Chapter 3: My Father's Last Warning

For several seconds, nobody moved.
The candles continued burning.
The anniversary dinner grew cold.
And my father's sealed envelope sat in my hands like something alive.
"Explain yourself," I said to Vanessa.
She shook her head.
"I can't.""
Marcus stepped toward her.
"What do you mean, you can't?""
"Marcus, please.""
"You've been sleeping with me for eleven months. You can explain yourself now.""
Vanessa flinched.
Daniel calmly interrupted.
"Perhaps everyone should sit down.""
Marcus pointed at him.
"Don't tell me what to do.""
Daniel ignored him and pulled out a chair for me.
I sat.
My fingers traced the familiar handwriting on the envelope.
My father had been dead for two years.
He'd died suddenly after suffering a stroke while traveling for work. I'd never gotten to say goodbye properly. The last conversation we'd had was about a birthday dinner he'd promised to take me to.
I'd cried for months.
Marcus had held me through the funeral.
He'd told me my father would have wanted me to be happy.
Now I wondered how much of that had been another performance.
"Open it," Daniel said gently.
I broke the seal.
Inside was a handwritten letter and a small brass key attached to a numbered tag.
I unfolded the letter.
My darling Evelyn,
If Daniel is giving you this letter, something has happened that I hoped would never happen. I pray I am wrong, but I have spent too many years watching people mistake kindness for weakness.
You have always trusted too easily.
I used to worry that the world would punish you for it.
My vision blurred.
I continued.
*When you married Marcus, I wanted to believe he loved you as much as you loved him. But I noticed things. Questions about the company.
Questions about your inheritance. Questions about what would happen if you ever became unable to manage your affairs.*
I did not want to interfere with your marriage. You were happy, and I wanted you to have the life you chose.
But I made arrangements.
I stopped reading.
Marcus moved closer.
"Give me that.""
I pulled the letter against my chest.
"No.""
"Evelyn, don't be ridiculous.""
Daniel stood.
"Mr. Hart, I strongly advise you not to touch her.""
Marcus glared at him.
"Stay out of my marriage.""
Daniel's expression remained unchanged.
"Your marriage is not the issue anymore.""
I continued reading.
The key belongs to a private safe deposit box at First National Trust. Inside are the original trust documents, a copy of the shareholder agreement, and records I instructed my accountant to preserve.
There is also a letter explaining why I created the Evelyn Hart Protection Trust.
If Marcus has attempted to transfer your inheritance, you must understand one thing: he was never entitled to own it.
My hands went cold.
I looked up.
"Daniel, what is the Evelyn Hart Protection Trust?""
He leaned forward.
"Your father established it shortly before his death. It owns a controlling portion of Hartwell Holdings.""
"How much?""
"Seventy-two percent.""
Marcus let out a sharp laugh.
"That's impossible.""
Daniel turned toward him.
"Why?""
"Because I manage the company.""
"Managing a company does not make you its owner.""
Marcus's face flushed.
"Your client has been receiving dividends from a company I built.""
"Your client?"" I repeated.
Daniel looked at me.
"Yes. Mrs. Hart is the controlling beneficiary and the principal voting authority. You were never required to give your husband ownership.""
Marcus shook his head.
"She doesn't understand how this works. I built the business operations. I negotiated the contracts. I kept that company alive.""
I looked at him.
"My father built it.""
"And I expanded it!""
"Then why were you trying to transfer my shares?""
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Daniel placed a second folder on the table.
"Because he appears to have believed that you would never discover the arrangement.""
Marcus grabbed the folder.
Daniel let him take it.
Inside were copies of financial statements, board resolutions, and an application bearing Marcus's signature.
My husband's name appeared beneath a statement claiming that I had voluntarily agreed to relinquish my voting rights.
I stared at the signature.
It looked like mine.
But it wasn't.
I leaned closer.
"That's not my handwriting.""
Daniel nodded.
"We had the signature examined. It was copied from an older authorization.""
Marcus dropped the folder.
"This is a misunderstanding.""
Daniel's voice became colder.
"Forging a shareholder authorization is not a misunderstanding.""
Vanessa began crying harder.
I turned toward her.
"Why did you tell me not to open the letter?""
She wiped her face.
"Because your father knew about me.""
My heart stopped.
"What?""
She looked at Daniel.
He nodded once.
"Tell her," he said.
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
"Your father hired me.""
Marcus stared at her.
"What?""
"Before he died, I worked for an outside financial investigation firm. Your father asked me to review several transactions connected to Hartwell Holdings.""
I couldn't speak.
She continued.
"I found irregular payments. At first, I thought it was a bookkeeping issue. Then I found transfers to companies that had no employees, no real offices, and no business activity.""
"Bluecrest Consulting?"" I asked.
She nodded.
"That company was one of them.""
Marcus stepped forward.
"You're lying.""
Vanessa looked at him.
"You told me you were using the money to secure your position in the company. You said Evelyn had already agreed to everything.""
"I never said that.""
"You showed me documents!""
"Shut up.""
Daniel placed another paper on the table.
"Ms. Collins eventually contacted my office after discovering that several transactions were being disguised as consulting fees.""
I stared at Vanessa.
"Then why were you sleeping with my husband?""
She looked down.
For the first time, I saw something other than fear in her expression.
Shame.
"Because Marcus found out I was investigating him.""
The room became painfully quiet.
"He threatened to destroy my career," she continued.
"He said he had evidence that I had taken money. He told me he could make it look like I was responsible for the missing funds.""
Marcus laughed.
"That's a convenient story.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"I was scared.""
"So you decided to become his mistress?""
"I thought I could get close enough to him to find the records.""
I stared at her.
"Do you expect me to believe that?""
"No."" Her voice cracked.
"I expect you to hate me.""
I didn't know what to say.
The affair was real.
The kisses I'd witnessed were real.
The messages and hotel visits had happened.
Whatever her original intention had been, she'd still helped Marcus humiliate me.
But something about her story made the financial documents look different.
Daniel spoke again.
"Ms. Collins provided certain records to my office last month. Those records helped establish the connection between Mr. Hart and the unauthorized transfers.""
Marcus spun toward him.
"You have no right to use those!""
"Actually, I do.""
"She stole confidential information!""
"Then I suggest you discuss that with your legal counsel.""
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
"You told me you destroyed everything.""
She whispered, "I didn't.""
His face changed.
I had never seen him look frightened before.
Not when his business struggled.
Not when my father died.
Not even when I confronted him about the affair.
But now, standing in the middle of our dining room, he looked like a man watching a trap close around him.
I picked up the letter again.
There was one final paragraph.
There is one more thing you need to know, sweetheart.
If Marcus ever brings another woman into your home and tells you to accept what he has done, do not assume the woman is the only person he has betrayed.
I read the sentence twice.
Then I looked at Daniel.
"Why did my father write that?""
Daniel closed his briefcase.
"Because he suspected Marcus might eventually try to establish a second claim against the trust through a marriage-related financial arrangement.""
"What kind of arrangement?""
Daniel hesitated.
Then he reached into his folder and removed a document I hadn't seen before.
It was a marriage certificate.
Not mine.
Marcus's name appeared on it.
And beside his name was another woman's.
Vanessa Collins.
My stomach dropped.
I looked at the date.
It was dated seven months earlier.
"Marcus," I whispered.
"What is this?""
He lunged toward the document.
Daniel moved it out of reach.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Marcus stared at the certificate.
Then he turned toward me.
"Evelyn, I can explain.""
I looked from him to Vanessa.
"You're married to her?""
Marcus's silence was answer enough.
Vanessa began sobbing.
"It wasn't supposed to happen like this.""
I could barely breathe.
For eleven months, I had believed my husband was having an affair.
But the marriage certificate suggested something much worse.
He hadn't merely been keeping a mistress.
He had secretly married her while still married to me.
Daniel placed one final document beside the certificate.
And when I saw the signature at the bottom, I realized my husband hadn't just planned to replace me.
May you like
He had planned to use both of us.
*The signature belonged to my father.*
