Chapter 8: The Truth Beneath the Family Name
Nobody slept that night.
Not because we were afraid.
Because every answer created another question.
The photograph sat on the table between us.
A piece of history nobody knew existed.
Jonathan kept staring at it.
“My uncle disappeared when I was a child.””
Claire nodded.
“Adrian Hayes.””
I looked at her.
“The voice on the phone.””
“Yes.””
Jonathan sat down.
“I thought he left the country.””
“He did.””
“Then how is he connected to this?””
Claire looked at the photo.
“Because Robert didn’t build Hayes Automotive alone.””
She pointed at Adrian.
“His brother helped create the company.””
Jonathan frowned.
“But my father became the face of everything.””
“Exactly.””
I studied the photograph.
Three men.
Three versions of the same story.
The genius.
The missing brother.
And me.
The employee who lost everything.
“What does Adrian want?”” I asked.
Claire looked at me.
“Control.””
Jonathan laughed bitterly.
“Of course.””
She continued.
“Your father pushed Adrian out years ago. He believed Robert stole his legacy.””
“And now?””
“Now he wants it back.””
Jonathan stood.
“By destroying the company?””
Claire shook her head.
“No.””
She looked at him.
“By taking it.””
The room went silent.
Then Jonathan’s phone buzzed.
A message.
He opened it.
His expression changed.
“What?””
He turned the phone around.
The message was from the company board.
*Emergency leadership vote scheduled tomorrow morning.*
Jonathan stared.
“That’s impossible.””
Claire read the message.
“Not anymore.””
Another message appeared.
This one from an unknown number.
*Ask yourself why your father chose you instead of his own brother.*
Jonathan looked angry.
“He’s playing games.””
“No,” I said.
Everyone looked at me.
“He’s trying to make you doubt yourself.””
Jonathan was quiet.
I understood manipulation.
I had lived through it.
“The goal isn’t just the company,” I continued.
“It’s you.””
Jonathan looked at me.
“What do you mean?””
“Your father built his reputation by controlling the story. Adrian is doing the same thing.””
Claire nodded slowly.
“He wants Jonathan to believe he was never meant to lead.””
The room became quiet.
Because that was the cruelest kind of attack.
Not destroying someone’s life.
Destroying their confidence.
Ethan walked into the room.
His hair was messy.
“Dad?””
I immediately softened.
“Hey buddy.””
“Are we still going home?””
I looked at him.
“Yes.””
“When?””
I paused.
“After we finish something important.””
He looked at Jonathan.
“Are you fixing the bad guys?””
Nobody expected that question.
Jonathan smiled faintly.
“I’m trying.””
Ethan nodded seriously.
“My dad says people who do bad things usually want everyone to think they’re right.””
The room went still.
Jonathan looked at me.
“You taught him that?””
I smiled.
“I teach him a lot of things.””
Jonathan looked back at Ethan.
“Your dad taught you well.””
For the first time since this nightmare began, I saw something different in Jonathan.
Not a billionaire.
Not a company owner.
Just a man trying to become better than the people who came before him.
Then Claire’s computer suddenly made a sound.
An alert.
She rushed over.
“What happened?””
She stared at the screen.
“What?””
Jonathan approached.
“What is it?””
Claire turned the laptop toward us.
A file had been opened remotely.
A file from Hayes Automotive’s old system.
A file containing the original Vale Project documents.
The ones proving I was innocent.
But there was something else.
A final page.
A page nobody had seen before.
Jonathan read the first line.
Then he looked at me.
“Michael…”
I stepped closer.
“What?””
His face was pale.
“The person who approved the forged report…”
I waited.
Jonathan swallowed.
“It wasn’t my father.””
The room froze.
“Then who was it?””
He turned the screen toward me.
And I saw the name.
A name I never expected.
May you like
A name that made me realize the betrayal had come from someone much closer than I thought.
