Chapter 3: The Secret Hidden in Last Night's Recording
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The mansion's enormous chandelier hummed faintly above them. Somewhere in the kitchen, a refrigerator motor clicked off. Outside, the fountain continued to spill water into its stone basin as though nothing had changed.
Marcus slowly lowered his car keys.
“What happened last night?””
Grace looked at Vanessa before answering.
“Mrs. Whitmore was in the study.””
Vanessa's stomach tightened.
“That is none of your business.””
Grace swallowed.
“I was cleaning the hallway. I heard voices.””
“You were eavesdropping?”” Vanessa demanded.
“No, ma'am. I was doing my job.””
“Then do it somewhere else!””
Marcus stepped between them.
“Vanessa, stop.””
She turned toward him in disbelief.
“Excuse me?””
“You heard me. Let her finish.””
Vanessa's mouth fell open.
Marcus had never spoken to her that way in front of the staff.
Not once.
Grace drew a shaky breath and unlocked her phone again.
“The camera outside the study caught Mrs. Whitmore entering at 9:17 last night. She stayed for about eleven minutes.””
Marcus stared at Vanessa.
“Why were you in Dad's study?””
“I wasn't.””
Grace looked down at the screen.
“I can show you.””
Vanessa gave a short, disbelieving laugh.
“This is ridiculous. You're all treating a security camera like it's a witness in court.””
“Then let's see what it recorded,” Marcus said.
Grace tapped the screen.
The new footage appeared.
Unlike the foyer camera, the study camera showed the hallway outside the room. The timestamp read 9:17 p.m.
Vanessa appeared in the frame wearing a black silk robe over her nightdress. She looked up and down the corridor before slipping inside the study.
Marcus's expression hardened.
The video jumped forward.
At 9:28 p.m., Vanessa emerged.
She was carrying a thick manila envelope.
She looked toward the staircase, then tucked the envelope beneath her robe and hurried away.
Marcus turned toward her.
“What was in the envelope?””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“Documents.””
“What documents?””
“Personal documents.””
“From my father's study?””
“Marcus, I don't have to explain every little thing I do!””
He stared at her.
“You were sneaking around in his study after he confronted you about the family accounts.””
“I wasn't sneaking!””
“You looked down both ends of the hallway before you went in.””
“Because I wanted privacy!””
“Then why take an envelope?””
Vanessa's voice rose.
“Because he gave it to me!””
Grace looked up sharply.
“No, ma'am.””
Vanessa froze.
Grace's hands were shaking, but she continued.
“Mr. Whitmore wasn't home when you went into the study. He had dinner with his attorney downtown.””
Marcus looked at his wife.
“Is that true?””
Vanessa's eyes flickered toward the front doors.
“I don't remember.””
“You don't remember whether you took an envelope from my father's office?””
“I was upset last night!””
“That's not an answer.””
She stepped toward him.
“Why are you interrogating me? I'm pregnant, Marcus. I fell on the floor this morning. Your father attacked me, and now you're acting as if I'm the one on trial!””
Marcus closed his eyes briefly.
When he opened them, the anger in his face had given way to something worse.
Disappointment.
“Grace,” he said, “can you check whether Dad's study was opened after that?””
Grace nodded.
She tapped through several clips, her thumb moving rapidly across the screen.
Then she stopped.
“There's another recording.””
She turned the phone toward Marcus.
The camera showed the study doorway from a different angle. At 9:29 p.m., Vanessa returned.
This time, she didn't enter the room.
She stood in the hallway and spoke on her phone.
The microphone caught only fragments, but the words were clear enough.
“No, I have it.””
A pause.
“He doesn't know yet.””
Another pause.
Then Vanessa's voice, low and urgent.
“Once Marcus believes me, Robert won't be a problem anymore.””
Marcus went utterly still.
Vanessa lunged toward the phone.
“Turn that off!””
Grace pulled it away.
Marcus caught Vanessa's wrist before she could reach it.
“Don't.””
She stared at his hand.
“Let go of me.””
“Who were you talking to?””
“Nobody!””
“Who were you talking to?””
“I don't remember!””
“Then why did you say Robert wouldn't be a problem anymore?””
Vanessa jerked her arm free.
“Because he has been making our lives miserable!””
“Your lives?””
“Yes! Mine and yours!””
Marcus looked stunned.
“You've been telling me for months that you want me to have a better relationship with my father.””
“Because I do!””
“Then why are you planning to get rid of him?””
“I didn't mean it that way!””
“How did you mean it?””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
For the first time since their wedding, she had no convincing answer ready.
Marcus turned away and paced toward the windows.
His father had raised him alone after his mother's death when Marcus was twenty-four. Robert had worked through the grief, kept the business running, and made sure his son never had to worry about money or the family's future.
He could be demanding.
He could be stubborn.
He could turn a simple disagreement into an hour-long lecture about responsibility.
But he had never been cruel to Marcus.
And he had never been careless with his family.
Marcus had repaid that devotion with a fist to his father's face.
The thought made him sick.
He pressed both hands against the window frame.
“God,” he whispered.
Vanessa approached him cautiously.
“Marcus, baby, listen to me.””
He didn't turn around.
“Don't call me that.””
She stopped.
“Please.””
“Tell me the truth.””
“I am telling you the truth.””
“No. You're telling me whatever you think will make me stop asking questions.””
He turned to face her.
“Did you take something from my father's study?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“I took a document.””
“What document?””
“A financial statement.””
“Why?””
“Because I wanted to understand why he was moving money around.””
Marcus stared at her.
“That's a lie. You had access to the household accounts.””
“I wanted to know what he was planning.””
“And the phone call?””
“I was angry!””
“You said Robert wouldn't be a problem anymore.””
“Because I thought you would finally stand up to him!””
Marcus shook his head slowly.
“You made me believe he had attacked you.””
“I was scared!””
“You looked at the camera before you fell.””
“I told you I don't remember!””
“You screamed that he pushed you before he could even reach you!””
Vanessa slapped him.
The sound cracked through the foyer.
Grace gasped.
Marcus stood motionless, his cheek reddening.
Vanessa stared at her own hand as if she hadn't expected it to move.
Then she lifted her chin.
“Don't you dare speak to me like I'm some criminal.””
Marcus slowly touched his cheek.
“You just hit me.””
“You deserved it.””
He looked at her for a long moment.
Then he said something that made her blood turn cold.
“I'm calling my father.””
Vanessa grabbed his arm.
“No!””
Marcus looked down at her hand.
“Let go.””
“Please, Marcus. Don't do this.””
“Why?””
“Because he'll turn you against me!””
“He doesn't have to. You're doing that yourself.””
Her fingers loosened.
Marcus pulled out his phone.
Vanessa watched him search for his father's number.
She knew Robert would answer. He always answered when Marcus called, no matter how busy he was.
And once Robert heard the truth, he would never forgive her.
She couldn't let that happen.
“Marcus,” she whispered, “think about the baby.””
He paused.
She seized the moment.
“Whatever you think you saw, I am still the mother of your child. If you destroy our marriage over a misunderstanding, our baby will grow up in a broken home.””
Marcus's eyes darkened.
“Don't use our child to make me ignore what you did.””
“I'm not!””
“Then stop.””
He pressed the call button.
Vanessa lunged for the phone.
Marcus stepped back.
The call connected.
“Marcus?”” Robert's voice came through the speaker.
“What is it?””
Marcus swallowed hard.
“Dad, I need to talk to you.””
“Is Vanessa all right?””
The question nearly broke him.
Robert had been punched, humiliated, and thrown out of his own home, yet his first concern was still the woman who had accused him.
Marcus's eyes filled with tears.
“Dad, I'm sorry.””
A long silence followed.
Then Robert answered quietly.
“For what?””
Marcus couldn't speak.
Vanessa stared at him, silently begging him to end the call.
Finally, Marcus forced the words out.
“I saw the footage.””
Another silence.
Robert's breathing sounded faintly through the phone.
“And?””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“And I was wrong.””
Robert said nothing.
“Dad, I shouldn't have touched you. I shouldn't have believed something without asking you what happened. I—”
“Marcus.””
His father's voice was gentle, which somehow made everything worse.
“Is Vanessa there?””
“Yes.””
“Put me on speaker.””
Marcus did.
Robert's voice filled the foyer.
“Vanessa, I want you to listen carefully. I'm not going to argue with you. I'm not going to threaten you. But I will not allow you to turn my son against me with lies.””
Vanessa pressed her lips together.
Robert continued.
“Tomorrow morning, my attorney will contact Marcus about the family trust. Until then, nobody is to move money, destroy documents, or interfere with the security system.””
Vanessa's eyes widened.
“What does that mean?”” she demanded.
“It means the accounts are being reviewed.””
“You can't do that!””
“I can, and I will.””
“You're trying to take everything away from me!””
Robert's voice hardened.
“No, Vanessa. I'm trying to find out what you've already taken.””
Marcus looked at Grace's phone.
The envelope.
The late-night call.
The words about making Robert disappear from their lives.
Suddenly, the pieces seemed connected.
“Dad,” Marcus said, “what was in the envelope?””
Robert paused.
“What envelope?””
Marcus explained what the footage had shown.
For several seconds, the only sound was the fountain outside.
Then Robert spoke.
“There was a confidential document in my study last night. A document my attorney delivered yesterday afternoon.””
Vanessa backed away.
Robert's next words were measured, almost painfully calm.
“It concerns the future ownership of Whitmore Holdings.””
Marcus frowned.
“I thought that was already settled.””
“It was.””
“Then what changed?””
Robert took a breath.
“I was preparing to transfer a significant portion of my voting shares into a protected trust for my grandchild. The paperwork required one final signature.””
Marcus glanced at Vanessa's belly.
Robert continued.
“Before I signed, I discovered that someone had tried to access the preliminary documents without authorization.””
Marcus's eyes moved slowly toward his wife.
“Who?””
“I don't know yet,” Robert replied.
“But the document was not where I left it this morning.””
Vanessa's face had gone white.
Marcus looked at her.
“Did you take the ownership papers?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
But her voice was so faint that it barely reached him.
Robert spoke again.
“Marcus, there's one more thing.””
“What?””
“The document contains a clause that becomes active if I determine that someone has attempted to defraud the family trust.””
Marcus frowned.
“What kind of clause?””
“A clause protecting the child's inheritance from any adult who tries to manipulate or steal it.””
Vanessa stopped breathing.
Robert continued.
“If the evidence supports what I'm beginning to suspect, the person responsible could lose access to every benefit connected to that trust.””
Vanessa's hands flew to her belly.
“No,” she whispered.
Marcus stared at her.
“What are you afraid of?””
“Nothing.””
“Then why are you shaking?””
She backed toward the staircase.
“I need to lie down.””
“Vanessa, stay here.””
“I said I need to lie down!””
She hurried up the stairs, gripping the railing so tightly that her knuckles turned white.
Marcus made no attempt to follow her.
He stood in the foyer, holding his phone, listening to his father's quiet breathing.
“Dad,” he whispered, “what do I do now?””
Robert was silent for a moment.
Then he answered.
“First, get your wife and the baby checked by a doctor. Whatever else is happening, that child deserves proper care.””
Marcus nodded, though his father couldn't see him.
“And after that?””
“After that, we find out the truth.””
The call ended.
Grace lowered her phone.
Marcus looked at her.
“Can you send me everything you saved?””
“Of course.””
“And Grace?””
“Yes, sir?””
He swallowed.
“Thank you for protecting my father when I wasn't there to do it.””
Grace's eyes filled with tears.
“I only told the truth.””
Marcus looked toward the staircase.
For the first time, he understood that truth could be far more frightening than anger.
Upstairs, Vanessa locked herself inside the master bedroom.
She rushed to the walk-in closet, pushed aside a row of designer coats, and reached behind a stack of handbags.
Her fingers found the manila envelope.
She pulled it out and tore it open.
Inside lay the preliminary ownership documents, a printed bank transfer, and a single sheet bearing Robert's signature.
Her breathing became ragged.
The transfer was supposed to be the final piece of her plan. If she could move the money before the trust was finalized, she would have enough to secure her own future.
But now the cameras had recorded her movements.
Marcus knew about the envelope.
Robert was calling his attorney.
And the trust contained a clause she had never expected.
She grabbed her phone and called the man who had promised to help her.
He answered on the fourth ring.
“Did you get the papers?”” he asked.
Vanessa's voice trembled.
“Yes.””
“Good. Then we proceed tonight.””
“No. Everything has changed.””
“What do you mean?””
“The camera recorded me.””
The line went silent.
Then the man's voice returned, stripped of its earlier confidence.
“What exactly did it record?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Enough to destroy me.””
He exhaled sharply.
“Then you need to understand something, Vanessa. If Robert finds out who helped you, you're not the only one who loses everything.””
A chill crawled up her spine.
“What are you talking about?””
He lowered his voice.
“Look at the last page of the document.””
Vanessa unfolded the final sheet.
Her eyes moved across the printed text.
Then she saw the signature beneath the authorization clause.
Not Robert's.
Not Marcus's.
The signature belonged to the man on the phone.
Vanessa's lips parted.
“Why is your name on this?””
He didn't answer.
“Why is your name on a document from Robert's attorney?””
The line crackled.
May you like
Then he whispered five words that made her knees buckle.
“Because I'm Marcus's real father.””
