Chapter 7: The Person Behind Everything
The signature at the bottom of the letter changed everything.
My mother.
Claire looked at her.
“No.””
My mother’s face turned white.
“Claire…”
“You knew?””
The question was quiet.
Almost worse than shouting.
My mother sat down.
Tears filled her eyes.
“I found out years ago.””
Claire stared.
“How?””
My mother looked at the letter.
“Your grandmother told me.””
The room became silent.
I felt like I couldn’t breathe.
My mother.
The person who had always told me to forgive Claire.
The person who had watched Claire hurt me.
She knew.
Claire’s voice trembled.
“You knew my real mother was looking for me?””
My mother covered her face.
“Yes.””
“And you stayed quiet?””
“I was scared.””
Claire laughed.
“Everyone in this family is scared.””
She stood.
“But somehow, I’m always the one who pays for it.””
My mother cried.
“I thought I was protecting you.””
“No.””
Claire shook her head.
“You were protecting yourself.””
That sentence broke something.
Because nobody could argue.
My mother looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
I stared at her.
For years, I had wanted her to defend me.
To choose me.
But now I realized something painful.
She had never learned how to choose anyone.
She only learned how to avoid conflict.
My father stood between us.
“This ends today.””
He looked at my mother.
“No more secrets.””
Nobody disagreed.
Claire picked up the letter.
“Where is she?””
My father answered.
“Your biological mother?””
Claire nodded.
“She lives two hours away.””
My heart stopped.
Two hours.
All this time.
She had been nearby.
Claire looked at the necklace.
“What is her name?””
My father hesitated.
“Maria.””
Claire whispered it.
Like she was testing how it felt.
“Maria.””
The next day, Claire and my father drove to meet her.
I stayed home.
Not because I didn’t care.
Because I needed time.
My entire world had changed in a week.
A destroyed dress had uncovered twenty-six years of lies.
That afternoon, my phone rang.
It was Claire.
I answered immediately.
“How is she?””
There was silence.
Then Claire spoke.
“She looks like me.””
My chest tightened.
“What?””
“She has my eyes.””
Her voice broke.
“She knew my favorite song when I was little.””
I frowned.
“How?””
Claire cried softly.
“Because she wrote it for me.””
I sat down.
For the first time, I heard my sister sound like a child.
“She kept everything.””
“What do you mean?””
“Pictures. Letters. Baby clothes.””
A pause.
“She never gave up.””
I closed my eyes.
“Claire…”
“I was so angry at her.””
Her voice cracked.
“I thought she abandoned me.””
I didn’t know what to say.
Because sometimes the worst pain came from hating someone who never deserved it.
Later that evening, Claire came home.
She looked different.
Not magically healed.
Not suddenly perfect.
But different.
She sat beside me.
“I met her.””
I nodded.
“How was it?””
She smiled sadly.
“Hard.””
I understood.
“She cried when she saw me.””
“What did you say?””
Claire looked down.
“Nothing.””
“Nothing?””
“I didn’t know how to talk to someone who spent twenty-six years missing me.””
I reached for my cup.
“Maybe you don’t have to fix everything in one day.””
She looked at me.
“You really believe that?””
“Yes.””
A small smile appeared.
“Why are you being nice to me?””
I thought about it.
“Because I know what it feels like to want someone in your family to see your pain.””
Her eyes filled.
“I don’t deserve that.””
“No.””
I nodded.
“You don’t.””
She looked surprised.
“But you can become someone who does.””
For the first time, Claire didn’t argue.
Then my father walked into the room.
His expression was serious.
“Claire.””
She looked up.
“What happened?””
He held a folder.
“There’s something Maria told me.””
Claire immediately became tense.
“What?””
My father opened the folder.
“She wasn’t separated from you by accident.””
Claire’s face changed.
“What do you mean?””
He placed the papers on the table.
“The hospital mistake was real.””
He paused.
“But someone used it.””
My stomach tightened.
“Used it how?””
My father looked at Claire.
“Someone paid a hospital employee to change records.””
The room went silent.
Claire whispered:
“Who?””
My father turned the page.
And when he saw the name, his hands started shaking.
May you like
Because the person who planned everything wasn’t just someone from our family.
It was someone who had been watching Claire’s life from the beginning.
