Chapter 8: The Reason My Grandmother Warned Me
My grandmother’s handwriting was unmistakable.
Elegant.
Careful.
Every letter perfectly shaped.
I had spent years reading her birthday cards.
Her recipes.
Her notes left around the house.
But this was different.
This wasn’t a grandmother writing to her granddaughter.
This was a woman leaving a warning.
The document was dated fifteen years ago.
Before I met Daniel.
Before I knew his name.
*Delia, if you are reading this, then I was right to be cautious.*
My heart tightened.
I kept reading.
*Money does not change people. It reveals them.*
I sat at my kitchen table until sunrise.
Because every answer I had been looking for was there.
My grandmother had met Daniel before I did.
Not socially.
Professionally.
He had approached her about investing in a medical project.
She refused.
Not because the idea was bad.
Because she researched him.
And what she found frightened her.
Previous financial problems.
Unexplained debts.
A pattern of charming people who trusted him.
My grandmother didn’t tell me because she knew I was young.
She knew I was in love.
She knew telling me would make me defend him.
And she was right.
I would have.
The woman who raised me knew me better than I knew myself.
Then I reached the final page.
*I hope I am wrong about him. I truly do. But if I am not, protect yourself. Never allow him access to what belongs to you.*
My eyes burned.
Because she had seen it.
Before anyone else.
Before me.
Before Elena.
Before Claire.
Before everyone.
I called Emma.
She answered immediately.
“Did you find something?””
“Yes.””
I told her.
She was silent.
Then:
“He planned everything.””
“I think so.””
“No.””
Her voice was stronger.
“He planned people.””
That sentence stayed with me.
Because she was right.
Daniel didn’t just lie.
He placed people where they benefited him.
A wife who handled his life.
A daughter he could hide.
A lover he could impress.
A family who protected his image.
Everyone had a role.
Except Daniel.
He was always the one in control.
Until now.
My phone rang.
Daniel.
I stared at the screen.
Then answered.
“Hello.””
“Delia.””
His voice was different.
Not angry.
Not confident.
Afraid.
“You saw the statement.””
“Yes.””
“I didn’t mean it like that.””
I almost smiled.
“You never do.””
“Please listen.””
“No.””
“Delia.””
“You don’t get to ask me for patience anymore.””
Silence.
Then:
“I need your help.””
There it was.
The reason he called.
Not apology.
Not accountability.
Help.
“What happened?””
“The hospital suspended me.””
I said nothing.
“They’re investigating.””
“Because of what you did.””
“I made mistakes.””
“No.””
My voice sharpened.
“You made choices.””
He breathed out.
“Please.””
I looked at the documents.
At my grandmother’s warning.
At Elena’s letter.
At Emma’s pain.
“How many people did you say that to?””
“What?””
“When you needed forgiveness.””
He was quiet.
And that answer was enough.
I ended the call.
For the first time in my life, I blocked Daniel’s number.
It felt strange.
Like closing a door I had spent years holding open.
Two days later, Marcus called.
“Delia.””
“Yes?””
“We found Elena.””
I stood immediately.
“What?””
“She’s alive.””
Everything stopped.
“Where?””
“She’s been living under another name.””
“Why?””
Marcus hesitated.
“Because she was afraid Daniel would find her.””
My hands went cold.
“Can I talk to her?””
“Yes.””
The meeting happened in a small town three hours away.
Elena was not what I expected.
She wasn’t angry.
She wasn’t dramatic.
She was tired.
The kind of tired that comes from surviving something nobody believes happened.
When she saw me, she whispered:
“You’re the woman after me.””
I didn’t know what to say.
“Yes.””
She smiled sadly.
“I wondered what you would look like.””
I sat across from her.
“Why?””
“Because Daniel always described you.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did he say?””
“That you were perfect.””
I looked confused.
“He said that?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Elena looked out the window.
“Because he needed me to believe he finally found someone who would never leave him.””
The words hurt.
Because they revealed something I hadn’t understood.
Daniel didn’t love people.
He loved what they provided.
“You tried to expose him.””
“Yes.””
“And he stopped you.””
She nodded.
“He convinced everyone I was unstable.””
I looked down.
“The same thing he’s doing to me.””
Elena’s eyes filled.
“I’m sorry.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t have to be.””
“Yes, I do.””
She reached across the table.
“Because I should have warned you.””
I froze.
“What?””
She swallowed.
“Before I disappeared, I left evidence.””
“What evidence?””
Her expression changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
“The one thing Daniel never found.””
I leaned forward.
“What?””
She whispered:
“The recording.””
My heart started pounding.
“What recording?””
Elena looked directly at me.
“The one where Daniel admits everything.””
Then she added:
“And if he knows I’m alive…”
May you like
She stopped.
“Then he’ll come for it.””
