Chapter 2: The Man in the Hallway

Marcus didn't call Rachel downstairs.

He went upstairs himself.

Ethan stayed in the living room with Maya, who sat curled into the corner of the couch, clutching the two pieces of her ceramic bird. Marcus had told her he would be back in a minute, but she watched him climb the stairs as if he might disappear, too.

At the landing, he heard Rachel talking.

Her bedroom door was nearly closed.

“No, you can't keep doing this,” she whispered.

“I told you to be careful.””

Marcus stopped.

A floorboard creaked beneath his shoe.

The conversation ended instantly.

He knocked once and pushed open the door.

Rachel stood beside the dresser, her phone pressed against her chest. Her handbag lay open on the bed. A small velvet jewelry box sat beside it, and the bedroom window was open despite the cool autumn air.

She looked irritated rather than surprised.

“Do you ever knock properly?”” she asked.

“Who were you talking to?””

“My sister.””

“Then why did you tell her to be careful?””

Rachel blinked.

“Excuse me?””

“I heard you through the door.””

She set her phone on the dresser.

“Marcus, I have had an awful afternoon. Your daughter has been making me miserable, and now you're interrogating me in my own bedroom.””

“Our bedroom.””

“Whatever.””

He held out his hand.

“Show me your phone.””

Rachel stared at him.

Then she laughed.

“You cannot be serious.””

“Who is the man in our hallway?””

The laughter disappeared.

For a second, her face betrayed her. Her eyes widened, and her fingers tightened around the edge of the dresser.

Then she recovered.

“What man?””

“The man you brought into this house last night.””

“I didn't bring anyone into this house.””

“I watched the footage.””

Rachel's lips parted.

Marcus watched her carefully.

He had expected anger. Denial, perhaps. Maybe even a desperate explanation.

He hadn't expected the way she suddenly looked toward the bedroom door, as if checking whether someone might be listening.

“Where did you get that footage?”” she asked.

“Ethan found it.””

“Ethan has been going through the security system?””

“He was checking the cameras because someone left the garage door open.””

Rachel's face hardened.

“That boy has no right to spy on me.””

“He didn't spy on you. He watched a recording from our own security cameras.””

“Those cameras are supposed to protect the house, not give your children an excuse to invade my privacy.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Who is the man?””

Rachel picked up her phone and shoved it into her handbag.

“I don't owe you an explanation every time someone comes to the door.””

“Someone doesn't come to the door carrying a duffel bag at midnight and head straight for my daughter's bedroom.””

Her eyes flashed.

“Don't you dare accuse me of putting Maya in danger.””

“Then explain the footage.””

Rachel folded her arms.

“He's a friend.””

“What friend?””

“Someone from work.””

“What's his name?””

She hesitated.

It lasted less than two seconds.

Marcus noticed anyway.

“Daniel,” she said.

“Daniel what?””

“Daniel Brooks.””

“Where does he work?””

Rachel's mouth tightened.

“Why does that matter?””

“Because you've just told me he's a friend from work, and I don't know anyone named Daniel Brooks.””

“You don't know every person I work with!””

“Then tell me where you met him.””

Rachel threw up her hands.

“This is ridiculous. I am not going to stand here and be treated like a criminal because Ethan found a video of someone visiting me.””

“Visiting you in the middle of the night?””

“Yes!””

The answer came too quickly.

Marcus glanced at the open handbag. Beneath her wallet, he saw a folded envelope with a red stamp in the corner. Rachel immediately pulled the bag closed.

“What was that?”” he asked.

“Nothing.””

“Rachel.””

“It's paperwork.””

“What paperwork?””

“Mine.””

She snatched the bag off the bed.

“You want to know the truth? I'm sick of being treated like a guest in this marriage. Every decision revolves around you and your children.

Every conversation becomes a discussion about Maya. Every time I try to build something for myself, you act as though I'm betraying you.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Is that what this is about? You brought a stranger into our home because you feel neglected?””

“I brought nobody into our home.””

“You just admitted he was a friend visiting you.””

Rachel looked away.

Marcus exhaled slowly.

“I'm asking you one simple question. Is there a reason this man was near Maya's bedroom?””

“No.””

“Then why did you point him toward it?””

“I didn't.””

“The camera shows you doing exactly that.””

Rachel's expression changed again.

This time, the anger came with a sharp edge of fear.

“You don't understand what you saw.””

“Then help me understand.””

She shook her head.

“Not here.””

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

“What does that mean?””

“It means not here, Marcus.””

“Why?””

“Because Ethan is listening. Because Maya is downstairs. Because you turn every little thing into a family crisis.””

Marcus took a step back.

“Rachel, I watched a man I don't know walk into my house and approach my daughter's bedroom. This isn't a little thing.””

She stared at him for several seconds.

Then she picked up the velvet jewelry box and shoved it into a drawer.

“Give me until tomorrow,” she said.

“Tomorrow?””

“I'll explain everything tomorrow.””

“No. You can explain it now.””

“Please.””

The word stopped him.

Rachel rarely said please when she wanted something. She preferred demands, accusations, and the sort of cold silence that made everyone else feel responsible for fixing her mood.

Now she stood beside the dresser with both hands pressed against its polished surface.

Her eyes were wet.

Marcus had seen her cry before. He had comforted her through arguments with her sister, through disappointments at work, through the grief she sometimes described about the childhood she claimed had been difficult.

But this was different.

She looked frightened.

“Did he threaten you?”” Marcus asked.

Rachel's head snapped up.

“No.””

“Are you in trouble?””

“No!””

“Then why can't you tell me who he is?””

“Because you won't understand!””

“Try me.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Then her phone vibrated inside the handbag.

Rachel went rigid.

Marcus watched her pull it out.

A message glowed across the screen.

*Unknown Number: He saw the footage. Do what we discussed before he finds the rest.*

Rachel turned the phone facedown.

Too late.

Marcus had read every word.

“What rest?”” he asked.

Rachel looked at him as if he had just stepped into a trap.

“Marcus, listen to me.””

“What rest?””

“You need to trust me.””

“Trust you?”” He let out a disbelieving breath.

“You won't tell me the man's name, you won't explain why he was in our house, and now someone is texting you about footage I haven't even seen yet. Tell me what I'm supposed to trust.””

She gripped his wrist.

“Please don't involve the police.””

Marcus pulled his hand away.

“Why would the police need to be involved?””

Rachel's fingers fell to her sides.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she whispered, “Because if they find him, everything will fall apart.””

Marcus stared at her.

Before he could respond, a loud crash came from downstairs.

Maya screamed.

He ran.

Ethan stood at the foot of the stairs, holding a broken picture frame. Maya was pressed against the wall beside the hallway, her face drained of color.

The front door stood open.

Cold air swept through the living room.

Marcus scanned the porch, then the driveway.

Nobody was there.

“What happened?”” he demanded.

Ethan pointed toward the door.

“I heard someone outside. I went to check, and the door was already open.””

“Did you see anyone?””

“No.””

Maya shook her head rapidly.

“I heard footsteps,” she whispered.

“I thought it was Dad.””

Marcus crossed the room and wrapped his arms around her.

“It's okay. I'm here.””

She clung to him.

Then he noticed something on the floor near the door.

A small white envelope.

His name was written across the front in black ink.

Marcus picked it up.

Inside was a single photograph.

It showed Maya sleeping in her bed.

The picture had been taken from inside her bedroom.

On the back, someone had written six words.

*Stop asking questions about the man.*

Marcus's blood ran cold.

Ethan leaned over his shoulder.

“Dad,” he whispered, “that picture was taken last night.””

Marcus looked toward the stairs.

Rachel stood at the landing, staring at the photograph.

She wasn't surprised.

She looked as though she had been waiting for it.

May you like

And when Marcus raised his eyes to hers, she mouthed two words he could barely believe.

I'm sorry.
