Chapter 3: The File Nobody Was Supposed to Open

Daniel didn’t come running.

That would have been easier.

A guilty man runs.

A desperate man begs.

Daniel did something much worse.

He calculated.

I saw it happen from across the airport.

His expression changed.

The panic disappeared.

The surgeon returned.

Cold.

Controlled.

Professional.

He stepped away from his family and walked toward a quiet corner.

Then he called me again.

“Delia.””

“Yes?””

“Come downstairs.””

I almost laughed.

“Why?””

“We need to talk.””

“No.””

His jaw tightened.

“I think you owe me an explanation.””

That sentence told me everything.

Not I’m sorry.

Not I hurt you.

Not I betrayed you.

You owe me.

Even now.

After everything.

“You’re right,” I said.

He paused.

“I do owe you something.””

His voice softened.

“I knew you’d understand.””

“No, Daniel.””

I looked at him through the glass.

“I owe you the truth.””

He waited.

“I know about Claire.””

The silence was immediate.

Claire.

The blonde woman.

His secret.

His second life.

“Who told you that name?””

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

Not denial.

Confirmation.

“You didn’t even ask who Claire was.””

Daniel said nothing.

Behind him, his mother and Rachel were whispering.

The children were sitting on their suitcases.

Waiting.

Like this was just another delay.

Like their family had not been built on a lie.

“How long?”” I asked.

“Delia—”

“How long?””

He lowered his voice.

“It’s complicated.””

“No.””

I stood.

“Complicated is forgetting an anniversary. Complicated is a misunderstanding.””

I watched him.

“This is a second life.””

He rubbed his forehead.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

He didn’t answer.

“When you came back from Paris?””

His eyes moved.

Just slightly.

Enough.

I laughed.

“You weren’t planning to tell me.””

“Things weren’t what they looked like.””

I looked down at my wedding ring.

Funny.

That was always the sentence people used when they had been caught.

“It looked like you kissed another woman.””

“She’s not just another woman.””

The words escaped before he could stop them.

I felt something break.

Not loudly.

Quietly.

“She’s not just another woman?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Delia…”

“No. Say it.””

He looked away.

“She’s someone important.””

I nodded slowly.

“And I’m what?””

His silence answered.

My phone buzzed.

Marcus.

*Second upload complete. Third set ready.*

I looked at the message.

Daniel noticed.

“What are those files?””

I smiled.

“You’re about to find out.””

His face hardened.

“You think this is revenge?””

“No.””

“Then what is it?””

I looked at him.

“The truth.””

The third file uploaded.

The one containing the documents he never knew existed.

Years ago, when Daniel’s medical practice began growing, he wanted investors.

I suggested creating protections.

He laughed.

“You worry too much.””

I did.

Because someone had to.

The building he practiced in?

Mine.

The accounts that funded expansions?

Protected.

The shares he bragged about owning?

Never actually belonged to him.

He had spent years telling people he was self-made.

The truth was more painful.

He was built on a foundation he never bothered to look at.

A foundation I maintained.

A foundation he betrayed.

My phone rang.

This time, it was Claire.

I answered.

Daniel’s face changed.

“Don’t.””

I ignored him.

“Hello?””

Her voice was shaking.

“Delia?””

“Yes.””

A long pause.

“I think we need to talk.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Do we?””

“I didn’t know.””

Those four words surprised me.

“I didn’t know about you.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Claire, don’t do this.””

She ignored him.

“I swear.””

Her voice cracked.

“He told me he was divorced.””

For a moment, nobody moved.

The airport noise faded.

The announcements.

The footsteps.

The luggage wheels.

Everything.

Daniel looked at the phone.

Then at me.

“Delia…”

I didn’t feel victory.

I felt tired.

Because suddenly I understood something.

Claire wasn’t the enemy.

She was another person Daniel had lied to.

And that made him even worse.

Because he hadn’t chosen her over me.

He had chosen a version of himself where nobody could see the truth.

Marcus called again.

I answered.

“Delia.””

His voice sounded serious.

“The final document just opened.””

“What is it?””

A pause.

Then:

“The one that proves Daniel knew exactly what he was doing.””

I looked at my husband.

And Daniel looked terrified.

Because whatever was inside that final file…

May you like

It wasn’t about money.

It was about the reason he destroyed everything.
