Chapter 4: The Price of Silence

James stood motionless beside his desk, the dead phone still pressed against his ear.

"Vanessa?""

Nothing.

He lowered the phone and immediately called her back.

The call went straight to voicemail.

He tried again.

Nothing.

Elena stepped toward him.

"What happened?""

"Richard knows something about the blue folder.""

"How?""

James looked at the photograph of the old workshop.

"I think we've been asking the wrong question.""

Elena glanced at the picture.

"What question should we be asking?""

"Why did Richard approach my father in the first place?""

Before Elena could answer, James's phone vibrated.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

*Lower loading bay. Ten minutes. Come alone. Please, James.*

He recognized the number.

Vanessa.

Elena read his expression.

"You're not going alone.""

"She specifically asked me to.""

"And you specifically have a billionaire's worth of reasons not to walk into a dark parking garage without protection.""

James almost smiled.

"Stay near the security entrance. Don't let anyone know you're there.""

Elena nodded.

"I'll have Marcus bring the car around.""

James put the letter and photograph inside the blue folder.

Then he picked up his old leather jacket from the back of the chair.

He had worn it to the event because he hadn't wanted to dress like the man Vanessa might remember.

He hadn't expected to spend the evening discovering that the woman he had once loved might have been protecting him all along.

The lower loading bay was nearly empty.

A fluorescent light flickered above the concrete floor. Somewhere behind a metal door, a ventilation fan rattled continuously.

James heard footsteps.

"You're early," Vanessa whispered.

She emerged from behind a concrete pillar.

Her burgundy dress was now covered by a long black coat. Her hair had come loose, and her expensive earrings were gone.

She looked frightened.

James stopped a few feet away.

"Are you hurt?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"Not yet.""

"Where's Richard?""

"He thinks I'm in the car.""

James studied her face.

"Tell me what happened.""

Vanessa wrapped her arms around herself.

"I sent you the folder.""

"I figured.""

"I didn't know your father had kept the letter. I thought the folder contained only the original documents.""

James opened it slightly.

"There's a letter from him.""

Vanessa's eyes filled.

"He wrote to you?""

"Yes.""

She looked down.

"Then he finally told you.""

"Told me what? That Richard gave him the folder?""

Vanessa nodded.

"Twelve years ago, Richard came to our workshop. He said he was impressed by Project Lantern. He claimed he wanted to invest in it before someone else discovered what your system could do.""

James remembered the photograph.

"He was standing outside the workshop.""

"Yes. I took that photograph.""

"Why?""

"Because I didn't trust him.""

James looked at her.

"You didn't trust him, but you let him into our business?""

"We were desperate, James.""

She said it quietly.

He remembered the rent notice. The unpaid bills. The nights when they had eaten whatever was left in the refrigerator.

He remembered being so convinced that a single investment would change everything.

Vanessa continued.

"Richard offered your father four hundred thousand dollars. He said it would cover the workshop, the prototype, and the first hospital installation. Your father wanted to accept.""

"Why didn't he tell me?""

"Because Richard wanted you focused on development. He said investors didn't like dealing with family disagreements.""

James laughed without humor.

"That sounds like him.""

"Your father agreed to sign a loan guarantee. The patent would remain yours. The agreement allowed Richard to recover his investment if the business failed, but it didn't give him ownership of the technology.""

James opened the blue folder.

"Then why does the transfer agreement carry Dad's signature?""

Vanessa swallowed.

"Because Richard changed the paperwork after your father signed it.""

The noise of the ventilation fan seemed louder.

James stared at her.

"You're saying he substituted the agreement?""

"Yes.""

"Did you see him do it?""

"I saw the documents the following morning. The page your father had signed was no longer the same page.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Vanessa's eyes closed.

"Because he already had everything arranged.""

She described the meeting that had followed.

Richard had placed two documents on the workshop table. One was the loan agreement Walter believed he had signed. The other was a patent assignment bearing Walter's signature and Vanessa's name as witness.

Richard claimed that the patent had been transferred legally.

When Walter objected, Richard opened a second folder.

It contained fabricated invoices, altered accounting statements, and a document suggesting that money from an earlier development grant had been diverted into Walter's personal account.

"He told your father he could have him prosecuted," Vanessa said.

"He also threatened to accuse you of stealing the development funds.""

James's jaw tightened.

"My father would never have taken that money.""

"I know.""

"Everyone knew he was barely paying his own bills.""

"Richard didn't care about the truth. He cared about having something he could use against you.""

James turned away.

The anger that rose inside him was so sudden that he had to take a breath before speaking.

"And you left.""

Vanessa looked at him.

"Yes.""

"You disappeared after telling me you were tired of being poor.""

"I know.""

"You let me believe I wasn't good enough.""

Her eyes filled again.

"I thought it was better than letting you destroy your future trying to fight a man who had already prepared to destroy your father.""

James shook his head.

"That's not protection, Vanessa. That's making a decision for someone you claim to love.""

"I was twenty-six. I was terrified.""

"So was I.""

She nodded.

"I know.""

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Vanessa reached into her coat and removed a small photograph.

It showed Walter sitting at the workshop desk, holding a cup of coffee.

On the back was a handwritten message.

*Don't let the boy stop building.*

James looked at it.

"Where did you get this?""

"Your father gave it to me the day before you left for that investor meeting. He knew what Richard was planning.""

James stared at her.

"He knew?""

"He knew enough to be afraid. He asked me to keep you away from the dispute.""

"Why didn't he handle it himself?""

"He tried. Richard had already moved the money through several companies. The legal papers were complicated, and your father couldn't afford the lawyers.""

James rubbed his forehead.

"And you decided to marry Richard?""

Vanessa looked toward the exit.

"That came later.""

"Explain.""

"After you left Cleveland, Richard started contacting me. He offered to settle the debt and promised he'd leave Walter alone. He said he could help me recover the original documents.""

"You believed him?""

"At first.""

"And then?""

"Then I realized he wanted me close because he knew I could identify the original agreements.""

James stared at her.

Vanessa continued.

"I married him because I thought I could get access to his private business records. I believed I could find the original pages and prove what he had done.""

"You married the man who destroyed our lives to find evidence against him?""

"Yes.""

"How long?""

"Twelve years.""

James looked at her wedding ring.

She twisted it slowly.

"At first, Richard was generous. He gave me access to his office, his accounts, and his archives. But the moment he realized I was looking for something, he changed. He started controlling where I went, who I spoke to, and what I could access.""

"Why didn't you leave?""

Vanessa looked at him.

"Because every time I tried, he reminded me what he could do to Walter's memory and your company. He kept telling me that if I exposed him, he'd make sure everyone believed you were the criminal.""

James felt sick.

"Did you find the documents?""

"Not until last month.""

She took a small memory card from her coat pocket.

"Richard kept a scanned copy of the original loan agreement in an encrypted archive. I also found an audio recording.""

James took the card.

"What recording?""

"His conversation with your father.""

"How did you get it?""

"Your father recorded the original meeting. He kept it on an old voice recorder. I found the backup file hidden in the archive.""

James looked at her sharply.

"My father recorded Richard?""

"Yes.""

"Then we can prove everything.""

"Maybe. But there's something else.""

"What?""

Vanessa hesitated.

"Richard knows I found it.""

A door slammed somewhere behind them.

Vanessa's face changed.

James turned.

A black luxury sedan had entered the loading bay.

Its headlights swept across the concrete.

Richard stepped out.

He wasn't smiling anymore.

Two security men followed him.

"Vanessa.""

His voice was quiet, but it carried across the empty garage.

"Get in the car.""

She didn't move.

Richard looked at James.

"I see you've been receiving some rather interesting gifts.""

James placed the memory card inside his jacket.

"Evening, Richard.""

Richard gave a cold laugh.

"You're enjoying this, aren't you? The mysterious folder, the dramatic revelations. Very entertaining.""

"Did you change the contract my father signed?""

Richard's expression hardened.

"Your father was a grown man. He signed what was put in front of him.""

"That's not an answer.""

"It's the only answer you're getting.""

Richard turned toward Vanessa.

"Come here.""

She stood still.

"I said come here.""

James stepped between them.

"She can decide where she wants to go.""

Richard stared at him.

"You're making a mistake, James.""

"Perhaps.""

"You have a billion-dollar company. A reputation. Investors who would abandon you the moment they heard the word fraud.""

James's voice remained calm.

"Then I'd better make sure the truth is louder.""

Richard's mouth tightened.

He took a document from his jacket and held it up.

"Your father didn't just sign one agreement. He signed a final acknowledgment. A document confirming that Vale Urban owned Project Lantern.""

James looked at the paper.

Richard smiled.

"And guess whose signature is on it as a witness?""

Vanessa's face turned white.

Richard held the document closer.

"Your wife.""

James looked at Vanessa.

She lowered her eyes.

May you like

Richard smiled again.

"Ask her what she signed that night.""
