Chapter 9: The Woman Buried in the Wrong Grave

Natalie read the note again.

Paul Mercer.

The man who had changed Michael's accident report.

The man who had allegedly received payments from a company connected to Margaret.

And now he wanted to meet her.

She called Daniel immediately.

“I have a note from Paul Mercer.””

“Don't go.””

“He says he knows what happened to Michael and Emily.””

“I said don't go, Natalie!””

His voice was louder than she had ever heard it.

Natalie closed her eyes.

“Daniel, we can't keep waiting for other people to decide when we deserve the truth.””

“It's dangerous.””

“So was working in your mother's house. So was saving Zoe. So was trusting the people who investigated Michael's death.””

Daniel fell silent.

Natalie continued.

“I won't go alone. We'll take the investigators.””

“Good. I'll meet you there.””

She looked at the note once more.

“Daniel?””

“Yes?””

“If Emily is alive, then Lily may still have a mother.””

Daniel swallowed.

“And Zoe may have a chance to know what really happened to hers.””

The old Hawthorne guesthouse stood behind the main estate, separated from the mansion by a long gravel driveway and a row of tall trees.

It had once been used by Daniel's grandparents.

Now it was mostly abandoned.

At 11:55, Natalie arrived with Daniel and two investigators.

Paul Mercer was waiting near the entrance.

He was in his early sixties, with thinning hair and a walking stick.

When he saw Daniel, he looked uncomfortable.

“I wasn't expecting you.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You changed my wife's medical records.””

Paul lowered his eyes.

“I changed the accident report.””

“Why?””

“Because I was paid to.””

Daniel's face hardened.

“By my mother?””

Paul nodded.

Natalie stepped closer.

“What happened to Michael?””

Paul looked at her.

“Your husband was investigating the wrong people.””

“He was investigating theft.””

“He was investigating more than theft.””

“What does that mean?””

Paul glanced at Daniel.

“Your wife was involved in something much bigger.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“Tell us what happened to Emily.””

Paul leaned heavily on his walking stick.

“Emily discovered that Margaret was moving money through shell companies. She also discovered that some of the companies were being used to arrange illegal identity transfers.””

Natalie frowned.

“Identity transfers?””

“Fake birth records. False adoption documents. Children being moved between guardians without proper legal authorization.””

Daniel felt sick.

“Why?””

“Money. Control. Sometimes inheritance disputes.””

Natalie looked at him.

“Was Lily involved?””

Paul nodded.

“Lily's birth was recorded under a different name. Margaret wanted the child hidden until she could secure control over the trust funds.””

Daniel clenched his fists.

“She was using a baby to steal money?””

“Not just one baby.””

Paul looked at Natalie.

“Michael found records showing that another child had been registered using false information.””

Natalie felt her stomach tighten.

“Who?””

Paul hesitated.

Then he looked at Daniel.

“Zoe.””

Daniel's face drained of color.

“What?””

Paul nodded.

“Your daughter's birth records were altered.””

Daniel shook his head.

“That is impossible. I was there when she was born.””

“You were present at the hospital. But the original records were later changed.””

Natalie stared at him.

“Why would anyone do that?””

Paul lowered his voice.

“Because Zoe's inheritance depended on her legal identity.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Are you saying Zoe isn't my biological daughter?””

Paul nodded slowly.

“That's what Margaret wanted you to believe.””

Daniel looked as though he had been struck.

“No.””

Paul continued.

“Michael discovered the original birth records. Emily knew the truth. They were both preparing to expose Margaret.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Stop.””

“I'm sorry.””

“Stop talking!””

Paul looked down.

Then he removed a small envelope from his coat.

“These are copies of the original records.””

Daniel took them.

His hands shook as he opened the envelope.

The first document contained Zoe's birth information.

The second was a hospital correction form.

The third was a genetic testing request.

Daniel looked at the final page.

His eyes moved across the names.

Then he stopped.

The biological father listed on the document was not Daniel Hawthorne.

It was Michael Collins.

Natalie felt the world collapse around her.

Daniel stared at her.

Then at the document.

“Michael was Zoe's biological father?””

Paul nodded.

“According to the original records.””

Natalie couldn't speak.

Michael had fathered Emily's child.

And he had apparently fathered Zoe as well.

Daniel stepped backward.

His entire marriage had become a mystery.

His daughter, the child he had raised and loved, might not be biologically his.

But the thought that hurt most was something else.

He had never known.

He had never been given the chance to understand.

Daniel sat on a wooden bench outside the guesthouse.

He held the documents in both hands.

Natalie approached slowly.

“Daniel?””

He didn't look up.

“Was my entire life a lie?””

Natalie sat beside him.

“I don't know.””

He laughed bitterly.

“I raised Zoe. I changed her diapers. I stayed awake when she had fevers. I held her when she cried for her mother.””

His voice broke.

“And now someone tells me I might not be her father.””

Natalie looked at him.

“Being her father isn't something a piece of paper can take away.””

Daniel covered his face.

For several moments, he cried silently.

Natalie placed a hand on his shoulder.

Then he looked at her.

“Michael was Zoe's biological father.””

She nodded.

“I know what the document says.””

“Did he know?””

“I don't know.””

Daniel looked toward the trees.

“Why would Emily do this?””

Natalie didn't answer.

She was thinking about Michael.

About the secret life he might have lived.

About the little girl who called him Daddy Michael.

And about the six-year-old who still needed someone to tell her that she was loved.

Inside the guesthouse, Paul was speaking with the investigators.

One of them placed a recorder on the table.

“We need you to provide a complete statement.””

Paul nodded.

“I will.””

The second investigator asked:

“Where is the original hospital file?””

Paul looked toward the hallway.

“Margaret has it.””

“Where?””

“In the family mausoleum.””

The investigators exchanged glances.

Paul continued.

“She kept copies of the altered records in a locked compartment behind Emily's memorial plaque.””

Daniel entered.

“You knew this all along?””

Paul looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

“Why didn't you tell the police?””

“Because Margaret threatened my family.””

Daniel's expression hardened.

“You helped her.””

“I did.””

“And now you want forgiveness?””

Paul shook his head.

“No. I want the truth recorded before it's too late.””

The investigator closed the notebook.

“We'll arrange access to the mausoleum.””

Paul looked at Daniel.

“There's something else.””

Daniel waited.

“Emily may still be alive.””

Daniel's face changed.

“You said that already.””

Paul shook his head.

“I don't mean that she survived. I mean she never died.””

Natalie felt her breath catch.

Paul opened his coat and removed an old photograph.

It showed a woman standing outside a small clinic.

She had shorter hair, wore glasses, and looked older than the woman in Daniel's wedding photographs.

But Natalie recognized her immediately.

Emily.

The woman Daniel had buried.

The woman Margaret had claimed was dead.

Standing alive.

Paul placed the photograph on the table.

“This was taken six months ago.””

Daniel stared at it.

“Where?””

“An assisted-living residence in Oregon.””

“Why would she be there?””

“Because Margaret arranged for her to disappear.””

Daniel's voice became barely audible.

“My wife is alive?””

Paul nodded.

“And she has been living under another name.””

The investigators obtained emergency authorization to examine the family mausoleum that evening.

Margaret had already been taken into custody.

She refused to cooperate.

But the authorities had enough information to search the property.

Behind Emily's memorial plaque, they discovered a narrow metal compartment.

Inside were original medical records, photographs, adoption papers, and a sealed envelope.

Daniel opened the envelope with trembling hands.

It contained a letter from Emily.

Daniel,

I am sorry.

If this letter has reached you, then Margaret has lost control of the story she created.

I was never dead.

I was forced to disappear after discovering what Margaret had done.

She told me that if I refused to cooperate, she would destroy Michael and take both children away.

I believed her.

I thought disappearing would protect everyone.

But Michael was already in danger.

I watched him fight for his life in the hospital. I heard him asking for me.

I wanted to reach him.

I wanted to tell him I was there.

But Margaret told me that if I moved, she would make sure Zoe and Lily disappeared too.

Daniel lowered the letter.

Natalie stood beside him.

The final lines were written in shaky handwriting.

I am alive.

I am sorry I let you bury an empty grave.

And Daniel, there is one more thing you must know.

Michael did not father Zoe.

Daniel looked up.

Natalie stared.

He read the final paragraph.

The original birth records were falsified. Zoe is your biological daughter. Michael discovered the truth and was preparing to prove that Margaret had switched the records to make it appear that he was the father.

Daniel gripped the letter.

The investigators exchanged looks.

Natalie covered her mouth.

The documents had been forged.

The signatures had been altered.

The entire scandal had been built around a lie.

But why?

Why would Margaret want Daniel to believe that Zoe was Michael's daughter?

Then Daniel found the final sentence.

The original DNA results are in the envelope marked BLUE.

He searched the compartment.

There was no blue envelope.

Only a small key attached to a metal tag.

On the tag were two words:

*HOSPITAL ARCHIVE.*

An hour later, Daniel and Natalie were driving toward St. Vincent Medical Center.

Jonathan was on the phone with the hospital's legal department.

The original DNA results had apparently been stored in a restricted archive.

The hospital agreed to release them under the investigators' authorization.

But when they arrived, the records administrator looked troubled.

“I found the file,” she explained.

“However, someone accessed it this afternoon.””

Daniel frowned.

“Who?””

She checked the digital record.

“Margaret Hawthorne.””

Natalie felt her stomach tighten.

“She's in custody.””

The administrator nodded.

“According to the system, the access occurred at 2:17 p.m. today.””

Daniel looked at Jonathan.

“Could someone have used her credentials?””

“Possibly.””

The administrator continued.

“The original DNA report is missing.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Of course it is.””

Then the administrator added:

“But there is a second record.””

“What second record?””

“A laboratory confirmation sent directly to the hospital's legal department. It was never placed in the ordinary patient file.””

She opened a secure cabinet.

After several minutes, she returned holding a sealed envelope.

Daniel took it.

His name was written across the front.

He opened it.

The first page showed the results of a DNA comparison.

The second showed a handwritten note from Emily.

Daniel read the note silently.

Then he looked at Natalie.

“What does it say?”” she asked.

Daniel's voice trembled.

“It says Zoe is my biological daughter.””

Natalie exhaled.

Daniel looked down again.

But there was another line.

One that changed everything.

The report also listed a second biological relationship.

Zoe and Lily were not half-sisters.

They were full biological sisters.

Daniel stared at the document.

“That means…”

Natalie finished the sentence.

“Michael was Lily's father, but Emily was her mother. Zoe is yours and Emily's.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

Then the hospital administrator spoke.

“Mr. Hawthorne, there is something else. The person who requested the second DNA test wasn't Emily.””

Daniel looked up.

“Who was it?””

The administrator checked the file.

“Your mother.””

That night, Daniel returned to the detention center where Margaret was being held.

She sat behind the glass partition, perfectly composed.

When she saw him, she smiled faintly.

“Darling. You've finally come to your senses.””

Daniel placed the DNA report against the glass.

“Why did you change Zoe's records?””

Margaret's smile disappeared.

“Where did you get that?””

“Why?””

She stared at him.

Then she whispered:

“Because Emily was going to leave you.””

Daniel shook his head.

“So you made me believe my daughter wasn't mine?””

“I was protecting your inheritance.””

“You were protecting your control!””

Margaret leaned toward the glass.

“You don't understand what would have happened if Emily had exposed everything.””

Daniel's voice cracked.

“You let me bury my wife while she was alive.””

Margaret looked away.

“You were weak. You would have believed her.””

“And Michael?””

Her expression hardened.

“He should have stayed out of it.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Did you order his brakes to be damaged?””

Margaret didn't answer.

Instead, she smiled sadly.

“You have no idea what Emily was planning.””

“What?””

Margaret leaned closer.

“Ask her why she disappeared.””

Daniel felt a chill move through him.

“What does that mean?””

His phone vibrated.

A message from Jonathan.

It contained a photograph of an address in Oregon.

And a short sentence.

*WE FOUND EMILY. BUT SHE'S NOT ALONE.*

Daniel looked up at his mother.

Margaret's smile widened.

“She's finally coming home, darling.””

May you like

Then she whispered:

“And she isn't coming back to save you.””
