Chapter 2: The Signature That Changed Everything
For several seconds, Nina couldn't make sense of the words.
She stared at the paper in Lauren's trembling hands, trying to understand why her name appeared on a document connected to a newborn she had never seen before.
“What's that?”” Nina asked.
Lauren looked at Darius.
“Tell her.””
Darius rubbed his forehead.
“Lauren, please.””
“No.”” Lauren's voice cracked.
“You said you were going to tell her. You said you just needed a little more time.””
Nina looked between them.
“Tell me what?””
Darius stepped into the hallway and gently pulled the door almost shut behind him. He seemed desperate to keep their conversation away from the other patients.
Nina followed him outside.
“Don't you dare close that door,” she said.
“I've spent six years trusting you. You can explain yourself in front of whoever needs to hear it.””
A nurse glanced up from the station.
Darius lowered his voice.
“Nina, I know how this looks.””
She laughed bitterly.
“Then you're the only person in this hospital who doesn't.””
“Please, just listen.””
“I'm listening.””
He glanced back into the room.
“Lauren is someone I knew before I met you.””
“How convenient.””
“We weren't together when you and I started dating.””
“Congratulations. That answers a question I didn't ask.””
Darius's jaw tightened.
He looked exhausted, as though he had been carrying a burden for months. Nina might once have felt sorry for him.
Right now, she wanted the truth.
“Why is there a baby?”” she demanded.
“Why are you holding another woman's child? And why is my name on that document?””
Darius lowered his eyes.
“Because Lauren agreed to carry a baby for us.””
Nina stopped breathing.
“What?””
He took a step closer.
“After the treatments stopped working, I started looking into other options. I knew how much having a child meant to you. I wanted to find a way to give you that.””
Nina stared at him.
“You arranged a surrogate?””
“Yes.””
“Without telling me?””
“I was going to tell you.””
“When? After the baby graduated college?””
“Nina—”
“Don't.””
Her voice echoed down the hallway.
She pressed her fingers against her forehead, trying to organize the chaos in her mind.
They had discussed adoption. They had discussed fertility treatments. They had even discussed taking a break from trying because the appointments were exhausting them both.
But Darius had never mentioned surrogacy.
Never once.
“You don't get to make that decision for me,” she said.
“You don't get to choose what happens to my body, my family, or my future and then present it as a gift.””
“I was trying to help.””
“You were trying to control everything.””
Darius looked wounded.
“I thought you'd be happy.””
Nina stared at him in disbelief.
“Happy? You lied to me, Darius. You watched me cry over negative pregnancy tests while you secretly arranged to have a baby with another woman.””
“It's not like that.””
“Then explain it.””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Behind them, Lauren called his name.
“Darius, I need to know what's happening.””
He turned toward the room.
Nina stepped in front of him.
“No. You don't get to keep running between us like we're two separate problems to manage. If this woman carried a child for our family, she deserves the truth. And so do I.””
Lauren had begun crying again.
She held the baby close, supporting his tiny head with one hand.
“He told me you were involved,” she said.
Nina slowly turned toward her.
“What exactly did he tell you?””
Lauren wiped her cheek.
“He said you were struggling with the treatments and that talking about another option made you feel like you'd failed. He said you wanted him to handle the arrangements privately until everything was ready.””
Nina shook her head.
“I never said that.””
Lauren's expression crumpled.
“He said you knew I was pregnant.””
“No.””
“He said you'd agreed to the arrangement.””
“No.””
Lauren looked down at the baby.
For the first time, Nina saw the full extent of the woman's exhaustion. There were dark circles beneath her eyes, and her hospital gown was wrinkled. A plastic cup of water sat untouched on the bedside table.
She wasn't smiling anymore.
She wasn't acting like a woman who had won something from Nina.
She looked like someone who had discovered she had been lied to.
“Darius,” Lauren whispered, “you told me she wanted this baby.””
“I do want a child,” Nina said, her voice breaking.
“But I never agreed to any of this.””
Lauren looked at her.
“Then why did he ask me to sign those papers?””
Darius moved toward the bed.
“Lauren, you're tired. You just gave birth. We can discuss this later.””
“No!”” Lauren clutched the document to her chest.
“You told me everything was legal. You told me Nina was waiting at home for us to bring him back.””
Nina felt the floor disappear beneath her.
“Bring him back?””
Lauren nodded through her tears.
“He said the three of us would raise the baby together. That you'd be his mother, and I'd be able to visit whenever we agreed. He said we'd already decided everything.””
Nina stared at Darius.
“Is that what you told her?””
Darius said nothing.
“Look at me.””
He raised his eyes.
“Did you tell her I agreed to this?””
“Yes,” he admitted.
The word landed like a slap.
Nina took a shaky breath.
“Why?””
Darius looked away.
“Because I thought if you saw him, if you held him, everything would make sense. I thought you'd fall in love with him immediately, and then we'd figure out the rest.””
“You gambled with my consent.””
“I made a mistake.””
“No. A mistake is forgetting an appointment. You built an entire life around a lie.””
A nurse approached the doorway.
“Is everything all right in here?””
Lauren quickly wiped her face.
“No,” she said.
“It isn't.””
The nurse looked at Darius.
“Sir, perhaps you should step outside while we give the patient some time.””
Darius hesitated.
Nina pointed toward the hallway.
“Go.””
For a moment, she thought he might argue.
Instead, he picked up his jacket and walked out.
The door closed behind him.
The silence that followed was almost unbearable.
Lauren looked down at the newborn.
“He doesn't deserve this,” she whispered.
Nina's anger faltered.
“No,” she said softly.
“He doesn't.””
She moved toward the chair beside the bed, then stopped.
“May I sit?””
Lauren nodded.
Nina sat carefully, keeping a little distance between them.
For several moments, neither woman spoke.
Then the baby opened his eyes.
They were dark, unfocused, and impossibly small.
He made a tiny sound and curled his fingers around the edge of the blanket.
Nina felt a familiar ache rise in her chest.
She had imagined holding her own baby a thousand times. She had imagined the weight of a newborn against her arms, the warmth of a tiny cheek, the fear of doing everything wrong.
But she had never imagined arriving at the moment this way.
“I didn't know,” Nina whispered.
Lauren nodded.
“I believe you.””
Those three words nearly broke her.
Nina looked at the document.
“Can I see it?””
Lauren handed it over.
The agreement was several pages long. It contained medical information, payment terms, references to a fertility clinic, and a section describing the intended parents' responsibilities.
Nina scanned the pages.
There was her name.
Her full legal name.
Her address.
And what appeared to be her signature.
But she hadn't signed it.
She knew her own handwriting. She knew the way she crossed the letter T in Carter, how she pressed too hard when writing her first name, and how the final stroke of her signature curved upward.
The signature on the document looked almost identical.
Almost.
Nina leaned closer.
“Where did you get this?””
“The agency emailed it to me,” Lauren said.
“Darius said you had already signed your copy.””
“Did you ever speak to me directly?””
“No. He said you preferred not to be involved because of your anxiety.””
Nina's stomach twisted.
Darius had taken something deeply personal about her life and turned it into an excuse to keep two women apart.
She checked the dates.
The agreement had been prepared four months earlier.
A week before that, Darius had taken her to dinner at their favorite Italian restaurant and told her he had finally accepted that they might never have children.
He had held her hand across the table.
He had cried.
Nina remembered it clearly because it was the first time she had seen him cry about their infertility.
Now she wondered whether those tears had been real.
“Did you pay him?”” she asked.
Lauren frowned.
“What?””
“Was there money involved outside the agency?””
Lauren hesitated.
“Darius told me he was paying for the medical expenses. He also said there would be a separate fund for the baby's future.””
“How much?””
“I don't know the total. But he asked me to sign a receipt for a transfer last week.””
Nina looked up sharply.
“What transfer?””
“Thirty thousand dollars.””
Nina's fingers went cold.
Their joint savings account had been short by almost that exact amount when she checked it two weeks earlier.
Darius had told her the bank had placed a temporary hold on one of their investment transfers.
She had believed him.
“Did the money go into your account?””
Lauren shook her head.
“No. He said it had to go through a family trust.””
“What family trust?””
“I don't know. He said he was handling it.””
Nina looked down at the document again.
There was a company name near the bottom of the page: Carter Family Holdings, LLC.
She had never heard of it.
“What is this?”” she whispered.
Lauren leaned forward.
“Darius told me it was the account where the baby’s expenses would be managed.””
Nina photographed every page with her phone.
Then she called Darius.
He answered almost immediately.
“Nina, thank God. Are you ready to talk?””
“Who is Carter Family Holdings?””
Silence.
She could hear traffic in the background.
“What did you say?””
“Carter Family Holdings. The company listed on the surrogacy agreement. Why did thirty thousand dollars disappear from our joint savings account?””
Darius exhaled.
“I can explain the money.””
“That's not what I asked.””
“It's a temporary investment.””
“An investment in what?””
He lowered his voice.
“Nina, not over the phone.””
She closed her eyes.
“You used our savings to finance this arrangement without my permission, and you forged my signature. Is there anything else I should know?””
“Don't use words like that until you understand what happened.””
“Did you forge my signature?””
Another silence.
Then he said, “I did what I thought was necessary.””
Nina's heart pounded.
“You just admitted it.””
“I didn't mean to hurt you.””
“But you did.””
“I love you.””
She looked at Lauren, who was listening with tears running down her cheeks.
Nina swallowed.
“Then you should have trusted me enough to tell me the truth.””
She ended the call.
For the first time since entering the hospital, she felt something stronger than shock.
She felt clarity.
She turned to Lauren.
“I'm not going to take this baby away from you,” Nina said.
“I don't even know what the legal situation is yet. But I won't let him make decisions for either of us anymore.””
Lauren pressed the newborn against her chest.
“Thank you.””
Nina stood and walked toward the door.
Before she left, Lauren spoke again.
“Nina?””
She turned.
“There's something else.””
Nina waited.
Lauren looked frightened.
“Last night, before I went into labor, Darius received a phone call. He stepped into the hallway, but I heard him arguing with someone.””
“Who?””
“I don't know. He kept saying the money had to be moved before the baby was born.””
Nina's throat tightened.
“What money?””
Lauren shook her head.
“He said if the transfer wasn't completed, someone would tell you everything.””
Nina gripped the doorframe.
“Everything about what?””
Lauren looked at the sleeping baby.
May you like
Then she whispered the words that changed the entire situation.
“He said the baby wasn't the only reason you were supposed to come to the hospital.””
