Chapter 4: The Secret Behind Maya's Name
“I'm here for the girl.””
The words came from upstairs, followed by the scrape of a shoe against hardwood.
Marcus pulled Maya behind him.
Ethan stepped forward, his phone still recording.
“Stay behind me,” Marcus ordered.
“Dad, that's the man from the video.””
“I know.””
Officer Bennett's voice cut through the hallway.
“Sir, keep your hands where I can see them. Step away from the bedroom door.””
A man's reply followed.
“I don't have a weapon.””
“Then you won't have a problem following instructions.””
Footsteps approached the staircase.
Marcus kept his eyes fixed on the landing, waiting for the stranger to appear. His heart hammered against his ribs. Every instinct told him to get his children out of the house, but he couldn't leave while an unknown man was upstairs.
Then Officer Bennett emerged, followed by her partner.
Between them walked a tall, lean man in a charcoal jacket. His hair was cropped close to his scalp, and a thin scar ran from his left temple toward his cheekbone. He carried no bag this time.
His eyes moved across the room.
They stopped on Maya.
For a fraction of a second, his expression softened.
Then he looked at Marcus.
“Mr. Cole,” he said.
“We need to talk.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“You came into my home, photographed my daughter, and left a threat on my doorstep. You have about three seconds to explain yourself.””
The man glanced at Officer Bennett.
“I'm not here to hurt anyone.””
“Then why were you trying to get into my daughter's room?”” Marcus demanded.
“I wasn't trying to get into her room. I was looking for something.””
“What?””
The man looked at Maya again.
“Her birth certificate.””
Marcus went still.
Rachel made a small choking sound behind him.
Officer Bennett immediately turned toward the stranger.
“Why would you need a child's birth certificate?””
The man hesitated.
“Because the information on it could answer some questions.””
“What questions?”” Marcus asked.
The stranger took a slow breath.
“My name is Daniel Brooks. I was hired to locate Maya's biological family.””
Marcus stared at him.
“You're standing in front of her biological family.””
“Not all of it.””
The room seemed to shrink around them.
Maya's mother had been dead for five years. Marcus had attended her funeral with his daughter in his arms, promising that he would always be there for her.
There had never been any question about Maya's parentage.
At least, none that he knew of.
“What are you talking about?”” Marcus demanded.
Daniel reached inside his jacket.
Both officers reacted instantly.
“Hands where we can see them!”” Officer Bennett ordered.
Daniel froze, then slowly withdrew an empty hand.
“My wallet,” he said.
“I have identification.””
Officer Bennett took it from him and examined it before allowing him to continue.
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“I was hired by a woman named Paulina Reed. She believes Maya may be her granddaughter.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
“I understand this is difficult.””
“No, you don't understand anything. Maya's mother was Olivia Cole. I was married to her for eight years. I was there when Maya was born.””
Daniel's expression didn't change.
“Then you should have no problem verifying it.””
Marcus felt the first sharp sting of anger give way to something more unsettling.
Doubt.
Not about whether he loved Maya. Not about whether he had raised her.
About why a stranger would risk entering a house and frightening a child over a family connection that supposedly didn't exist.
He turned toward Rachel.
“What does he mean?””
Rachel's face had gone white.
“Marcus, I can explain.””
“Then explain.””
She looked at Daniel.
He gave her a small, almost imperceptible shake of his head.
Marcus saw it.
So did Officer Bennett.
“Mrs. Cole,” the officer said, “I suggest you stop communicating with the suspect and answer your husband's question.””
Rachel's lips trembled.
“I knew someone was looking for Maya.””
Marcus stared at her.
“How long?””
“About six months.””
Six months.
Six months of dinners, school mornings, family photographs, and ordinary evenings watching television together. Six months during which Rachel had looked him in the eye and said nothing.
“You knew someone was looking for my daughter, and you didn't tell me?””
“I didn't know who they were at first.””
“Then why did you let this man into our house?””
“Because he said he could make the whole thing go away.””
Daniel let out a short laugh.
“That isn't what I said.””
“Shut up!”” Rachel snapped.
Officer Bennett stepped between them.
“Enough. Everyone will speak one at a time.””
Marcus looked at his wife.
“What whole thing?””
Rachel wrapped her arms around herself.
“Before I married you, I had a friend named Vanessa. We lost touch years ago. She contacted me last spring and asked if I knew anything about Olivia's family.””
“Why would Vanessa ask you that?””
“Because she knew Olivia.””
Marcus felt his stomach tighten.
Olivia had rarely discussed her childhood. Her parents had died when she was young, or so she had told him. She'd spent much of her adolescence with distant relatives and had always said she wanted Maya to grow up with a stable home.
But Marcus had never questioned the details.
He had trusted his wife.
He had trusted the life they built.
Rachel continued.
“Vanessa said Olivia had a sister who gave up a baby for adoption. She thought there might be a connection.””
“A connection to Maya?””
Rachel nodded.
“I didn't believe her. Then she sent me a photograph.””
“Of what?””
“Olivia holding Maya at the hospital.””
Marcus's throat tightened.
“That's not proof of anything.””
“I know.””
“Then what did you do?””
“I ignored it.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You didn't ignore it. You contacted Paulina.””
Rachel turned on him.
“Because you told me I could get paid for helping!””
The room fell silent.
Marcus stared at her.
“Paid?””
Rachel looked as though she wished the floor would open beneath her.
Daniel's face hardened.
“You're making this worse.””
“No,” Rachel said, her voice suddenly breaking.
“You made it worse when you told me that if I didn't cooperate, you'd tell Marcus about the money.””
Officer Bennett raised her eyebrows.
“Mrs. Cole, what money?””
Rachel wiped her face with the heel of her hand.
“The seventy thousand dollars I owe. Daniel said Paulina would pay it off if I helped him establish whether Maya was the child she was searching for.””
Marcus couldn't believe what he was hearing.
“You were willing to help a stranger investigate my daughter because he promised to erase your debt?””
“I thought it was just paperwork! I thought we'd find out there was no connection, and that would be the end of it.””
“And when he came into our house?””
“I was scared.””
“Of him?””
Rachel nodded.
“Of him. Of the debt. Of you finding out what I'd done.””
Marcus looked at Daniel.
“Who is Paulina Reed?””
Daniel's eyes moved to Maya.
“She's a woman who has spent twelve years searching for her daughter.””
Maya stepped out from behind Marcus.
“Why is everyone talking about me like I'm not here?””
Her small voice silenced the room more effectively than any shout.
Marcus turned immediately.
“Sweetheart, you don't have to listen to this.””
“Yes, I do.”” Maya's eyes shone with tears.
“They're talking about my mom. And they're saying someone else thinks I'm her daughter.””
She looked directly at Daniel.
“Are you saying my mom wasn't my real mom?””
Daniel hesitated.
“No. I'm saying there's a possibility that your mother knew something about your birth that nobody has told you.””
Maya shook her head.
“My mom loved me.””
“I believe that.””
“She used to sing to me when I couldn't sleep. She made pancakes shaped like stars. She wrote my name on all my school lunch bags, even when I told her I was too old for that.””
Her voice cracked.
“She was my mom.””
Marcus knelt beside her.
“She still is, Maya. Nothing anyone says changes that.””
Daniel looked away.
For the first time, he appeared uncomfortable.
Officer Bennett motioned to her partner.
“Take Mr. Brooks outside while we establish exactly how he entered the property.””
Daniel didn't resist.
As he passed Marcus, he stopped.
“You should check the hospital records,” he said quietly.
“Especially the original paperwork from the night Maya was born.””
Marcus stood.
“What are you suggesting?””
Daniel's gaze shifted toward Rachel.
“I'm suggesting someone in this house knows more than they're admitting.””
Then the officers escorted him outside.
Marcus turned back to his wife.
“Is there something else you haven't told me?””
Rachel shook her head too quickly.
“No.””
“Look at me and tell me the truth.””
She tried.
But her eyes kept drifting toward Maya.
And that was when Marcus noticed the small gold necklace Rachel wore beneath her blouse. He had bought it for her two Christmases earlier, but she'd rarely worn it.
Now she clutched the pendant as though it were the only thing keeping her upright.
Maya stared at it.
Then she whispered, “I've seen that before.””
Rachel's hand flew to her throat.
Marcus looked between them.
“Seen what?””
Maya pointed at the necklace.
“Mom had a picture of it. She kept it inside the little box in her dresser. She said it belonged to someone who loved her very much.””
Rachel's face crumpled.
She reached for the pendant, but Maya stepped backward.
“Why do you have my mom's necklace?””
Rachel couldn't answer.
Marcus's voice dropped to a dangerous whisper.
“Rachel. Where did you get that necklace?””
She closed her eyes.
May you like
And when she finally spoke, the answer changed everything.
“Olivia gave it to me the week before she died.””
