Chapter 4: The Man Who Claimed to Be Marcus’s Father
Vanessa stared at the phone as though it had become a poisonous thing in her hand.
“Say that again,” she whispered.
On the other end of the line, Daniel Cross let out a slow breath.
“I said I'm Marcus's biological father.””
“No.”” Vanessa shook her head, even though he couldn't see her.
“That's impossible.””
“Is it?””
“Robert raised him. Robert's name is on his birth certificate. Marcus has spent his entire life believing—”
“Believing what Robert wanted him to believe.””
Vanessa gripped the edge of the closet shelf.
Daniel had been Robert Whitmore's attorney for nearly twenty years before opening his own private practice. He was sixty-one, impeccably dressed, and possessed the kind of quiet confidence that made people lean closer whenever he spoke.
He had first approached Vanessa eight months earlier at a charity gala in Buckhead.
At the time, she had assumed he was simply another wealthy man looking for an attractive woman to entertain him.
She had been wrong.
Daniel knew things about the Whitmore family that even Marcus didn't know. He knew the history of Robert's marriage, the disputes over the company, and the details of the family trust.
Most importantly, he knew where the money was.
And he had offered Vanessa a way to get her hands on it.
But he'd never mentioned being Marcus's father.
“Prove it,” she demanded.
“There's a photograph in the envelope.””
Vanessa searched the papers.
Beneath the ownership documents lay an old photograph of a young woman standing beside a much younger Daniel. They were outside a lakeside cabin, their arms wrapped around each other.
On the back, someone had written a date.
August 14, 1993.
Vanessa recognized the woman immediately.
Eleanor Whitmore.
Robert's late wife.
Her fingers began to shake.
“That's Marcus's mother.””
“Yes.””
“You were having an affair with her?””
“For a time.””
Vanessa stared at the photograph.
“Robert knew?””
“Not at first.””
“Then how can you be certain Marcus is your son?””
Daniel's voice hardened.
“Because Eleanor told me before she died.””
The room seemed to contract around Vanessa.
“Why didn't you tell him?””
“Because Robert threatened to destroy my career, my family, and anyone who helped me if I ever tried to claim the child.””
“That's a convenient story.””
“Believe what you like. But if you want to survive what's coming, you'll listen to me.””
Vanessa paced between the closet and the bedroom door.
Downstairs, she could hear Marcus speaking to Grace. The sound of his voice sent a fresh wave of panic through her.
“What do you want from me?”” she whispered.
“The documents. The transfer authorization. Everything you took from Robert's study.””
“You told me those papers would secure my future.””
“They can.””
“You said we could move the money tonight!””
“We still can, but not if you panic.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Panic? My husband has seen the footage of me framing his father! Robert is calling his attorney! And now you're telling me you're Marcus's real father?””
“Keep your voice down.””
“Don't tell me what to do!””
Daniel paused.
Then he said, “Vanessa, do you understand what Robert has been planning?””
She looked down at the document in her hands.
“He was going to put his shares into a trust for my baby.””
“Not just any trust. A protected trust with an independent administrator. Once that transfer becomes effective, neither you nor Marcus will have direct control over those assets.””
“So?””
“So the money you planned to take would become much harder to reach.””
Vanessa swallowed.
“How much are we talking about?””
“Enough to make the rest of your life comfortable.””
“How much?””
“Approximately forty-eight million dollars in voting shares and associated assets, depending on the final valuation.””
Vanessa's knees weakened.
Forty-eight million.
She had spent months imagining a future where she could finally escape Robert's restrictions. A private home in Palm Beach. A boutique hotel under her own name. An account nobody could monitor.
Now that future was slipping away.
“What do I do?”” she asked.
“Bring the documents to the address I sent you. I'll explain the rest in person.””
“And Marcus?””
“Keep him occupied.””
“How?””
Daniel's answer came without hesitation.
“Tell him you were frightened, confused, and overwhelmed by your pregnancy. Make him feel guilty for questioning you.””
Vanessa glanced toward the bedroom door.
“He already knows I lied.””
“Then give him another truth.””
“What truth?””
“That you discovered something about Robert that frightened you. Something that made you believe he intended to take your baby away.””
“That's ridiculous.””
“Is it? Robert is planning to control the inheritance. He has the power to make decisions about the trust. You can tell Marcus you thought his father was preparing to take the child from you.””
“He'd never believe that.””
“He believed you when you accused Robert of assault. Why wouldn't he believe you now?””
Vanessa said nothing.
Daniel continued.
“Listen carefully. Don't confess to anything. Don't destroy the papers. And don't let Grace out of your sight.””
“Why?””
“Because she has become a problem.””
Vanessa glanced at the phone.
For the first time, she wondered whether Daniel had ever intended to protect her.
Before she could ask, he ended the call.
She stood motionless for several seconds.
Then she shoved the papers back into the envelope and hid it beneath a loose panel behind the closet drawers.
A knock sounded at the bedroom door.
“Vanessa?”” Marcus called.
She closed the closet.
“I'm changing.””
“We need to talk.””
“Not now.””
“Open the door.””
She pressed a hand against her belly and forced herself to breathe slowly.
“Marcus, please. I'm not feeling well.””
There was a pause.
Then he spoke through the door.
“I'm taking you to the hospital.””
“I don't want to go.””
“You fell hard on the marble. I'm not taking any chances with the baby.””
She opened the door.
Marcus stood in the hallway with a set of car keys in his hand. His eyes were red, and a dark bruise had begun to form across his knuckles.
For one fleeting moment, Vanessa felt something close to remorse.
He had punched his own father because she had asked him to believe her.
He had trusted her more than the man who raised him.
And she had repaid that trust with another lie.
Then she remembered the forty-eight million dollars.
Remorse disappeared.
“Marcus,” she whispered, “before we go, I need to tell you something.””
He watched her cautiously.
“What?””
“Your father has been planning something behind your back.””
Marcus's face hardened.
“Don't start.””
“Please, just listen.””
“I've spent the last hour watching you lie to me. If you have something to say, tell me the truth.””
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
“He wanted to put the family money into a trust for the baby.””
Marcus blinked.
“Yes. He told me that.””
“But he wasn't going to let us control it.””
“He doesn't have to let us control it. It's his money.””
“It's your inheritance!””
“Not yet.””
“He wants to control your child through money, Marcus. What happens when he decides our baby shouldn't live with us? What happens when he decides you're not responsible enough to raise your own child?””
Marcus stared at her.
“Did he actually say that?””
“No.””
“Did he threaten to take our baby?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“He didn't have to.””
Marcus looked away.
“That's not what you promised me when we got married.””
She took his hand.
“I'm scared.””
He pulled away.
“And I'm trying to figure out who I've married.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You're my husband.””
“Then stop treating me like a fool.””
He turned toward the stairs.
Vanessa followed him, her heart pounding.
At the bottom, Grace was waiting with a small medical bag she had retrieved from the pantry.
Marcus frowned.
“What's that?””
“Your father left it here yesterday,” Grace said.
“He asked me to make sure the guest room was ready because he planned to stay overnight.””
Marcus stopped.
“Dad was planning to stay here?””
“Yes, sir.””
“Why?””
Grace looked toward Vanessa.
“He said he wanted to spend time with the baby before the trust paperwork was finalized.””
Marcus slowly turned to his wife.
“You knew that?””
Vanessa's mouth went dry.
“No.””
Grace looked down at the bag.
“There's something else. Mr. Whitmore asked me to put a gift in the nursery.””
Marcus opened the bag.
Inside lay a small, handmade wooden music box. Its lid was carved with tiny stars, and a folded note rested beneath it.
Marcus opened the note.
The handwriting was unmistakably his father's.
For my grandchild. May you grow up knowing that love is never something you have to earn.
Marcus read it twice.
His shoulders sagged.
Vanessa watched his expression change.
The note had done more damage than the security footage. It reminded Marcus of the man he had attacked and the child whose future he had nearly helped destroy.
He folded the paper carefully.
“I'm going to call Dad again.””
Vanessa's hand shot out.
“Marcus, don't!””
He looked at her fingers gripping his wrist.
“Why are you so desperate to keep me from talking to him?””
She released him.
“I just don't want another fight.””
“Then stop giving us reasons to have one.””
He walked toward the front door.
Vanessa stood beneath the chandelier, watching him leave.
Her phone vibrated.
A message from Daniel appeared on the screen.
I need the envelope tonight. There is one more name in those papers you haven't seen.
A second message followed.
If Robert finds it first, both of us are finished.
Vanessa stared at the words.
She had thought Daniel was offering her a way out.
Now she understood that she was trapped in something far bigger than a family dispute.
And somewhere inside the envelope hidden upstairs was a secret powerful enough to destroy not only her marriage, but the entire Whitmore dynasty.
Across town, Robert Whitmore sat in a private examination room at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital while a nurse cleaned the blood from his lip.
His phone lay on the chair beside him.
He had ignored three calls from his business partners and two messages from his attorney. For the first time in decades, the company's affairs could wait.
He stared at the small wooden music box on the table beside him.
He had bought it for his grandchild months before Vanessa's accusation.
He had imagined giving it to Marcus and watching his son laugh at the old-fashioned design.
Instead, he had been thrown out of his own home.
Robert closed his eyes.
The nurse finished applying a dressing.
“Mr. Whitmore, the doctor will be here shortly. I also recommend having someone drive you home.””
“I'll manage.””
“Your knee is swollen, and you have a mild concussion to rule out.””
“I said I'll manage.””
The nurse studied him for a moment.
Then she softened her voice.
“You don't have to do everything alone.””
Robert looked away.
“Apparently, I do.””
When she left, he picked up his phone and called his attorney.
“Thomas,” he said, “I need you to accelerate the trust review.””
His attorney's voice came through immediately.
“Robert, what happened? Marcus said there was an incident.””
“Marcus has made a serious mistake. But that's not why I'm calling.””
“Then what is?””
Robert looked toward the closed examination-room door.
“I need you to investigate Daniel Cross.””
A pause followed.
“Daniel? You worked with him for years.””
“I know.””
“Is this about the ownership documents?””
Robert closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
Thomas lowered his voice.
“Robert, I was going to call you this morning. Someone accessed the archive containing Eleanor's estate papers.””
Robert sat upright despite the pain in his knee.
“What?””
“The access log shows that your original family file was opened last night.””
Robert's fingers tightened around the phone.
“By whom?””
“That's the problem. The archive was accessed using your credentials.””
“I was at home last night.””
“I know.””
“Then someone used my identity.””
“That's what it looks like.””
Robert stared at the hospital wall.
For months, he had suspected that someone was probing the family's financial structure. He had assumed it was an ordinary attempt to obtain confidential business information.
Now he wondered whether the truth had been hiding in plain sight all along.
“Thomas,” he said, “what exactly was in Eleanor's original file?””
His attorney was silent.
Then he answered.
“Her final letter. The one you asked me to keep sealed.””
Robert's blood ran cold.
“Was it opened?””
“We can't tell yet.””
Robert gripped the edge of the bed.
“Find out.””
“I will.””
“And Thomas?””
“Yes?””
“Don't tell Marcus about the letter. Not until I know who has it.””
He ended the call.
For a long time, he sat without moving.
Then his phone vibrated again.
A message from an unknown number appeared on the screen.
You should have let the past stay buried, Robert.
Beneath it was a photograph.
Eleanor Whitmore stood beside a younger Daniel Cross.
Between them was a baby.
On the back of the photograph, a date had been written in black ink.
*October 22, 1994.*
Robert stared at the image.
May you like
His hands began to tremble.
Because that was the date Marcus had been born.
