Chapter 1: Looks Can Be Deceiving
"James? You still dress like that?""
Vanessa's laugh floated across the marble driveway, loud enough for the two women standing behind her to hear.
James Carter stopped beneath the golden lights of the glass-fronted Bellmont Tower.
For a moment, he simply looked at her.
Vanessa wore a ruby-burgundy designer dress that hugged her figure perfectly. Diamonds glittered at her ears, and a gold bracelet rested against the wrist wrapped around her husband's arm.
Beside her stood Richard Vale, a man whose tailored charcoal suit probably cost more than James's first car.
Two elegant women, Celeste and Brooke, stood slightly behind them, each holding a champagne glass.
Vanessa looked James up and down.
Her eyes paused at his old brown leather jacket. The sleeves were worn, the collar had begun to crack, and one elbow carried a small repair stitched by hand.
She tilted her head.
"I honestly thought you'd have upgraded by now.""
Celeste covered a smile with her fingers.
Brooke looked at James's shoes.
"Maybe he's going for that vintage look," she whispered.
Vanessa laughed again.
James didn't.
He slipped one hand into his jacket pocket and gave his former fiancée a calm look.
"Looks can be deceiving, Vanessa.""
Richard chuckled.
"Well, that's a confident answer.""
Vanessa leaned closer to her husband.
"Richard, this is James. We knew each other years ago.""
James noticed the way she said it.
Not we were together.
Not we almost got married.
Just we knew each other.
He nodded politely.
"Good evening, Richard.""
Richard extended his hand, but before James could accept it, a black Rolls-Royce Phantom glided into the circular driveway.
Its polished body reflected the building's enormous glass windows. The engine settled into silence beside James, and a uniformed valet hurried toward the driver's door.
Vanessa turned to look.
Her expression changed from amusement to curiosity.
Richard frowned.
"Whose Rolls-Royce is that?""
The valet opened the driver's door, retrieved a small leather key case, and walked straight toward James.
"Your car is ready, Mr. James.""
He presented the key with both hands.
"Thank you, Marcus," James said.
The valet smiled respectfully.
"Of course, sir. Have a wonderful evening.""
Richard stared at the car, then at James.
His eyebrows rose.
"Wait.""
He looked more closely at the man's face.
Then his expression went pale.
"James Carter?""
James slipped the key into his pocket.
"Yes.""
Richard took half a step backward.
"You're the James Carter?""
Vanessa glanced between them.
"Richard, what are you talking about?""
Richard barely heard her.
"That's James! He's the founder of Asterion Grid. He's the man behind the company valued at nearly nine billion dollars!""
The women behind Vanessa stopped smiling.
Celeste lowered her champagne glass.
Brooke's mouth opened slightly.
Vanessa stared at James as though someone had quietly replaced the man standing in front of her.
"N-No. That can't be right.""
Richard turned toward her.
"Why didn't you tell me you knew him?""
Vanessa's fingers tightened around his arm.
"I didn't know!""
James adjusted the cuff of his old jacket.
He wasn't wearing an expensive watch. There was no diamond ring on his finger, no flashy designer belt, and no obvious sign of the fortune Richard had just announced.
Yet the valet stood ready to open his car door.
James looked at Vanessa.
"Congratulations on your marriage.""
Vanessa swallowed.
"Thank you.""
There was an awkward silence.
Richard quickly stepped forward, his expression changing into the polished smile of a businessman who had just discovered an important opportunity.
"James, what a surprise. I've followed your company for years. Asterion's work in energy infrastructure is extraordinary.""
"That's kind of you.""
"Actually, my company has been looking for a strategic partner. Vale Urban is expanding into smart buildings, and I believe there could be a tremendous opportunity for us.""
James looked at him.
"Send your proposal to our acquisitions department.""
Richard laughed nervously.
"Of course. But perhaps we could discuss something more personal tonight.""
"We'll follow the same process as everyone else.""
Richard's smile tightened.
"Naturally.""
James turned toward the entrance.
Vanessa watched him go.
The man she remembered had once counted coins before ordering dinner. He had borrowed his father's tools to repair an old computer and spent nights working at a folding table.
She remembered his cramped apartment.
His cheap coffee.
His promises.
And she remembered something else.
Something she hadn't thought about in years.
"James.""
He stopped.
Vanessa released Richard's arm and approached him.
For the first time that evening, she wasn't smiling.
"Can we talk?""
James glanced at Richard, then back at her.
"About what?""
"About the past.""
His expression remained unchanged.
"That was a long time ago.""
"I know.""
"Then perhaps we should leave it there.""
Vanessa's eyes flickered.
"Please. Just five minutes.""
Richard stepped between them with a forced laugh.
"Darling, James has an important evening ahead. We shouldn't keep him.""
James gave Richard a polite nod.
"Good evening.""
He walked through the revolving doors.
Behind him, Marcus closed the Rolls-Royce and returned to his post.
Inside Bellmont Tower, the entrance hall glittered with crystal chandeliers and polished stone. Guests in expensive suits gathered beneath a massive screen displaying the evening's event:
*THE FUTURE OF RESILIENT INFRASTRUCTURE — AN EVENING PRESENTED BY ASTERION GRID.*
A woman in a black evening suit approached James.
"You're late," she said.
James looked at his watch.
"Three minutes.""
"Which, according to your standards, is practically a disaster.""
He smiled faintly.
"Good evening to you too, Elena.""
Elena Park was Asterion Grid's chief operating officer and one of the very few people who could speak to James without worrying about his title.
She handed him a thin folder.
"The board is ready. The hospital fund announcement is scheduled for nine.""
"Everything approved?""
"Almost.""
She glanced toward the entrance.
"Is there a problem?""
James looked through the glass.
Vanessa and Richard were still standing outside. Richard was speaking rapidly, his hands moving as he tried to explain something. Vanessa wasn't listening.
She was staring at James.
"Old acquaintance," James said.
Elena followed his gaze.
"An uncomfortable one?""
"That's one way to describe it.""
They started toward the ballroom.
As they walked, Elena lowered her voice.
"Speaking of uncomfortable acquaintances, Richard Vale's company is on tonight's partnership list.""
James stopped.
"Vale Urban?""
"Yes. They've submitted a proposal for our building-energy platform.""
"Who approved the preliminary meeting?""
"Finance. Their numbers looked promising.""
James opened the folder and glanced at the first page.
Then he saw something that made his expression change.
A project reference.
A name he hadn't seen in twelve years.
*PROJECT LANTERN.*
He turned the page.
The attached diagrams looked familiar. Too familiar.
Elena noticed his silence.
"James?""
"Where did Vale Urban get these drawings?""
"They claim their engineering division developed the system.""
James stared at the document.
"That's impossible.""
"Why?""
He closed the folder.
"Because this design was never supposed to exist outside a small room in Cleveland.""
Before Elena could respond, Richard's voice sounded behind them.
"James! Just the man I wanted to see.""
James turned.
Richard approached with his wife beside him, wearing the same confident smile he'd used outside.
"We were just discussing the proposal," Richard continued.
"I think you'll find our approach very interesting.""
James looked at Vanessa.
She wasn't watching her husband.
She was staring at the folder in James's hand.
Then, when Richard turned to greet another guest, she leaned slightly toward James.
Her voice was barely audible.
"Whatever you do, don't let him open the blue file.""
James's fingers tightened around the folder.
"What blue file?""
Vanessa's face lost its color.
And before she could answer, Richard turned back toward them.
"Darling," he said pleasantly, "is everything all right?""
Vanessa stepped away from James.
"Everything is fine.""
But James knew it wasn't.
May you like
Because twelve years ago, there had been a blue file.
And the last time he'd seen it, Vanessa had been standing beside him.
