Chapter 6: The Man Everyone Called a Genius

Jonathan didn’t speak for several seconds.

“My father?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

The expression on his face changed.

Not anger.

Shock.

The kind of shock people feel when a piece of their childhood suddenly becomes a lie.

“My father died five years ago.””

“I know.””

“Then why would he be involved?””

I looked at him.

“Because he was alive when everything happened.””

Jonathan sat down slowly.

The powerful businessman who had controlled the room moments ago suddenly looked like a son hearing a painful truth.

“What did he do?””

I took a breath.

Eight years ago, Hayes Automotive was preparing to launch the most ambitious vehicle in its history.

The Vale Project.

A car designed to compete with the world’s most advanced electric vehicles.

Everyone wanted success.

Everyone wanted headlines.

Nobody wanted delays.

Except me.

During final testing, I discovered a battery cooling issue.

A serious one.

Under certain conditions, the system could overheat.

I brought the data to the executives.

They ignored it.

I went higher.

That was when I met Robert Hayes.

Jonathan’s father.

The man everyone called a genius.

“The first thing your father said to me was that I was talented,” I told Jonathan.

Jonathan listened carefully.

“Then he asked me a question.””

“What question?””

“Whether I wanted to be remembered as the man who saved the company…”

I paused.

“…or the man who destroyed it.””

Jonathan looked down.

“He threatened you.””

“Yes.””

Daniel quietly said:

“And you refused.””

I looked at him.

“I refused.””

I remembered that night.

The empty office.

The lights still on at midnight.

The report sitting on my desk.

A warning everyone wanted buried.

“I told him I wouldn’t approve the launch.””

“What happened after?””

“They created a new report.””

The room was silent.

“A report claiming I had approved the system.””

Jonathan clenched his fist.

“But why would anyone believe that?””

“Because they had my signature.””

The fake signature.

The same one sitting on the screen.

Jonathan stared at the document.

“You were framed.””

“Yes.””

A long silence followed.

Then Ethan spoke.

“But why didn’t you tell people?””

Everyone looked at him.

I smiled sadly.

“Because sometimes people don’t want the truth when the lie is more convenient.””

Ethan didn’t fully understand.

But Jonathan did.

He understood power.

He understood reputation.

He understood how easily someone could destroy a person without ever touching them.

The door opened suddenly.

A woman entered.

She was wearing a black suit and carrying a folder.

Jonathan immediately stood.

“Who are you?””

She looked at me.

“Someone who knows Michael Carter is telling the truth.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Who are you?””

“My name is Claire Bennett.””

The name meant nothing.

But the way Jonathan reacted did.

“Claire…”

She looked at him.

“I worked for your father.””

Jonathan stepped forward.

“You were part of his executive team.””

“Yes.””

“Why are you here?””

Claire opened the folder.

“Because I kept copies.””

She placed several documents on the table.

Old reports.

Emails.

Meeting records.

My hands shook as I recognized some of them.

“These are from the Vale Project.””

Claire nodded.

“Your father ordered the safety concerns removed.””

Jonathan looked at the papers.

“How did you get these?””

“I saved them because I knew one day someone would need them.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Why wait eight years?””

Claire looked at me.

“Because Michael disappeared.””

Her words hit me.

She wasn’t blaming me.

She was explaining.

“You left before anyone could help you.””

I looked away.

Because she was right.

I had been so focused on surviving that I forgot the truth needed someone to carry it.

Jonathan picked up one document.

Then another.

His expression became darker with every page.

“This could destroy the company.””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

“And you still brought it here?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Claire looked at Ethan.

“Because I watched an innocent child get blamed today for something he didn’t do.””

She looked back at Jonathan.

“And I realized nothing has changed.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Jonathan’s phone rang.

Again.

This time he answered on speaker.

A man’s voice came through.

Cold.

Controlled.

“You should stop digging.””

Everyone froze.

Jonathan looked at the phone.

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then:

“Someone who knows exactly what Michael Carter did.””

I stepped closer.

“Who are you?””

The voice answered.

And the name made my blood turn cold.

“Adrian Hayes.””

Jonathan looked confused.

“My father is dead.””

The voice laughed softly.

“No, Jonathan.””

A pause.

“He is not.””

The call ended.

Nobody moved.

May you like

Because everyone in that room understood the impossible.

Someone had just claimed that Robert Hayes was still alive.
