Chapter 3: The Announcement Nobody Expected

The backstage room was colder than the ballroom.

I stood beside a row of garment racks while a production assistant adjusted the lighting equipment.

My emerald-teal gown occupied nearly half the space.

Every few seconds, someone glanced at it.

Nobody seemed able to decide whether they were looking at a dress or a piece of sculpture.

Daniel stood beside me, checking the photographs on his camera.

"Look at this.""

He turned the screen toward me.

The photograph showed me walking through the golden corridor.

The gown's train spread behind me, and the metallic embroidery reflected the chandelier light.

I stared.

"It looks different in the photograph.""

"Because the fabric moves differently under the lights.""

He enlarged the image.

"See those gold details? They almost look like actual feathers.""

I smiled.

"That's what I wanted.""

A woman approached us.

She was in her early sixties, with silver hair styled into a neat low bun and a black silk jacket fastened with a single pearl button.

I recognized her immediately.

Eleanor Whitmore.

The woman I had dreamed of meeting for almost a decade.

She stopped in front of me.

"Miss Bennett?""

I straightened.

"Yes. It's an honor to meet you.""

Eleanor didn't offer her hand immediately.

Instead, she studied the gown.

Her eyes moved slowly across the bodice.

Then the waist.

Then the enormous feathered train.

"Turn around," she said.

I obeyed.

She moved closer, examining the stitching.

"Who constructed the back panels?""

"I did.""

"By hand?""

"Mostly. I used an old industrial machine for the main seams.""

Eleanor raised an eyebrow.

"An old machine?""

"From the storage room.""

She looked at the gold embroidery again.

"And the fabric?""

I hesitated.

"The original gown was damaged.""

"I can see that.""

Her gaze settled on the deep teal patches.

"Someone poured dye on it?""

I nodded.

"Yes.""

"Who?""

Before I could answer, Vanessa's voice came from behind us.

"That would be an unfortunate accident.""

I turned.

Vanessa had entered the backstage room with her father.

Richard Cole wore a perfectly tailored black tuxedo.

He was a tall man with silver hair and the kind of expression that made people lower their voices when he entered a room.

He smiled at Eleanor.

"Ms. Whitmore. It's wonderful to see you.""

Eleanor nodded politely.

"Richard.""

Vanessa stepped beside him.

"Hello, Eleanor. I hope you like my collection.""

"I haven't seen it yet.""

Vanessa laughed lightly.

"Of course. I simply wanted to make sure there were no misunderstandings about the judging process.""

Her eyes shifted toward me.

"Some people have been making rather dramatic claims about what happened earlier.""

I folded my arms.

"What claims?""

Vanessa widened her eyes.

"Oh, Maya. I don't want another scene.""

Richard looked at me.

"Miss Bennett, I understand you're upset. But this is a professional competition, not a place for personal grievances.""

I stared at him.

"Your daughter poured industrial dye on my dress.""

Vanessa gasped.

"That's a horrible accusation!""

"Then explain why you were holding the container.""

"I was helping the event staff.""

"With a pitcher full of teal dye?""

Vanessa looked at her father.

Richard sighed.

"Enough. We don't need to turn this into a spectacle.""

Eleanor hadn't moved.

She was still looking at the gown.

Then she asked a question.

"Vanessa, what did you use on her dress?""

Vanessa blinked.

"Excuse me?""

"The liquid. What was in the container?""

Vanessa's smile stiffened.

"I don't know. Some decorative material. I didn't look.""

Eleanor turned toward the event coordinator, who had just entered the room.

"Helen, could you tell me why Miss Bennett was prevented from presenting?""

Helen looked uncomfortable.

"Her original gown was damaged, and we were concerned about the visual standards of the event.""

Eleanor glanced at the emerald gown.

"Visual standards?""

Helen swallowed.

"At the time, we didn't know she had another design.""

"Another design?"" Richard repeated.

Vanessa laughed.

"She made that in a storage room. Surely we're not pretending this is comparable to a professional collection.""

I looked at her.

"Would you like to inspect the seams?""

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

"Don't be ridiculous.""

"Then don't judge something you haven't examined.""

A production assistant hurried into the room.

"Ms. Whitmore, the judges are ready.""

Eleanor nodded.

Then she looked at me.

"Miss Bennett, are you prepared to present?""

"Yes.""

"Good.""

She turned toward Helen.

"Put her in the running order.""

Helen looked uncertain.

"Are you sure?""

Eleanor's voice became firm.

"Quite sure.""

Vanessa's expression changed.

"Dad...""

Richard placed a hand on her arm.

"Relax.""

But I saw the way his jaw tightened.

He was no longer smiling.

The presentation began at 10:00 p.m.

One by one, the young designers walked onto the stage.

There were elegant red gowns, dramatic black suits, architectural dresses, and collections made from recycled materials.

The audience applauded.

The judges took notes.

Vanessa presented fourth.

Her collection was called The Crown of Winter.

It consisted of five silver and white gowns, each covered in delicate crystals.

They were undeniably beautiful.

Her final model wore a dramatic silver dress with a high collar and a train that stretched across the stage.

The audience applauded enthusiastically.

Vanessa stepped forward.

She wore a fitted silver gown of her own design.

Her blonde hair was swept into a flawless bun.

She smiled for the cameras.

"Thank you," she said.

"My collection represents the strength of women who refuse to be ordinary.""

She glanced toward the backstage entrance.

"And who understand that excellence cannot be improvised.""

A few guests laughed.

I felt Daniel's hand tighten around his camera.

"She's talking about you.""

"I know.""

"Want me to say something?""

"No.""

I watched Vanessa take her bow.

She was confident.

She had every reason to be.

Her collection was expensive, technically polished, and supported by her family's reputation.

But it wasn't original.

I recognized several details from a collection I had submitted to a design house the previous year.

The same sculpted shoulders.

The same silver feather pattern.

Even the same arrangement of crystals along the waist.

I looked at Daniel.

"Did you photograph the original sketches I sent you?""

"Every page.""

"Keep them safe.""

He nodded.

At 10:18 p.m., the final designer finished.

The presenter returned to the center of the stage.

He was a distinguished-looking man named Thomas Blake, known for hosting international fashion events.

He adjusted his microphone.

"Ladies and gentlemen, what an extraordinary evening. We have witnessed creativity, craftsmanship, and some remarkable examples of modern design.""

The audience applauded.

"Tonight, we celebrate not only beautiful clothing but the imagination and resilience behind every collection.""

My name appeared on the screen.

MAYA BENNETT.

My heart began pounding.

I stepped onto the stage.

The spotlight hit my face.

For one second, I couldn't see anything beyond the brightness.

Then the audience came into focus.

Hundreds of faces.

Cameras.

The judges.

Eleanor.

And Vanessa.

Vanessa was seated in the front row.

Her expression was frozen.

I walked to the center of the platform.

My train spread behind me.

The audience became unusually quiet.

Thomas smiled.

"Miss Bennett, I understand your presentation tonight has been somewhat... unconventional.""

A few people laughed.

I smiled politely.

"That's one way to describe it.""

He glanced at the dress.

"Would you tell us about your design?""

I took the microphone.

"This gown began as a champagne silk dress.""

The audience listened.

"Earlier tonight, someone poured a thick teal dye over it. Most people would have considered the dress ruined.""

I paused.

"But I saw something else.""

I touched the peacock brooch at my waist.

"I saw an opportunity to create something I hadn't originally imagined.""

I moved slightly, allowing the train to shift.

"The teal fabric became the center of the feathers. The emerald organza created the movement. The gold stitching brought the entire design together.""

A woman in the audience leaned toward her companion.

I continued.

"I didn't have the perfect materials. I didn't have a professional studio. I didn't even have the machine I usually work with.""

A few people smiled.

"But I had something more important.""

I looked toward the judges.

"I knew how to create.""

The applause began slowly.

Then it grew.

I looked at Eleanor.

She was smiling.

Not politely.

Genuinely.

I lowered the microphone.

For the first time that evening, I felt that I belonged on that stage.

Then Thomas raised his hand.

The applause faded.

"Thank you, Miss Bennett. That was certainly a memorable presentation.""

He turned toward the audience.

"Before we announce the results, there is one important matter we need to address.""

I looked at him.

He glanced toward the judges.

Then toward the large screen behind us.

A staff member whispered something into his earpiece.

Thomas's expression changed.

"Ladies and gentlemen...""

The ballroom became silent.

"We have an announcement that changes everything!""

My smile vanished.

Behind the presenter, the enormous screen went black.

A low murmur spread through the room.

Vanessa suddenly stood.

Richard grabbed her wrist.

"Sit down," he whispered.

She shook her head.

"Dad, what's happening?""

"I said sit down.""

Thomas looked toward the backstage area.

"Earlier tonight, our judging committee received information concerning one of the participating collections.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

Information?

About which collection?

Thomas continued.

"The committee has requested that we pause the awards presentation until this matter has been clarified.""

A photographer lowered his camera.

Someone whispered, "Is this about the dress?""

I glanced toward Eleanor.

She had stopped smiling.

Her face was serious now.

Daniel moved closer to the stage.

"What is this?"" he whispered.

I shook my head.

"I don't know.""

Thomas looked down at a sealed envelope in his hand.

"There are certain documents that must be reviewed before we proceed.""

Vanessa's face had gone pale.

Richard was already speaking urgently into his phone.

Then the presenter said something that made the entire room erupt.

"The individual involved in this matter is connected to a collection that has been under investigation for several months.""

I gripped the microphone.

My mind raced.

Had someone discovered what Vanessa had done?

Was this about the stolen designs?

Or was there something else?

Thomas opened the envelope.

He looked at the first page.

Then he looked directly at me.

"Miss Bennett...""

My heart stopped.

"Could you please remain onstage?""

I nodded slowly.

He turned toward the judges.

Eleanor stood.

And from the front row, Vanessa whispered something I couldn't hear.

Richard immediately covered her hand with his.

The presenter raised the document.

"Before we make the announcement, there is one person in this room who needs to understand why tonight's events are about to take an entirely different direction.""

The lights dimmed.

The giant screen flickered.

A photograph began appearing.

But before the image could fully load, the screen went black again.

Thomas looked toward the technical booth.

"Stop the presentation.""

The room fell into darkness.

Then a voice came through the speakers.

A woman's voice.

Calm.

Familiar.

And impossible to mistake.

"Before you announce the winner, Thomas, I believe everyone deserves to know who actually owns that dress.""

I turned toward the sound.

Eleanor Whitmore was standing beside the judges.

But the voice hadn't come from her.

It had come from somewhere behind the stage.

Vanessa suddenly looked as though she might faint.

And Richard Cole...

For the first time that evening, he looked genuinely afraid.

*Because the announcement wasn't about who had won the fashion competition.*

*It was about a secret that could destroy the Cole family's entire fashion empire.*
