Chapter 6: Grandma's Secret

“Tell me that's not you.””

Daniel's voice was barely above a whisper.

Evelyn stared at the photograph.

There was no denying it.

The woman standing beside Thomas Reed had her silver hair, her emerald brooch, and the same pearl earrings she had worn for years.

It was her.

Madison folded her arms.

“Well?””

Evelyn didn't look at her.

“I can explain.””

Daniel's face tightened.

“Then explain.””

Evelyn slowly sat down.

For several seconds, she studied the photograph.

Then she spoke.

“Thomas came to me because he was afraid.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Afraid of what?””

“Your father.””

“Why?””

“Because Richard had discovered that Thomas was helping Charlotte investigate the trust.””

Margaret nodded.

“That matches what Charlotte told me.””

Daniel looked between them.

“Everyone knew something except me?””

Evelyn's eyes filled.

“Your father made certain you knew nothing.””

She looked toward the fireplace.

The flames had almost died down.

“Richard was a difficult man, Daniel. He believed that everything bearing the Carter name belonged to him. The company, the house, the investments, even the decisions his children made.””

Daniel sat opposite her.

“I know he was controlling.””

“No,” Evelyn whispered.

“You know what he allowed you to see.””

She took a breath.

“After Charlotte became pregnant with Lily, your father began talking about succession. He wanted the estate structured so that the Carter family could control every major asset for generations.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“He wanted Lily to inherit everything.””

“That was what he told us.””

Evelyn looked down at her hands.

“But after Lily was born, he changed his mind.””

“Why?””

“Because Charlotte insisted that Lily's inheritance be protected independently. She didn't want Richard deciding how much money his granddaughter could access or who could benefit from it.””

Daniel remembered the arguments.

His father had complained that Charlotte was challenging his authority.

He had dismissed it as a disagreement between two strong personalities.

Now he realized it had been much more serious.

Evelyn continued.

“Richard believed Charlotte was turning you against him. He began pressuring her to change the trust.””

“And she refused.””

“Yes.””

“Then what happened?””

Evelyn looked at Margaret.

Margaret nodded.

“Tell him.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Thomas came to me three months before Richard died. He said he had discovered a plan to transfer several estate assets into an investment company. He believed your father intended to use Lily's trust as collateral.””

Daniel stood abruptly.

“Collateral for what?””

“Debts.””

“What debts?””

“Richard had made several risky investments. Some of them failed. He borrowed money to cover the losses.””

Daniel rubbed his face.

“I knew the company was struggling, but he told me everything was under control.””

“It wasn't.””

Evelyn reached into her handbag.

She removed a folded document.

“I kept this because I knew one day we might need it.””

Daniel took it.

It was a photocopy of a bank transaction.

The amount was $420,000.

The receiving account belonged to a company Daniel had never heard of.

“Where did you get this?””

“Thomas gave it to me.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because your father threatened to have you removed from the company if you interfered. He told me he had enough influence to make sure you lost everything.””

Daniel stared at the document.

“And you believed him?””

Evelyn looked at her son.

“I was afraid of losing you.””

Her voice broke.

“I had already watched your father destroy one marriage in this family. I couldn't bear the thought of him destroying yours too.””

Daniel looked up.

“What do you mean?””

Evelyn hesitated.

“Richard was involved in the circumstances that led to your sister leaving home.””

Daniel frowned.

“My sister?””

“Rebecca.””

The name struck him like a physical blow.

Rebecca Carter had left home at twenty-two after a bitter argument with their father.

She had moved overseas and cut contact with most of the family.

Daniel hadn't spoken to her in nearly twelve years.

He believed she had chosen to disappear.

Evelyn shook her head.

“Richard told her that if she challenged his business decisions, he would make sure she never received a share of the family estate.””

Daniel lowered the document.

“Why are you telling me this now?””

“Because Charlotte found out that Rebecca had tried to contact her.””

Margaret opened her briefcase.

“Charlotte sent Rebecca several emails before she died.””

Daniel stared.

“Rebecca knew about the trust?””

“She knew Richard was hiding assets,” Margaret replied.

“But she didn't know how far he had gone.””

Evelyn looked at her son.

“Your sister tried to warn you.””

Daniel sank into the chair.

For years, he had believed Rebecca was selfish.

He remembered the last argument they had.

He had accused her of abandoning their mother.

She had told him he was defending a man who would destroy his own family to protect his reputation.

He had hung up.

He had never called again.

“Where is she?”” he whispered.

Margaret hesitated.

“I don't know exactly.””

Evelyn reached for another document.

“But I have an address.””

She slid it across the table.

Daniel stared at the handwriting.

It was a London address.

His sister had been living there for years.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because Charlotte asked me to wait until the trust investigation was complete.””

Daniel looked at his mother.

“You've been hiding this from me.””

“Yes.””

He stood.

“I don't know how to process that.””

Evelyn nodded.

“I understand.””

Madison suddenly stepped forward.

“This is all very touching, but none of it proves that I stole anything.””

Margaret looked at her.

“Actually, it proves quite a lot.””

Madison's face hardened.

“You have no idea what happened behind closed doors.””

“Then tell us.””

Madison turned toward Daniel.

“Your father paid me to help him.””

Daniel stared.

“What?””

“He said he needed someone outside the family to manage certain transactions. He promised the money would be returned.””

“Did you know it belonged to Lily?””

Madison hesitated.

Then she answered.

“Yes.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Daniel's voice shook.

“You knew?””

“I thought it was temporary!””

“You took money from my daughter's trust?””

“Your father told me it was family money!””

“It was hers!””

Madison's composure finally broke.

“You think I don't know that?””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Then why?””

She laughed bitterly.

“Because I was trying to survive!””

The room went still.

Madison's eyes filled with tears.

“My father left us with nothing. My mother spent years working two jobs. I learned very young that people with money never worry about where the next meal comes from.””

Daniel shook his head.

“So you decided to take from a child?””

“Richard promised me security. He told me if I helped him restructure the estate, he would make sure I was protected.””

Evelyn's expression remained cold.

“And when Richard died?””

Madison looked down.

“He left me nothing.””

Daniel stared.

“You married me because of the estate?””

Madison's silence answered him.

For a moment, Daniel seemed unable to breathe.

Then he asked the question that mattered most.

“Did you ever love me?””

Madison looked at him.

“I did.””

“Did you love Lily?””

She didn't answer.

Daniel turned away.

Evelyn stood.

“Margaret, I think it's time we discuss the guardianship.””

Margaret opened a separate folder.

“Charlotte created a contingency plan in the event Daniel became unable to act as Lily's sole guardian.””

Daniel turned.

“Unable?””

“Not because of death,” Margaret clarified.

“Because of financial misconduct, abuse, or a serious breach of his responsibilities as trustee.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Why would Charlotte think that would happen?””

Margaret's expression softened.

“Because she knew how much influence your father had over you. She was afraid you might be pressured into making decisions against Lily's interests.””

Daniel looked down.

He couldn't argue.

He had already allowed Madison to remove Charlotte's photographs.

He had allowed her to control Lily's routines.

He had repeatedly told his daughter to stop asking questions about her mother.

He had mistaken silence for peace.

And Lily had paid for it.

Margaret continued.

“Charlotte appointed Evelyn as Lily's primary alternate guardian, subject to the court's review. She also established a mechanism allowing an independent trustee to take temporary control of the estate if there was evidence of unauthorized transfers.””

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

“I never wanted to replace you.””

“I know.””

“I only promised Charlotte that Lily would never be left unprotected.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Thank you.””

Margaret placed a final document on the table.

“There is one more matter.””

She turned to Madison.

“Charlotte also left instructions regarding anyone who attempted to interfere with the trust.””

Madison's eyes narrowed.

“What instructions?””

Margaret opened the document.

“A temporary injunction can be sought to prevent the removal or transfer of estate assets. Given the evidence we've found, I recommend we file immediately.””

Madison laughed.

“You can't throw me out.””

“No one said anything about throwing you out.””

Evelyn looked at her.

“But you will no longer have access to Lily's trust accounts, financial records, or private documents.””

Madison turned toward Daniel.

“You can't let them do this.””

Daniel's answer was immediate.

“I can.””

Madison stepped closer.

“Daniel, think about what you're doing.””

“I am.””

“You'll destroy our marriage.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You destroyed my daughter's trust.””

Madison's eyes filled.

“After everything I've done for you?””

Daniel said nothing.

She looked toward the staircase.

“Where's Lily?””

“Upstairs.””

“I want to speak to her.””

“No.””

Madison stared.

“She's my stepdaughter.””

“She is my daughter.””

Evelyn moved toward the hallway.

“Margaret, I'll prepare the guest room for you. We need to organize the documents tonight.””

Margaret nodded.

As they left the living room, Daniel remained standing beside the console.

Madison approached him slowly.

“Daniel, please.””

He didn't look at her.

“Don't.””

“I can explain the rest.””

“The rest?””

Madison swallowed.

“There are things you don't know.””

Daniel finally turned.

“What else is there?””

She opened her mouth.

But before she could speak, a small voice came from the staircase.

“Daddy?””

Lily stood halfway down the steps.

She was holding her mother's broken ornament.

Daniel immediately walked toward her.

“Hey, sweetheart.””

Lily looked at Madison.

Then she looked at her father.

“I found something in Mommy's room.””

Daniel stopped.

“What did you find?””

Lily reached into the pocket of her pajamas and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

“Mommy hid it inside her music box.””

Evelyn came back into the hallway.

“Lily, darling, what is it?””

The little girl handed the paper to her grandmother.

It was a photograph.

An old photograph.

It showed Charlotte standing beside a young woman in a hospital corridor.

Daniel recognized Charlotte immediately.

But the other woman—

He felt his knees weaken.

It was Madison.

And she was holding a newborn baby.

On the back of the photograph, Charlotte had written a sentence.

*THE CHILD MADISON CLAIMS SHE LOST WAS NEVER LOST.*

Daniel looked at Madison.

Her face turned white.

Then Lily whispered:

“Grandma, who is the little baby?””

Madison suddenly rushed toward the photograph.

“GIVE THAT TO ME!””

Daniel caught her wrist.

“Don't you dare.””

Madison stared at him, trembling.

And for the first time, Evelyn understood that the secret Charlotte had been protecting might be far bigger than the missing money.

Because Madison had not entered the Carter family as a stranger.

May you like

She might have had a connection to it long before Daniel ever met her.

And Charlotte had known.
