Chapter 4: The Woman Behind the Voice

"Before you announce the winner, Thomas, I believe everyone deserves to know who actually owns that dress.""

The woman's voice echoed through the ballroom.

Nobody moved.

I stood beneath the spotlight, one hand gripping the microphone, the other resting against the emerald fabric at my waist.

The giant screen remained black.

Then a narrow beam of light illuminated the backstage entrance.

A woman stepped forward.

She was wearing a simple black dress, a long gray coat, and a pair of worn leather shoes. Her silver hair fell loosely around her shoulders. She carried a brown leather folder against her chest.

She looked nothing like the glamorous guests surrounding her.

But the moment Eleanor Whitmore saw her, she stood completely still.

"Margaret?""

The woman smiled faintly.

"Hello, Eleanor.""

A murmur traveled through the audience.

Richard Cole's face lost its color.

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

"Dad, who is that?""

He didn't answer.

The woman walked toward the stage.

Thomas Blake lowered his microphone.

"Mrs. Hayes, we weren't expecting you to arrive tonight.""

"Clearly," Margaret replied.

"Otherwise, your committee might have prepared the correct announcement.""

Eleanor descended one step from the judges' platform.

"Margaret, is it really you?""

"Yes. And I apologize for arriving so late.""

Eleanor stared at her.

"I thought you had retired.""

"I did.""

"Then why are you here?""

Margaret looked directly at me.

"Because someone has been using my work without permission.""

I felt a strange chill.

My fingers moved instinctively toward the peacock brooch.

Margaret climbed onto the stage.

She stopped in front of my gown.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she gently touched one of the embroidered feathers.

"Your mother would have loved what you've done with this.""

My throat tightened.

"You knew my mother?""

Margaret nodded.

"Very well.""

I stared at her.

"My mother was a seamstress in Queens.""

"She was much more than that.""

Margaret opened her leather folder.

"Her name was Anna Bennett. Twenty-nine years ago, she worked with me in a small design studio in London.""

The room seemed to tilt.

My mother had rarely spoken about London.

I knew she had worked in fashion before returning to America, but she always described it as a short period of her life.

"She never told me," I whispered.

Margaret's eyes softened.

"She probably wanted you to discover your own path.""

Behind us, Vanessa suddenly laughed.

"Oh, this is absurd.""

Everyone turned.

She stood beside the front row, her arms crossed.

"Are we seriously going to interrupt an international fashion competition because somebody claims to know Maya's mother?""

Richard pulled her down by the elbow.

"Vanessa, stop.""

But she ignored him.

"Margaret Hayes retired years ago. Her company disappeared. Why should anyone believe what she says?""

Margaret turned slowly.

"Because I brought the documents.""

She placed the folder on the table beside Thomas.

"And because your father knows exactly who I am.""

Richard's jaw tightened.

"Margaret, this isn't the appropriate place.""

"You're right, Richard. It isn't. But apparently, your daughter has decided that public humiliation is an acceptable part of business.""

Vanessa's cheeks flushed.

"Don't talk about my father.""

Margaret ignored her.

She opened the folder and removed several photographs.

The first showed two young women standing beside a sewing table.

One was Margaret.

The other was my mother.

I recognized her immediately.

Her dark hair was tied back, and she wore the same little silver earrings she had kept until the day she died.

She was laughing.

Not the quiet smile I remembered from the last years of her life.

A full, carefree laugh.

I touched the photograph.

"That's Mom.""

"Yes," Margaret said.

She removed another picture.

It showed a collection of gowns hanging in a London studio.

At the center was a dramatic emerald dress with a sculpted bodice and a sweeping peacock-feather train.

My breath caught.

It looked almost exactly like the gown I was wearing.

Except the design in the photograph was older.

Much older.

Margaret pointed toward the dress.

"Your mother created that design.""

I looked down at my own gown.

"But I designed this.""

"You did," Margaret replied.

"And that's precisely why I came.""

The audience began whispering again.

Thomas cleared his throat.

"Mrs. Hayes, could you explain what this has to do with tonight's competition?""

Margaret looked toward Richard.

"Twenty-nine years ago, Anna and I created a collection called The Emerald Rebirth. It was intended to celebrate the idea that damaged materials could be transformed into extraordinary clothing.""

She lifted the photograph.

"The centerpiece was an emerald peacock gown. Anna designed the original silhouette. I developed the embroidery techniques. Together, we registered the collection under a small independent label.""

"Hayes and Bennett," Eleanor whispered.

Margaret nodded.

"Exactly.""

My heart pounded.

I had never heard that name.

Margaret continued.

"Unfortunately, our partnership ended after a series of financial problems. Anna returned to New York. I remained in London. We agreed to preserve the collection and protect its designs.""

Richard stepped forward.

"This is irrelevant.""

Margaret turned toward him.

"Is it?""

"Those designs are decades old. They have no connection to Cole Maison.""

Margaret reached into her folder again.

"Then perhaps you can explain why Cole Maison released a collection last year using the same original sketches.""

A wave of gasps moved through the room.

Vanessa shook her head.

"That's ridiculous. Our collection was developed by our own design team.""

"Really?"" Margaret asked.

She placed a second photograph beside the first.

It showed a silver gown from Vanessa's current collection.

Then she placed the original sketch next to it.

The similarities were unmistakable.

The same shoulder structure.

The same feather-shaped panels.

The same unusual embroidery pattern.

I stared at the drawings.

I had seen those details before.

They were almost identical to the designs my mother had kept in a small notebook at home.

I had assumed they were her personal experiments.

Margaret looked at Vanessa.

"Do you recognize this?""

Vanessa lifted her chin.

"I recognize a common design inspiration.""

"Common inspiration doesn't explain the identical construction notes.""

Richard moved closer.

"Margaret, I strongly advise you to take this conversation elsewhere.""

Margaret smiled without warmth.

"You've been advising people to stay quiet for years, Richard. It hasn't worked very well.""

Then she turned toward the judges.

"I didn't come here to discuss the past alone. I came because the winning collection tonight is connected to the original work in a way none of you understand.""

My stomach tightened.

Thomas looked confused.

"What do you mean?""

Margaret placed one final document on the table.

It was a certificate bearing two signatures.

Anna Bennett.

Margaret Hayes.

Below them was the name of the original design collection.

The Emerald Rebirth.

I looked at the certificate.

Then at my dress.

The peacock brooch suddenly felt heavier against my waist.

Margaret leaned toward me.

"Maya, did your mother ever give you a small wooden box?""

I nodded slowly.

"She did.""

"Did it contain old sketches?""

"Yes.""

"And a silver key?""

My eyes widened.

"How do you know that?""

Margaret's expression changed.

For the first time, she looked frightened.

"Because that key opens the archive where the original collection was registered.""

Richard suddenly stepped between us.

"That's enough.""

His voice was sharp.

"You're making accusations without context. The committee should not entertain this.""

Eleanor stood.

"Richard, I think we should let her finish.""

"No.""

He looked toward the audience.

"This is a private commercial dispute being turned into public entertainment.""

Margaret closed her folder.

"Then perhaps we should discuss the documents I sent your company six months ago.""

Richard froze.

Vanessa looked at him.

"Dad?""

Margaret continued.

"Your company received a formal notice regarding the unauthorized use of Anna Bennett's designs. You ignored it. You then submitted another collection containing the same patterns to this gala.""

Thomas looked toward the judges.

"Is that true?""

Richard said nothing.

Margaret turned toward me.

"Your mother left you something, Maya. Something she wanted you to have when the time was right.""

I felt tears gathering.

"What is it?""

Margaret opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, every screen in the ballroom suddenly lit up.

A red warning appeared.

*CONFIDENTIAL ARCHIVE ACCESS REVOKED.*

Margaret stared at the screen.

Then she looked at Richard.

He was holding his phone.

May you like

And he was smiling.

"Unfortunately," he said, "I believe we're finished here.""
