Chapter 2: The Trap in the Study

Calvin was reviewing a document when Serena entered his study.

The room smelled of polished wood, leather, and the faint cedar scent of the fireplace logs stacked beside the hearth. Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves lined two walls. A large window overlooked the dark gardens, where lanterns illuminated the gravel paths.

Calvin glanced up from his desk.

“Serena? I thought you were enjoying the party.””

“I was.”” She closed the door behind her.

“I need to ask you something.””

He removed his reading glasses.

“Then ask.””

She walked toward the desk but stopped several feet away.

“Is it true you're planning to delay Damon's appointment?””

Calvin exhaled.

“We've already discussed this.””

“Not properly.””

“There is nothing more to discuss tonight.””

“Because you don't want to admit it?””

His eyes narrowed.

“Admit what?””

“That you don't trust him.””

Calvin placed his glasses on the document.

“Damon has my trust. The board has a process to follow. Those are two different things.””

“That's a convenient distinction.””

“Serena, I have spent forty years building this company. I will not be lectured about responsible leadership by someone who has never attended a board meeting.””

The insult struck exactly where she wanted it to.

Her mouth tightened.

“So that's what you think of me?””

“I think you're upset about something you don't fully understand.””

“I understand more than you think.””

“Then explain it.””

She hesitated just long enough to make him believe she was fighting back tears.

“What happens to me if Damon takes over and you decide I'm no longer welcome in this family?””

Calvin blinked.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

“Why would you think that?””

“Because I've heard the way you speak about me when you think I'm not listening.””

“Give me an example.””

She looked away.

“You called me a distraction.””

“When?””

“Last month.””

Calvin shook his head.

“I said Damon was distracted by the wedding arrangements during a major acquisition. I never called you a distraction.””

“You said I was making him weak.””

“I said he needed to learn to separate his personal life from business decisions.””

Serena's eyes filled with tears.

“You always find a way to make me sound unreasonable.””

Calvin stood.

“I am not going to argue with you about something I never said.””

She stepped closer to the desk.

“Then give Damon the authority you've promised him.””

“That is not your decision.””

“He's your son!””

“And you are his wife. Neither fact changes the board's legal obligations.””

She stared at him.

For a second, the sadness disappeared from her face.

Calvin saw something colder beneath it.

“Is this really about Damon?”” he asked.

Her expression changed immediately.

“What kind of question is that?””

“An honest one.””

She gave a short laugh.

“You think I'm after his money.””

“I think you have become unusually interested in the family trust.””

“Because it affects our future.””

“It affects the company's future, too.””

“And what about mine?””

Calvin returned to his chair.

“Your future is something you and Damon should discuss together. I will not change the trust to settle a personal argument.””

Serena's fingers curled around the strap of her clutch.

“You'd rather let your daughter-in-law suffer than loosen your grip on a few million dollars.””

Calvin's face hardened.

“Get out of my study.””

She went very still.

“What?””

“You heard me. I will not be spoken to like this in my own home.””

For a moment, she appeared genuinely stunned.

Then she lowered her head.

“Fine.””

She turned toward the door.

Calvin picked up his glasses.

He thought the conversation was over.

It wasn't.

Behind him, Serena opened her clutch.

The tiny metallic click of the scissors was almost lost beneath the distant music from the ballroom.

She gripped the fabric beneath her left arm and pulled.

The seam split with a sharp tearing sound.

Calvin looked up.

“What are you doing?””

Serena spun around.

Her eyes widened. Her mouth fell open.

She stumbled backward, deliberately knocking her hip against the corner of a side table. A porcelain vase wobbled but remained upright.

Then she screamed.

“Don't touch me!””

Calvin shot to his feet.

“I didn't touch you!””

She backed away, one hand clutching the torn seam of her dress, the other pointing accusingly at him.

“Stay away from me!””

“Serena, what on earth—”

“You said you'd make me regret coming here!””

“I said nothing of the kind.””

“You tried to grab me!””

Calvin looked from her face to the torn fabric.

He understood, suddenly, that something was terribly wrong.

“Serena,” he said slowly, “I have not moved from behind this desk.””

She shook her head violently.

“Don't come any closer!””

“I am not coming closer.””

“You can't do this to me!””

Calvin's gaze shifted upward.

The security camera above the bookcase was visible from where he stood. Its small red light continued to glow.

“Whatever you're trying to do,” he said, “you should stop now.””

Her expression flickered.

Only for a second.

Then she raised her voice again.

“Help! Somebody help me!””

The study door flew open.

Damon rushed inside.

He had heard the scream from the hallway while speaking to one of the board members. He had run so quickly that he nearly collided with the doorframe.

“Serena?””

She turned toward him, and her face crumpled.

“Damon!””

He crossed the room in three strides.

“What happened?””

She rushed into his arms.

“Your father—”

Calvin stepped around his desk.

“Damon, listen to me.””

Serena clung to her husband.

“Your father tried to attack me!””

Damon looked down at her torn dress.

His face changed.

“What?””

“He told me to get out, and when I tried to leave, he grabbed me.””

Calvin stared at her.

“That is a lie.””

Serena flinched as if the word itself had struck her.

Damon's jaw tightened.

“Dad, what happened?””

“I told her to leave because she was arguing about the trust. She tore her own dress. I never touched her.””

Serena shook her head.

“Why would I do that?””

Calvin looked directly at his son.

“That's exactly what I'm asking.””

Damon stepped between them.

“Dad, don't come any closer.””

Calvin stopped.

“I am standing beside my own desk.””

“Just stay there.””

“Damon, you need to listen to me.””

“I am listening.””

“No. You're looking at a torn dress and assuming you know what happened.””

Serena pressed her face against Damon's chest.

“He's calling me a liar.””

Calvin's voice rose.

“Because you are lying!””

Damon shoved his father backward.

“Don't speak to her like that!””

Calvin caught the edge of the desk to steady himself.

For the first time in years, his son was looking at him not with disagreement or disappointment, but with disgust.

“Damon,” Calvin said quietly, “look at me.””

Damon didn't.

“Your father tried to attack me,” Serena whispered again.

“I was terrified.””

Damon's hands curled into fists.

Calvin saw it.

“Son, don't do anything you'll regret.””

That was the wrong thing to say.

Damon swung.

His fist struck Calvin across the mouth.

Calvin stumbled into the desk, and the crystal paperweight crashed to the carpet.

Serena gasped.

Not because Calvin had been hurt.

Because the punch had happened.

Because the scene had reached the moment she had wanted.

Damon stood frozen, staring at his own hand.

Calvin slowly lifted his head.

Blood marked his lower lip.

He looked at his son with an expression that held more pain than anger.

Then he pointed toward the security camera.

“Check the camera before you judge me.””

Damon swallowed.

“What?””

“The camera. It records this room. Check the footage.””

Serena tightened her grip on his arm.

“Damon, please. We don't need to stay here.””

Calvin ignored her.

“Call the security office. Have them bring up the recording. If I touched her, I'll accept whatever consequences follow.””

Damon looked from his father to Serena.

For the first time, doubt entered his face.

Serena noticed immediately.

“Why would he say that if he didn't do anything?”” she whispered.

Calvin gave a bitter laugh.

“Because I have nothing to hide.””

Damon pulled his arm free from Serena's grip.

“I'm checking the footage.””

Her eyes widened.

“Damon—”

“Now.””

He crossed to the desk phone and called the estate's security office.

“Frank, it's Damon. I need the recording from my father's study.””

A pause.

“Yes, this evening. The last fifteen minutes.””

Another pause.

Damon glanced toward Serena.

“Bring it to the study. Immediately.””

He hung up.

Serena's face had gone pale.

Calvin noticed.

“Something wrong, Serena?””

She swallowed.

“No.””

“Then you won't mind watching.””

She looked toward the door.

Damon stepped in front of her.

“Stay here.””

“I just want to go somewhere private.””

“Why?””

“Because everyone is staring at me.””

“No one is staring at you. We're in a study.””

She looked at him as if he had become a stranger.

“Damon, I am your wife.””

“And he's my father.””

The words hung between them.

Calvin wiped the blood from his mouth with a handkerchief.

“I have been called many things in business,” he said.

“I've been accused of greed, arrogance, and ruthlessness. But I never thought I'd have to defend myself against my own son in my own home.””

Damon looked down.

“Dad, I—”

“Don't apologize yet.””

A knock interrupted them.

Frank, the head of estate security, entered carrying a small laptop.

He was a broad-shouldered man in his fifties who had worked for Calvin for nearly twenty years. His expression was serious.

“Mr. Whitmore,” he said to Calvin.

“I have the footage.””

Damon held out his hand.

“Give it to me.””

Frank hesitated.

“Sir, I think you should watch the entire recording before making any further decisions.””

“I intend to.””

Frank placed the laptop on the desk and opened the video file.

Serena moved toward Damon.

“Darling, please.””

He stepped away from her.

The video began.

The image was black and white, with a timestamp in the corner.

Calvin sat behind his desk.

Serena entered.

They watched themselves argue without sound for the first few seconds while Frank adjusted the playback.

Then the audio came through the laptop speakers.

Calvin's voice filled the study.

“Get out of my study.””

The footage showed Serena turning away.

Then, with Calvin still seated, she opened her clutch.

Damon leaned closer.

Serena removed a pair of scissors.

His face went blank.

On-screen, she cut the seam of her dress.

She pulled the fabric apart.

Then she stumbled backward, turned toward Calvin, and screamed.

“Don't touch me!””

The room became completely silent.

On the laptop, Calvin remained behind his desk with both hands visible.

He had never touched her.

Damon watched his wife point at his father and invent an assault that had never happened.

He watched himself rush into the room.

He watched himself strike Calvin.

The footage ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Damon slowly turned toward Serena.

“You made me strike my own father.””

Serena's lips parted.

“Damon, I can explain.””

He stared at her.

“Explain what? The scissors? The dress? The lie?””

She took a step forward.

“I was frightened.””

“You cut your own dress!””

“Because he was going to ruin our lives!””

Calvin went still.

Damon looked at her in disbelief.

“What did you just say?””

Serena realized her mistake.

Her eyes darted toward Frank, then Calvin, then the laptop.

“I didn't mean—”

Calvin's voice was cold.

“No. I think you meant exactly what you said.””

Damon took a step away from her.

“You stood here and told me my father attacked you. You watched me hit him. You didn't stop me.””

“You were defending me!””

“From something that never happened!””

Serena began to cry.

Real tears this time, but they did nothing to soften his face.

“I thought he would take everything from us,” she whispered.

Calvin straightened.

“Take what from you?””

She didn't answer.

He looked toward Frank.

“Secure the original recording. Make two copies. Nobody deletes or edits anything.””

“Yes, sir.””

“And ask the staff not to disturb us.””

Frank nodded and left.

Calvin turned back to Serena.

“Now you can tell us the truth.””

Serena wiped her cheeks.

“I wanted Damon to understand what you were doing.””

“What I was doing?”” Calvin repeated.

“I was sitting at my desk.””

“You were planning to change the trust!””

“I was reviewing safeguards.””

“For whom?””

“For my son.””

Serena shook her head.

“No. For yourself.””

Damon ran a hand through his hair.

“Serena, I don't understand you anymore.””

She rushed toward him.

“Please. We can talk about this alone.””

He stepped back.

“No.””

“Damon—”

“Don't touch me.””

She froze.

The same words she had screamed at Calvin now came from her husband, and this time they were not part of a performance.

Calvin looked at the torn dress, the scissors lying on the desk, and the laptop that had just exposed the truth.

Then he asked the question neither of them wanted to hear.

“Serena, who told you the trust documents were going to change?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because Calvin had never told her there were revised trust documents.

And Damon had never mentioned them either.

Yet Serena had walked into the study convinced that something was about to be taken from her.

Calvin's expression sharpened.

“Who have you been talking to?””

Serena looked at Damon.

Then at the door.

And finally, with a trembling hand, she reached into her clutch and pulled out her phone.

The screen lit up.

A new message had arrived.

*Did you get him to sign it?*

Damon read the words over her shoulder.

His face drained of color.

“Sign what, Serena?””

She clutched the phone against her chest.

Calvin stepped forward.

“Show me the message.””

“No.””

“Show me.””

“It's private!””

Damon stared at her.

“You lied about an assault, made me punch my father, and now you're hiding a message asking whether you got him to sign something?””

Serena shook her head desperately.

“You don't understand.””

“Then make me understand!””

She looked between the two men.

For a moment, she appeared trapped.

Then she lifted her chin.

“I did it for us.””

Calvin's voice turned dangerously quiet.

“Whatever you did, Serena, you did not do it for my son.””

He extended his hand.

“Give me the phone.””

She stepped backward.

“No.””

Damon's voice broke.

“Serena, please. Just tell us who sent that message.””

Her phone vibrated again.

This time, the message preview appeared on the screen before she could hide it.

*If Calvin refuses to sign, use the second plan. The original agreement is still in the safe.*

Calvin stopped breathing for a moment.

He knew that wording.

He had seen it before.

Not in a text message.

In a document that should never have left his private files.

He looked at Serena, and the anger in his face gave way to something far more serious.

“Damon,” he said, “lock the study door.””

Damon stared at him.

“Why?””

Calvin pointed at Serena's phone.

May you like

“Because your wife may not be the only person involved in this.””

And from somewhere deep inside the mansion, a door slammed.
