Chapter 1: The Woman Who Wanted Me Gone

"You're leaving this house tonight.""

Vanessa whispered those words while staring directly into my eyes. Then she grabbed the front of her expensive red dress and ripped it down the middle.

I stood frozen beside the dining table.

On it sat a thick stack of cash and a sealed envelope bearing my name.

For three seconds, neither of us moved.

Then Vanessa screamed.

And my father came running.

My name is Ethan Cole. I was twenty-six years old, and until that night, I still believed my father knew the difference between his son and a liar.

Apparently, I was wrong.

My father, Marcus Cole, had married Vanessa three years earlier. She was ten years younger than him, beautiful in the carefully maintained way that required expensive skincare, designer clothes, and a personal trainer.

She had also perfected the art of making everyone believe she was the victim.

When she first moved into our house, she called me sweetheart.

Six months later, she called me ungrateful.

By the second year, she had convinced my father that I was irresponsible, disrespectful, and incapable of managing my own life.

But she never did anything openly cruel when Marcus was watching.

That was her greatest talent.

She knew exactly when to smile.

And exactly when to strike.

"Vanessa?"" I asked, glancing at the torn fabric.

"What are you doing?""

She pressed one hand against her chest.

"Don't come closer.""

I looked at the cash.

"What is this?""

"Don't pretend you don't know.""

"Know what?""

She laughed bitterly, then snatched the sealed envelope from the table.

"You really thought I wouldn't find out?""

"Find out what?""

She threw the envelope down.

It slid across the polished wood and stopped against my hand.

My name was written across the front.

ETHAN COLE.

I picked it up.

"What is this?""

"Your little arrangement.""

"What arrangement?""

Vanessa's eyes flickered toward the hallway.

Then she lowered her voice.

"Your father has spent years protecting you. Paying your bills. Cleaning up your mistakes. And now you've decided to steal from him?""

I stared at her.

"Are you serious?""

She pointed at the money.

"Thirty thousand dollars. That's what you took.""

I looked at the stack.

Then back at her.

"I haven't touched that money.""

"Of course you haven't.""

"I just walked in here.""

"Stop lying!""

Her voice suddenly rose.

I took a step backward.

"Vanessa, calm down.""

She grabbed the torn edges of her dress and pulled them farther apart.

The sound of fabric ripping echoed through the dining room.

I stared at her.

"What the hell are you doing?""

She slapped her own cheek.

Hard.

Then she stumbled backward into the dining chair.

I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

"Vanessa!""

She screamed again.

"Help! Marcus!""

My stomach dropped.

I understood then.

She wasn't having a breakdown.

She was putting on a performance.

And I had just been given the role of the villain.

The heavy footsteps came from upstairs.

My father appeared in the doorway, still wearing his reading glasses and a navy sweater.

"What's happening?""

Vanessa ran toward him.

She grabbed his arm with both hands.

"Marcus! Your son attacked me!""

My father looked at her dress.

Then at her face.

Then at me.

His expression changed.

"What?""

Vanessa pointed at me with a trembling finger.

"He came downstairs, demanded money, and when I refused, he grabbed me!""

"That's not true," I said immediately.

Marcus's jaw tightened.

"Did you touch her?""

"No.""

"Marcus, look at my dress!"" Vanessa cried.

"Look what he did!""

I raised both hands.

"She tore it herself. I watched her.""

Vanessa gasped as if I had slapped her again.

"You're blaming me?""

"Because you did it!""

My father stepped between us.

"Enough, Ethan.""

"Dad, listen to me.""

"Did you take that money?""

"No.""

"Then why is it on the table?""

"I don't know.""

Vanessa buried her face against his shoulder.

"Please don't let him near me.""

I watched my father's arm wrap around her.

The same arm that used to lift me onto his shoulders when I was a little boy.

The same hand that had taught me how to throw a baseball.

Now it was holding her while he looked at me like I was a stranger.

"Dad, she's setting me up.""

Marcus's face hardened.

"Watch your mouth.""

"Just look at the situation. The money was already here. That envelope has my name on it. She was waiting for me.""

Vanessa shook her head dramatically.

"He's been threatening me for months.""

I stared at her.

"Months?""

She nodded against my father's chest.

"Ever since I told him he couldn't keep living here without contributing.""

That was another lie.

I had been paying for my own expenses and contributing to the household since I returned from Chicago eight months earlier.

I had even covered several of my father's medical bills when his business had struggled.

But Vanessa never mentioned those things.

She preferred a different version of me.

The lazy stepson.

The jealous young man.

The dangerous problem living under her roof.

My father suddenly released her.

"Give me your phone.""

I frowned.

"Why?""

"Because I'm calling the police.""

Vanessa's eyes widened.

Then she quickly looked away.

Something about that tiny movement caught my attention.

She hadn't expected him to call anyone.

"Fine," I said.

"Call them.""

Marcus pulled his phone from his pocket.

But before he could unlock it, Vanessa whispered something into his ear.

I couldn't hear every word.

I caught only one sentence.

"Think about what this will do to your reputation.""

My father stopped.

That was when I realized she wasn't simply afraid of being exposed.

She was afraid of something specific.

Something that had been planned.

I glanced around the dining room.

The cash.

The envelope.

The torn dress.

The overturned chair.

Everything was arranged too neatly for a genuine struggle.

Then I looked upward.

Above the dining table, almost invisible against the dark wooden ceiling, was a small black security camera.

Its red indicator light blinked once.

I felt my pulse slow.

Three months earlier, after someone had broken into the house, my father had installed cameras throughout the main floor.

He had shown me how to access the recordings.

Vanessa had complained about them for weeks.

She said they made the house feel like a prison.

But Marcus refused to remove them.

I looked at my father.

"Dad.""

"What?""

"The camera.""

His eyes followed mine.

For the first time that evening, he looked uncertain.

Vanessa immediately straightened.

"What camera?""

"The one above the table," I said.

My father stared at the device.

Then he looked at the cash.

His expression shifted.

"Let's see the recording.""

Vanessa's face lost its color.

"Marcus, don't.""

He took out his phone.

"Why not?""

She tightened her grip around his arm.

"Because we don't need to turn this into something bigger.""

I almost laughed.

She had just accused me of assaulting her, and now she didn't want evidence?

My father opened the security application.

The screen displayed a list of cameras.

DINING ROOM.

KITCHEN.

FRONT ENTRANCE.

HALLWAY.

He tapped DINING ROOM.

A loading circle appeared.

Vanessa stepped closer.

"Marcus, please.""

The recording began loading.

My father looked at me.

I looked at Vanessa.

For the first time since she entered our family, she wasn't smiling.

May you like

And when the video finally appeared, she grabbed my father's wrist.

"Don't play that video!""
