Chapter 9: The Man Behind My Husband's Lies

Dr. Adrian Cole walked into the boardroom as if he owned it.
He wore a dark green suit, a white shirt, and a silver watch that caught the light when he extended his hand toward Robert Sinclair.
"Good morning, everyone.""
Nobody returned his greeting.
One of the investigators stepped forward.
"Dr. Cole, we'd like to ask you some questions regarding financial documents and medical records connected to Hartwell Holdings.""
Cole smiled.
"Of course. But I believe you've misunderstood the situation.""
Marcus stood.
"Adrian, tell them.""
Cole looked at him.
"Sit down, Marcus.""
The room went quiet.
It was the first time I'd heard anyone speak to my husband that way.
Marcus stared.
"What?""
"I said sit down.""
For once, Marcus obeyed.
Cole turned toward Daniel.
"Mr. Whitmore. I assume you've discovered the old hospital records.""
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"Yes.""
"Then you know the situation was complicated.""
"Complicated enough to steal a child from one family and give her to another?""
Cole sighed.
"That is an emotional interpretation.""
I stepped forward.
"Don't call it an interpretation. I want to know what happened.""
He looked at me.
"Your father believed he was protecting you.""
"From what?""
"From the consequences of a hospital error.""
"Which you helped conceal.""
Cole glanced toward the investigators.
"I'd prefer to speak with legal representation present.""
Daniel nodded.
"That would be wise.""
But before anyone could move, Vanessa stood.
"I have something else.""
Marcus closed his eyes.
"Vanessa, please.""
She ignored him.
She removed a second storage device from her handbag.
"This contains the original audio file, not the edited version I gave Daniel.""
Cole's expression changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
One investigator approached.
"May we have that?""
Vanessa handed it over.
Marcus looked at her.
"Where did you get the original?""
"From your office.""
"You stole it?""
"No. You gave me the access code.""
"I never—"
"You wrote it on the back of my birthday card.""
The investigator connected the device to a laptop.
A new recording began.
This time, the voices were different.
My father's.
And Dr. Cole's.
I recognized my father's voice immediately.
It was weaker than I remembered, but unmistakable.
"Adrian, I want the original records restored.""
Cole answered.
"That isn't possible anymore.""
"Why?""
"Because the documents were changed years ago.""
"Then change them back.""
A pause.
Then my father spoke again.
"My daughter deserves to know who she is.""
Cole laughed softly.
"Which daughter?""
I felt my knees weaken.
My father continued.
"Don't play games with me.""
"You raised Evelyn. She's your daughter.""
"She is my daughter. But she is also Daniel's sister.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
The recording continued.
Cole said, "And if you tell him, you'll destroy both families.""
My father answered quietly.
"Those families were destroyed the day you switched the records.""
There was a long silence.
Then Cole said something that made the entire room freeze.
"You wanted the baby. Your wife was dead, and you believed the child was hers. I gave you what you wanted.""
My father sounded furious.
"You gave me someone else's child.""
"You raised her.""
"That doesn't make what you did right.""
Then another voice entered the recording.
A woman.
Margaret.
"Please. Both of you. The agreement was supposed to protect the children.""
My father replied.
"Protect them? You took away their names, their families, and their right to know the truth.""
The recording ended.
I stared at the laptop.
My father had known.
He had known for years.
He'd raised me knowing that another woman had given birth to me.
He'd loved me anyway.
And he'd spent the rest of his life trying to correct what had happened.
I looked at Daniel.
He was crying silently.
"Your mother," I whispered.
He nodded.
"She never knew.""
I reached for his hand.
"I'm sorry.""
He squeezed my fingers.
For a moment, we were no longer attorney and client.
We were two people who had just discovered that their entire childhoods had been shaped by a lie.
Then Cole spoke.
"You should understand something. I wasn't acting alone.""
I turned toward him.
"Who else?""
He looked at Marcus.
"Your husband.""
Marcus jumped up.
"Don't you dare put this on me!""
Cole laughed.
"Really? You signed the original agreement.""
"I was twenty-two!""
"And you received money for it.""
Marcus turned pale.
The investigator placed another document on the table.
A bank transfer.
Dated twenty-nine years earlier.
The amount was $40,000.
The recipient was a company owned by Marcus's father.
I stared at Marcus.
"You were paid?""
He looked at me.
"It wasn't like that.""
"You were paid to help conceal my identity?""
"I didn't understand what was happening.""
"You were twenty-two, Marcus. You weren't five.""
He slammed his palm against the table.
"Your father knew! He agreed to raise you!""
"After you and Cole took away his right to know the truth!""
Marcus looked toward Daniel.
"Your mother was never going to get the baby. She was dead. Everyone had moved on.""
Daniel stood.
"Don't talk about my mother.""
Marcus sneered.
"She was dead before any of this mattered.""
Daniel moved forward.
One of the investigators stepped between them.
"That's enough.""
Marcus looked at me again.
"Evelyn, please. You need to understand why I did it.""
I shook my head.
"I don't want another explanation.""
"You were always going to inherit the company. I wanted to protect what we built.""
"You wanted to steal it.""
"I wanted security!""
"You wanted control.""
His face twisted.
"Your father treated me like an employee. I worked for years to prove myself. He never trusted me. He gave you everything, and you didn't even understand what you had.""
I stared at him.
"So you decided to take it?""
"I deserved more!""
There it was.
The truth.
Not love.
Not confusion.
Not an unfortunate affair.
Entitlement.
Marcus believed that because he had worked beside my father, he deserved the inheritance.
Because he had married me, he deserved control over my assets.
Because he had kept his secrets for years, he believed he deserved to keep them forever.
I slowly removed my wedding ring.
He watched me.
"What are you doing?""
I placed it on the table.
"Returning something that never belonged to me anymore.""
His face changed.
"Evelyn, don't.""
"I won't share you, Marcus. I won't share my company. And I won't spend another day defending myself against the consequences of your choices.""
I turned toward Daniel.
"What happens now?""
He answered calmly.
"The investigators will preserve the evidence. The board will vote on Marcus's removal. We will pursue the necessary legal action concerning the forged documents and unauthorized transactions.""
"And the hospital records?""
"We'll request a formal review.""
I looked at Daniel.
"And us?""
He looked down at his mother's photograph.
"First, I want to find out who she really was. I have spent my entire life believing I knew her story.""
I nodded.
"Then we'll find out together.""
By late afternoon, Marcus had been escorted from the building.
His access card was deactivated.
His company accounts were frozen pending investigation.
And the board unanimously voted to remove him from his executive position.
Vanessa remained behind after everyone else left.
She stood near the windows, watching the city below.
I approached her.
"Why did you help him for so long?""
She turned.
"Because I was afraid.""
"You could have told me.""
"I know.""
"You could have stopped the affair.""
She looked down.
"I know.""
I studied her face.
"Did you ever love him?""
She gave a bitter laugh.
"At first, I thought I did. Then I discovered what he was capable of.""
"That doesn't excuse what you did.""
"I know.""
She reached into her handbag and handed me an envelope.
"There's one more thing you should have.""
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph of Marcus standing beside a woman outside a private clinic.
The date was from eleven months earlier.
I looked closer.
The woman wasn't Vanessa.
She was much older.
She carried a small handbag and wore a hospital visitor badge.
I recognized her immediately.
Margaret Ellis.
On the back of the photograph was a handwritten message.
She knows where the original birth records are.
I looked at Vanessa.
"Where did you get this?""
"From Marcus's private safe.""
"Why was he keeping it?""
She hesitated.
"Because he was planning to meet Margaret again.""
"When?""
Vanessa glanced at her phone.
"Tomorrow morning.""
I stared at her.
"Where?""
She gave me the address.
It was a private medical clinic on the outskirts of the city.
I looked toward Daniel.
He was still in the boardroom, speaking with the investigators.
"Daniel," I called.
He turned.
I handed him the photograph.
He studied it carefully.
Then he looked at me.
"Margaret.""
"Yes.""
"She told us she had disappeared because she was afraid of Marcus.""
I nodded.
"Apparently, she has been meeting him.""
Daniel looked toward the investigators.
"We need to find her.""
One investigator checked the address.
Then his expression changed.
"That's not a clinic.""
"Then what is it?"" I asked.
He looked up.
"A private maternity facility. It closed its doors six years ago.""
Daniel stared at the photograph.
I felt a chill run down my spine.
"Why would Marcus be meeting Margaret at an abandoned maternity facility?""
Nobody answered.
Then Daniel's phone rang.
He listened.
His face drained of color.
"Where?""
A pause.
"Is she alive?""
Another pause.
Then he slowly lowered the phone.
I stepped toward him.
"What happened?""
He looked at me.
"Margaret Ellis has been found.""
"Where?""
"Inside the old maternity facility.""
I swallowed.
"Is she hurt?""
Daniel's voice dropped.
"She's dead.""
The investigator immediately called for additional officers.
I stood motionless.
Margaret was dead.
The woman who knew the truth about my birth.
The woman who had helped my father protect me.
The woman who had secretly accessed his medical records.
And now she couldn't answer any of our questions.
Daniel looked at the photograph again.
Then he noticed something I hadn't.
A small detail in the background.
A reflection in the clinic window.
Another person standing behind Margaret.
He enlarged the image.
My stomach dropped.
It wasn't Marcus.
It wasn't Dr. Cole.
It was someone I'd never expected to see.
*My mother.*
The woman I'd buried seventeen years earlier.
May you like
The woman everyone had told me was dead.
And beneath the photograph was a date from just three weeks ago.
