Chapter 4: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

For several seconds, Daniel couldn't hear anything except the rain.

His wife stood three feet away from him, her handbag clutched against her chest. The kitchen light reflected in her eyes, making them look almost black.

“Tell me he's wrong,” Daniel said.

Mia didn't answer.

“Tell me you didn't submit that claim.””

She lowered her handbag onto a chair.

“I can explain.””

“You've said that three times today.””

“Because you won't listen!””

Daniel slapped his phone onto the table.

“The insurance company says you filed a claim using a power of attorney with a dead woman's signature. How am I supposed to listen to that?””

Mia's jaw tightened.

“I didn't steal anything.””

“Then why did you file it?””

“Because the money belongs to the family.””

“It's not yours!””

“Neither is your father's entire life!”” she shouted.

“He controls everything. He decides what gets paid, where we live, what we can afford. You work yourself sick trying to keep him comfortable, and he still treats me like an outsider.””

Thomas appeared in the doorway.

“I have never stopped you from buying anything you needed.””

Mia turned on him.

“You made me ask permission for every renovation. You questioned every bill. You treated me like a child living under your roof.””

“This is my house,” Thomas said quietly.

“I invited you into it.””

“And you've never let me forget it!””

Daniel raised his voice.

“Stop changing the subject. Did you submit the claim?””

Mia looked at him.

“Yes.””

The single word seemed to suck all the air from the room.

Daniel took a step back.

“Why?””

She pressed both hands against her forehead.

“Because I thought I could fix everything.””

“Fix what?””

For the first time, Mia looked genuinely ashamed.

“I borrowed money.””

Thomas stared at her.

“How much?””

She didn't answer.

“Mia,” Daniel said, “how much?””

“Three hundred thousand dollars.””

Thomas gripped the doorframe.

Daniel felt his stomach turn.

“From whom?””

“A private lender.””

“For what?””

“Investments.””

“What investments?””

Mia's eyes filled with tears.

“Daniel, I was trying to make more money for us. I thought I could pay it back before anyone noticed.””

“You borrowed three hundred thousand dollars without telling me?””

“I didn't have a choice!””

“You always have a choice!””

She shook her head violently.

“You don't understand. The payments kept growing. The lender threatened to contact your employer. He threatened to tell everyone I was a fraud.””

“Are you?””

Mia looked away.

Daniel felt something inside him break.

He remembered the expensive handbag she had bought in the spring. The sudden weekend trip to Miami. The jewelry she had insisted was a gift from a friend. He had questioned some of the purchases, and she had laughed, telling him he was becoming as controlling as his father.

He had apologized.

Now every memory looked like a warning he had chosen to ignore.

Thomas stepped into the room.

“Who is the lender?””

Mia pressed her lips together.

“His name is Victor.””

“Victor what?””

“Victor Shaw.””

Thomas went completely still.

Daniel noticed.

“Dad?””

Thomas's hand tightened around the doorframe.

“Victor Shaw was involved in the dispute over your mother's policy.””

Mia looked at him sharply.

“What?””

Thomas turned toward Daniel.

“Years ago, Victor worked with an investment group that handled some of your mother's accounts. After she died, he contacted Lauren. He claimed there was a way to challenge the beneficiary instructions and gain control of the funds.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because the case was dismissed. I thought it was over.””

Mia shook her head.

“It wasn't.””

Thomas looked at her.

“You knew him?””

She said nothing.

Daniel felt the floor shift beneath him.

“You knew Victor before you borrowed the money?””

Mia closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

“How?””

She sank into the nearest chair.

“He approached me last year. He said he had information about your mother's estate. He said your father had hidden money that belonged to the family.””

Thomas let out a humorless laugh.

“That's what he told Lauren, too.””

Mia looked up.

“He said there was a document proving your mother had changed the beneficiary before she died. He said if I could get access to Thomas's records, he could recover the money.””

“And you believed him?””

“I wanted to believe him.””

Daniel stared at her.

“So you went through my father's papers, forged documents, and filed a fraudulent claim because a stranger promised you two million dollars?””

“He wasn't a stranger!””

The words escaped before Mia could stop them.

Silence fell.

Daniel slowly approached her.

“What do you mean?””

Mia looked at Thomas.

The old man's face had become unreadable.

“Tell him,” she whispered.

Thomas shook his head.

“No.””

“Tell him who Victor really is.””

“Not like this.””

Daniel stepped between them.

“Tell me what?””

Mia stood so abruptly that the chair scraped across the floor.

“Victor Shaw is Lauren's son.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Lauren never had children.””

“That is what everyone was told.””

Thomas closed his eyes.

Daniel turned toward his father.

“Is it true?””

Thomas didn't answer.

“Dad!””

“Yes,” Thomas finally said.

“It's true.””

Daniel felt dizzy.

“How?””

“Lauren had a child when she was young. Your mother helped her arrange an adoption. The family agreed to keep it private because Lauren was in a difficult situation, and the boy was raised by another family.””

“Did you know Victor was the child?””

Thomas nodded.

“I discovered it after your mother's death.””

“Then why did you never tell me?””

“Because Victor came to me with accusations. He claimed your mother had promised him a share of the policy. I showed him the estate documents.

He threatened to sue. When the case failed, he disappeared.””

Mia folded her arms across her chest.

“He came back because he wanted what he believed was his.””

“Then why involve you?”” Daniel asked.

“Because he needed someone inside the family. Someone who could access the records.””

Daniel looked at his wife.

“And you agreed.””

“I was drowning in debt!””

“So you decided to drown my father instead?””

Mia flinched.

For a moment, she looked like the woman Daniel had married: vulnerable, exhausted, desperate to be forgiven.

Then she straightened.

“You have no idea what it's like to be married to someone whose family will never accept you.””

Thomas's face hardened.

“I welcomed you into my home.””

“You welcomed me because Daniel asked you to!””

“And I would do it again,” Thomas replied.

“If I believed you loved my son.””

Mia's expression twisted.

“You don't get to judge me.””

“No,” Thomas said.

“The camera will.””

Her eyes snapped toward the ceiling.

Daniel followed her gaze.

The red light continued blinking.

“There's something else,” Thomas said.

“Something she hasn't told you.””

Mia took a step backward.

“Don't.””

Thomas reached into his pocket and pulled out a folded receipt.

“I found this in the garage beside the package she asked me to mail. It was from a private clinic.””

Daniel took the paper.

The receipt was dated six months earlier. It listed a consultation, a laboratory fee, and a payment made in cash.

At the bottom was a handwritten name.

*Dr. Elaine Porter.*

Daniel looked at Mia.

“What is this?””

She began shaking her head.

“It's nothing.””

“Then why are you afraid of it?””

“Because you won't understand!””

“Try me.””

Mia covered her face.

Thomas's voice softened.

“Daniel, I think there's more to this than money.””

Daniel stared at the receipt.

He remembered the spring, when Mia had suddenly become secretive about her appointments. She had told him she was dealing with a personal health issue and didn't want to discuss it until she felt ready.

He had respected her privacy.

He had assumed it was something minor.

Now he wondered whether every silence in their marriage had concealed another lie.

“Who is Dr. Porter?”” he asked.

Mia lowered her hands.

“A doctor I saw.””

“For what?””

She looked at him, tears streaming down her cheeks.

“I was pregnant.””

Daniel stopped breathing.

The rain seemed to grow louder.

“When?”” he whispered.

“Six months ago.””

He stared at her.

“You told me you weren't pregnant.””

“I know.””

“You told me the test was negative.””

“I know!””

Daniel gripped the counter.

“What happened to the baby?””

Mia's mouth trembled.

“I lost it.””

For a moment, anger disappeared beneath a deeper, more painful confusion.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I didn't want you to know.””

The words came out quietly.

Daniel felt as though the room had dropped away beneath him.

“You didn't want me to know my own child existed?””

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

She looked at Thomas.

Then she whispered, “Because the baby wasn't yours.””

Daniel didn't move.

Thomas's eyes widened.

Mia began sobbing.

“I was going to tell you. I swear I was. But everything happened so quickly, and then Victor came back, and I was already in debt, and I thought if I could get the money, I could leave before anyone found out.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Who was the father?””

Mia shook her head.

“Please don't make me say it.””

“Who?””

She pressed her hands against her mouth.

Then a voice came from the hallway.

“Because she doesn't know which one of us you're going to believe.””

Daniel spun around.

A man stood just inside the open front door, dressed in a charcoal coat and holding a black leather briefcase.

Thomas went rigid.

Mia stumbled backward.

The stranger looked at Daniel with a faint, weary smile.

“I'm Victor Shaw,” he said.

“And before you call the police, you should know that your wife wasn't the only person working on that insurance claim.””

He placed the briefcase on the table and opened it.

Inside lay a stack of photographs.

The first showed Mia entering a hotel.

The second showed her leaving with Victor.

The third showed them standing together outside a private clinic six months earlier.

Daniel stared at the final photograph.

It showed Victor holding a newborn baby.

On the back, someone had written a date.

Six months earlier.

And beneath it, five words that made Thomas sink into the nearest chair.

*The child survived. Ask Thomas.*
