Chapter 2: The Secret Beneath the Vanity

Brittany snatched the envelope from Evelyn's hand and shoved it into her handbag.

“It's private,” she said sharply.

“You have no right to go through my belongings.””

Darius stared at her.

“Then why did you react like that?””

“Because you people are treating me like a criminal!””

“You shaved my six-year-old daughter's head while she screamed for help,” Darius replied.

“Forgive me if I don't care about your privacy right now.””

Brittany's cheeks flushed.

She looked toward Kayla, who was still standing beside Evelyn with one hand wrapped around her father's fingers.

“See?”” Brittany said, pointing at the little girl.

“This is exactly the problem. She runs to everyone whenever she doesn't get her way. You both make her think she's untouchable.””

Darius moved between his wife and his daughter.

“Don't point at her.””

“I wasn't going to hurt her.””

“You already did.””

The words landed harder than a slap.

For several seconds, Brittany said nothing. Then she reached for the clippers on the vanity.

“I'll finish the job myself. If we're going to make such a ridiculous scene over a haircut, we might as well make it even.””

Darius caught her wrist before she could touch them.

“Try that again, and you'll never come within ten feet of her.””

Brittany jerked her hand away.

“Get your hands off me!””

“Gladly.””

He turned to Evelyn.

“Take Kayla to her room. Lock the door if you need to. I'll be there in five minutes.””

Evelyn nodded.

“I'm taking her to the guest suite. I want a doctor to look at her scalp.””

“Call Dr. Morgan. Tell him it's urgent.””

Kayla tugged on Darius's sleeve.

“Daddy, are you coming?””

He knelt.

“I'm right behind you, sweetheart.””

“Promise?””

Darius held out his little finger.

“Pinky promise.””

She hooked her finger around his and followed Evelyn into the hallway.

Darius waited until their footsteps faded before turning back to Brittany.

“Sit down.””

She laughed without humor.

“Excuse me?””

“Sit. Down.””

Something in his voice made her lower herself onto the edge of the vanity stool.

Darius placed his phone on the counter and folded his arms.

“Start talking.””

Brittany crossed her legs.

“I already told you. Kayla wouldn't cooperate.””

“That's your explanation for the hair. I'm asking why you panicked when Evelyn picked up that envelope.””

“It's a personal matter.””

“Then it shouldn't be difficult to explain.””

She stared at him for a moment, then looked away.

“You wouldn't understand.””

“Try me.””

Brittany pressed her lips together.

Darius picked up the envelope from where it had fallen open beside her handbag. A folded sheet of paper had slipped halfway out.

Brittany jumped to her feet.

“Don't!””

He unfolded it.

At the top was the name of a private children's behavioral clinic. Beneath it were several handwritten notes and a scheduled appointment for that afternoon.

Darius read the first few lines.

Then his expression hardened.

The notes referred to Kayla by name.

One sentence had been underlined twice.

Persistent defiance. Emotional manipulation. Requires stricter correction before behavioral problems become permanent.

Darius slowly raised his eyes.

“Who wrote this?””

Brittany's fingers twisted around the strap of her handbag.

“It's a recommendation.””

“From whom?””

“I've been researching child development.””

“You've been researching how to treat my daughter like a criminal?””

“Don't twist my words!””

He held up the paper.

“Who wrote this?””

Brittany swallowed.

“Dr. Halpern.””

“I've never heard of him.””

“He's a specialist.””

“Specialist in what?””

“Behavioral correction!””

The last two words echoed against the mirrors.

Darius looked down at the paper again.

There were handwritten instructions in the margin. One mentioned removing privileges. Another suggested establishing visible consequences for repeated disobedience.

At the bottom, beside the appointment time, Brittany had written three words.

Father must agree.

Darius tapped the paper.

“Why does this say I have to agree?””

“Because he's her father.””

“Did you make an appointment for my daughter without telling me?””

Brittany lifted her chin.

“I was trying to help her.””

“By arranging some kind of assessment behind my back?””

“She has problems, Darius!””

He went still.

“What problems?””

“She cries over everything. She refuses to do what she's told. She gets upset whenever I correct her. She thinks she can manipulate you with those big eyes and those tears.””

Darius stared at her in disbelief.

“She is six.””

“And at six, children learn boundaries!””

“Boundaries don't require shaving a child's head.””

Brittany's eyes filled with angry tears.

“You have no idea what it's like living in this house with her. Every time I try to do anything, she runs to you. You come home with gifts, take her out for ice cream, and let her sleep in your room when she has nightmares. Meanwhile, I'm the one who has to maintain order.””

“She's my daughter. Not a project you've been assigned.””

“I am your wife!””

“And she's my child!””

The silence that followed seemed to absorb the light in the room.

Brittany looked away first.

Darius returned to the paper.

There was another note, written in smaller handwriting, near the bottom of the page.

If the father resists, emphasize long-term psychological consequences of inconsistent discipline.

Darius read it twice.

Then he turned the page over.

A second sheet was attached behind it.

This one was not from the clinic.

It was a printed email.

The sender's name was obscured by a dark smudge, but the subject line was visible.

*Re: Kayla's Assessment and Guardianship Options.*

Darius felt his stomach tighten.

He read the opening lines.

As discussed, the immediate goal is to establish that Darius is unable to maintain a stable disciplinary environment. Document all incidents involving Kayla's emotional outbursts.

Below that, another sentence caught his eye.

Once he accepts the assessment, we can proceed with the next step.

Darius stopped reading.

He looked at Brittany.

“What next step?””

She shook her head too quickly.

“It's not what you think.””

“Then tell me what it is.””

“It was just a conversation.””

“With whom?””

“Someone who knows about these things.””

“Brittany!””

She flinched.

Darius placed the email on the vanity.

“Who are you planning to involve in my daughter's life?””

Brittany's eyes flickered toward the door.

That was answer enough to make his blood run cold.

“You're planning to take her somewhere,” he said.

“A facility? A school? Some kind of treatment center?””

“No!””

“Then why does this email mention guardianship?””

Brittany's face went pale.

Darius stepped closer.

“Did you intend to have my daughter declared unfit to live with me?””

“That's insane!””

“Then explain the email!””

She grabbed the paper and crumpled it in her fist.

“I was desperate! You never listen to me. You never let me make decisions. Everything in this house revolves around Kayla!””

Darius stared at her.

There it was.

Not concern.

Not discipline.

Resentment.

“You were jealous of a six-year-old child,” he said quietly.

Brittany's mouth fell open.

“That's not fair.””

“Fair?”” He gestured toward the hallway.

“She's hiding her head because you made her believe I wouldn't love her anymore. What part of that is fair?””

Brittany began crying.

For years, Darius had believed her tears meant remorse. He had seen them during arguments, during family disagreements, whenever she felt overlooked or misunderstood.

He had always tried to comfort her.

Now he watched her cry and wondered how many times he had mistaken self-pity for innocence.

“You need to calm down,” she whispered.

“We can talk about this rationally.””

“We're done talking.””

He picked up his phone.

“What are you doing?””

“Calling my attorney.””

Brittany grabbed his arm.

“Darius, don't do this!””

He pulled free.

“You should have thought about that before you touched my daughter.””

“Please. I made a mistake.””

“A mistake is forgetting an appointment. A mistake is burning dinner. You deliberately hurt a child.””

“I didn't mean to hurt her!””

“You heard her begging you to stop.””

Brittany's face crumpled.

Then, unexpectedly, she reached into her handbag and pulled out another document.

“Fine,” she said.

“You want the truth? Here it is.””

She slapped the paper onto the vanity.

Darius glanced down.

It was a temporary guardianship authorization, partially completed but not signed by him.

His name appeared on the first page.

So did Kayla's.

The document would allow Brittany to make certain decisions regarding the child's care and schooling during Darius's business travel.

Darius had never seen it before.

He picked it up slowly.

“Where did you get my signature?””

Brittany went silent.

His eyes moved to the bottom of the page.

A signature was already there.

It looked like his.

Almost exactly.

Darius felt the room tilt around him.

He had signed dozens of documents in his office over the past year. Business contracts, property transfers, banking authorizations.

But he had never signed this.

He looked at Brittany.

“Did you forge my signature?””

She took a shaky breath.

“I was going to ask you to sign it.””

“After you had already signed my name?””

“I knew you'd refuse!””

“Because I would never give you authority over my daughter without discussing it with me!””

“She needs someone who can make decisions when you're away!””

“Her grandmother has been doing that for years. Evelyn has never needed to shave her head to prove she can care for her.””

Brittany pressed both hands against her temples.

“You're making me sound evil.””

Darius put the document in his jacket pocket.

“No. Your actions are doing that all by themselves.””

He walked toward the door.

Behind him, Brittany's voice changed.

The tears disappeared from it.

“Darius, wait.””

He stopped but didn't turn.

“You should ask Evelyn what she knows about Kayla's mother.””

Darius slowly looked back.

“What does that have to do with anything?””

Brittany smiled, though her eyes remained cold.

“Everything.””

He stared at her.

“Kayla's mother is dead. What could Evelyn possibly know that I don't?””

Brittany reached for her handbag.

“Ask her why she never told you where Kayla's birth certificate really came from.””

For several seconds, Darius couldn't move.

Then he hurried out of the dressing room.

He found Evelyn in the guest suite, sitting on the edge of the bed while Kayla lay beneath a soft white blanket. A pediatrician's bag rested on a nearby chair, and Evelyn was gently smoothing a clean cloth over the little girl's forehead.

Kayla's eyes brightened when she saw him.

“Daddy!””

Darius crossed the room and kissed her forehead.

“Hey, princess.””

“Are you mad at Aunt Brittany?””

He paused.

“I'm upset about what she did. But none of this is your fault.””

Kayla looked down at the blanket.

“Can my hair grow back?””

“Yes, sweetheart. Your hair will grow back.””

“Will it look like it did before?””

Darius swallowed.

“It might take some time, but we'll take care of it together.””

She studied his face.

“Will you still do princess appointments with me?””

His eyes burned.

“Every Sunday. Even if it takes us all morning.””

Kayla managed a tiny smile.

Then her eyelids grew heavy, and she curled against Evelyn's side.

Darius stepped into the hallway with his mother.

“Mom, I need to ask you something.””

Evelyn studied his face.

“What happened?””

“Brittany says you know something about Kayla's birth certificate.””

The color drained from Evelyn's cheeks.

Darius noticed immediately.

“Mom?””

May you like

She looked toward the closed guest-room door.

Then she whispered, “Your wife was never supposed to find out.””
