Chapter 4: The Signature That Wasn't Mine

For several seconds, I couldn't hear the alarm anymore.

I could see the red lights flashing beside the pool house. I could see the water dripping from Ethan's arms onto the stone tiles. I could even see Brooke clutching her towel as if it were the only thing keeping her from falling apart.

But all I could hear was Daniel's voice.

“They found a signature authorizing the transaction. Yours, Lauren.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Daniel held my gaze.

“The document bears your name.””

“I never signed anything for your company.””

Ethan stepped forward immediately.

“Lauren, you need to calm down.””

I turned toward him.

“Don't tell me to calm down.””

“I'm trying to help you.””

“Then tell me why my signature is on a document for a company I've never worked for.””

He opened his mouth, but Daniel interrupted.

“Ethan, you have thirty seconds to explain why my company's acquisition documents contain Lauren's signature before I call the police.””

Ethan's face reddened.

“You're making accusations without knowing the facts.””

“Then give me the facts.””

“It's a complicated financial arrangement.””

Daniel glanced at his phone.

“Twenty-five seconds.””

“This isn't a courtroom!””

“No,” Daniel replied.

“In a courtroom, you'd have the right to remain silent.””

Ethan looked at me.

“Lauren, please. You know I would never do anything to hurt you.””

The words were so familiar that I almost laughed.

He had said the same thing when he forgot my birthday. When he spent our anniversary answering business calls. When I discovered that he had borrowed money from our joint account without telling me.

Every time, he had looked me in the eye and made his reassurance sound like a promise.

Now he was asking me to believe him while hundreds of thousands of dollars were missing from my account.

“Did you forge my signature?”” I asked.

“No.””

“Did you use my money to fund this transaction?””

“I invested it.””

“That's not what I asked.””

He looked toward the house.

I followed his gaze.

For the first time, I understood why he was so desperate to get inside. His office contained his computer, his financial records, and the locked cabinet he had once described as a place for confidential client documents.

I had never questioned him.

Now I wondered what else he had hidden behind that door.

Daniel's phone buzzed again.

He looked at the screen and answered.

“Tell me you have the original file.””

A man's voice came through the speaker, too faint for me to understand.

Daniel listened, his expression hardening.

“Don't send anything to Ethan. Preserve the access logs. I'll be there as soon as I can.””

He ended the call.

Then he looked at me.

“Lauren, the signature may be part of a much larger problem. My company was preparing to acquire a commercial property portfolio. Someone submitted altered financial projections to make the acquisition appear more profitable than it was.””

“Why would anyone do that?””

“To persuade our board to approve a transaction under false pretenses.””

“And my signature?””

“Your name appears on a personal guarantee connected to the funding arrangement.””

I felt my stomach turn.

A personal guarantee meant someone could potentially pursue my assets if the transaction collapsed.

“How much?”” I whispered.

Daniel hesitated.

“Approximately two million dollars.””

The pool deck seemed to tilt beneath my feet.

Two million dollars.

I looked at Ethan.

He didn't appear surprised.

That was the moment I stopped hoping there was an innocent explanation.

“You used my name to guarantee a two-million-dollar transaction?””

“Lauren, listen to me.””

“Did you?””

“I was protecting our future.””

I stared at him.

“You put our entire future at risk without telling me?””

“The deal was going to make us wealthy.””

“Us?””

“Yes, us!””

He gestured toward the mansion.

“This house. Our investments. Everything we've built.

You think it happens because money falls out of the sky? I've spent years taking risks so you could live like this.””

His voice echoed across the pool deck.

For an instant, I saw the man I had married beneath the anger. The charming man who had brought me coffee when I worked late. The man who had held my hand at my mother's funeral and promised I would never have to face anything alone.

I remembered believing him.

Then I remembered the bank balance.

“Taking risks with your own money is one thing,” I said.

“Stealing mine is another.””

“I didn't steal anything.””

“Then why did you hide the transfers?””

“Because you would have panicked before you understood the strategy.””

Daniel let out a humorless breath.

“You keep using the word strategy as though it changes what you did.””

Ethan turned on him.

“You have no idea what it takes to run a business.””

“I know what it takes to keep one honest.””

Brooke suddenly spoke.

“Ethan, you told me Lauren had already agreed.””

He whipped around.

“Shut up.””

She flinched.

“You said she signed the documents voluntarily.””

“I said shut up!””

Daniel moved between them.

“Don't speak to her that way.””

Ethan shoved a wet hand through his hair.

“This is absurd. Everyone is acting as though I'm some criminal because a deal got complicated.””

I reached into my purse and pulled out my own identification.

“Show me the original guarantee.””

He stared at me.

“What?””

“The document with my signature. Show me.””

“It's in my office.””

“Then we're going inside.””

He stepped in front of me.

“No.””

The refusal was immediate.

I stopped.

“Why not?””

“Because the documents are confidential.””

“My name is on them.””

“Lauren, you don't understand what you're doing.””

“Then help me understand.””

He looked at Daniel, then at Brooke, searching for someone willing to rescue him.

Neither moved.

Finally, he lowered his voice.

“If you walk into that office and start pulling things apart, you'll destroy everything.””

I studied his face.

“Everything you built, or everything you stole?””

His expression hardened.

“You're going to regret this.””

For the first time, his threat didn't frighten me.

It clarified things.

I took out my phone and called the security company.

When the operator answered, I requested that all access to the office be suspended and every available recording from the last thirty days be preserved.

Ethan stared at me in disbelief.

“You can't lock me out of my own office.””

“I just did.””

“You don't have the authority!””

“I own this property with you, and the security account is in my name.””

He reached for my phone.

Daniel caught his wrist.

“Don't.””

Ethan jerked free.

“Get your hands off me!””

Daniel stepped back.

“Gladly.””

I finished the call and slipped the phone into my pocket.

“Neither of us is touching those documents,” I said.

“An independent attorney can examine them.””

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“An attorney? You want to drag strangers into our marriage?””

“You dragged another woman into our marriage. You dragged my inheritance into a business scheme. And apparently, you dragged my name into a two-million-dollar guarantee.””

My voice shook, but I continued.

“You don't get to decide when this becomes private.””

Daniel's phone rang again.

He listened, asked a few questions, then looked directly at Ethan.

“The board meeting has been moved forward to tomorrow morning. The acquisition cannot proceed until the guarantee is verified.””

Ethan went pale.

Daniel continued.

“And our finance team has found something else.””

“What?”” I asked.

“The electronic signature was submitted using a digital certificate registered to Lauren's old laptop.””

I stared at him.

“My old laptop?””

Daniel nodded.

“Apparently, the signature was authenticated through a device associated with your personal account.””

I remembered the laptop immediately.

It had disappeared six months earlier.

Ethan had told me he had taken it to a recycling center after it stopped working.

I looked at him.

“You told me you disposed of that laptop.””

He said nothing.

“Ethan?””

His eyes shifted toward the house.

Daniel's voice became dangerously quiet.

“Where is it?””

Ethan swallowed.

“I don't know.””

But I could tell he did.

And as I watched his face, another memory surfaced.

Three weeks earlier, I had received an automated email notifying me that my old digital certificate had been accessed.

Ethan had told me it was a system error.

I had believed him.

Now I understood that the signature might not have been forged on paper at all.

Someone had used my identity to authorize a transaction worth millions.

And my husband had known exactly where the evidence was.

I turned toward the mansion.

“We're going to find that laptop.””

Ethan blocked the steps.

“You are not going anywhere near my office.””

I looked at him, then at Daniel.

“Call your attorney.””

Daniel nodded and stepped away to make the call.

I took another step toward the house.

Ethan's face twisted with panic.

“Lauren, if you open that cabinet, you'll find out why I had no choice.””

I stopped.

“What does that mean?””

He stared at me.

May you like

Then, in a voice so low that I almost missed it, he said the words that changed everything.

“Your mother wasn't supposed to leave you that money.””
