Chapter 3: The Teddy Bear That Never Forgot

I stopped halfway down the staircase.

My father's voice drifted up from the living room, quiet but unmistakable.

“Maybe it's time we asked her to leave.””

For a few seconds, I couldn't move.

My hand tightened around the wooden railing. Inside my hoodie pocket, Theodore's worn fabric pressed against my fingers.

I had spent my entire life believing that my father would always be the one person who wouldn't abandon me.

Now I was hearing him discuss throwing me out of the only home I had ever known.

Vanessa answered him in a soothing voice.

“I don't want to hurt Emma, David. I really don't. But she needs to understand that she's an adult.””

“I know.””

“She can't expect us to support her forever.””

“I know, Vanessa.””

“And I won't tolerate being disrespected in my own home.””

There was a pause.

Then Dad said, “I'll talk to her.””

I closed my eyes.

That was all it took.

Three years of marriage, and Vanessa had convinced my father that protecting his daughter was somehow an act of betrayal against his wife.

I turned and walked back into my bedroom.

I shut the door quietly and sat at my desk.

My laptop was still open from the previous evening. Beside it sat a half-empty mug of coffee and a stack of papers from the marketing agency where I worked.

Ordinary things.

A life I had been trying to build.

I pulled Theodore from my pocket and placed him under the desk lamp.

The tiny black lens was still there.

I opened the drawer where I kept old electronics and found a small screwdriver, a charging cable, and an adapter from the box of equipment Dad had given me years ago.

My hands shook as I examined the bear's back.

The stitching had been repaired recently. Someone had opened the seam and sewn it closed again with thread that was slightly darker than the original.

I knew I hadn't done that.

I carefully separated a few stitches.

Inside, beneath the stuffing, sat a small rectangular module.

A microSD card was tucked into its side.

I held my breath.

“Please work,” I whispered.

I connected the device to my laptop.

Nothing happened.

I tried another cable.

A small indicator light blinked once.

Then the laptop displayed a new drive.

My heart began to pound.

I opened the folder.

Several video files appeared on the screen, each labeled with a date and time.

Some were old.

Some were recent.

I clicked the newest file.

The screen showed a slightly crooked view of my bedroom shelf. The angle was low, but the camera captured most of the room and part of the doorway.

The footage lasted eleven minutes.

I watched myself entering the room the previous afternoon, dropping my bag beside the bed, and changing clothes.

I immediately closed the file.

The camera was recording more than I had expected.

I checked the device settings and found that it had been configured to record motion, storing clips locally whenever it detected movement.

Who had reactivated it?

And why?

I opened an older file.

The image showed my bedroom from a slightly different angle. Vanessa walked into the room carrying a laundry basket.

She looked around, then approached my desk.

I leaned toward the screen.

Vanessa opened the drawer where I kept my personal documents.

She removed an envelope.

My stomach tightened.

I recognized it immediately.

It contained the paperwork for my late mother's life-insurance policy, which Dad had given me when I turned eighteen. Most of the money had been placed in a trust to help pay for my education and future housing.

I had kept the documents because the attorney had told me never to lose them.

Vanessa unfolded one of the pages.

Then she took a photograph of it with her phone.

I watched her slide the document into her handbag before leaving the room.

My mouth went dry.

I had never given her permission to touch those papers.

I opened another clip.

This one showed Vanessa standing beside my desk, speaking on her phone.

Her voice was clear enough to hear.

“Yes, I found the paperwork,” she said.

“No, David doesn't know I have it.””

I stopped breathing.

She paced in front of the desk.

“I'm telling you, once Emma is out of the house, it'll be much easier. David won't have her constantly asking questions.””

A pause.

Then she laughed softly.

“The trust isn't going anywhere. I'm not stupid enough to touch it directly.””

My fingers went cold.

The trust.

My mother's money.

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“I'm going to make David believe Emma wants to leave. Once she's gone, I'll convince him to put everything under one household account. He trusts me with the finances. He won't question a thing.””

The recording ended.

I stared at the screen.

For a moment, the room seemed to tilt around me.

This wasn't simply about rent.

Vanessa wanted me out because I was connected to something she couldn't control.

My mother's trust.

I opened another video.

It showed Vanessa sitting on my bed, holding a small stack of papers. She glanced toward the door, then spoke into her phone.

“If the girl keeps refusing, I'll make her life miserable until she has no choice.””

I pressed my hand over my mouth.

The next clip was dated three days earlier.

Vanessa stood near the bedroom door, speaking to someone I couldn't see.

“I don't care what David promised her,” she said.

“Promises don't mean anything if I can make him change his mind.””

Then she added something that made my entire body go still.

“Once she's out, I can finally deal with that old woman’s belongings. I'm tired of seeing Elizabeth everywhere.””

My mother.

Even in death, Mom was standing between Vanessa and the life she wanted.

I closed the video and sat back.

I had enough to prove that Vanessa had been lying about more than the argument.

But I still didn't know whether the footage of the slap had been recorded.

The camera's angle covered the doorway and most of the hallway beyond it, depending on how the bear was positioned.

I returned to the file list and searched for today's date.

There it was.

A clip recorded less than an hour earlier.

My hands trembled as I clicked it.

The footage began with Vanessa entering my room and removing my suitcase from beside the bed. She carried it into the hallway.

The camera's microphone picked up her voice.

“Two thousand dollars a month,” she said.

“That's the price of staying here.””

My own voice followed.

“I can't afford that, Vanessa.””

“Then leave.””

“I'll talk to Dad.””

“Your father doesn't run this house. I do.””

I leaned closer to the screen.

The recording continued.

Vanessa stepped toward me. I moved backward. She grabbed my wrist, and the camera captured the movement clearly.

Then came the slap.

I watched myself stumble sideways, one hand flying to my face.

Vanessa stood over me.

“Now perhaps you'll learn to respect me.””

My eyes filled with tears.

There it was.

The truth.

Not my word against hers.

Not a disagreement that could be explained away as a misunderstanding.

A recording.

I saved the file to my laptop, copied it to a separate folder, and backed it up to my cloud storage. Then I saved the other clips showing Vanessa taking my documents and discussing my mother's trust.

I checked the timestamps twice.

Everything was intact.

For the first time that night, I felt something stronger than fear.

I felt certain.

A knock sounded at my bedroom door.

I nearly dropped the laptop.

“Emma?”” Dad called.

I quickly disconnected the device and slipped the memory card into a small envelope.

“Just a second.””

I closed the laptop and opened the door.

Dad stood in the hallway, his tie loosened and his expression tired.

“Can we talk?””

I stepped aside.

He entered and looked around the room.

“Why are you sitting in the dark?””

“I wasn't.””

He glanced at the desk lamp, then at my face.

The red mark on my cheek had darkened.

His expression shifted.

“Emma, your face…”

I waited.

For one brief moment, I thought he might finally ask whether I was all right.

Instead, he sighed.

“You shouldn't have let things get this far.””

I stared at him.

“Let things get this far?””

“Your stepmother is upset. She feels disrespected in her own home.””

“Dad, she slapped me.””

He looked toward the closed door.

“Vanessa says she never touched you.””

I felt my fingers curl into my palms.

“Do you really believe that?””

He rubbed his jaw.

“I don't know what to believe anymore.””

I took a breath.

“Then let me show you.””

I opened the laptop and turned it toward him.

Dad frowned.

“What is this?””

“Footage from Theodore.””

He looked at the teddy bear sitting on my desk.

For a moment, something familiar crossed his face.

Recognition.

“You still have that old thing?””

“Yes.””

He picked up the bear, turning it over in his hands.

“I thought I disconnected the camera years ago.””

“You did. Or you thought you did.””

He examined the stitching.

“Where did you find the card?””

“Inside him.””

Dad set the bear down carefully.

“Emma, that footage may be old. It may not show what you think it shows.””

“Then let's watch it.””

He hesitated.

I clicked the file showing Vanessa entering my room.

For the next few minutes, neither of us spoke.

Dad watched Vanessa open my drawer, remove the insurance documents, and photograph them with her phone.

His face grew paler.

Then he heard her voice.

Once Emma is out of the house, it'll be much easier.

Dad leaned forward.

“What did she say?””

I replayed the clip.

He listened again.

This time, when Vanessa mentioned my mother's trust, his jaw tightened.

“Where did you get these files?””

“They were stored on the card. I only opened them tonight.””

He looked at me.

“Does Vanessa know about the camera?””

“I don't know.””

Dad turned back to the screen.

I played the recording of the slap.

When Vanessa's hand struck my face, Dad went completely still.

The room seemed to lose every sound except the faint hum of the laptop.

Then he whispered, “Oh, my God.””

I looked at him.

“Do you believe me now?””

He didn't answer immediately.

He watched the recording again, his fingers gripping the edge of my desk.

Then he stood.

“Where is Vanessa?””

“Downstairs.””

Dad walked toward the door.

“Stay here.””

“No.””

He stopped and turned.

“Emma, please.””

“You told me to apologize to her. You told me you would deal with it if it was true.”” My voice shook, but I kept going.

“Now you've seen it. I'm not staying upstairs while you decide whether this is serious.””

He looked at the bruise on my cheek.

For the first time that evening, I saw shame in his expression.

“You're right,” he said quietly.

We walked downstairs together.

Vanessa was in the living room, arranging flowers in a crystal vase. She had changed into a cream-colored sweater and tied her hair back. A glass of wine sat on the coffee table beside her phone.

She looked up as we entered.

“David, is everything all right?””

Dad didn't answer.

He held out his hand.

“Vanessa, I need you to come here.””

She put down the flowers.

“What's wrong?””

“Come here.””

Something in his voice made her straighten.

She approached us slowly.

Dad turned the laptop toward her.

“Do you recognize this?””

Vanessa glanced at the screen.

Her eyes moved across the image of herself opening my desk drawer.

For a fraction of a second, the color drained from her face.

Then she laughed.

“David, what is this supposed to be?””

“Answer the question.””

She folded her arms.

“It looks like someone has been recording me without my knowledge. That's a serious invasion of privacy.””

I stared at her.

“You took my mother's insurance documents.””

“I was organizing your room.””

“You put them in your handbag.””

“I was keeping them safe.””

“You told someone you wanted me out of the house so you could control the trust.””

Vanessa turned sharply toward Dad.

“Are you seriously letting her accuse me of stealing?””

Dad's voice hardened.

“I watched you take the documents.””

“You don't understand the context.””

“Then explain it.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

I stepped forward.

“And you slapped me.””

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

“Oh, for heaven's sake, Emma! Are you going to keep repeating that?””

“You can watch the video.””

She looked at the laptop.

For the first time since I had known her, Vanessa appeared genuinely frightened.

Dad slowly turned toward her.

“You told me she wanted to leave.””

“She did!””

“You told me you never touched her.””

“I was trying to calm her down!””

“The recording shows you striking her.””

Vanessa's breathing became shallow.

She looked at Dad, then at me, then at the laptop.

Finally, she forced a laugh.

“This is ridiculous. You can't trust a recording without knowing how it was made. Emma has been upset with me for years. She could have edited it.””

“I didn't edit anything,” I said.

“You expect me to believe that little toy somehow captured everything?””

I reached for Theodore and held him against my chest.

“It captured enough.””

Vanessa's face hardened.

Then she did something none of us expected.

She stepped toward me and reached for the bear.

“Give me that.””

I pulled it away.

“Don't touch him.””

“That's my husband's property!””

Dad moved between us.

“Vanessa, stop.””

She froze.

For several seconds, the three of us stood in the middle of the living room, surrounded by the expensive furniture Vanessa had chosen and the photographs she had carefully arranged to make this house look like a family home.

Then Dad looked at the laptop again.

“There's more footage, isn't there?””

I nodded.

Vanessa went pale.

Dad's voice dropped.

“Emma, show me everything.””

I opened the folder containing the remaining recordings.

The first clip showed Vanessa taking my mother's documents.

The second showed her discussing the trust.

The third showed her standing in my bedroom, speaking into her phone about making my life miserable until I left.

Dad watched without moving.

When the last recording ended, he closed the laptop slowly.

Then he turned toward his wife.

“Vanessa,” he said, “I have one question.””

She swallowed.

“What?””

He looked at her with an expression I had never seen before.

Not anger.

Not confusion.

Disgust.

“What exactly were you planning to do with Elizabeth's money?””

May you like

Vanessa opened her mouth.

And for the first time since she had entered our family, she had absolutely nothing to say.
