Chapter 7: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Lily's Father
By the time Michael and I reached the house, Vanessa's car was parked across the driveway.
The front door stood open.
Inside, I heard raised voices.
“You promised me you would never tell him!”” Vanessa shouted.
Lily answered, crying.
“I didn't tell him anything! He found the letter!””
“Then you should have kept your mouth shut!””
I entered the hallway.
“That's enough.””
Vanessa turned so quickly that the handbag slipped from her shoulder.
Her eyes moved from me to Michael.
For the first time since our confrontation began, she looked genuinely afraid.
“You brought him here?””
“He's my brother.””
“You have no right to bring him into this.””
Michael stepped forward.
“I have every right to be here when we're talking about my daughter.””
Vanessa went white.
Lily stood near the staircase, clutching a backpack to her chest.
She looked at Michael as though she were seeing a ghost.
“Mom,” she whispered, “is he really my father?””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
No words came out.
Then she pointed at Michael.
“He abandoned you.””
“No,” Michael said.
“I was told you weren't mine. When I learned the truth, your mother threatened to destroy my life if I tried to see you.””
Vanessa let out a sharp laugh.
“That's a beautiful story. Did you rehearse it on the drive over?””
Michael didn't respond.
Instead, he placed the folder containing the settlement documents on the hallway table.
“I have copies of the agreement you made me sign. I have the altered paternity report. I have your emails. And I have the record of the eighty-five-thousand-dollar payment you claimed was for Lily.””
Vanessa's expression changed.
She looked at the folder as though it were a live wire.
“Those documents are private.””
“They concern my daughter.””
“They concern a relationship that ended years ago.””
“And yet you used that relationship to build a financial arrangement with my brother.””
She turned toward me.
“Daniel, he's lying. He's always been obsessed with me.””
I looked at Michael.
Then at Vanessa.
“Did you receive $85,000 from him?””
“I don't remember the exact amount.””
“Did you tell him he wasn't Lily's father?””
“He knew the situation was complicated.””
“Did you show him a paternity report?””
Vanessa's lips tightened.
“I don't have to answer these questions.””
“No,” I said.
“You don't. But I'm no longer going to accept your version of events without evidence.””
She took a step toward me.
“You think this is about money? You think I married you because of Ethan's trust?””
“Then explain the email to Paul Mercer.””
Her face drained of color.
I held up my phone and showed her the message.
For several seconds, she stared at it.
Then she whispered, “Where did you get that?””
“Michael's records.””
“You stole those.””
“He kept copies of documents he signed.””
Vanessa's hands began to tremble.
“You don't understand what happened.””
“Then explain it.””
She looked toward Lily.
“Not in front of her.””
Lily stepped away from the staircase.
“No. I want to hear it.””
Vanessa's expression hardened.
“You don't know what you're asking for.””
“I want to know why you lied to me.””
Her voice broke on the final word.
For a moment, Vanessa seemed to struggle with herself.
Then she sat down on the bottom step.
“I was young,” she began.
“I had no money. Lily's father was supposed to help me, and he didn't. I was terrified of raising her alone.””
Michael shook his head.
“I offered to help.””
“You offered to help when it suited you.””
“I gave you eighty-five thousand dollars.””
“And you made me feel like I owed you for the rest of my life!””
“I never asked you to sign away your daughter's future.””
“You asked me to let you into her life!””
“Because I'm her father!””
Lily covered her mouth.
Vanessa looked at her daughter, and something in her expression softened.
“Lily, I did what I thought was best for you.””
“You told me my father didn't want me.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“From what?””
Vanessa began to cry.
“From being hurt.””
Lily stared at her.
“You made me believe I wasn't wanted.””
Vanessa reached for her.
Lily stepped back.
The movement seemed to hurt Vanessa more than any accusation could have.
I stood near the doorway, struggling to reconcile the woman sitting on the stairs with the woman I had married.
She had spent years telling Lily a story designed to protect her from rejection.
But she had also used that story to control her daughter, manipulate my brother, and justify her demands on Ethan's trust.
Her fear might have been real.
Her choices had been real, too.
“Vanessa,” I said, “I need to ask you something about Richard Hale.””
She looked up sharply.
“Why?””
“Because I received a photograph of you standing with him outside a courthouse.””
Her face went still.
“Who sent it?””
“I don't know.””
“Show me.””
I handed her the phone.
She looked at the photograph, and her lips parted.
Then she closed her eyes.
“Richard didn't abandon us,” she whispered.
Michael stared at her.
“What?””
“He didn't disappear because he didn't want Lily. He left because I asked him to.””
Lily made a small, broken sound.
Vanessa looked at her daughter.
“Richard and I had a terrible relationship. He was controlling, and we fought constantly. When I became pregnant, he wanted to decide everything.
Where we lived. Who I spoke to. How I raised you.””
“Then why did you tell me he abandoned us?”” Lily asked.
“Because I wanted you to believe we were better off without him.””
“Were we?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
Michael stepped closer.
“Did Richard know Lily was mine?””
Vanessa looked down.
“No.””
“Did you tell him?””
“No.””
“Did you tell him the paternity test showed I wasn't the father?””
She nodded.
Michael's face tightened.
“You told both of us different stories.””
“I was trying to keep my family together.””
“You were trying to keep control.””
Vanessa flinched.
For a moment, no one spoke.
Then Lily walked toward Michael.
She stopped a few feet away.
“Did you know about me when I was little?””
“Yes,” Michael said softly.
“I knew you existed. I thought you weren't mine, but I cared about you anyway. When I learned the truth, I tried to contact you.””
“Why didn't you come looking for me?””
He lowered his head.
“Because I was afraid. Your mother threatened to make things worse for you if I interfered. I thought staying away would protect you.””
Lily's eyes filled with tears.
“So everybody just decided what was best for me without asking me?””
Michael swallowed.
“Yes.””
She turned away, crying.
Vanessa stood.
“Lily, please.””
“No!””
The shout startled all of us.
Lily wiped her face with her sleeve.
“You made me accuse Ethan of something he didn't do. You told me he was dangerous. You told me Dad would never believe me. You made me think I had to take his money because nobody would ever give me anything.””
Vanessa reached for her.
“I was trying to make sure you had a future.””
“Then why did you take the money Uncle Michael gave you?””
Vanessa froze.
Lily looked at Michael.
“Did she really get eighty-five thousand dollars?””
“Yes.””
“Where did it go?””
Michael didn't answer.
Vanessa did.
“Some of it went toward your upbringing.””
“Some?””
She looked away.
Lily's voice became very quiet.
“Where did the rest go?””
Vanessa pressed her lips together.
I could see the old calculation returning to her face. She was searching for an explanation that would preserve her authority.
But Lily wasn't listening to explanations anymore.
She was looking at her mother as if every memory of her childhood had suddenly become uncertain.
Finally, Vanessa whispered, “I used some of it to pay debts.””
“What debts?””
“Things you don't need to worry about.””
Lily shook her head.
“You always say that when you don't want to tell me the truth.””
Vanessa's shoulders slumped.
For the first time, she looked exhausted rather than furious.
I wanted to feel sympathy.
Part of me did.
But I also remembered Ethan sitting on his bed, terrified that his father would believe a lie and send him away.
I remembered the forged agreement.
The missing documents.
The demand that I choose between the children.
Vanessa had been willing to destroy Ethan's sense of security because she believed his inheritance could solve her problems.
And she had nearly succeeded.
“Vanessa,” I said, “you need to stay away from Ethan while we sort this out. I also need you to stop making financial requests in my name and stop contacting the trustee about his trust.””
She looked at me.
“You're giving me orders now?””
“I'm setting boundaries.””
“I'm your wife.””
“And Ethan is my son.””
She laughed bitterly.
“There it is. You always come back to him.””
“Because you keep making him the price of every agreement.””
Her eyes filled again.
“Where am I supposed to go?””
“You can stay with your sister while we work through the next steps. I'm not asking you to disappear. But I won't let this continue.””
She stared at me for a long moment.
Then she turned toward Lily.
“Come with me.””
Lily shook her head.
“I want to stay here tonight.””
Vanessa's face hardened.
“You're choosing them over your own mother?””
Lily looked at the floor.
“No. I'm choosing not to be forced to choose.””
The words landed with such quiet force that even Vanessa had no immediate answer.
Then she grabbed her handbag and walked toward the door.
Before leaving, she turned to me.
“You think you've won.””
“I don't think this is a game.””
She smiled through her tears.
“Then you really don't know me.””
The door slammed behind her.
For several seconds, none of us moved.
Then Lily sank onto the sofa and began to cry.
Michael sat beside her, but he didn't touch her until she reached for his hand.
I went upstairs to check on Ethan.
He was standing outside his bedroom, listening.
“Is she gone?”” he asked.
“Yes.””
He looked past me toward the staircase.
“Is Lily okay?””
I stared at my son.
After everything that had happened, he was still worried about her.
“She'll need time.””
He nodded.
Then he asked, “Is Uncle Michael really her father?””
“Yes.””
Ethan absorbed that in silence.
“Does that mean Vanessa isn't my stepmother anymore?””
The question hurt.
I rested a hand on his shoulder.
“Whatever happens between Vanessa and me, you haven't done anything wrong. And Lily hasn't, either. The adults are responsible for the choices they've made.””
He looked at me.
“Are you going to send Lily away?””
“No.””
He nodded slowly.
“Good.””
I studied his face.
“You're not angry with her?””
“I'm angry about what she did. But I know what it's like to be told you're the problem when you don't understand what's happening.””
He glanced toward the living room.
“Maybe she was scared, too.””
I hugged him.
For the first time in days, I felt a little hope.
Perhaps the children could find their way through the wreckage the adults had created.
Perhaps we could establish the truth and begin rebuilding.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message from Martin Bennett.
*Daniel, I reviewed the records you sent. The settlement agreement appears to contain a significant inconsistency. Please call me immediately.*
I stepped into my office and called him.
He answered at once.
“I've compared the documents from Michael with the records we have concerning Ethan's trust,” he said.
“There's a connection we need to discuss.””
“What connection?””
“The financial adviser named in Michael's settlement, Paul Mercer, was also involved in the initial administration of the investment account that funded part of Ethan's trust.””
I gripped the desk.
“What are you saying?””
“I'm saying we need to establish whether any of the funds were improperly transferred before the trust was finalized. I cannot tell you that happened. But the records raise a question that deserves an independent review.””
I closed my eyes.
Claire had suspected Vanessa was connected to the trust.
Michael had paid Vanessa a substantial sum.
Vanessa had tried to obtain control of Ethan's inheritance.
Now the same financial adviser appeared in both stories.
“Martin,” I said, “I need to know whether my son's money is safe.””
“So do I. We'll have to trace the transactions.””
He paused.
“There's one more thing. The original trust agreement you said was missing may not be the only document Vanessa was trying to locate.””
“What else?””
“A separate memorandum concerning the source of the initial funds.””
I felt cold.
“Where is it?””
“The copy in our file is incomplete. The original appears to have been signed by Claire and witnessed by someone named Richard Hale.””
I stared at the wall.
Richard Hale.
The man Vanessa had claimed abandoned her daughter.
The man who had apparently known something about my first wife's financial arrangements.
And now, somehow, his name was connected to the trust that Vanessa had been trying to access.
I thanked Martin and ended the call.
Then I went back downstairs.
Lily was asleep on the sofa, exhausted from crying. Michael sat in the armchair beside her, watching over her as though he were afraid she might disappear if he looked away.
I stood in the doorway.
“Michael,” I whispered, “we need to talk about Richard Hale.””
He looked up.
His expression changed immediately.
“What about him?””
I told him what Martin had found.
When I finished, Michael stared at the floor.
Then he reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a folded photograph.
It showed Claire standing outside a courthouse, holding a folder against her chest.
Beside her stood Richard Hale.
On the back, in Claire's handwriting, were five words.
*He knows what Vanessa did.*
Michael looked at me.
“I was hoping you wouldn't have to see this.””
“Why?””
He swallowed.
“Because Richard didn't just know Vanessa's secret.””
May you like
He looked toward Lily, then back at me.
“He knew why Claire was investigating her.””
