Chapter 6: The Brother Who Came Back from the Dead

Nina stood in the dark garage with Marcus's hand gripping her wrist.

Outside, Darius knocked on the front door again.

“Nina! I know you're in there.””

Marcus released her and pointed toward a narrow utility closet beside the washing machine.

“Hide the key,” he whispered.

“And don't tell him you saw me.””

Nina shook her head.

“I am done lying for your family.””

Marcus looked at her with exhausted eyes.

“You think I want you to lie? I'm trying to keep you alive.””

“You've been gone for eight years. You don't get to walk into my house and tell me what to do.””

He flinched.

For a moment, she saw the young man she remembered from before the wedding, the one who had brought her coffee when she was studying for a professional certification and teased Darius about being too cheap to buy decent champagne.

Then the expression disappeared.

“Fair enough,” Marcus said quietly.

“But if Darius sees me before we're ready, we may never get the chance to explain anything.””

The front door rattled.

“Nina!””

She took a deep breath and walked into the hallway.

Marcus disappeared into the utility closet.

Nina unlocked the front door but left the chain in place.

Darius stood on the porch, his shirt untucked, his hair disheveled. He looked like a man who hadn't slept in days.

“Baby, thank God.””

“Don't call me that.””

His face tightened.

“Can we talk?””

“About what? Your missing brother? The forged signatures? The money you stole from our savings?””

Darius glanced over her shoulder.

“Can I come inside?””

“No.””

“Nina, please. I need to explain what happened.””

“You've had eight years to explain.””

He went still.

“Who told you about Marcus?””

“My mother.””

Darius looked genuinely startled.

“Your mother?””

“She left a letter. She said Marcus discovered something about your business, and you were involved.””

He gripped the doorframe.

“She didn't understand what happened.””

“Then tell me.””

Darius lowered his voice.

“Not here.””

Nina almost laughed.

“Of course. Never here. Never now. Always somewhere else, at some convenient time when you can prepare another lie.””

He closed his eyes.

“I deserve that.””

“You deserve a lot more than that.””

He nodded slowly.

“Can I at least explain the money?””

Nina considered slamming the door in his face.

Instead, she removed the chain and stepped aside.

“Five minutes.””

Darius entered and stopped in the living room.

He looked around at the photographs, the furniture, the small decorative bowl Nina had bought during their anniversary trip.

For a moment, his expression softened.

Then his eyes fell on the suitcase beside the stairs.

“You packed my things.””

“Yes.””

He swallowed.

“Are you throwing me out?””

“I'm deciding what I want to do with my life.””

“Nina, I know I hurt you.””

“You don't know the half of it.””

He sat on the edge of the sofa.

Nina remained standing.

“Start with the company,” she said.

Darius rubbed his hands together.

“Carter Family Holdings was created to manage several investments. Some of them were legitimate. Others were not.””

“Meaning?””

“I borrowed money from private investors. I promised returns I couldn't guarantee.””

“So you lied to them.””

“Yes.””

“And when the investments failed, you used our money to cover the losses.””

He nodded.

Nina felt a bitter laugh rise in her throat.

“You didn't just gamble with our marriage. You gambled with our future.””

“I was trying to keep everything from falling apart.””

“You could have told me.””

“I was ashamed.””

“Shame doesn't explain forging my signature.””

Darius looked down.

“I know.””

“And the surrogacy agreement?””

He pressed his palms against his knees.

“I thought a baby would give us something good to focus on. Something that would bring us together again.””

Nina stared at him.

“You thought bringing a child into a marriage full of secrets would fix it?””

“I wasn't thinking clearly.””

“No. You were thinking only about yourself.””

He looked up.

“I loved you then. I love you now.””

She shook her head.

“Love isn't a magic word you can use after doing something unforgivable.””

Darius's eyes filled with tears.

“I never wanted you to suffer.””

“But you were willing to let me believe I was the problem. You watched me blame my body for something I couldn't control while you were secretly arranging an entire pregnancy.””

He covered his face.

For a moment, Nina heard only his uneven breathing.

Then he whispered, “I didn't know how to stop.””

She felt the anger in her chest shift into something colder.

“You always had a choice.””

A floorboard creaked behind them.

Darius looked toward the hallway.

“What was that?””

Nina's pulse jumped.

“Nothing.””

He stood.

“Is someone here?””

“No.””

“Nina.””

“Don't.””

He took a step toward the hallway.

She moved in front of him.

“Your five minutes are almost up.””

Darius stared at her.

Then he looked past her shoulder again.

“You're hiding something.””

Nina folded her arms.

“I'm protecting myself.””

He laughed bitterly.

“From me?””

“Yes.””

The answer struck him harder than any accusation.

He stepped back.

“Fine. I'll tell you about Marcus.””

Nina's heart began to pound.

“I'm listening.””

“Eight years ago, Marcus discovered that one of our investors was using the company to move money through accounts connected to several shell businesses. He believed we were being used to cover up financial crimes.””

“Were you?””

“I didn't know at first.””

“That's not an answer.””

Darius took a breath.

“I knew some transactions were suspicious. I told myself they were legal because the investor had lawyers and accountants handling everything.””

“Who was the investor?””

He hesitated.

“Victor Hale.””

Nina had never heard the name.

“Who is he?””

“A businessman with connections to several private investment firms.””

“Is he the person who threatened you?””

Darius nodded.

“He found out Marcus had copied the financial records. He told me that if the files became public, everyone involved would go to prison.””

“Everyone?””

“Me. Marcus. Samuel Reed. Anyone whose name appeared in the transactions.””

Nina felt a chill.

“And you let Marcus disappear?””

“I didn't make him disappear.””

“Then what happened?””

Darius looked toward the window.

“Marcus came to your mother's house that night because he wanted her help. He had the evidence, and he was afraid Victor's people were following him.””

Nina swallowed.

“What happened next?””

“I went there to convince him to give me the files. We argued. He accused me of helping Victor move the money.””

“Were you?””

Darius's silence answered her.

Nina's knees weakened.

“How much?””

“I don't know the exact amount.””

“How much, Darius?””

“Several hundred thousand dollars.””

She stared at him.

He continued quickly.

“I thought I could replace it. I thought I could fix everything before anyone noticed. But Marcus wouldn't listen. He said he was going to the police.””

“And then?””

“He left your mother's house. I never saw him again.””

Nina thought of the photograph.

The bruised face.

The warning written on the back.

“Why did you tell everyone he moved to California?””

“Because Victor told me Marcus would be safer if everyone believed he had left voluntarily.””

“You believed that?””

“I wanted to believe it.””

Nina shook her head.

“You let your family think he abandoned them.””

“I was afraid.””

“And my mother helped him disappear?””

Darius nodded.

“She knew what Victor was capable of. She helped Marcus leave the country.””

Nina's chest tightened.

“Why did she never tell me?””

“Because Marcus asked her not to.””

“Why?””

Darius looked directly at her.

“Because Victor believed you had the original financial records.””

Nina felt the room go silent.

“What?””

“Marcus had copied some of the documents before the argument. He told Victor that he'd hidden them somewhere only you could find.””

“I had never seen any documents.””

“I know.””

“Then why would Victor believe I had them?””

“Because Marcus told him you were the only person he trusted.””

Nina stared at her husband.

“Did you know where the files were?””

“No.””

“Do you know now?””

Darius hesitated.

That hesitation told her everything.

“You do.””

He shook his head.

“I know what Marcus said. I don't know where he put them.””

Nina looked toward the hallway.

In the darkness behind the utility closet door, someone shifted his weight.

Darius heard it too.

He turned sharply.

“Who's there?””

Nina stepped into his path.

“Your time is up.””

“Move.””

“No.””

“Nina, move!””

His voice rose, and for the first time that evening, the gentleness vanished from his face.

She saw a man who was used to deciding when conversations ended, when truths were revealed, and when other people were allowed to speak.

Not the husband who had held her through tears.

Not the man who had promised to build a family with her.

Someone else.

Someone she had never truly known.

“You don't get to order me around anymore,” she said.

Darius stared at her.

Then the utility closet door opened.

Marcus stepped into the hallway.

Darius went completely still.

For several seconds, neither brother spoke.

Then Darius whispered, “You're dead.””

Marcus looked at him without blinking.

“That's what you told everyone.””

Darius staggered backward.

“How?””

Marcus gave a humorless smile.

“Disappointed?””

Darius's face turned pale.

He looked from Marcus to Nina, then back again.

“You've been alive this whole time?””

“Not comfortably.””

“You let us believe you were dead.””

Marcus's expression hardened.

“You let everyone believe I'd abandoned them.””

“I thought you were gone!””

“You knew what happened.””

Darius shook his head.

“You don't understand what I was dealing with.””

“I understand perfectly. You were protecting yourself.””

The brothers stood facing each other, separated by eight years of silence and the terrible things they had done to survive.

Nina watched them, her heart hammering.

“Why now?”” she asked Marcus.

“Why come back tonight?””

Marcus looked at her.

“Because I received a message this morning.””

“From whom?””

He took out his phone and showed her the screen.

The message contained a photograph of the hospital maternity ward.

Lauren was visible through the open doorway, holding the newborn.

Beneath the photograph were seven words.

*THE BABY IS THE KEY. FIND NINA.*

Nina stared at the image.

“Who sent this?””

“I don't know. But I think they know about the notebook.””

Darius suddenly lunged toward the phone.

Marcus pulled it away.

“Don't touch me!””

“Give me that!””

Nina stepped between them.

“Both of you, stop!””

They fell silent.

She looked at Marcus.

“What does the baby have to do with the notebook?””

Marcus's expression changed.

He looked at Darius, who was breathing hard.

Then he turned back to Nina.

“Because the baby isn't just connected to the surrogacy agreement.””

Nina felt her stomach tighten.

“Explain.””

Marcus hesitated.

Then he said, “Lauren's pregnancy was arranged through a clinic that Victor Hale secretly controls. The same clinic handled records connected to the financial investigation.””

Nina looked at Darius.

“Is that true?””

Darius said nothing.

Marcus continued.

“Someone used the pregnancy to move money through the company. Payments were disguised as medical expenses, agency fees, and trust deposits. The baby became part of a transaction.””

Nina felt sick.

“You're saying someone used an innocent child to hide financial crimes?””

“Yes.””

Darius shook his head.

“I didn't know they were going to use the baby that way.””

Marcus turned on him.

“You signed the documents.””

“I thought they were legitimate!””

“You didn't even read them!””

Nina raised a hand.

“Enough.””

Both men stopped.

She looked at Darius.

“Did you know the clinic was connected to Victor?””

He hesitated.

“Yes.””

“Did you know the money was being moved through the pregnancy?””

“No.””

“Did you ask questions?””

Darius looked down.

“No.””

Nina closed her eyes.

There it was again.

Not ignorance.

Not an innocent mistake.

A choice to look away because the truth might cost him something.

Marcus reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

“My mother left something else for you,” he said.

Nina took it.

It was a photocopy of an old storage receipt.

The address matched the one on the photograph.

Peachtree Storage.

Locker 214.

Across the bottom, in handwriting she recognized as her mother's, were the words:

The blue notebook is not the only thing inside.

Nina looked up.

“What else is there?””

Marcus's face tightened.

“The original trust agreement.””

Darius went white.

“No,” he whispered.

Marcus turned toward him.

“Yes.””

“You can't take her there.””

“Why not?””

Darius stepped forward.

“Because if she opens that locker, she'll learn what you did before you disappeared.””

Marcus stared at his brother.

Then, slowly, he turned to Nina.

“I didn't tell you the whole truth.””

Nina felt a fresh wave of dread.

“What did you do?””

Marcus lowered his eyes.

“The night I disappeared, I didn't just run away from Victor.””

He paused.

“I took the money.””

Darius closed his eyes.

Marcus continued.

“Every dollar I could access. The money that belonged to the investors, the money Victor was hiding, and the money Darius thought he could replace.””

Nina looked from one brother to the other.

“How much?””

Marcus's voice dropped.

“Three million dollars.””

The room seemed to shrink around her.

Darius stepped toward Marcus.

“You stole it, and now you're going to drag her into this?””

Marcus didn't move.

“I stole it to keep Victor from using it to destroy the evidence.””

“That's not what happened!””

Nina raised her voice.

“Stop!””

Both brothers fell silent.

She looked at Marcus.

“Where is the money now?””

Marcus met her eyes.

“That's what the notebook explains.””

“And the trust agreement?””

His expression darkened.

“That explains why your mother believed you were the only person who could decide what happened to it.””

Nina stared at him.

She had spent the entire day trying to understand her husband's betrayal.

Now she was discovering that her mother, his brother, and a missing accountant had all been connected to a secret worth millions.

And somehow, her name was at the center of it.

Her phone vibrated.

A new message had arrived from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of Lauren sleeping in her hospital bed, the newborn cradled beside her.

Nina's breath caught.

The message beneath it read:

*YOU HAVE UNTIL MIDNIGHT TO BRING US THE BLUE NOTEBOOK. OTHERWISE, THE BABY'S REAL PARENTS WILL BE IDENTIFIED.*

Nina looked up at Marcus.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus stared at the screen.

Then he whispered, “It means Victor knows the truth about the baby's birth.””

Darius backed away from the table.

“No,” he said.

“He can't know that.””

Nina turned toward him.

“What truth?””

Darius's lips parted, but no words came.

Marcus looked at his brother with an expression of pure disgust.

Then he faced Nina.

“The truth is that Lauren isn't the only woman who was supposed to carry that baby.””

May you like

He paused.

“And the woman who was originally chosen was you.””
