Chapter 5: The Man Waiting Outside
My father walked toward the entrance.
Vanessa rushed after him.
"Marcus, don't open that door.""
He stopped.
"Why?""
"Because he's nobody.""
The man outside knocked again.
"Vanessa! I know you're in there!""
My father turned around.
"Apparently, somebody thinks he's somebody.""
He unlocked the door.
A tall man in a charcoal coat stood on the porch.
He looked to be in his early forties. His hair was neatly styled, and he carried a black leather briefcase.
His eyes moved from Marcus to me.
Then they settled on Vanessa.
"You're supposed to be answering your phone," he said.
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
"Not now, Daniel.""
The man stepped inside without waiting for an invitation.
"Actually, now is exactly when.""
My father blocked his path.
"Who are you?""
Daniel offered a polite smile.
"Daniel Price. I'm a financial consultant.""
"Why are you coming to my house at eleven at night?""
Daniel glanced at Vanessa.
"Perhaps your wife should explain.""
My father looked at her.
"Go ahead.""
Vanessa folded her arms.
"Daniel helped me manage some investments.""
I held up the bank notification.
"Was he helping you move my inheritance?""
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"Who are you?""
"Ethan Cole.""
Something changed in his expression.
He looked at Vanessa.
Then back at me.
"Oh.""
I took a step forward.
"What's that supposed to mean?""
Daniel placed his briefcase on the console table.
"Nothing personal.""
"Then answer the question.""
He glanced at Marcus.
"Mr. Cole, your wife has been managing a restructuring arrangement involving several assets. My firm has been providing administrative support.""
My father stared at him.
"With whose authorization?""
Daniel opened the briefcase.
He removed a document.
"Yours.""
He placed it on the table.
It was a copy of the beneficiary control agreement.
Marcus looked at it.
"That's not the original.""
"No, it's a certified copy.""
"Who certified it?""
Daniel named a notary.
My father shook his head.
"I never appeared before that notary.""
Daniel paused.
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
"Marcus, please don't start this again.""
He turned toward her.
"You told me this document was prepared by our attorney.""
"It was.""
"Then why is Daniel holding it?""
Daniel slowly closed the briefcase.
"I think there's been a misunderstanding.""
I laughed.
"Funny. That's what everyone says when the evidence starts appearing.""
Daniel looked at me.
"Listen, Ethan. This is a family matter. You don't understand the financial structure.""
"Then explain it.""
"You're not a party to the operating agreements.""
"My mother named me as the primary beneficiary.""
"Your mother is deceased.""
The words landed like a slap.
I took another step.
"And you're standing in my father's house discussing money that belongs to her estate.""
Daniel raised both hands.
"I'm not here to argue.""
"Then why are you here?""
He looked at Vanessa.
She stared at the floor.
Daniel sighed.
"The transfer to Redstone Capital was supposed to happen this morning.""
Marcus froze.
"What?""
Daniel opened his briefcase again.
"Your wife instructed us to move the remaining liquid assets before the review request became effective.""
My father looked at Vanessa.
"You said the transfer was already processing.""
Daniel frowned.
"It hasn't been completed.""
I checked the bank notification.
The status had changed.
<badge color="warning">Pending verification</badge>
The money had not left yet.
Vanessa looked at Daniel with unmistakable fury.
"You said you could complete it.""
"I said I could process it if the authorization was valid.""
"It is valid!""
Daniel glanced at Marcus.
"That's what we need to establish.""
My father sat heavily on the nearest chair.
I had never seen him look so defeated.
"How long has this been happening?"" he asked.
Daniel didn't respond.
"How long?""
Vanessa stepped between them.
"Marcus, you're making a mistake. Daniel has nothing to do with this.""
Daniel gave a short, humorless laugh.
"Vanessa, don't do that.""
She turned sharply.
"Don't do what?""
"Don't pretend you don't know me.""
My father stood again.
"Explain.""
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
Then he said, "Your wife and I have been working together for nearly two years.""
The silence was immediate.
I looked at Marcus.
His face had gone pale.
"Working together on what?""
"Asset management. Corporate restructuring. Property acquisitions.""
"Only business?""
Daniel hesitated.
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
"Daniel.""
He ignored her.
"Mr. Cole, I think you deserve to know that several of the properties purchased through Vantage Holdings were not business assets.""
Marcus's voice became quieter.
"What were they?""
"Private residences.""
"Whose residences?""
Daniel opened a file.
He removed photographs.
A modern house overlooking the water.
A luxury apartment in Manhattan.
A villa in Florida.
He spread them across the table.
"These properties were purchased using funds transferred from the trust.""
My father stared at the photographs.
"Who owns them?""
"Vantage Holdings.""
"Who controls Vantage Holdings?""
Daniel glanced at Vanessa.
"Your wife.""
I watched my father's expression collapse.
He had spent three years defending a woman who had apparently built an entire financial world behind his back.
But something still bothered me.
I looked at Daniel.
"Why are you telling us this?""
He turned toward me.
"Because I'm not interested in being blamed for a transaction I was instructed to process.""
"You're involved.""
"Yes. And I've brought documents proving what I did and what I was instructed to do.""
Vanessa laughed.
"He's lying.""
Daniel removed a small flash drive from his briefcase.
"These are the transaction records.""
He placed it on the table.
Then he took out a printed email.
"Here is the instruction to transfer the seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars.""
Marcus picked it up.
The email was addressed to Daniel.
The sender was Vanessa.
The subject line read:
FINAL TRANSFER — BEFORE THE REVIEW.
I read the message.
Vanessa had instructed Daniel to move the remaining money into Redstone Capital and close the original account.
But there was one line that made my stomach tighten.
Once the transfer clears, Marcus will have no access to the trust records. Ethan can be dealt with separately.
My father read it twice.
Then he looked at his wife.
"Dealt with separately?""
Vanessa's face hardened.
"It was a business email.""
"Was I supposed to lose access to my own company?""
"Marcus—"
"Was my son supposed to lose his inheritance?""
She took a step toward him.
"Everything I did was for us.""
"For us?""
"Yes!""
He shook his head.
"You stole from my wife's estate.""
"I kept your business alive!""
"You lied to me!""
"I protected you!""
She pointed at me.
"He's the reason everything is falling apart! Ever since he came back, you've been questioning every decision I make!""
I stared at her.
"Because you keep getting caught.""
She turned toward Daniel.
"Give me the flash drive.""
He didn't move.
"Daniel.""
"No.""
"I said give it to me.""
He picked up the drive and placed it in his pocket.
"I've had enough.""
Vanessa's voice dropped.
"You know what happens if those files leave this house.""
Daniel looked at her.
"I know what happens if they don't.""
Then he turned to Marcus.
"I have one more document.""
He removed a thin envelope from his briefcase.
"This is a copy of the original trust amendment. The version your wife provided to us was different.""
Marcus frowned.
"Different how?""
Daniel opened the envelope.
He placed two documents side by side.
Both carried my father's signature.
But the clauses were different.
The first document allowed Vanessa to manage certain assets temporarily.
The second transferred permanent control over the entire trust.
My father examined them.
"I never signed the second version.""
Daniel nodded.
"That's what I suspected.""
I felt my heart begin to race.
"Are you saying someone changed the document after Dad signed it?""
Daniel looked at me.
"I'm saying the copy provided to our office contains a clause that doesn't appear in the original.""
Vanessa moved toward the papers.
Marcus pulled them away.
"Don't touch them.""
She stopped.
Then she looked at my father.
"You don't understand what you're doing.""
He shook his head.
"No. I think I'm finally starting to.""
Daniel took out his phone.
"There's another problem.""
My father closed his eyes.
"What now?""
"The bank has flagged the transfer. They're requesting confirmation from the original trustee.""
Marcus looked up.
"That's me.""
"Correct.""
Daniel turned his phone around.
A message from the bank appeared.
They needed Marcus to confirm the transfer personally.
And beneath the request was a warning:
Any disputed authorization would trigger an immediate review of all associated accounts.
Vanessa read it.
Then she looked at Marcus.
"Don't approve anything.""
My father stared at her.
"Why?""
"Because if the bank reviews everything, the company will collapse.""
I looked at her.
"Then maybe it should.""
She stepped toward me.
"You have no idea what you're risking.""
I held her gaze.
"Neither did my mother when she trusted you.""
For a moment, she looked as though she might slap me.
Instead, she turned toward my father.
"Marcus, if you do this, you will lose everything.""
He looked at the bank message.
Then at the photographs of the properties.
Then at the email describing how she planned to remove his access.
He picked up his phone.
And pressed CONFIRM DISPUTE.
<badge color="success">Transfer frozen for review</badge>
Vanessa stared at the screen.
Her mouth fell open.
"What did you do?""
Marcus placed the phone down.
"I stopped you.""
She took a step backward.
Then another.
And suddenly, she began laughing.
Not nervously.
Not hysterically.
She laughed as if the entire evening had been a joke.
My father frowned.
"What is so funny?""
Vanessa wiped the corner of her eye.
"You really think you've won?""
Marcus didn't respond.
She reached into her purse.
And pulled out a second phone.
A phone I had never seen before.
She unlocked it.
Then held it up.
"There's one thing you haven't checked.""
She tapped a message thread.
And turned the screen toward me.
The sender's name made my stomach drop.
Sophie Bennett.
The message read:
He doesn't know about the original recording. Make sure Ethan never gets it.
I looked at the screen.
Then at Vanessa.
"What original recording?""
May you like
She smiled.
"The one your mother made before she died.""
