Chapter 5: The Child My Wife Never Told Me About
For several seconds, I remained frozen on the staircase.
The house was quiet except for Vanessa's voice drifting through the half-open bedroom door.
“If he finds the original papers, everything falls apart,” she whispered.
“No, I haven't told Lily. She thinks this is only about the trust.””
A pause.
Then Vanessa said something that made my stomach turn.
“Because if Daniel discovers who Lily's father really is, he'll understand why I couldn't let Ethan keep that money.””
I gripped the banister.
Who Lily's father really was?
I had met Lily's biological father once, years before our wedding. Vanessa had shown me a photograph of him, a man named Richard Hale, who had supposedly abandoned her and Lily when the girl was eight. According to Vanessa, Richard had moved overseas, stopped paying child support, and refused every attempt to reconnect.
I had never liked the man from the few details I knew, but I had accepted Vanessa's account.
Why wouldn't I?
She had cried while telling me about the years she spent raising Lily alone. She had described working two jobs, skipping meals, and selling jewelry to pay for school supplies.
I had believed her.
Now I wondered whether the story had been designed to make me believe something else.
I backed away from the bedroom door before the floorboard beneath my foot could betray me.
Downstairs, I locked myself in my office and called my attorney, Martin Bennett.
He answered on the second ring.
“Daniel, I received your email. Are you all right?””
“I need you to check something for me. I need every record connected to my marriage to Vanessa, particularly anything involving Lily's parentage or adoption.””
There was a pause.
“That's a rather specific request.””
“I just overheard my wife talking about original adoption papers. She also said I would discover who Lily's father really is.””
Martin exhaled slowly.
“Did Vanessa adopt Lily through a formal proceeding?””
“No. Lily was already her daughter when we met. Vanessa said Richard Hale was the biological father.””
“And you never saw a birth certificate?””
“I saw a copy when we were arranging school and medical paperwork. I never had a reason to question it.””
“Then we should begin by establishing which documents exist and who has authority to access them. I can help you identify the appropriate records and explain the legal process.””
“Martin, my wife has been trying to obtain money from my son's trust. She presented a document with my forged signature. Now I have reason to believe she concealed information about Lily's parentage.””
“I understand. Preserve everything you have. Don't confront her based on a conversation you overheard.
And don't attempt to obtain private records unlawfully. We'll work through the proper channels.””
I thanked him and ended the call.
Then I opened the email account Vanessa had allegedly used to request a copy of Ethan's trust agreement.
The request had been sent from my account, but I hadn't written it.
I checked the login history.
There had been an access from our home network at 11:18 p.m. three nights earlier, when I had been asleep. Another login appeared at 2:07 a.m. the following morning.
Both were from the same device I used at home.
I checked the sent folder.
The request was still there.
It contained a sentence that made my hands go cold.
Please provide the original trust agreement and any associated beneficiary documentation, as I need to reconcile the inheritance with the financial arrangements made before my marriage.
Before my marriage.
That was an odd phrase.
I hadn't written it, and I didn't speak about our wedding in that manner.
I forwarded the email to Martin, then walked upstairs.
Vanessa was standing in the bedroom, folding clothes into a suitcase.
She looked up when I entered.
“Are you satisfied now?”” she asked.
“You've made your point. Ethan can stay. Lily can stay. You can have your perfect little family.””
“I don't want a perfect family. I want an honest one.””
She shoved a blouse into the suitcase.
“Honesty? That's rich coming from you.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means you've spent two years making me feel like I married a man who was already married to his dead wife's memory.””
I looked at the suitcase.
“Are you leaving?””
“Maybe.””
“Before you do, I want to ask you something.””
She laughed bitterly.
“Another interrogation?””
“Who is Lily's biological father?””
Her hands stopped moving.
For several seconds, she didn't turn around.
Then she resumed folding.
“Richard Hale.””
“Are you certain?””
She spun toward me.
“What kind of question is that?””
“An ordinary one, given what I heard you say on the phone.””
Her face drained of color.
“You were listening to my private conversation?””
“I heard you say that if I discovered the original adoption papers, I would learn who Lily's father really was.””
Vanessa stared at me.
Then she closed the suitcase.
“Get out.””
“This is my bedroom, too.””
“Then leave me alone in it.””
“Vanessa, if Richard isn't Lily's father, I need to know.””
She walked toward me, her voice dropping to a whisper.
“You don't know what you're asking.””
“Then explain it.””
“You'll destroy Lily's life.””
“I'm trying to understand what is happening in my own family.””
“Your family?”” She laughed, but tears had begun to gather in her eyes.
“You mean Ethan. That's the only person you have ever cared about protecting.””
“That's not true.””
“Then prove it.””
“How?””
“Sign the agreement. Put some of Ethan's trust toward Lily's college expenses. Show me that you can love someone without treating everything your first wife left behind as sacred.””
I stared at her.
“You're asking me to sign a financial agreement while refusing to answer a question about your daughter's parentage.””
“Because the two things are connected.””
“How?””
She pressed her lips together.
For a moment, I thought she might finally tell me.
Instead, she picked up her phone.
“If you keep digging, I will make sure Lily never forgives you.””
“Lily deserves the truth.””
“You don't get to decide that.””
“I'm not trying to control her life. I'm trying to understand why you've been lying.””
Vanessa grabbed the suitcase handle.
“You think you're a good man because you refuse to give up your son's money. But you have no idea what I've sacrificed for my daughter.””
She brushed past me.
I let her go.
I didn't want another argument. I wanted answers.
Twenty minutes later, I found Lily in the guest room, sitting on the bed with her knees drawn to her chest.
“Your mother says she's leaving,” I told her.
Lily looked up.
“Is it because of me?””
“No. The choices your mother makes are her responsibility.””
She looked down again.
“Can I ask you something?””
“Of course.””
“Do you think I'm a bad person?””
I sat on the edge of the bed.
“I think you've been put in a situation where you've made some bad choices. That doesn't mean your entire character is defined by them.””
She rubbed her eyes.
“Mom says people will always judge me because I'm not really part of your family.””
I felt a dull ache in my chest.
“You are part of this family. Whether or not your mother and I remain married, that doesn't change the care I've tried to give you.””
“But what if you find out something bad about me?””
“Then we'll talk about it.””
She hesitated.
“Mom told me Richard was my father. But she also said I should never ask him for anything because he abandoned us.””
“Have you ever met him?””
“Once. When I was little. I barely remember him.””
“Did he ever contact you?””
Lily shook her head.
“Mom said he didn't want me.””
She began twisting the cuff of her sweatshirt.
“But last month, I found a letter in her desk. It had my name on it. It was from a man called Michael.””
My heart started beating faster.
“What did the letter say?””
“I only saw the first page. He said he wanted to speak to me before I turned eighteen. Mom took it away when she caught me reading it.””
“Did you recognize the name?””
“No.””
“Did you ask your mother about it?””
“She said he was nobody.””
I looked toward the window.
Michael.
The name meant nothing to me.
But Vanessa's whispered words returned with terrible clarity.
If Daniel discovers who Lily's father really is, he'll understand why I couldn't let Ethan keep that money.
“Lily,” I said, “I need you to understand something. Whatever we discover, you are not responsible for your mother's decisions. You don't have to take sides.””
She nodded slowly.
Then she reached beneath the pillow and pulled out a folded piece of paper.
“I took this from the envelope before Mom found me.””
I opened it.
It was a photocopy of a letter addressed to Vanessa, dated six months before our wedding.
The letter began:
Vanessa, I know you told me the matter was settled, but I cannot continue pretending I don't know about my daughter.
The signature at the bottom read:
*Michael Carter.*
My surname.
My brother's name.
I read it twice.
Michael was my younger brother. He lived in Colorado, worked as an engineer, and had spent the last five years rebuilding his life after a bitter divorce. He had been at my wedding. He had held Lily's hand during the ceremony and toasted our future at the reception.
I remembered him telling me how happy he was that I had found someone who loved me.
I remembered Vanessa thanking him for welcoming Lily.
And I remembered something else.
Three months before my wedding, Michael had abruptly canceled a planned visit. When I called him, he said he had a personal problem he needed to resolve. He had sounded ashamed, but he hadn't explained why.
I had assumed it was related to his divorce.
Now I was staring at a letter suggesting he had a daughter.
A daughter named Lily.
My phone rang.
Michael's name appeared on the screen.
I answered immediately.
“Michael.””
His voice sounded strained.
“Daniel. I need to talk to you.””
“About Lily?””
Silence.
Then he whispered, “You've found the letter.””
I closed my eyes.
“Is Lily your daughter?””
He took a shaky breath.
“Yes.””
The room seemed to shrink around me.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because Vanessa begged me not to.””
“She told me Lily's father abandoned them.””
“I know.””
“Did you abandon her?””
“No, Daniel. I didn't.””
His voice broke.
“I was told she wasn't mine. Vanessa said she'd had a test done and that Richard was the father. She told me if I tried to interfere, she'd destroy my career and make sure I never saw the child.””
I stared at the letter.
“Then why did you write to her?””
“Because I found out the truth.””
“When?””
“Six months before your wedding.””
I gripped the phone.
“Michael, what did Vanessa do?””
He was silent for several seconds.
Then he said, “She made me sign something. And if you find the original, you'll understand why she was so desperate to get her hands on Ethan's trust.””
The call disconnected.
I tried calling back, but it went straight to voicemail.
I looked at Lily.
She was watching me with frightened eyes.
“Is Michael my father?””
I couldn't bring myself to answer immediately.
Not because I didn't believe my brother.
But because the implications were larger than either of us could yet understand.
I looked down at the letter again.
At the bottom, beneath Michael's signature, someone had written a short note in Vanessa's handwriting.
*If Daniel ever learns the truth, neither child will be safe.*
And suddenly, I understood that the battle over Ethan's inheritance had never been only about college tuition.
Vanessa wasn't simply trying to take money from my son.
