Chapter 1: The Perfect Crime

“You can tell the police whatever you want, Richard. By tomorrow morning, everyone will believe you tried to kill your own son.””

Mia Carter whispered those words in her father-in-law’s kitchen while she slid a bloodstained knife into his hand.

Richard Hayes stared at her, stunned.

Above them, hidden inside a smoke detector near the ceiling, a tiny red light blinked once.

Mia never looked up.

She had spent three months planning the perfect crime.

And the one person she intended to destroy was the only man in the family who had ever truly loved her.

The rain had started before sunset, tapping against the tall windows of the Hayes family estate outside Boston. Wind rattled the bare branches of the maple trees, and headlights swept across the polished marble floor whenever a car passed the security gate.

Inside, the house smelled of expensive candles, fresh coffee, and the roast chicken Richard had insisted on preparing himself.

At sixty-eight, Richard Hayes still cooked Sunday dinner for his family every week.

He had built a successful construction company from nothing, raised two children after his wife died, and spent decades earning a reputation as a man whose word meant more than any contract.

But tonight, the dining room sat empty.

His son, Daniel, was upstairs recovering from a difficult week at work. His daughter, Olivia, had canceled at the last minute. And Mia, Daniel’s wife of four years, had volunteered to help Richard clean the kitchen.

She had even brought him a bottle of his favorite whiskey.

That should have been Richard’s first warning.

“Mia, you don't have to stay,” Richard said, placing two plates in the sink.

“Daniel will be disappointed if you don't go upstairs and spend some time with him.””

Mia smiled.

“He needs his rest. You know how stressed he's been.””

“Stressed?”” Richard turned off the faucet.

“He's thirty-five years old, running half my company, and acting as though the world will end if he misses one meeting.””

“He's trying to impress you.””

Richard dried his hands with a towel.

“He doesn't need to impress me. He's my son.””

For a fraction of a second, Mia's smile disappeared.

There it was again.

That effortless tenderness Richard reserved for Daniel.

The kind of love Mia had spent her entire life trying to earn from people who were supposed to give it freely.

Her mother had favored her younger sister. Her father had disappeared when she was eleven. At school, she learned that beauty could open doors, charm could keep them open, and vulnerability could persuade people to hold them for her.

By twenty-nine, Mia had become exceptionally good at making people believe they were the most important person in the room.

Daniel had fallen for it.

Richard never had.

He was polite to her. He paid for family vacations, gave her generous birthday gifts, and welcomed her into the house. But he watched her with the cautious attention of a man examining a crack in a foundation.

Six months ago, she had overheard him telling Daniel that something about the company's finances didn't feel right.

Three months ago, he had quietly asked their accountant to review several transactions connected to Mia's design business.

Two weeks ago, Richard had confronted her in his study.

And tonight, she was going to make him regret it.

“Richard,” she said softly, “can I ask you something?””

“Of course.””

“Do you think I'm a bad person?””

He looked surprised.

“What kind of question is that?””

“A serious one.””

Richard leaned against the counter.

“I think people make mistakes. What matters is whether they're willing to admit them.””

Mia lowered her eyes.

“And if someone doesn't?””

“Then eventually, the truth catches up with them.””

The silence that followed seemed to stretch across the kitchen.

Mia looked toward the staircase.

“That's what I was afraid you'd say.””

Richard straightened.

“Mia, what is this about?””

She reached into her handbag and pulled out a folded document.

It was a bank statement bearing the name of Hayes Construction.

Richard recognized the account number immediately.

“Where did you get that?””

“Daniel showed it to me.””

“No, he didn't.””

“He did.””

Richard took the paper from her.

His expression changed as he read the figures. Nearly four hundred thousand dollars had been transferred out of a company reserve account over the preceding six weeks.

“What the hell is this?””

Mia watched him carefully.

“You tell me.””

Richard examined the statement again.

“This isn't an authorized account transfer.””

“That's what I thought.””

“Who gave you this?””

Mia took a breath, as though she were struggling to tell him something painful.

“I know you've been investigating my business.””

Richard's eyes lifted.

“Who told you that?””

“Does it matter?””

“Yes, it matters. Did you access company records?””

“Why would I need to? You've made it perfectly clear that you don't trust me.””

“Mia, answer the question.””

She stepped backward.

For the first time that evening, her face showed something that looked like fear.

“I didn't steal anything from you.””

“I never said you did.””

“You think I did.””

“I think someone moved money from an account without authorization, and I'm trying to find out who.””

“Of course you are.”” Her voice cracked.

“Because if you can blame me, you can finally convince Daniel that I was never good enough for your family.””

Richard stared at her.

“This has nothing to do with whether you're good enough.””

“You've never liked me!””

“That isn't true.””

“You look at me like I'm some gold digger who married your son for his money.””

Richard put the statement on the counter.

“If you have nothing to hide, then cooperate with the investigation. That's all I'm asking.””

Mia's tears appeared almost instantly.

It was a talent she had perfected long before she met Daniel.

“You know what?”” she whispered.

“I really thought you were different from the rest of them.””

She turned toward the door.

Richard reached out, not touching her, but trying to stop her from leaving in the middle of the conversation.

“Mia, wait.””

She spun around.

“Don't touch me!””

Richard froze.

“I wasn't going to.””

“You always do this. You push people until they have nowhere to go, then pretend you're the reasonable one.””

“Mia, lower your voice. Daniel is sleeping.””

She gave a bitter laugh.

“Of course. We can't upset Daniel.””

Richard's jaw tightened.

“I will not have you shouting in my house.””

“Your house?”” she repeated.

“Everything is yours, isn't it? The house. The company.

The money. Even Daniel's future.””

“That's enough.””

“No, Richard. It isn't.””

For a moment, her anger seemed so convincing that even Richard hesitated.

Then she looked at the ceiling.

Not directly at the smoke detector.

Just toward the corner where the wall met the ceiling, as if she were searching for the time.

The small black lens inside the device continued recording.

Richard had installed the cameras after a break-in at the estate the previous winter. Most were visible, mounted near doors and hallways. A handful of discreet devices had been added by the security company to cover blind spots.

Only Richard and his head of security knew exactly where they were.

Mia had noticed the visible cameras.

She had never discovered the others.

“I'm going upstairs,” she announced.

Richard nodded toward the door.

“Good. We can discuss this tomorrow when everyone is calmer.””

But Mia didn't leave.

Instead, she walked to the kitchen island and picked up a knife from the wooden block.

Richard's eyes narrowed.

“What are you doing?””

“I'm trying to understand something.””

She held the knife by its handle.

“Why are you so determined to ruin my life?””

“Put that down.””

“Did you tell Daniel about the investigation?””

“Yes.””

Her eyes flashed.

“You did?””

“He has a right to know what's happening inside his company.””

Mia's breathing grew uneven.

For the first time, something real slipped through her carefully constructed performance.

Fear.

Not fear of Richard.

Fear of what he might discover.

She placed the knife on the island, then reached into her handbag again.

This time, she pulled out a small plastic packet.

Richard frowned.

“What is that?””

“Something you shouldn't have found.””

Before he could move, Mia stepped closer and deliberately pressed the blade against the palm of her own left hand.

Richard lunged forward.

“Mia! Stop!””

She gasped, and a thin line of blood appeared across her skin.

Then she screamed.

The sound tore through the quiet house.

Daniel appeared at the kitchen doorway seconds later, his shirt untucked and his face pale with alarm.

“What happened?””

Mia stumbled backward, clutching her bleeding hand.

“Daniel!””

He rushed toward her.

Richard held up both hands.

“She cut herself. I was trying to stop her.””

Daniel looked from his father to his wife.

Mia shook her head violently.

“No. No, that's not what happened.””

“Mia,” Richard said, “tell him the truth.””

She stared at Daniel as though she could barely speak.

“He found out about the money.””

Daniel went still.

“What money?””

Richard turned toward his son.

“Daniel, listen to me. She came downstairs with a statement showing unauthorized transfers. I asked her where she got it, and—”

“He threatened me!”” Mia cried.

Daniel's eyes widened.

“What?””

“He said he'd make sure I lost everything if I didn't stay quiet.””

“That's a lie!”” Richard snapped.

Mia flinched dramatically.

Daniel stepped between them.

“Dad, what the hell is going on?””

Richard looked at his son, searching his face for the trust they had shared for thirty-five years.

“Someone is stealing from the company. I think your wife knows more than she's telling us.””

Mia let out a broken sob.

“You see? This is exactly what he does!””

Daniel turned to her.

“Show me your hand.””

She opened her fingers.

Blood glistened on her palm.

Daniel's expression hardened as he looked at his father.

“Did you do this?””

Richard seemed unable to process the question.

“Daniel, I have never laid a hand on your wife.””

“He was trying to take the knife away,” Mia whispered.

“I tried to get past him, and he grabbed my wrist.””

It was a small alteration.

A carefully chosen lie built around a fragment of truth.

Richard had reached for her.

She had cut herself.

And now she had given Daniel a story he could believe.

Daniel took Mia's uninjured hand.

“We're going to the hospital.””

“Don't leave me here with him,” she whispered.

“I won't.””

Richard watched them move toward the hallway.

“Daniel, wait.””

His son stopped but didn't turn around.

“I love you,” Richard said quietly.

“You know me.””

Daniel's shoulders stiffened.

“I don't know what to believe right now.””

Then he walked away.

The sound of their footsteps faded up the stairs.

Richard remained alone in the kitchen.

A moment later, the knife slipped from the edge of the island and struck the floor.

He stared at it.

Then at the blood on the marble.

He hadn't touched the blade.

He hadn't cut Mia.

But within minutes, his son had looked at him as though he were a stranger.

Upstairs, a door slammed.

Richard sank into a chair and covered his face with both hands.

He had survived bankruptcy, lawsuits, the death of his wife, and the brutal years of building a business from nothing.

He had never imagined that the worst thing anyone could do to him would be to make his own child doubt him.

Across the kitchen, the smoke detector's tiny red light blinked again.

The recording continued.

At 11:47 p.m., a notification appeared on Richard's phone.

*ESTATE SECURITY: MOTION EVENT SAVED — KITCHEN CAMERA 07.*

Richard didn't see it.

He was still staring at the blood.

And upstairs, while Daniel wrapped Mia's hand in a clean towel, she was already planning what to say to the police.

She believed she had won.

She believed Richard's reputation would collapse before sunrise.

She believed the only witness to her crime was the man she had framed.

But there was something Mia didn't know.

The camera above her head had recorded every second.

Including the moment she cut herself.

Including the moment Richard reached for her.

May you like

And including the moment she looked directly toward the ceiling and whispered something she thought no one would ever hear.

Something that would destroy her entire story.
