Chapter 8: The Confession That Changed Everything
Mia sat alone in the airport interview room with her hands folded on the table.
The false passport was gone. An officer had collected it along with her boarding pass and suitcase, documenting each item before placing them in separate evidence bags.
She had expected the police to treat her like a criminal.
Instead, Detective Bennett entered with a bottle of water, two cups, and a thin folder.
Mia looked up.
“Am I under arrest?””
“Not at this moment.””
“Does that mean I can leave?””
“It means we're conducting an interview. If your status changes, I'll explain it clearly.””
Mia glanced at the folder.
“Did Gregory tell you anything?””
Bennett sat opposite her.
“We've spoken with Mr. Price. He's denied any involvement in the financial transfers and the incident at Richard Hayes's home.””
Mia let out a short, bitter laugh.
“Of course he has.””
“Are you prepared to explain your role?””
Mia looked down at her bandaged hand.
“I want a lawyer.””
“That's your right. We can pause the interview while you arrange one.””
“I also want protection.””
“Protection from whom?””
“Gregory.””
Bennett waited.
Mia lifted her eyes.
“He said he knew where Daniel was. He told me not to speak to you. He said if I did, I'd be the only person who went to prison.””
“Did he threaten you directly?””
“He said I should remember what happened to Richard's wife.””
The detective became very still.
“Tell me exactly what he said.””
Mia swallowed.
“He told me that Eleanor Hayes had been warned to stay out of the company's finances. He said she ignored the warning and paid for it.””
Bennett opened her folder.
“Did he say he caused her accident?””
“No.””
“Did he tell you that he was involved in the accident?””
Mia hesitated.
“He said he was there.””
“Where?””
“On the road. The night she died.””
Bennett leaned forward.
“Did he say why?””
“He said he had been following her because she had taken something from the company.””
“What had she taken?””
“I don't know.””
“Did you ask?””
Mia's lips trembled.
“He told me not to ask questions about the past.””
Bennett closed her folder.
“Mrs. Carter, if you're telling me the truth, this is serious. But I need to understand why you're only coming forward now.””
Mia looked toward the door.
“Because I thought Gregory would protect me.””
“From what?””
“From Richard. From the police. From everything.””
“And what changed?””
“He abandoned me.””
For the first time, Mia's voice broke without any apparent calculation.
“He told me to take the blame. He said he could prove I staged the assault, but he had no reason to help me. He said I was the one who cut my hand, the one who made the accusation, the one who would be caught on camera.””
Bennett studied her.
“Did you stage the assault?””
Mia closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The word seemed to drain the room of air.
Bennett did not move.
“Did Richard Hayes threaten you?””
“No.””
“Did he assault you?””
“No.””
“Did he cut your hand?””
“No.””
Mia began to cry.
“I did it myself.””
Bennett let the silence remain.
Mia wiped her cheeks.
“I know what I did was wrong.””
“Why did you do it?””
“Because Richard was investigating the money. Gregory said if Richard found the connection to my business, everything would fall apart.””
“Were you involved in the financial transfers?””
Mia stared at the table.
“Yes.””
“How?””
“I introduced Gregory to the bank accounts connected to my design company. He told me the payments were legitimate consulting fees. At first, I believed him.””
“At first?””
Mia shook her head.
“After a while, I knew the invoices were false. I knew some of the money had come from Hayes Construction.””
“And you continued accepting it?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I had already spent some of it. Because I thought Gregory would fix the problem. Because I wanted to believe there was a way out.””
Bennett wrote something down.
“Did you receive any of the money personally?””
“Yes.””
“How much?””
“I don't know the exact amount.””
“An estimate?””
“About one hundred and eighty thousand dollars.””
“Where is it now?””
Mia's shoulders slumped.
“Some of it went into my business. Some went toward our apartment and other expenses. I transferred the rest into an account Gregory controlled.””
Bennett looked up.
“Do you have access to that account?””
“No.””
“Who does?””
“Gregory.””
“Do you know the account number?””
Mia nodded slowly.
“I can provide it.””
“Then provide it to your attorney and the financial crimes investigators.””
Mia wiped her face again.
“Will you protect Daniel?””
“We take credible threats seriously. We'll assess the information and take appropriate precautions.””
“And Richard?””
Bennett's gaze sharpened.
“You made a false accusation against him. Do you understand the consequences of that?””
Mia looked down.
“Yes.””
“Do you understand that cooperation doesn't erase your responsibility?””
“Yes.””
“Then I need you to tell me everything about the plan to frame him. Including every conversation you had with Gregory.””
Mia drew a shaky breath.
“It started three months ago.””
She described the first meeting with Gregory, the promises he made, the financial records he showed her, and the way he had convinced her that Richard was preparing to blame her for the missing money.
She described how Gregory had suggested creating a confrontation that would make Richard appear violent and unstable.
She described the knife.
The cut.
The scream.
And the words she had whispered in the kitchen.
“Let's see how you explain this to the police.””
When she finished, Bennett sat back.
“Was anyone else involved?””
Mia shook her head.
“Not in the assault.””
“That's not what I asked. Was anyone else involved in the financial scheme?””
Mia hesitated.
“There was someone who helped Gregory move the money.””
“Who?””
“I never met him. Gregory called him the auditor.””
“Do you know his real name?””
“No.””
“Did Gregory ever mention him?””
Mia stared at the wall.
Then, slowly, she reached into her handbag and removed a folded sheet of paper.
“I found this in Gregory's briefcase last week. I wasn't supposed to see it.””
Bennett accepted the paper.
It contained a list of dates, account references, and initials.
Near the bottom, one name had been underlined twice.
*O. HAYES.*
Bennett looked up.
“Who is O. Hayes?””
Mia's face had gone pale.
“Olivia Hayes.””
Richard's daughter.
Daniel's sister.
Mia shook her head quickly.
“I don't know what it means. I swear. I just saw the name.””
Bennett studied the paper.
“Why didn't you tell us about this earlier?””
“Because I didn't know whether it was important.””
“You just told me you were involved in a scheme that stole money from your husband's company. Everything connected to those transfers is important.””
Mia nodded, crying again.
“I know.””
Bennett put the paper into an evidence sleeve.
“I'm going to pause this interview while we verify the document and contact your attorney. Don't discuss the investigation with anyone else.””
Mia reached across the table.
“Please. I need you to understand something.””
Bennett stopped.
“What?””
“Gregory doesn't trust anyone. Not even me. If he thinks I told you about the money, he'll disappear.””
“Then we'll make sure the appropriate investigators know what you've told us.””
Mia's face crumpled.
“He said there was someone in the family who had been helping him from the beginning.””
“Who?””
“I don't know.””
She looked up.
“But he said that if Richard ever discovered the truth, it wouldn't just destroy the company.””
Her voice dropped to a whisper.
“It would destroy the family.””
Across Boston, Olivia Hayes was sitting in her car outside the company's headquarters when her phone rang.
She almost ignored it.
She had spent the morning fielding calls from employees who wanted to know whether Richard had been arrested, whether Daniel was taking over the company, and whether the board should schedule an emergency meeting.
She was exhausted.
When she saw the caller ID, she answered.
“Daniel?””
“Where are you?””
“At the office. Why?””
“Are you alone?””
Olivia frowned.
“Yes. What's wrong?””
Daniel took a breath.
“The police found something in Mia's possession. A document with your initials on it.””
Silence.
Then Olivia said, “What kind of document?””
“Financial records connected to Gregory.””
Her grip tightened around the steering wheel.
“Daniel, listen to me. I need you to come to the house.””
“Why?””
“Not over the phone.””
“Olivia, what do you know?””
She looked at the glass entrance of the headquarters.
For seven years, she had kept a promise she made to her mother.
She had told herself she was protecting the family.
She had told herself that the truth would only hurt Richard.
But now Richard had been framed, Daniel was receiving threats, and Gregory was preparing to disappear.
She couldn't keep pretending that silence was the same thing as loyalty.
“There's something I should have told you a long time ago,” Olivia said.
Daniel's voice hardened.
“What is it?””
“It's about Mom.””
“Everyone keeps saying that. Just tell me.””
Olivia closed her eyes.
“Gregory didn't just follow her the night she died.””
Daniel stopped breathing.
“What are you saying?””
“He called me afterward.””
Daniel's hand tightened around the phone.
“You were sixteen.””
“I know.””
“What did he tell you?””
Olivia's voice shook.
“He said Mom had been asking questions about the company's money. He said she'd found something she wasn't supposed to find.””
Daniel could barely speak.
“Why didn't you tell Dad?””
“Because Gregory told me that if I did, the company would collapse. He said Dad would lose everything. He said people would blame me because I'd helped Mom access some of the records.””
Daniel stood in the police station corridor, staring at the wall.
“What records?””
Olivia began to cry.
“Daniel, I gave Mom the password to a restricted accounting folder. I didn't know what was in it. I thought she was checking a contract.””
“And Gregory found out?””
“Yes.””
“What happened next?””
“He came to the house two days after the accident. He told me he had been the last person to speak to Mom before she crashed.””
Daniel felt sick.
“Did he say he caused the accident?””
“No. He said he couldn't stop what happened.””
“Those are not the same thing.””
“I know.””
“Then why did you keep quiet?””
Olivia's sob became louder.
“Because he showed me a photograph.””
Daniel went still.
“What photograph?””
“A picture of Mom's car on the road. Taken before the ambulance arrived.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“He said if I told anyone about the accounting records, he'd tell the police that Mom had stolen company documents and caused the accident herself.””
“That's insane.””
“I was sixteen, Daniel. I was terrified. Dad was barely functioning. I thought if I stayed quiet, everything would eventually go away.””
“And did it?””
“No.””
Daniel looked toward the interview room where Mia was being questioned.
For years, he had believed his sister's grief was different from his own because she had been younger when their mother died.
Now he understood that Olivia had been carrying a secret of her own.
“Where are you?”” he asked.
“At the office.””
“Stay there. Don't leave until I get to you.””
“Daniel, there's more.””
He closed his eyes.
“What?””
Olivia whispered the words that would change the investigation completely.
“Gregory told me Mom had hidden the original financial records somewhere in the house.””
Daniel thought of the safe in the sewing room.
The notebook.
The digital drive.
The note about the money.
He swallowed.
“Olivia, I found them.””
“What?””
“I found Mom's notebook.””
Her breath caught.
“Then you need to look at the last page. The one with the initials.””
Daniel froze.
“What initials?””
Olivia was crying so hard that he could barely understand her.
“Mom wrote down the name of the person Gregory was paying inside the family.””
Daniel opened the photograph he had taken of the notebook.
He scrolled to the final entry.
At the bottom of the page, beneath the Swiss bank account number, Eleanor had written a name.
Not Gregory's.
Not Mia's.
Not Olivia's.
*Daniel Hayes.*
For a moment, the station corridor seemed to tilt beneath his feet.
His mother had written his name beside the account.
His electronic signature had appeared on the transfers.
And someone had threatened him the moment he opened the safe.
Daniel stared at the handwriting.
Then Olivia whispered through the phone.
“Daniel, Mom believed someone had been using your identity before she died.””
He looked up.
“Who?””
May you like
Olivia's answer came in a voice so quiet he almost missed it.
“She thought Gregory had been preparing to frame you for years.””
