Chapter 8: The Man Who Came Looking for His Daughter
Andrew Miller stood in the entrance hall holding a photograph of a little girl.
He was in his early forties, dressed in a dark jacket and jeans. His hair was slightly disheveled, and his eyes carried the exhaustion of someone who had spent years searching for answers.
Marcus approached him.
“Mr. Miller?””
Andrew nodded.
“Thank you for seeing me.””
Marcus gestured toward the living room.
“Come inside.””
Andrew glanced toward the staircase.
“Is Vanessa here?””
“Yes.””
“Then we need to be careful.””
Marcus frowned.
“Why?””
Andrew placed the photograph on the coffee table.
It showed a little girl with dark curls, wearing a yellow dress.
Lily.
“I've been trying to find my daughter for eight years,” Andrew said.
Marcus studied the photograph.
“Vanessa told us she died.””
Andrew laughed without humor.
“She told everyone that.””
“Why?””
“Because she wanted me to stop looking.””
Marcus sat down.
“Start from the beginning.””
Andrew took a deep breath.
“I met Vanessa when we were both working in a small marketing company. We were young. We had a daughter, Lily, and for a while, I thought we were building a life together.””
He paused.
“But Vanessa wanted more money, more influence, more everything. When I started questioning some of her financial decisions, our relationship fell apart.””
Marcus leaned forward.
“What financial decisions?””
Andrew removed a folded document from his jacket.
“Money was disappearing from an account we had opened for Lily. Vanessa said it was being used for childcare and medical expenses. But the receipts never matched.””
Marcus examined the document.
It was a bank statement.
Several withdrawals had been made from the account.
“Did you report it?””
“Yes. But by then, Vanessa had already transferred the money into another account.””
Andrew looked at him.
“An account connected to Daniel.””
Marcus's jaw tightened.
“Daniel Carter?””
Andrew nodded.
“Your business partner.””
Marcus stared at the statement.
The name appeared clearly.
Daniel's company.
Andrew continued.
“When I confronted Vanessa, she accused me of being controlling. She filed for temporary custody and claimed I was financially unstable.””
“Was that true?””
“No. I had a stable job and a home. But she had connections.””
“Daniel.””
Andrew nodded.
“He introduced her to people who could help her make the case look convincing.””
Marcus sat back.
“And Lily?””
Andrew's eyes filled.
“Vanessa arranged for her to stay at St. Anne's Children's Home while the custody dispute was being reviewed. She told me it was temporary.””
“What happened?””
“Three weeks later, the children's home said Vanessa had collected Lily.””
Andrew looked down.
“But Vanessa denied it. She told me Lily had been moved to another facility. Then she stopped answering my calls.””
Marcus felt a chill.
“You never saw her again?””
“Not until last month.””
He pulled out another photograph.
It showed Lily standing outside a school.
Marcus looked at it.
“How did you find her?””
“An employee at St. Anne's contacted me. She recognized my name from an old file. She told me Lily had been placed with a temporary guardian under a different surname.””
“Who?””
Andrew looked directly at him.
“Patricia Miller.””
Marcus frowned.
“Daniel's sister?””
“Yes.””
The room seemed to shrink.
Andrew continued.
“Patricia claimed she was helping Vanessa. But she had no legal authority to adopt Lily. The paperwork was fraudulent.””
Marcus stared at him.
“Did you confront her?””
“I tried. She refused to open the door. Then she told me Lily had been adopted overseas.””
Marcus's expression hardened.
“That's not possible.””
Andrew shook his head.
“No. It wasn't. I found Lily's school records. She was living less than an hour away.””
Marcus looked at the photograph again.
“Is she safe?””
Andrew hesitated.
“I believe so. But I haven't seen her yet.””
“Why not?””
“Because Patricia keeps changing the arrangements. I think she's afraid of losing whatever money she's been receiving.””
Marcus leaned forward.
“Money from whom?””
Andrew pulled out a final document.
“Daniel.””
Marcus felt his stomach tighten.
The document showed regular transfers from an account associated with Daniel's investment company.
They had been labeled as consulting payments.
But the recipient was Patricia.
“How long has this been happening?””
“Seven years.””
Marcus stared at the figures.
“Why would Daniel pay her for keeping Lily?””
Andrew looked at him.
“That's what I need to find out.””
Upstairs, Madison stood in the hallway with Nia.
She had heard the doorbell and watched Andrew enter.
“Who is that man?”” Nia asked.
“Someone looking for his daughter.””
Nia looked thoughtful.
“Like Daddy looking for me?””
Madison smiled sadly.
“Something like that.””
Nia held her stuffed rabbit tighter.
“Do you think Lily is scared?””
“Maybe.””
“Can we help her?””
Madison looked at the little girl.
For all the cruelty Nia had experienced, she still wanted to help someone else.
“I'm sure Dad will try.””
Then footsteps sounded behind them.
Vanessa emerged from her bedroom.
She looked directly at Madison.
“What is he doing here?””
Madison stepped in front of Nia.
“Talking to Dad.””
Vanessa's expression darkened.
“You need to go downstairs and tell your father to send him away.””
“No.””
Vanessa moved closer.
“Madison, don't make this difficult.””
“You lied about Lily.””
Vanessa grabbed the girl's arm.
“I said go downstairs!””
Madison pulled away.
“Stop touching me!””
Nia began crying.
“Please don't hurt her!””
Vanessa looked at Nia.
“Stay out of this.””
Madison immediately moved Nia behind her.
“You don't get to scare her anymore.””
Vanessa stared at her daughter.
For a moment, she looked almost shocked.
Then her expression became cold.
“You have no idea what you're doing.””
Madison answered quietly.
“Yes, I do.””
Downstairs, Andrew had just finished explaining the history of the custody dispute.
Marcus looked at the documents spread across the coffee table.
“Why did Elizabeth become involved?””
Andrew looked up.
“Because she discovered what Vanessa and Daniel were doing.””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“What exactly did she discover?””
Andrew took another breath.
“Elizabeth was a major investor in the medical company where Vanessa worked. She discovered that several patient assistance accounts had been altered.””
Marcus frowned.
“Patient assistance accounts?””
“Money intended to help families pay for treatment. Some of it was being diverted.””
Marcus looked at the documents.
“Was Daniel involved?””
Andrew nodded.
“He helped move the money through several companies.””
Marcus's face hardened.
“And Vanessa?””
“She was responsible for accessing the accounts.””
Marcus slowly stood.
“That's why Elizabeth confronted her.””
“Yes.””
Andrew looked down.
“Elizabeth also discovered that Vanessa had used the same method to take money from Lily's account.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
Everything was beginning to connect.
The medical company.
The trust.
The forged documents.
Daniel.
Vanessa.
And the little girl who had supposedly died.
“Why did Elizabeth never tell me?””
Andrew hesitated.
“Because Vanessa threatened her.””
Marcus turned sharply.
“What?””
Andrew reached into his jacket and removed a folded letter.
“Elizabeth sent me this shortly before she died.””
Marcus accepted it.
The letter was brief.
Andrew,
I believe Vanessa and Daniel are planning something that could affect both of our children.
I have secured copies of the financial records. If anything happens to me, please find Evelyn Brooks.
Do not trust anyone connected to Daniel.
And please, keep looking for Lily.
Elizabeth.
Marcus stared at the paper.
His wife had been trying to protect both children.
And he had known nothing.
Before he could respond, footsteps sounded on the stairs.
Vanessa appeared.
She stopped when she saw Andrew.
Her face went completely white.
“You.””
Andrew stood.
“Hello, Vanessa.””
She looked at Marcus.
“Why is he here?””
Marcus answered calmly.
“Because he's Lily's father.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“He has no right to be here.””
Andrew stepped forward.
“I have every right.””
“You abandoned her!””
Andrew's voice cracked.
“I searched for her every single day.””
Vanessa looked away.
Marcus watched her carefully.
“Why did you tell us she was dead?””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Because she was better off without him.””
Andrew shook his head.
“You didn't give me a chance.””
“I gave you plenty of chances!””
“To do what? Give you more money?””
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
“Don't pretend you were a good father.””
Andrew placed both hands on the table.
“I was the one who paid for her medical care. I was the one who visited her every weekend until you changed her name and moved her.””
Vanessa's face twisted.
“You have no proof.””
Andrew pulled out a document.
“I have the original birth certificate. I have the court's temporary placement order. And I have a letter from Patricia admitting that she received money to keep Lily away from me.””
Marcus looked at the letter.
“Where is Patricia now?””
Andrew answered.
“She's waiting at a hotel near the children's home.””
Vanessa immediately reached for her phone.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Don't.””
She froze.
He held out his hand.
“Give me your phone.””
“You cannot take my property!””
“Then put it away.””
Vanessa backed toward the staircase.
“You're all making a terrible mistake.””
Andrew looked at her.
“No, Vanessa. The mistake was believing you could erase my daughter.””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
But this time, Marcus didn't believe them.
An hour later, Richard returned with Evelyn.
Evelyn examined Andrew's documents carefully.
When she reached the final page, she looked up.
“This is the missing piece.””
Marcus frowned.
“What?””
Evelyn placed the document on the table.
It was an original court order.
It stated that Lily was to remain in temporary care until a custody hearing could be completed.
The order had never been replaced by a permanent guardianship decision.
That meant Patricia had no legal authority to keep Lily.
Evelyn looked at Andrew.
“Have you contacted the authorities?””
“Yes. They're reviewing the file.””
Richard nodded.
“We'll provide copies of everything we have.””
Marcus looked toward the staircase.
“Where's Vanessa?””
Maria appeared.
“She went upstairs, sir.””
Marcus turned to Richard.
“I want someone to make sure she doesn't leave the property with any documents.””
Richard nodded.
Then Andrew stood.
“I need to see my daughter.””
Marcus looked at him.
“I understand.””
Andrew's voice broke.
“Eight years, Mr. Carter. Eight years of birthdays I wasn't invited to.
Christmas mornings I spent wondering whether she had enough food. Eight years of not knowing whether she was happy.””
Marcus felt the words deeply.
He looked toward the stairs where Nia was waiting.
“I know what it's like to lose time with your child.””
Andrew nodded.
“Then you understand.””
Marcus held out his hand.
“We'll find her.””
Andrew shook it.
But just as they prepared to leave, Madison came running down the stairs.
“Dad!””
Marcus turned.
“What happened?””
Madison was crying.
“Mom's gone.””
Marcus frowned.
“What do you mean?””
“She left through the back door.””
Maria hurried forward.
“I checked the kitchen. She took her handbag.””
Marcus immediately called Richard.
“Vanessa has left the house.””
Richard pulled out his phone.
“I'll contact the authorities.””
But Madison wasn't finished.
She held up a small piece of paper.
“I found this in her room.””
Marcus took it.
It was a handwritten address.
And beneath it were four words:
*LILY — FINAL ARRANGEMENT — TONIGHT.*
Andrew grabbed the paper.
His face changed.
“I know this address.””
Marcus looked at him.
“Where?””
Andrew swallowed.
“It's the location of the private residence where Patricia has been keeping Lily.””
Marcus reached for his car keys.
“Then we're going there.””
Andrew shook his head.
“Not without the authorities.””
Marcus looked toward Nia.
He wouldn't make another reckless decision that could put a child in danger.
He turned to Richard.
“Call them. Tell them we have reason to believe a child is being held under an invalid guardianship arrangement.””
Richard immediately made the call.
But Andrew looked at the address again.
Then he whispered:
“Why would Vanessa write 'final arrangement'?””
Nobody answered.
May you like
Because somewhere across town, a little girl named Lily was waiting for a woman who had promised to take her somewhere safe.
And Vanessa had no intention of letting her father find her first.
