Chapter 4: The Letter His Wife Left Behind
Marcus drove home faster than he had ever driven before.
The words from Daniel's office kept replaying in his mind.
Vanessa wasn't a stranger to your wife.
He had known Daniel for eleven years. He had trusted him with millions of dollars, confidential business deals, and decisions that could affect the future of his company.
But now he was beginning to question everything.
Why had Elizabeth named Vanessa as trustee?
Why had Vanessa hidden the guardianship documents?
And why had someone tried to transfer Nia's inheritance without his knowledge?
Most importantly, what had Elizabeth known?
When Marcus pulled into the driveway, Maria was waiting near the front entrance.
She held a small wooden box against her chest.
“Mr. Carter.””
“Where's the letter?””
Maria handed him the box.
“Inside, sir. I haven't opened it.””
Marcus examined the object.
It was made of dark walnut wood, with a small brass lock. He recognized it immediately.
Elizabeth had owned a matching jewelry box.
He remembered buying it for her on their fifth wedding anniversary.
His fingers trembled as he opened the lid.
Inside was a folded envelope, a silver key, and a photograph of Elizabeth holding baby Nia.
On the back of the photograph, Elizabeth had written:
For the day Marcus finally asks the right questions.
Marcus stared at the words.
“Maria, did Elizabeth ever tell you why she gave you this?””
Maria nodded.
“She said there might come a time when she couldn't protect Nia herself. She asked me to keep it safe.””
Marcus looked up.
“Did she mention Vanessa?””
Maria hesitated.
“Not by name, sir.””
“What did she say?””
Maria lowered her voice.
“She said someone might come into your life pretending to love your daughter. And she said I must never let that person separate you from Nia.””
Marcus felt his throat tighten.
He looked at the envelope.
His name was written across the front in Elizabeth's familiar handwriting.
He carefully opened it.
My dearest Marcus,
If you're reading this, something has happened that I hoped would never happen. I don't know how much time I have left, and there are things I haven't been able to tell you.
Please forgive me for keeping secrets.
When I created Nia's trust, I chose someone I believed could protect her if anything happened to me. At the time, I thought I was making the safest decision.
But people change. And sometimes, the people we trust are not who they appear to be.
Marcus stopped reading.
His breathing became shallow.
He turned the page.
There is something you need to understand about Vanessa.
His fingers tightened around the paper.
She knew me before you met her. She approached me during the final months of my illness, claiming she wanted to help. She said she had connections that could make certain medical arrangements easier.
I believed her.
I should not have.
Marcus lowered the letter.
He stared at Maria.
“Vanessa knew Elizabeth?””
Maria nodded slowly.
“I suspected it, sir.””
“Why didn't anyone tell me?””
“Mrs. Elizabeth asked me not to speak about it unless you found this box.””
Marcus looked down again.
The next paragraph was worse.
I discovered that Vanessa had been asking questions about Nia's inheritance. She wanted to know how much money would be available when Nia turned eighteen.
I confronted her. She told me I was being paranoid.
But I found documents with my signature that I never signed.
Marcus closed his eyes.
The forged guardianship document.
The trust transfer.
The same pattern.
He continued reading.
Marcus, if Vanessa ever becomes part of our family, please do not give her control over Nia's future. I know you will want to believe the best in people. That's one of the reasons I love you.
But please, this time, look at the evidence.
The final line was written in darker ink.
And whatever you do, never let her take Nia to Daniel's sister.
Marcus stared at the sentence.
Daniel's sister.
The proposed guardian.
His hands began to shake.
“Maria, do you know Daniel's sister?””
Maria nodded.
“Her name is Patricia. She came to the house once last year.””
“Why?””
“She said she was delivering some papers for Mrs. Carter.””
Marcus slowly folded the letter.
“Did she meet Nia?””
“Yes, sir.””
“What happened?””
Maria looked toward the staircase.
“She asked Nia whether she would like to live somewhere with a big garden and lots of toys.””
Marcus's face hardened.
“What did Nia say?””
“She said she wanted to stay with her daddy.””
He looked at the photograph of Elizabeth.
For the first time since his wife's death, he felt that her final days were no longer a closed chapter.
They were the beginning of something he had failed to understand.
“Thank you, Maria.””
“Mr. Carter?””
“Yes?””
“There's one more thing.””
Marcus looked up.
“Before Mrs. Elizabeth died, she asked me to remember a name.””
“What name?””
Maria swallowed.
“Evelyn Brooks.””
Marcus frowned.
“Who is Evelyn Brooks?””
“I don't know, sir. Mrs. Elizabeth said that if anything happened to Nia's trust, Evelyn would know where to find the original documents.””
Marcus immediately reached for his phone.
But before he could search the name, footsteps sounded behind them.
Vanessa stood at the top of the staircase.
Her eyes were fixed on the wooden box.
“What is that?””
Marcus closed the lid.
“Something my wife left for our daughter.””
Vanessa descended slowly.
“Elizabeth's box?””
“Yes.””
“Where did you get it?””
“Maria kept it safe.””
Vanessa's eyes moved toward the housekeeper.
“You went through my belongings?””
Maria lowered her head.
“It wasn't yours, Mrs. Carter.””
Vanessa's face flushed.
Marcus stepped between them.
“Don't speak to her like that.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“What did you read?””
Marcus held the box against his side.
“Enough.””
Her lips tightened.
“Marcus, whatever Elizabeth wrote, you have to remember that she was sick. She wasn't thinking clearly.””
The words struck him like a physical blow.
He took one step closer.
“You knew my wife.””
Vanessa didn't answer.
“You knew her before we met.””
She looked away.
Marcus's voice dropped.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I knew you'd react like this.””
“Like what?””
“Like Elizabeth was some perfect woman who could never have made a mistake.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Did you help her?””
Vanessa's expression changed.
“Help her with what?””
“Her medical arrangements.””
For a fraction of a second, Vanessa looked genuinely frightened.
Then she recovered.
“I don't know what you're talking about.””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“That's interesting.””
He opened his phone and showed her the photograph of the guardianship application.
“Then perhaps you can explain why your name appears here.””
Vanessa barely glanced at it.
“Those documents are private.””
“They concern my daughter.””
“They concern the trust.””
“Which you were apparently trying to control.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You're making a terrible mistake.””
Marcus looked directly into her eyes.
“No, Vanessa. I made a mistake when I trusted you.””
Her face turned pale.
Before she could respond, a small voice came from the hallway.
“Daddy?””
Nia stood there holding a stuffed rabbit.
She looked at Vanessa, then at Marcus.
“Are you fighting because of me?””
Marcus immediately crouched.
“No, sweetheart.””
“But she's angry.””
He opened his arms.
Nia walked toward him.
He held her gently.
Vanessa watched them.
For the first time, she seemed to understand that Marcus's loyalty was no longer something she could manipulate.
Then her phone vibrated.
She glanced at the screen.
A message appeared.
*Patricia: We need to talk. Evelyn has found the original file.*
Vanessa's face lost all color.
She quickly turned the phone over.
But Marcus had already noticed the name.
Patricia.
And Evelyn.
The two names his wife had left behind.
He looked at Vanessa.
“Who is Evelyn Brooks?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
May you like
Instead, she whispered something that made Marcus's blood run cold.
“She should have stayed dead to us.””
