Chapter 4: The Woman From the Past

Claire stood frozen with the phone against her ear.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The confident woman who always seemed untouchable suddenly looked like she had seen a ghost.

“Who is that?”” my mother asked.

Claire ignored her.

“No… you can’t call me.””

A pause.

Her face became pale.

“I thought you were dead.””

My father immediately looked at her.

Those words changed everything.

Dead.

The kitchen became silent.

Finally, Claire lowered the phone.

“What happened?”” my father asked.

She looked at him.

For once, she didn’t have an answer ready.

“I need to go.””

“Claire.””

“I said I need to go!””

She grabbed her keys.

But before she reached the door, my father stepped in front of her.

“Who called you?””

She stared at him.

Then she looked at me.

And something strange happened.

She looked afraid.

Not angry.

Afraid.

“Someone from before.””

“Before what?”” I asked.

She didn’t respond.

My father’s voice became firm.

“Claire.””

She looked down.

“It was Aunt Rachel.””

My mother dropped the cup she was holding.

It shattered on the floor.

“No.””

Claire looked at her.

“You know her?””

Nobody answered.

And that was when I realized something.

My entire family had been built on secrets.

My father slowly sat down.

“Rachel wasn’t supposed to contact us.””

“Who is Rachel?”” I asked.

My mother looked like she wanted to disappear.

“She was your father’s sister.””

I waited.

“Was?””

My father looked at me.

“She left the family twenty years ago.””

“Why?””

Nobody spoke.

Finally, my father said:

“Because of Claire.””

I felt a chill.

Claire looked away.

“I was little.””

“You were six,” my father said.

“What happened?”” I asked.

My father rubbed his face.

“Rachel discovered something.””

“What?””

He looked at Claire.

And Claire looked down.

“She found out your sister had been lying.””

My heart sank.

“About what?””

My father didn’t answer.

Because Claire did.

“She found out I wasn’t supposed to be here.””

The words made no sense.

“What?””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“I wasn’t supposed to be their daughter.””

The room went silent.

My mother whispered:

“Claire…”

But she continued.

“Rachel found out something about my birth.””

I looked at my father.

“What is she talking about?””

My father’s face was full of pain.

“There was a mistake at the hospital.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“A mistake?””

He nodded.

“Twenty-six years ago, there was a serious error.””

Claire laughed bitterly.

“Everyone spent years protecting me because they were afraid the truth would destroy me.””

My hands trembled.

“What truth?””

Claire looked at me.

And for the first time in my life, I saw my sister differently.

Not as a monster.

Not as a rival.

But as someone carrying a secret she never understood.

“The woman who raised me…”

She swallowed.

“She wasn’t my biological mother.””

My mother began crying.

My father closed his eyes.

“And Rachel was the only person who knew.””

I stared at all of them.

My entire life felt like it had shifted.

The dress.

The jealousy.

The anger.

Everything suddenly seemed connected to something much deeper.

Claire whispered:

“She called because she wants to meet me.””

My father stood.

“No.””

Claire looked at him.

“You can’t stop me.””

“I’m not trying to.””

He paused.

“But you need to know why she disappeared.””

Claire looked confused.

“What do you mean?””

My father walked toward the cabinet.

He pulled out an old box.

A box I had never seen before.

He opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Letters.

Documents.

He handed one photo to Claire.

Her face changed.

Because it showed a young woman holding a baby.

A baby who looked exactly like her.

On the back of the photograph was a date.

And a name.

Claire’s fingers shook.

“What is this?””

My father looked at her.

“The truth your grandmother wanted revealed only when you were ready.””

Claire turned the photograph over.

Then she read the writing behind it.

Her expression collapsed.

Because the name written there was not the name she had known her entire life.

It was a name that changed everything.

May you like

And underneath it were four words that made the entire room go silent:

*“Your real mother survived.””*
