Chapter 4: The Second Key

“Because the second key is missing.””

Margaret Collins's voice came through the phone, sharp and urgent.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Madison stood beside the staircase, gripping the small silver key in her fist. Daniel stared at her as though he had never seen her before.

Evelyn slowly approached.

“Margaret, this is Evelyn Carter. I need you to explain what is happening.””

There was a brief silence.

“Mrs. Carter? Is Daniel with you?””

“Yes.””

“And Madison?””

Evelyn looked directly at her daughter-in-law.

“She is standing right here.””

Margaret exhaled.

“Then don't let her leave with that key.””

Madison immediately stiffened.

“Excuse me?””

“Madison, I know you can hear me,” Margaret said.

“Put the key down.””

Madison laughed nervously.

“You people have completely lost your minds. This is a family disagreement, not some criminal investigation.””

“Then you shouldn't have any problem explaining why you're holding property that belongs to Lily's trust.””

Madison's expression hardened.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Margaret, what second key are you talking about?””

“The black box has two keys. One opens the main compartment. The other opens a sealed compartment containing the original trust records and the evidence Charlotte collected before she died.””

Daniel glanced at the open box.

“I didn't see another compartment.””

“Because it is hidden beneath the false bottom.””

Evelyn looked at the empty space.

“Then where is the second key?””

Margaret answered immediately.

“Charlotte gave it to me for safekeeping. I was supposed to deliver it to Evelyn personally if anything happened to her.””

Daniel frowned.

“Then how does Madison have one?””

Nobody answered.

Madison tightened her grip.

“This is absurd. I found it inside the box.””

Margaret's voice became colder.

“No, you didn't. That key was never inside the box.””

Madison looked toward the front door.

Daniel noticed.

“Don't move.””

“Don't give me orders!””

“Then tell me why you have a key that supposedly wasn't here.””

Madison's eyes flashed.

“Because your mother planted it!””

Evelyn stared at her.

“Think carefully before you make another accusation.””

Madison pointed toward the fireplace.

“You've already destroyed my belongings. You've been waiting for an opportunity to get rid of me. Now you've invented some story about Charlotte's secret documents.””

Daniel shook his head.

“My mother didn't invent the video.””

“Videos can be edited!””

“Then why are you afraid of the second key?””

Madison opened her mouth.

No answer came.

Evelyn took the phone from Daniel.

“Margaret, can you come here?””

“I'm already on my way. I have the original documents with me. But Evelyn, I need you to understand something.

Charlotte didn't just leave evidence of missing money. She left instructions about Lily's guardianship.””

Evelyn's heart skipped.

“What instructions?””

“I'd rather explain in person.””

“Margaret—”

“Please. Don't discuss the guardianship in front of Madison until I arrive.””

The call ended.

Daniel looked at his mother.

“What guardianship?””

Evelyn slowly lowered the phone.

“I don't know.””

Madison let out a bitter laugh.

“Wonderful. Now you're planning to take my marriage apart and steal my family.””

Daniel turned.

“Your family?””

“Yes! I married you. I helped raise Lily. I have rights too.””

Evelyn's voice remained quiet.

“Rights are not the same as ownership, Madison.””

Madison stepped closer.

“Do you know what I've sacrificed for this family?””

Daniel looked exhausted.

“Then tell me what happened to Lily's money.””

“I didn't take it.””

“The video showed your name.””

“Your father authorized those transactions!””

Daniel froze.

“What did you just say?””

Madison realized her mistake.

She looked down at the key.

“I meant—”

“You said my father authorized them.””

“I don't know what I meant!””

Daniel moved closer.

“Did you know Richard?””

“Of course I knew him. He was your father.””

“Did you ever meet him before I introduced you?””

Madison said nothing.

Evelyn watched her carefully.

Then Madison lifted her chin.

“You want the truth? Fine. Your father and I spoke before I married you.””

Daniel's face changed.

“When?””

“Before the wedding.””

“How long before?””

Madison swallowed.

“About a year.””

Daniel stepped backward.

“A year?””

“He contacted me.””

“Why?””

“He wanted to discuss the family business.””

“What business?””

“The estate. The investments. The trust.””

Daniel stared at her.

“My father was dead for three years when I met you.””

Madison's expression collapsed.

She looked from Daniel to Evelyn.

For the first time, she understood that she had revealed something she couldn't easily explain.

Evelyn spoke slowly.

“You just said you met Richard before your wedding.””

Madison shook her head.

“I meant I knew about his business dealings.””

Daniel's voice dropped.

“Stop lying.””

Before Madison could respond, Lily appeared at the top of the staircase.

She was holding a small stuffed rabbit.

“Daddy?””

Everyone turned.

Daniel immediately softened.

“Hey, princess. You should be resting.””

Lily looked at Madison.

“Is Grandma going to make her leave?””

Madison's expression changed.

“Lily, don't listen to them. Nobody is making anybody leave.””

The little girl tightened her grip on the rabbit.

“Will you break more of Mommy's things?””

Madison looked offended.

“I already told you it was an accident.””

Lily's eyes filled.

“It wasn't.””

Daniel walked toward the staircase and lifted his daughter into his arms.

“That's enough. You don't have to talk about this anymore.””

Lily rested her head against his shoulder.

Then she whispered something that made him stop.

“Daddy, Madison told me something last night.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What did she tell you?””

Lily glanced toward Madison.

“She said if I kept asking about Mommy's room, she'd send me away to a school where nobody knew me.””

Daniel's expression went completely still.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Madison immediately protested.

“She misunderstood me!””

Daniel turned.

“Did you threaten my daughter?””

“I was trying to discipline her!””

“She is eight years old!””

“She refuses to listen!””

Daniel held Lily tighter.

“Because she's grieving her mother!””

Madison stepped forward.

“And what about me? Does anyone care how I feel?””

Daniel didn't answer.

He carried Lily upstairs.

Evelyn followed, leaving Madison alone in the hallway.

Before disappearing around the corner, Evelyn turned back.

“Put the key on the table.””

Madison looked at her.

“No.””

“Then Margaret will have another question for you when she arrives.””

Evelyn walked away.

Madison remained beside the console.

The silver key disappeared into her pocket.

She waited until the upstairs door closed.

Then she took out her phone.

Her fingers moved quickly.

She opened a message thread with an unsaved number.

*They found Charlotte's video. Margaret is coming.*

The reply arrived almost immediately.

*Get the second key. Destroy whatever is inside the compartment. Do not let Daniel see the original documents.*

Madison typed:

*I don't have the second key.*

Three dots appeared.

Then:

*You were never supposed to need it. Find the backup.*

Madison stared at the message.

She looked toward the portrait.

Then toward the locked cabinet at the end of the hallway.

Slowly, she walked toward it.

She had spent nearly two years searching this house.

And now she knew exactly where Charlotte had hidden the other half of the truth.

But when Madison opened the cabinet, she found something she hadn't expected.

A small white envelope.

Her own name was written across the front.

May you like

And beneath it, in Charlotte's handwriting, were four words:

*I KNOW WHAT YOU DID.*
