Chapter 5: The Man Who Knew What Happened to Her Husband

Natalie didn't cry immediately.
She simply stared at the report.
The coffee shop was busy around her. Cups clattered against saucers. A barista called out someone's order. A couple near the window laughed over something on their phone.
But Natalie heard none of it.
All she could see was Michael's name.
“Brake system failure suspected.””
She remembered the last morning he had left their apartment.
Michael had kissed her forehead, picked up his lunch bag, and joked about how he would be home early enough to assemble the baby's crib.
She remembered calling him at lunchtime.
No answer.
She remembered the hospital's phone call.
And she remembered the words that had destroyed her world.
There has been an accident.
Natalie finally looked at Richard.
“Did someone tamper with his brakes?””
Richard lowered his eyes.
“I don't know.””
“Then why are you showing me this?””
“Because Margaret received the inspection report before the accident.””
Natalie's voice broke.
“How do you know?””
“I saw the email.””
“Show me.””
Richard opened his laptop.
He searched through an archived mailbox and found a message dated two days before Michael's death.
The sender was a maintenance supervisor.
The recipient was Margaret.
The subject line read:
Vehicle Safety Concern — Collins.
Natalie read the message.
The supervisor had reported unusual damage to the brake lines on Michael's assigned truck.
He had recommended that the vehicle be taken off the road immediately.
Margaret's reply was only one sentence.
Do not interfere with scheduled work. I will handle this personally.
Natalie pushed back her chair.
“No.””
Richard looked up.
“Natalie—”
“No! You're telling me someone knew his truck wasn't safe, and they let him drive it?””
“I believe so.””
Natalie began shaking.
“Why?””
“Michael had copied the financial records. Margaret was afraid he would expose the scheme.””
“Was she involved in his death?””
Richard hesitated.
“I can't prove that.””
Natalie stood.
“You expect me to believe this is all coincidence?””
“No.””
“Then tell me the truth!””
Richard closed his laptop.
“I believe Margaret arranged for Michael to be frightened into handing over the documents. But something happened before he could do that.””
Natalie's eyes filled.
“And you waited two years?””
Richard looked ashamed.
“Yes.””
She picked up the flash drive.
“You should have been protecting him.””
“I know.””
“You should have been protecting me!””
“I know.””
Natalie walked toward the door.
Richard called after her.
“One more thing. The documents on that drive contain a recording. Michael made it himself.””
She stopped.
“What's on it?””
Richard's voice dropped.
“Margaret threatening him.””
Daniel was in Jonathan's office when Natalie arrived.
She placed the flash drive on the desk.
“Richard gave me this.””
Daniel stood.
“Did you meet him?””
“Yes.””
“Did he tell you about Michael?””
Natalie nodded.
Then she handed Daniel the inspection report.
Daniel read it.
His expression became increasingly grim.
“Your husband's truck had a brake problem?””
“Someone reported it to my mother.””
Daniel looked up.
“Margaret?””
Natalie nodded.
“She received this report two days before Michael died.””
Daniel read the email again.
His jaw tightened.
“Did Richard say she knew?””
“Yes.””
Daniel turned to Jonathan.
“I want every document connected to that vehicle.””
Jonathan nodded.
“I'll contact the investigators.””
Natalie remained standing.
“There's a recording.””
Daniel connected the flash drive to his laptop.
A single audio file appeared.
The date was two days before Michael's accident.
He pressed play.
Michael's voice came through first.
“Mrs. Hawthorne, I'm not signing anything.””
Margaret answered.
“You don't understand the consequences of what you're doing.””
“I understand perfectly. You've been stealing money from a little girl's trust fund.””
“Watch your mouth.””
“I have copies of everything. The invoices, the transfers, the false maintenance records.””
A pause followed.
Then Margaret spoke.
“You're a temporary employee, Michael. Nobody will believe you over me.””
“They'll believe the records.””
“You have a wife. A baby on the way. Do you really want to risk everything?””
Michael's voice became colder.
“Don't threaten my family.””
Margaret laughed softly.
“Then stop involving yourself in things you don't understand.””
There was a scraping sound.
Then Michael said:
“If anything happens to me, the evidence goes to Daniel.””
The recording ended.
Daniel stared at the screen.
Natalie covered her mouth.
That was Michael.
His voice.
His words.
His determination.
For two years, she had wondered whether he had suffered during his final moments.
Now she knew he had been fighting to protect her and their unborn child.
Daniel turned toward her.
“I'm so sorry.””
Natalie looked at him.
“Your mother knew.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“And I brought you into that house without knowing what she had done.””
“You didn't know about Michael.””
“But I should have known what kind of person she was.””
Natalie looked at the laptop.
“Can you prove she caused his accident?””
“Not yet.””
“Then find out.””
Daniel nodded.
“I will.””
That afternoon, Jonathan contacted an independent forensic investigator named Elena Brooks.
Elena had previously worked on complex financial and insurance investigations.
She reviewed the recording, the email, and the vehicle inspection report.
Then she made a call.
Two hours later, she returned with preliminary information.
“The original accident report contains several inconsistencies,” she explained.
Daniel leaned forward.
“What inconsistencies?””
“The vehicle was initially described as having suffered catastrophic brake failure. However, the final report classified the incident as driver error.””
Natalie felt sick.
“Who changed it?””
Elena checked her notes.
“The final report was signed by an investigator named Paul Mercer.””
Jonathan frowned.
“Mercer left the department shortly afterward.””
“Correct,” Elena replied.
“He later became a consultant for a private company connected to Margaret Hawthorne.””
Daniel stood.
“Are you serious?””
Elena nodded.
“There's more. The company paid him approximately two hundred thousand dollars over eighteen months.””
Daniel looked at the documents.
“Can we prove it was a bribe?””
“Not from these records alone. But it's enough to justify a deeper investigation.””
Natalie sat silently.
She felt as though someone had reached into her past and rearranged every memory.
Michael's accident.
Margaret's presence in the photograph.
The missing money.
The strange phone call.
It was all connected.
Then Elena looked at Natalie.
“There's another issue.””
“What?””
“Your husband's accident report lists a second vehicle at the scene.””
Natalie frowned.
“What second vehicle?””
“A black SUV registered to Hawthorne Holdings.””
Daniel went pale.
“My company?””
Elena nodded.
“The vehicle was reported as being driven by a member of the company's senior management.””
Daniel stared at the page.
“Who?””
Elena turned it around.
The name was printed clearly.
Margaret Hawthorne.
Daniel drove back to the villa that evening.
He found Margaret entertaining two guests in the formal dining room.
She was laughing over a glass of wine when he entered.
“Daniel! You're home early.””
He didn't sit.
“Where were you on October fourteenth, two years ago?””
Margaret's smile faded.
“What?””
“The day Michael Collins died.””
She placed her glass down.
“I don't remember.””
“Your company vehicle was at the accident scene.””
Margaret blinked.
“That is absurd.””
“Were you driving it?””
“No.””
“Then explain why the report lists you as the driver.””
Margaret glanced at the two guests.
“Could we discuss this privately?””
Daniel looked at them.
“Please leave.””
The guests exchanged uncomfortable looks and hurried out.
Once they were alone, Margaret stood.
“You're embarrassing yourself.””
Daniel placed the printed report on the table.
“Were you there?””
Margaret looked at the paper.
Then she laughed.
“Someone is feeding you lies.””
“Was Michael blackmailing you?””
“He was a dishonest little man.””
Daniel's eyes hardened.
“He was trying to protect Zoe's money.””
“He was trying to ruin us!””
The words came out before Margaret could stop them.
Daniel froze.
“What did you just say?””
Margaret's face changed.
“I meant—”
“You knew he had the evidence.””
“Daniel, you don't understand.””
“Then explain it!””
Margaret moved toward the window.
“Your father built this family. He trusted me to protect everything he left behind. I did what I had to do.””
“Did you arrange Michael's accident?””
Margaret spun around.
“Don't you dare accuse me of murder!””
“Then why was your vehicle at the scene?””
“I went there because Michael had stolen confidential documents!””
Daniel stared at her.
“You were at the accident?””
Margaret realized her mistake.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Daniel quietly asked:
“What happened when you arrived?””
Margaret's eyes filled with fury.
“I told you. He stole from us.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Mom, did you see him after the crash?””
She looked away.
And that was answer enough.
Later that night, Natalie received a message from an unknown number.
It contained a photograph of a hospital corridor.
She recognized the location immediately.
It was the hospital where Michael had died.
Beneath the photograph was a message.
Ask the nurse who changed his medical records. She still works there.
Natalie stared at the screen.
Before she could respond, another message arrived.
And ask why Margaret visited your husband before he was pronounced dead.
Natalie's hands began to shake.
Michael had been transported to the hospital after the accident.
She had arrived too late.
That was what she had been told.
But if Margaret had been there before his death…
Then perhaps Michael hadn't died at the scene.
Perhaps he had been alive.
Perhaps he had been able to speak.
And perhaps someone had made sure his final words were never heard.
Natalie called Daniel immediately.
He answered on the first ring.
“Natalie?””
“I need you to come to the hospital.””
“What's happened?””
She looked at the photograph again.
“Someone says your mother visited Michael while he was still alive.””
Daniel went silent.
Then he asked:
“Who sent you that?””
Natalie swallowed.
“I don't know.””
A third message appeared.
This one contained a name.
*NURSE ELIZABETH CARTER.*

And beneath it:
She knows what Michael told Margaret before he died.
