Chapter 3: The Document That Shouldn't Exist

Damon locked the study door.

The click sounded unnaturally loud.

Serena stood beside the desk, clutching her phone so tightly that her knuckles had turned white. Her black butterfly-wing dress hung unevenly from one shoulder, the torn seam exposing the pale lining beneath.

The room no longer felt like part of a birthday celebration.

It felt like a courtroom where everyone had already seen the evidence except the person on trial.

Damon faced his wife.

“Start talking.””

Serena shook her head.

“I need a minute.””

“You've had plenty of minutes. You had time to cut your dress, invent an assault, and let me hit my father.””

Her eyes filled again.

“I never wanted you to hit him.””

“You stood there while I did it!””

“I was scared!””

“Of what? The man sitting behind his desk?””

Calvin raised a hand.

“Damon.””

Damon turned toward him.

“Don't ask me to calm down.””

“I'm not asking you to calm down. I'm asking you to listen before you make another mistake.””

Damon's jaw tightened.

“I already made the biggest mistake of my life.””

He looked at the blood on his father's lip.

“I'm sorry.””

Calvin held his gaze.

“I know.””

Those two words nearly broke Damon.

His father had every reason to shout at him, to demand an apology, to remind him of the countless times he had warned him not to act before thinking.

Instead, Calvin reached for a clean handkerchief and pressed it against his mouth.

Damon lowered his head.

“I should have asked what happened.””

“Yes,” Calvin replied.

“You should have.””

Serena took a cautious step toward them.

“Damon, please. Don't let him turn you against me.””

Damon looked at her sharply.

“Stop.””

“But—”

“Every time you speak, you try to make this about what someone else did to you.””

She flinched.

He pointed at the laptop.

“That footage showed exactly what happened. You created the situation, and I reacted without thinking. I own my part in that.””

Calvin gave a small nod.

Damon continued.

“But you don't get to use my mistake to erase yours.””

Serena's shoulders sagged.

For a moment, she looked smaller than he had ever seen her.

Then her expression changed.

“You want the truth?”” she asked.

“Yes,” Damon said.

She looked at Calvin.

“Your father was going to change the trust.””

Calvin's eyes narrowed.

“Again, I was reviewing safeguards.””

“You were going to remove my protections.””

“What protections?””

“The agreement you signed when Damon and I got married.””

Damon frowned.

“What agreement?””

Serena glanced at him.

“The marital agreement.””

“I know about the prenup.””

“No, you don't know everything.””

Calvin placed the handkerchief on the desk.

“Explain.””

Serena drew a shaky breath.

“When we got married, you told me that if anything happened to Damon, I would be financially secure. You said the family would never leave me with nothing.””

Calvin stared at her.

“I told you that you would always be treated fairly. I never promised you control of the company or an unrestricted claim on the family trust.””

“You promised I would be protected.””

“You are protected under the existing agreement.””

“Not if you change it!””

“I cannot simply rewrite a signed agreement because I feel like it. And I have not attempted to do so.””

She turned to Damon.

“He was going to make sure I couldn't access anything.””

Damon rubbed his forehead.

“Access what?””

“The money. The estate. Everything.””

“Serena, you're already a beneficiary under the arrangement we discussed.””

“Only under certain conditions.””

“Because it's a trust, not a checking account.””

She laughed bitterly.

“Listen to yourself. You sound just like him.””

Damon stared at her.

“Maybe because he's making sense.””

The words landed harder than he intended.

Serena looked away.

Calvin pulled out his chair and sat down.

“Let's establish something. I did review the trust documents this afternoon. I asked our attorney to confirm that the transition would protect the company and prevent anyone from pressuring Damon into making decisions for personal reasons.””

Serena's head snapped up.

“Who told you I was pressuring him?””

“No one. I was reviewing the structure before the board meeting.””

“Then you were planning to change it!””

“I was reviewing it. That is not the same thing.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I expect you to understand the difference between a document being reviewed and a document being signed.””

Damon looked at his father.

“Did you prepare anything new?””

“Yes. A proposed amendment to strengthen the safeguards around the family trust. It has not been executed.””

Serena's face went pale.

“Where is it?””

Calvin watched her carefully.

“Why do you want to know?””

“Because I have a right to know what affects my future.””

“You have a right to consult your own attorney. You do not have a right to confidential company documents.””

She looked at Damon.

“Tell him to stop treating me like a criminal.””

Damon didn't answer.

Calvin opened a drawer and removed a thin folder.

“This is the proposed amendment. It has not been signed. It has no legal effect as an executed amendment.””

He laid it on the desk.

Serena stared at the folder as if it were a loaded weapon.

Damon noticed.

“Have you seen that before?””

She hesitated.

“No.””

Calvin opened the folder.

“Then explain why the message on your phone refers to an original agreement in my safe.””

Serena swallowed.

“I don't know.””

Calvin tapped the desk.

“Your message says, ‘The original agreement is still in the safe.’ What agreement?””

“I don't know!””

“You have repeated those words twice. You know something.””

She looked at Damon.

“Please.””

He closed his eyes briefly.

“Stop asking me to rescue you from questions you should be answering.””

For several seconds, the only sound was the soft hum of the laptop.

Then Serena spoke.

“There was a document.””

Calvin leaned forward.

“What document?””

“A private agreement.””

“Between whom?””

She looked down.

“Between you and someone else.””

Calvin went very still.

Damon stared at her.

“Dad, what is she talking about?””

“I don't know yet.””

Serena's voice trembled.

“I saw a copy.””

“Where?”” Calvin asked.

She shook her head.

“Serena.””

“I can't tell you.””

Damon took a step toward her.

“Why not?””

“Because I was told not to.””

“By whom?””

She pressed her lips together.

Calvin rose from his chair.

“Then let me make this simple. If someone has obtained confidential documents from my office and is using them to manipulate you, I need to know who it is.””

Serena looked up.

“And if I tell you?””

“Then we'll know what we're dealing with.””

“And you'll protect me?””

Calvin's expression hardened.

“I will protect the truth. Your safety is a separate matter.””

She stared at him.

For the first time that night, she seemed to understand that neither man would automatically stand on her side.

Damon held out his hand.

“Give me your phone.””

She hesitated.

“Damon—”

“Please.””

Something in his voice made her surrender it.

He read the two messages again, then examined the conversation list.

Most of the threads had been deleted.

But one remained.

A contact labeled only *M*.

Damon opened it.

The latest message was from that afternoon.

*Remember: the agreement must be signed before the board meeting. If Calvin refuses, the second plan begins tonight.*

Damon looked up.

“What is the second plan?””

Serena's lips trembled.

“I don't know.””

He scrolled farther.

There were no names, no photographs, and no obvious identifying information. Just a series of short exchanges about a document, a deadline, and the need to keep Damon from interfering.

One message, sent two days earlier, caught his attention.

*He trusts you. Use that.*

Damon felt sick.

He turned the phone toward Serena.

“Who wrote this?””

She looked at the screen.

Then she looked at Calvin.

Finally, she whispered, “I thought I was helping you.””

Damon shook his head.

“Helping me do what?””

“Take control.””

“Control of what?””

“The company. The trust. Your future.””

“My future doesn't require you to frame my father.””

“I didn't frame him!””

Damon pointed at the laptop.

“Then what do you call that?””

Serena's mouth opened, but no answer came.

Calvin took the phone from Damon and examined the messages.

“Who is M?””

“I can't tell you.””

“Why?””

“Because—”

A sudden noise interrupted her.

Three sharp knocks sounded against the study door.

Everyone turned.

A man's voice came from the hallway.

“Mr. Whitmore? It's Frank. We have a situation.””

Calvin unlocked the door.

Frank stood outside, looking more serious than before.

“What happened?”” Calvin asked.

Frank glanced at Serena.

“I checked the access logs for the security system. Someone attempted to delete the study footage remotely.””

Damon's face tightened.

“Did they succeed?””

“No, sir. The original recording is secure. But the request came from a user account with administrative access.””

Calvin's expression hardened.

“Which account?””

Frank hesitated.

“Your account, sir.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Calvin shook his head.

“I did not access the system.””

“I know,” Frank said.

“The request originated from your credentials, but the login came from another device.””

Damon stepped closer.

“Can you trace it?””

“I'm working on it.””

Calvin looked toward the laptop.

“Someone knew the camera would expose the lie and tried to erase the evidence.””

Serena's breathing became shallow.

Damon turned toward her.

“Did you try to delete the footage?””

“No!””

“Did M?””

“I don't know!””

Frank glanced between them.

“There's one more thing.””

Calvin's voice sharpened.

“What?””

“About twenty minutes ago, someone entered the west corridor using an old staff access code. The corridor leads to your private office.””

Calvin's eyes narrowed.

“My office?””

“Yes, sir.””

“Did the person get inside?””

Frank looked uncomfortable.

“We haven't confirmed that yet.””

Calvin turned toward the desk.

The top drawer was slightly open.

He was certain he had closed it earlier.

He walked over and checked the contents.

His passport was there. So was his watch case and the folder containing the unsigned trust amendment.

But the small black safe beneath the desk stood open.

Calvin stared at it.

“That was locked.””

Damon moved beside him.

“What was inside?””

Calvin slowly straightened.

“An original agreement.””

Serena covered her mouth.

Calvin turned toward her.

“The document you mentioned.””

She backed away.

“I didn't take it.””

“I haven't accused you of taking it.””

“You're looking at me like you have!””

“Because you knew it existed before I told you.””

She shook her head desperately.

“I only saw a copy!””

“Where?””

Her eyes filled.

“Someone showed it to me.””

“Who?””

She whispered a name.

“Margaret.””

Damon frowned.

“Your aunt Margaret?””

Serena nodded.

Calvin's face became unreadable.

“Tell us exactly what she showed you.””

Serena sat on the edge of the sofa, suddenly looking exhausted.

“She came to see me two weeks ago. She said you had a private agreement with someone that could change everything after the succession.””

“What agreement?”” Damon asked.

“She said it proved you were hiding something from your son.””

Calvin's voice was cold.

“Did she show you the document?””

“Yes.””

“Was it signed?””

“I think so.””

“You think so?””

“It was a copy. I didn't examine every page.””

Calvin looked at Frank.

“Get Margaret on the phone.””

Frank nodded and stepped into the hallway.

Damon crouched in front of Serena.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because she said you'd never believe me.””

“You didn't give me the chance.””

“She said your father would make me look unstable. She said he would use his money to destroy my reputation if I challenged him.””

Damon stared at her.

“And you decided the best way to prove that was to invent an assault?””

Serena began crying again.

“I panicked.””

“No. You planned.””

She looked away.

Damon stood.

“I'm going to ask you one more time. What was the agreement?””

Serena wiped her cheeks.

“Margaret said Calvin had promised someone a controlling interest in the company. She said that after you became CEO, you would discover that most of the business wasn't really yours to control.””

Calvin's expression changed.

Not with fear.

With recognition.

He walked slowly toward the window.

“That is not what the agreement says.””

Damon turned.

“Then what does it say?””

Calvin didn't answer immediately.

He looked out at the gardens, where guests were still moving beneath the lanterns, unaware that the birthday celebration had become a crisis behind closed doors.

Finally, he spoke.

“Years ago, I entered into a private agreement to protect this company from a threat that no longer exists.””

Damon frowned.

“What threat?””

“Someone who wanted to force a sale of the business.””

“Who?””

Calvin turned back.

“Someone inside our family.””

Serena's face went white.

Damon stared at his father.

“You're saying a member of our family tried to take over the company?””

“I'm saying the agreement was designed to prevent that from happening.””

“Then why keep it secret?””

“Because the person involved was never meant to know how much I understood.””

Before Damon could respond, Frank returned.

“Margaret is on her way.””

Calvin nodded.

“Good.””

Frank hesitated.

“She asked whether Serena was still with you.””

The room went silent.

Damon looked at Serena.

“Why would she ask that?””

Serena didn't answer.

Calvin's gaze sharpened.

“Did she know you were coming to my study tonight?””

Serena stared at the floor.

Then, in a voice barely above a whisper, she said, “She told me exactly what to do.””

Damon closed his eyes.

Calvin's hands curled at his sides.

“What else did she tell you?””

Serena looked up at her husband.

“She said that once you saw the footage, you would blame me. She said you'd leave me, and then you'd have no choice but to turn against your father.””

Damon's expression twisted.

“Why would she want that?””

“Because she said the family would be divided.””

Calvin looked at the open safe.

“And while we were fighting, someone would take the agreement.””

A heavy silence settled over the room.

Then Damon noticed something.

The unsigned trust amendment still lay on the desk.

But beneath it was a second sheet of paper he hadn't seen before.

He picked it up.

It was a photocopy of a document bearing Calvin's signature.

At the bottom, in bold type, were the words:

*IRREVOCABLE CONTROL AGREEMENT*

Damon read the first paragraph.

Then the second.

His hands began to shake.

“Dad,” he said slowly, “this says that if the original agreement is activated, control of Whitmore Holdings transfers to a third party.””

Calvin snatched the page and scanned it.

His face drained of color.

“That isn't the agreement I signed.””

Damon looked up.

“What?””

“The document I signed years ago contained a termination clause. It could not transfer control under the conditions described here.””

He flipped the page over.

There, beneath the copied signature, was a date from twelve years earlier.

And beside it, a witness signature.

Damon recognized the handwriting immediately.

He had seen it on birthday cards, holiday notes, and every family letter he had received since childhood.

He whispered the name.

“Margaret.””

Calvin stared at the signature.

Outside the study, footsteps approached.

A moment later, the handle began to turn.

Then Margaret's voice came through the door.

“Calvin? We need to talk.””

Calvin looked at his son.

“Don't let her leave this house.””

The door opened.

Margaret stood in the doorway wearing her burgundy dress and diamond necklace, a glass of champagne still in her hand.

She looked at Calvin's split lip.

Then at Damon's expression.

Finally, her gaze settled on Serena's torn black dress.

For the first time that evening, Margaret did not smile.

Damon held up the photocopy.

“Did you sign this?””

Margaret glanced at the page.

A beat passed.

Then she calmly set down her champagne.

“Yes,” she said.

Calvin stared at his sister.

“Why?””

Margaret closed the door behind her.

“Because you were never supposed to be the one who controlled the company forever.””

May you like

She looked directly at Damon.

“And because your father has been lying to you about who Whitmore Holdings really belongs to.””
