Chapter 7: The Child at the Empty House

The address led to a vacant property on the outskirts of town.

Daniel recognized it immediately.

It belonged to his mother's estate, a small white cottage that had been rented out for years before the tenants moved away. The windows were boarded on one side, and the garden had grown wild.

Mia had no reason to be there.

Neither did Victor.

Yet Daniel stood in the rain outside the gate, gripping his phone while Thomas waited beside him.

“Don't go in without calling the police,” Thomas said.

Daniel stared at the dark windows.

“She says she has the original envelope.””

“We already have the envelope.””

“Then why does she want us here?””

Thomas didn't answer.

Daniel looked down at the photograph of the baby. It showed a small child sleeping beneath a white blanket, one tiny hand curled near the cheek.

He had spent the last six months believing his wife had suffered a miscarriage. Now he knew that somewhere in the world, a child existed who was biologically related to Victor, connected to his family, and possibly caught in the middle of a financial scheme.

“I'm calling the police,” Daniel said.

He dialed the emergency number and explained that his wife had sent a message directing him to an empty property while withholding documents related to suspected fraud. He also mentioned the photograph of the baby and his concern that someone might be in danger.

The dispatcher told him to stay outside until officers arrived.

Then the cottage lights came on.

A silhouette moved behind the curtains.

Thomas caught Daniel's arm.

“Wait.””

The front door opened.

Mia stepped onto the porch, wearing a dark coat and holding a thick envelope.

She looked exhausted. Her hair was tangled, her face pale, and her eyes swollen from crying.

“Daniel,” she called.

“Please. Just come inside.””

He remained at the gate.

“Is the baby here?””

Mia's face crumpled.

“No.””

“Then why send me that photograph?””

“Because I needed you to listen.””

“You could have called.””

“You wouldn't have answered.””

Daniel held up his phone.

“You sent me a photograph of a child and told me to come alone. Do you understand how that looks?””

Mia glanced at Thomas.

“I wanted to talk to my husband.””

Thomas stepped forward.

“You lost the right to use that word as a weapon.””

Mia flinched.

“Please don't do this.””

Daniel looked at the envelope in her hand.

“What is it?””

“The original claim.””

“We have the beneficiary instructions.””

“This is different. It's the document Victor used to change the policy.””

Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

“Give it to me.””

Mia shook her head.

“Not until you hear everything.””

“Then talk.””

She took a breath.

“Victor told me that if I helped him obtain the money, he would pay off my debts and give me enough to start over. He said we could take the baby and leave the country.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“You planned to disappear with another man's child?””

“I thought it was the only way.””

“No. You thought it was the easiest way.””

Mia looked down.

“I was afraid you'd hate me.””

Daniel let out a bitter laugh.

“You decided I would hate you, so you made sure I had every reason to.””

She wiped her cheeks.

“I know.””

For the first time, she didn't try to defend herself.

She stepped down from the porch and held out the envelope.

“Here. Take it.””

Daniel didn't move.

“What's inside?””

“An application to redirect the insurance payment. Victor needed my signature because I was listed as an authorized representative on one of Thomas's accounts. I signed it.””

“Was the signature forged?””

“Yes.””

“Did you know?””

She nodded.

“And the power of attorney in my name?””

“I prepared it.””

Daniel felt a sharp pain behind his ribs.

“You forged my signature while I was in the hospital?””

“I thought if the claim went through, I could repay the lender and leave before you found out.””

“Why would you think money would erase what you'd done?””

Mia looked at him helplessly.

“Because I was desperate.””

Thomas's voice was quiet.

“Desperation explains a choice. It doesn't excuse it.””

Mia stared at the ground.

“I know.””

A car turned onto the road.

Blue lights flashed through the rain.

Daniel looked toward the gate.

Two police officers approached, one speaking into a radio. He explained the situation, showed them Mia's messages, and handed over the documents.

Mia didn't resist when one officer asked her to step away from the cottage.

But as she passed Daniel, she whispered something that made him turn.

“Victor wasn't the only one who wanted the baby gone.””

Daniel caught her arm.

“What did you say?””

The officer immediately intervened.

“Sir, let her go.””

Daniel released her.

Mia looked directly at him.

“Ask your father what happened the night the baby was born.””

Thomas went rigid.

The officers led Mia toward their car.

Daniel turned to his father.

“What happened?””

Thomas's face had gone gray.

“Not here.””

“I'm done hearing that.””

Thomas looked toward the cottage.

“Then you should know that I went to the hospital that night because Mia called me. She was terrified. She said Victor had threatened to take the baby away from her.””

“And what did you do?””

“I helped her contact a social worker.””

“Why?””

“Because she said she couldn't care for the child safely while she was dealing with Victor's threats and her financial problems.””

Daniel stared at him.

“You helped arrange the adoption?””

“I helped her understand her options. I never signed anything on her behalf.””

“Then why was your name listed as an emergency contact?””

“Because she trusted me more than anyone else in the family.””

Daniel looked toward the police car.

Mia sat in the back seat, her face turned toward the window.

He felt no sympathy for the lies she had told, but he could not ignore the possibility that the woman who had framed his father had also been frightened of something real.

“What did Victor threaten to do?”” Daniel asked.

Thomas rubbed his forehead.

“He said he'd take the baby and use the child to gain access to the trust. He claimed the money belonged to Lauren's bloodline and that a direct descendant could challenge the beneficiary instructions.””

“Could he?””

“Only under specific circumstances. But he was willing to exploit every uncertainty.””

Daniel looked again at the photograph.

“Where is the child now?””

Thomas shook his head.

“I don't know. The adoption agency would have that information, but they won't disclose it without proper authorization.””

Daniel's phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

*You want the truth about your grandson? Stop asking Thomas. Ask the woman who adopted him.*

Below it was a name.

*Rebecca Hale.*

Daniel stared at the screen.

Martin Hale's daughter.

The lawyer who had inherited the files.

He called the number attached to the message.

A woman answered after two rings.

“Hello?””

“Rebecca Hale?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Daniel Whitmore. I believe you have documents related to my mother's estate.””

Silence.

Then she said, “I've been waiting for you to call.””

Daniel looked at Thomas.

“What do you know about the baby?””

Rebecca's voice softened.

“More than I should. But before I tell you anything, I need you to understand that the adoption was legal, the child is safe, and the adoptive parents have no involvement in your family's financial dispute.””

“Who are they?””

“I can't tell you over the phone.””

“Why not?””

“Because your wife has already tried to contact them.””

Daniel's blood ran cold.

“What did she do?””

“She sent them a letter claiming that the child had been conceived through an affair and that the biological father was dangerous. She also suggested that the adoption should be reversed.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Did they believe her?””

“No. But they are frightened. They've asked the agency to restrict contact until everything is clarified.””

Daniel pressed his free hand against the gate.

“Rebecca, please. I need to know if the baby is really Victor's.””

There was a pause.

“According to the medical records, yes.””

“Then why would Mia try to reverse the adoption?””

“Because she believes the child may be entitled to part of the trust.””

Thomas looked away.

Daniel felt the pieces moving into place.

Mia had tried to obtain the insurance money. Victor had used her to pursue the claim. The baby, as Lauren's direct descendant, might have a legitimate legal interest in the estate.

But Mia's attempt to reclaim the child suggested something else.

She wasn't simply trying to escape her debts.

She wanted control over the person who might eventually inherit the money.

“Rebecca,” Daniel said, “what did my mother leave in that trust?””

“The documents are complicated. Your mother wanted you to inherit the majority of the estate, but she also created a separate provision for any child born to Lauren.””

Daniel looked at Thomas.

His father had never mentioned that.

Rebecca continued.

“If Victor's paternity is established, his child may be entitled to a share. Not automatically, and not without legal review, but the provision exists.””

“How much?””

“Enough to explain why everyone is fighting.””

Daniel's throat tightened.

“Can you send me the original documents?””

“I can arrange a meeting tomorrow morning.””

“Thank you.””

But before she ended the call, Rebecca added one more thing.

“Daniel, there's something else. Your mother didn't trust Thomas to manage the trust alone.””

Daniel turned slowly toward his father.

“What?””

“She appointed a second trustee. Someone who was supposed to protect the child's interests if Thomas ever became unable to act.””

“Who?””

Rebecca hesitated.

“Your mother appointed you.””

Daniel stared at the phone.

“That makes no sense. I was sixteen when she died.””

“The appointment was designed to take effect when you reached adulthood. Your father was supposed to inform you when you turned twenty-one.””

Daniel looked at Thomas.

“Why didn't you?””

His father lowered his head.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

Thomas's voice broke.

“From the fact that your mother believed I might make the wrong decision.””

Daniel felt the world tilt.

His father had hidden the trust, the beneficiary instructions, and the existence of the child. He had allowed Daniel to believe he was simply a son helping an aging parent.

And now Daniel wondered whether every decision his father had made had been an attempt to protect the family—or to protect himself.

The police car pulled away with Mia inside.

As the taillights disappeared into the rain, Daniel's phone rang again.

This time, the caller ID displayed a name he recognized from the old photograph.

*Rebecca Hale.*

He answered.

“Daniel,” she said, her voice trembling.

“I've just opened the sealed file your mother left behind. You need to come to my office immediately.””

“Why?””

“Because the original beneficiary document contains a clause your father never told you about.””

Daniel looked at Thomas.

“What clause?””

Rebecca took a breath.

“If Thomas Whitmore is found to have concealed material information about the trust, he can be removed as trustee.””

Daniel stared at his father.

Then Rebecca delivered the final blow.

“And Daniel, the document names the person who takes his place.””
