one of his father's private accounts to a legal trust associated with St. Catherine's Hospital.
The amount was substantial.
Darius examined the date.
Six years earlier.
Three days after Vanessa's funeral.
“You've been digging through my father's financial records,” he said.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“From what?””
“From being deceived!””
Darius held up the photograph.
“Kayla is Vanessa's biological daughter. I've confirmed it.””
Brittany went still.
Then she smiled.
“You think that's all there is to it?””
Darius felt his pulse quicken.
“What does that mean?””
She leaned closer.
“Your father wasn't simply paying the hospital to correct paperwork. He was paying someone to keep Elena Morris away from this family.””
Darius stared at her.
“Where did you hear that?””
“I found a letter.””
“Show me.””
Brittany pulled a folded document from the folder.
It was a letter from a lawyer dated five years earlier.
The letter referred to an agreement between the Carter family and Elena Morris. It stated that Elena had accepted financial assistance in exchange for waiving certain claims against the hospital.
But one paragraph had been blacked out.
Darius read the remaining lines.
Then he looked up.
“This doesn't prove what you're suggesting.””
“It proves your father bought silence.””
“It proves he paid a legal settlement.””
“Because he knew the truth would destroy his reputation!””
Darius's expression turned cold.
“What exactly are you trying to accomplish?””
Brittany hesitated.
Then she said, “I want you to understand that Kayla's future is complicated.””
“No. You want me to believe she's a problem.””
“She may not even be the child everyone thinks she is!””
Darius stepped toward her.
“Careful.””
Brittany lifted her chin.
“I'm only saying that if your father concealed something this serious, you need to consider whether Kayla should remain under your sole care while everything is investigated.””
There it was.
The same argument hidden in the forged guardianship document.
The same language used in the email about proving Darius couldn't provide a stable environment.
He stared at his wife.
“You've been building a case against me.””
“That's ridiculous.””
“You collected notes about Kayla's behavior. You arranged an assessment without my consent. You forged my signature on a guardianship form. And now you're telling me I might not be fit to raise her.””
Brittany's face changed.
“Who told you about the signature?””
“You did. When you admitted you knew I'd refuse.””
She swallowed.
Darius took out his phone.
“I have copies of everything. The documents, the email, the authorization form, and the records showing you contacted the hospital.””
For the first time, she looked frightened.
“You can't use private documents against me.””
“Watch me.””
She grabbed the leather folder.
“Darius, you're making a terrible mistake.””
“No. I made a mistake when I believed you cared about Kayla.””
Brittany's eyes filled with tears.
“I do care about her!””
“Then why did you shave her head?””
“Because I lost control!””
“Why did you tell her I would be ashamed of her?””
“I was angry!””
“Why did you forge my signature?””
Brittany opened her mouth, but no answer came.
Darius stepped back.
“Get out of my house.””
She stared at him for several seconds.
Then her face hardened.
“You think you can do this to me and walk away?””
“This isn't about you.””
“Everything in this house is about Kayla. Every holiday, every dinner, every decision. You gave her everything and left me with nothing.””
Darius shook his head.
“You had a husband who trusted you. You had a home. You had every opportunity to become someone Kayla could love.””
“And she never did!””
“She was six years old!””
Brittany's voice rose.
“She looked at me like I was nobody! She called Evelyn when she needed help. She called you when she wanted something. She never once treated me like family.””
Darius stared at her.
“She was a child looking for kindness.””
Brittany turned away, breathing hard.
Then she picked up her handbag.
“Fine,” she said.
“I'll leave. But don't come crying to me when you discover what your father really did.””
She walked toward the front door.
Darius followed her.
At the threshold, she stopped.
“You should ask Evelyn why she was the one who brought Kayla home from the hospital that night.””
Darius froze.
“What?””
Brittany smiled faintly.
“Ask her who was actually holding the baby when your father signed the discharge papers.””
She stepped outside.
Before Darius could respond, she turned back one final time.
“And ask yourself why your mother has spent six years making sure you never met Elena Morris.””
Then she left.
Darius stood in the doorway until her SUV disappeared down the driveway.
Behind him, Evelyn spoke softly.
“Darius?””
He turned.
She looked pale.
“Did you know?”” he asked.
“Know what?””
“That you brought Kayla home from the hospital.””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“I was there when you arrived.””
“That isn't what I asked.””
She glanced toward the staircase.
Kayla was standing halfway up, listening.
Darius lowered his voice.
“Mom, did you ever meet Elena Morris?””
Evelyn looked at him for a long moment.
Then she nodded.
“Yes.””
“When?””
“The night Kayla was born.””
Darius felt the room tilt again.
“What happened?””
Evelyn took a shaky breath.
“Vanessa was dying. You were outside the operating room. Your father was speaking with the hospital administrator. I went into the maternity ward to see the baby.””
“Which baby?””
“The one in the bassinet marked with Vanessa's name.””
Darius's throat tightened.
“And?””
Evelyn began to cry.
“I saw Elena Morris standing beside the window. She was holding another baby. She told me the nurses had confused their bracelets.””
“Did you believe her?””
“I didn't know what to believe.””
“So what did you do?””
Evelyn looked toward Kayla.
“I took the baby your father told me was yours.””
Darius stared at her.
“Did you check the bracelet?””
“No.””
“Did you ask for the records?””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because your father told me the hospital had confirmed everything. And because you were waiting to hold your daughter.””
Darius turned away.
The pain in his chest was almost unbearable.
“You knew there had been a question.””
“I knew there had been confusion. I didn't know what the final records would show.””
“And you never told me.””
Evelyn wiped her cheeks.
“I thought the hospital had corrected it.””
“Everyone thought something. Nobody asked the questions that mattered.””
Kayla's small voice interrupted them.
“Grandma?””
Both adults turned.
She was holding the railing with one hand and her stuffed rabbit with the other.
“Am I going to have to leave?””
Darius rushed to the stairs.
“No, baby.””
“But Aunt Brittany said I might have another mommy.””
He stopped.
Kayla's eyes were wide and frightened.
“Is that true?””
Darius knelt on the step below her.
“Your birth mother is Vanessa. The woman I loved, and the woman who gave birth to you. We have some things to learn about the past, but nothing changes how much I love you.””
Kayla looked at Evelyn.
“Grandma?””
Evelyn climbed the stairs and wrapped her arms around the little girl.
“You are loved, sweetheart. More than you can imagine.””
Kayla began to cry.
“I don't want another family.””
Darius pulled her close.
“You don't have to decide anything today.””
She clung to him.
“Promise you'll never send me away?””
He pressed his cheek against her hat.
“I promise I will always fight to keep you safe.””
For several minutes, the three of them remained on the staircase.
Then Darius's phone rang.
His attorney's name appeared on the screen.
He answered.
“What's wrong?””
“Darius, I've just received an emergency filing from your wife's lawyer.””
Darius straightened.
“What filing?””
“A petition for temporary guardianship. Your wife is claiming that your household is unstable and that Kayla requires immediate intervention.””
Darius looked toward Evelyn.
Brittany hadn't simply left.
She had been preparing her next move.
His attorney continued.
“And there's something else. She has submitted a sworn statement from a witness claiming you threatened her with electric clippers.””
Darius went still.
The dressing room.
The buzzing motor.
The moment he'd held the clippers inches from Brittany's hair.
He had stopped before touching her, but someone could easily twist the scene into something else.
“Who is the witness?”” he asked.
His attorney hesitated.
“Your wife says it's your mother.””
Darius turned slowly toward Evelyn.
She stared at him in horror.
“I never said that,” she whispered.
But before he could answer, his attorney added the words that made everything worse.
“The hearing is scheduled for tomorrow morning. And Darius? If the judge believes the allegations, Brittany could receive temporary authority over Kayla's care.””
Darius looked at his daughter.
Her little fingers were wrapped tightly around his.
For the first time since the nightmare began, he understood the real danger.
Brittany wasn't trying to win an argument.
May you like
She was trying to take his child.
And tomorrow, he would have to prove that the woman who had hurt Kayla was the one who should never have been trusted with her.
